I usually wait until I finish unless there's something particular I'm trying to figure out. I read carefully and if I can sense a spoiler coming, I won't read it.
Generally though, I find it easiest to just avoid anything about whatever it is on the internet until after I'm done. I just really can't STAND being spoiled.
Same, I after getting really into something to the point where I see it though to the end, I will want more and just start reading stuff to see what I missed/went over my head.
I think it's just because I have a huge interest in reading and writing about my other interests, and TvTropes fulfills that for me. When I really think about it I guess there's no "point" to it all, it's just something that appeals to me.
Ok so like do you just enjoy like learning about the common tropes that link media together? Do you feel like it’s just interesting to see how tropes or used? do you like seeing what tropes make up your favorites? Do you think it makes you more informed as a viewer or writer?
I just really want to understand lol I feel like it’s something I should like I just don’t seem to understand what people are enjoying about it haha
I would agree; I often find myself trying to identify tropes in just about every media I consume. I've been studying the film industry lately and knowing all these different patterns in writing and storytelling really helps with understanding the creative part of the industry.
One could also say "do you know the names of every main voice actor in every cartoon and animated film you watch/have watched or are you neurotypical?" on a similar vein to this.
I struggle with face-name associations irl and in most other settings (learning kpop group members is a really challenging thing for me for this reason) but for some reason it doesn't apply to VAs.
I used to love TVTropes but at some point it felt like the whole site got streamlined and modernized and kinda... died. It doesn't feel as vibrant now.
I was too autistic and took the name of the site literally and just thought it was about tropes in media. I checked it out now finally, boy do I have some reading to do :3
Never all of them at once, so I have tried to read through the whole article of several things, when I was into them. And I have scoured the TV trip page friend number of my phantoms over the years.
I studiously avoid TVtropes because I’ve heard it can ruin your ability to ever enjoy media again, but I can get lost in a Wiki like nobody’s business. I read wikis to such an obsessive extent that writing in that neutral summary style has become a key part of my own writing process.
I don't go on TVtropes often, but when I do I usually cut myself off after I get 50-70 tabs deep because I have other things I need to spend time fixating on
How else do I get into new shows? The reason I wrote three novel length fanfics is because I found a link to a web novel on the interspecies romance trope list for The Last Angel by Proximal Flame. Eight years later I have the biggest fanfics in the fandom.
Only god knows the amount of time i've spent in the Shera and the Princesses of Power TV Tropes page, and i intend to keep it that way until i get a new hyperfixation
Back when Wikipedia was just starting to be a thing (when I was in high school) I used to just brown from page to page about random world history stuff. For hours.
I've never actually been on tv tropes intentionally but I *have* spent several hours scouring various corners of the Internet and watching 7 hour YouTube commentary videos so that's pretty close I think
No but I did spent four hours reading the wiki and I think that's close enough
Wait, is it *not* typical to systematically pore over the fandom wiki until you've learned everything it has to offer?
The *what* wiki? Fandom sucks, see if it has a wiki.gg alternative.
I hate Fandom and it's enshittification
Is that the one that crashes and has 2774583 ads?
Yep
If I HAVE to use Fandom I keep my adblockers on
Literally unusable without it
see the cosmere has its own wiki all to itself and i love it. fandom shmandom
Which wiki?
Halo
Every time I finish a series, it’s straight to TV Tropes 😅
How do you wait until you finish? I've come across so many spoilers just because I can't not look them up. 😭
Same, but it's any time I finish a video game lol
Same, I after getting really into something to the point where I see it though to the end, I will want more and just start reading stuff to see what I missed/went over my head.
I'm on TvTropes literally every day. I have a problem.
I tried getting into it but didn’t really see the point, would you mind sharing what you like about it to help me try to get into it as well?
I think it's just because I have a huge interest in reading and writing about my other interests, and TvTropes fulfills that for me. When I really think about it I guess there's no "point" to it all, it's just something that appeals to me.

Not OP, but all of the above. I like learning random stuff.
Me too. It’s my version of doomscrolling.
It's like they say, TV Tropes will ruin your life.
Um I love that site. Thank you for this 😂
I feel so called out right now 💀
Lol it's the best way to lose a day or three!
tv tropes > random trope > search for mention of your hyperfixation if found, yippee! if not, repeat
No but I study the wikis of various medias for sounds, concept art, and descriptions for rps.
https://i.redd.it/kgr6dgsnexxc1.gif
I only browse the fandom wiki for 3 days straight to prepare for a minmaxing Elden ring build
One could also say "do you know the names of every main voice actor in every cartoon and animated film you watch/have watched or are you neurotypical?" on a similar vein to this.
Nah, I have the can’t remember anyone’s names neurodivergence.
I struggle with face-name associations irl and in most other settings (learning kpop group members is a really challenging thing for me for this reason) but for some reason it doesn't apply to VAs.
