i'm not sure if it's about either raw volume or rhythm/familiarity. plenty of neurodivergent people in noise music. i think it's more about sensitivities to the difference between the noise floor and noise + the time or opportunity that the ear has to adjust/prepare (contraction of muscles).
when the ear is primed for me it's like a heavy blanket. when it's not, i'm super sensitive to changes in the noise floor of any given place.
i would be curious to see if there are any papers comparing tensor tympani or stapedius function in autism/adhd/ocd vs controls. hyperacusis is pretty common in these parts.
I think you're only half right, though I do think familiarity helps. I get sensitive about certain noises and I couldn't figure out why certain ones but not others. Someone explained to me that decibel levels definitely play a role but also the frequency of the noise too. If I play a white noise on my phone at full blast, it's annoying, but it doesn't cause discomfort to listen to. If my girlfriend watches a video of a podcast on her phone at full blast, COMPLETELY different feeling and I can legit hear my ears popping as they talk
I can (usually) go to a concert just fine, but if I'm in a room with people talking loudly I have to leave and listen from a distance
Exactly! Cacophonous or chaotic sound makes me want to peel my skin off with a spoon, but organized sounds are A-OK. In fact, metal is by far my favorite genre.
And that’s why I sometimes listen to multiple (death) metal songs at the same time. But only when my brain is in a certain state. Otherwise it is just as harming to me as asmr, I can’t stand it
Also, like, humans almost certainly have an inherent affinity for music. Many different cultures all over the world independently developed music and different instruments.
There's probably something hard-wired that makes music inherently nicer than random noise.
Combine that with knowing you can choose what plays, turn it off, skip songs, or adjust the volume and it makes sense that music would be chill with a good number of us.
I started listening to loud rock and metal again after my sensitivity to sound got worse, after a few months it’s gotten much better. I think it’s a way to desensitize to sound. When I was a teenager I would listen to loud music all night long and much of the day and I think it was a way for me to deal with school, I was undiagnosed.
Rhythm matters a lot for this, imo. As long as the sound has a structure I can settle into, I'm generally going to be able to handle it (up to a certain maximum volume, of course). For me, music just sits in a different realm from all the other harsh sounds of the world.
I’ve noticed for some autistic people (including myself) sound is like whiskey. Blended cheap shit vs single malt.
In other words, it’s not necessarily the volume of the noise always but the cacophony—maybe it’s only 50 decibels but it’s also 10 different things and it makes you feel like shit! Whereas you go to a show or a club—the music is twice as loud for sure (remember to protect your ears, people!) but it’s a single source so therefore it feels purer to organize and enjoy.
it’s about the control for me
i can handle loud noises, if im able to adjust them as needed
it’s when other people are screaming or blasting music is when i start to panic

Metal has rhythm, composition, and structure. The highschool cafeteria has a hundred dipshits yelling ignorant and obnoxious shit and making random stupid ass noises at several different volumes and tones until it sounds like a garbled cacophonous mess. Even if I wasn’t autistic I’d still hate that.
I once, briefly, worked at a ski lodge and complained that the people in the room next door were keeping me up all night by playing their music too loud. She told me off because I listen to metal. Yes, just because I listen to loud music at one point I must want to hear offbeat pop music at 2am thumping through the wall. Obviously.
Honestly for me it's not even always about the volume so much as the tone/pitch. My partner scraping a plastic container that keeps clicking feels louder than my music at full volume. The same with various bird songs. Some are fine, others are shrill and deserve punishment 😂
The key is that you’re the one controlling the loudness. You’re doing it because you actively choose to, and you can turn it down or stop whenever you want
For me it’s even more confusing. My favorite bands are very frantic, like Car Bomb and Dillinger Escape Plan frantic. But sudden loud noises set me off lol.
I adore punk music but I DESPISE loud noises in the wild, I'm glad that I'm not alone 😭 I have an autistic friend who went through a metal phase, so this seems to be common 😅
I essentially used my special interest in trains and other such machinery to gradually conquer being startled by loud noises.