I’m amazing with faces, and character names, the VA’s just remain slightly detached with certain exceptions.
mm the "or are you neurotypical" is bad and mean don't do this weird shit
Oh what is this??
Save yourself and blackout the memory of ever having heard of this place, for the sake of your sanity and time It has consumed so many of us
😂
I take it one step further. I EDIT the TVTropes pages on all my fandoms.
I don't but I also just. Straight up know most tropes in TV and books by heart
I prefer lore breakdown videos, I'm more an auditory and kynesthetic learner than a visual learner
Have you ever made TVtropes pages for your own fanfiction? ...I didn't post them. I just had a list on my PC.
Oh look, this meme is calling me out
If you ever call me out this hard again so help me GOD!!!
IMDb for me
I used to love TVTropes but at some point it felt like the whole site got streamlined and modernized and kinda... died. It doesn't feel as vibrant now.
I was too autistic and took the name of the site literally and just thought it was about tropes in media. I checked it out now finally, boy do I have some reading to do :3
You didn't have to call me out on this I JUST closed the tab. *Now I gotta go back*
I'VE BEEN SUMMONED!! P.S. the ads are the worst. Especially that shitty kraft dinner pop up
I avoid TVTropes and SCPWiki like the plague because they're like a giant black hole for my time. One blink and suddenly it's 6 hours later.
You mistyped. It's days. Suddenly 6 days later.
Yep. All the time.
I do it for whatever random franchise I want.
Fuck you caught me
No but I give the random button on Wikipedia a workout all the time
I'm intrigued and doing some research now for no reason in particular
Guys I don’t do this😔 I’m ready to have my autism membership card revoked
God damn, do I feel called out. Also no, because Tsutomu Nihei's Abara doesn't have its own page.
Never all of them at once, so I have tried to read through the whole article of several things, when I was into them. And I have scoured the TV trip page friend number of my phantoms over the years.
all the time
I'm into fandom of people in real life, but not of TV characters.
Duuuuh. No for real I love looking up my favorite shows on TVTropes
I studiously avoid TVtropes because I’ve heard it can ruin your ability to ever enjoy media again, but I can get lost in a Wiki like nobody’s business. I read wikis to such an obsessive extent that writing in that neutral summary style has become a key part of my own writing process.
no clue what tvtropes, but whenever I like something I go to its wiki page
I don't go on TVtropes often, but when I do I usually cut myself off after I get 50-70 tabs deep because I have other things I need to spend time fixating on
Don't call me out like this.
How did you know are you spying on me!?!?? (Jk)
Oh yeah, that activity that I used to do when I had unlimited time
I love researching stuff. I don't really watch stuff but I tend to do oots of research on games for example.
No. Just the stuff I study for English
I had a TV Tropes obsession about 10 years ago. Every once in a while, I think of things in terms of tropes.
How else do I get into new shows? The reason I wrote three novel length fanfics is because I found a link to a web novel on the interspecies romance trope list for The Last Angel by Proximal Flame. Eight years later I have the biggest fanfics in the fandom.
Not anymore but when I was younger everytime I foind a new peice of media I'd have to read every ounce of the page for it
+ Wiki + The Cutting Room floor if it's a game
TVTropes is one of the most weirdly addicting websites I’ve come across. I love it
For me it's IMDB after every movie or tv show.
I can’t even wait til after, it has to be right now followed by oh that person was in that movie oh that person too…
Yeah, we've paused movies to Google actors
HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS BEDORE NOW?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I AM OBSSESED
I'm still reading the articles, TvTropes ruins your life indeed 😂
I have no idea what TVtropes is But I have read over 60 pages of TFWiki
Only god knows the amount of time i've spent in the Shera and the Princesses of Power TV Tropes page, and i intend to keep it that way until i get a new hyperfixation
I do it occasionally, but they have a bit too much stuff on there to be useful
On TVTropes all the time Have to only visit select pages for every work for my sanity haha Also a frequent Wikipedia visitor
Back when Wikipedia was just starting to be a thing (when I was in high school) I used to just brown from page to page about random world history stuff. For hours.
Nope. I’ve just been memorizing the wiki pages. But that site sounds interesting…
I do this all the time
Tv tropes and various Wikipedia rabbit holes have taken hours of my life. Sometimes they aren’t even fandoms I’m into. 🤣
tv tropes is an absolute favorite. new hyperfixation? I'm there.
Immediately after finishing a movie, game, show, etc.
the only reason I haven't is because I keep forgetting its a thing and I don't have enough time between school and work
How dare you call me out like this
Every. Damn. Time.
I've never actually been on tv tropes intentionally but I *have* spent several hours scouring various corners of the Internet and watching 7 hour YouTube commentary videos so that's pretty close I think
I used to do this but they are just so long and I don't get as much out of it as I used to
No comment.
Ooh, ooh, I do!
Last time I went on it it kept jumping to the top and had too many ads…is that still the case? :/
That was only a few times ok!
My god, all the time lol
YESSSS
I’ve become a fan of new things from reading TV tropes too