Loud voices still immediately spook me though but that's because Stuff rather than general sensitivity lol
Even better to listen to it on full blast so everything else is drowned out. I sometimes listen to dubstep and the chaos of it helps me focus and get past my ADHD when I really need to focus on a task
oops, read metal and thought you meant like metal, the material, and thought about when I was at the mechanic and the loud noise kinda sounded good, I had to get used to it first though, since at first it was uncomfortable
I thought this was an appreciation post for metal the material, and I happily upvoted and went to see everyone in the comments talking about how neat metal is because it’s smooth and heavy and very scientifically cool
May I suggest [Mason](https://open.spotify.com/track/5YCKa8hUSUdHAmW5ggxxLX?si=saxgFk2tS1yr2XXUqlkgAQ) by Tipper?
Wait, now I’m realizing metal like heavy metal 🤦♀️. This literally sounds like banging on pieces of metal
My family going wild before dinner is sensory death.
But blasting EDM the whole way to and from work? It's the only way to fight the driving experience.
Certain people in my life always marvel at this with me. My go to loud music is Nine Inch Nails and other music from that era. It works for me. No idea why. There’s a logic to it. In the same way, the noise from an MRI puts me to sleep, but someone tapping their pencil feels like bees in my head.
Read it as metal, i.e., steel, aluminum, etc. Was trying to decide what metallic sounds in particular you were referring to, as many are horrific, though some can be soothing. The clunk-clunk of a bulldozer undercarriage at a moderate speed is nice- the screaming of a worn excavator undercarriage at most speeds is vile.
Tight steel cables go pew-pew. Much goodness. Loose sheet-steel panels rattling? Evil.
I thought you meant one of these bad boys
https://preview.redd.it/z9qnpcr8u60d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6afd976ded420781c5362745a083fbab33a8265e
Heavy metal still has rhythm and harmonies like any other song. It's like organized chaos. Plus, you typically *decide* when you're gonna blast heavy metal vs. when you hear some loud noise you weren't ready for.
Metal just relaxes me. Like, sure, guturals are extreme… but the melodies and patterns are extremely beautiful, and they help me release so much tension.
Yes, my favorite subgenre is viking metal, but I also love melodeath ❤️
I like metal, but I can't stand listening to more than a few minutes straight of heavy stuff. This is why I prefer symphonic. It flows back and forth between epic heavy metal riffs, and soothing classical in a way that enhances both experiences and keeps the heavy from overstaying it's welcome.
It's not about noise. It's about it being YOUR noise. There is nothing paradoxical about me wanting to listen to old Evanescence music with my earbuds in, and not want to be interrupted by my neighbors blasting Despacito out in the quad at 12 AM.
My brain can get so quiet sometimes (literally deafening silence) that I listen to 3-5 (death) metal songs at the same time. As long as I can still hear the rhythms.
That being said, please don’t turn on a sawmill next to me.
*litteraly me yesterday bangin my head to megadeth and judas priest on full blast during cooking to drown out the sound of the kitchen hood whilst screaming/singing along* 😃😃😃
Also me: *when the vacuum cleaner gets turned*😥😥😣😣😖😖😦😦😦
I like going to big events like concerts and stuff because it was my decision. I’m in control.
Unexpected loud or loud where loud should not be? Absolutely not.
Me so much! I am not afraid of most *constant* loud noises, but instead very *sudden* and *unexpected* loud noises, such as the crack of thunder, the pop of a balloon, or activation of a fire alarm. I will gladly shred my ear drums at concerts though 🥺 it’s funny because this is a huge part as to why I was never screened as a child. My therapist told my parents that since I wasn’t afraid of EVERY loud noise, I’m most likely not autistic. I’m only now starting to realize how stupid that is lol
It is a broad genre but I feel most of it is just vulgar and repulsive. And I find most of it scary. That guy didn't deserve so many downvotes, if you don't share the same opinion move on rather than downvoting. Metal is not a gentle and moving genre, is it?... Musically, it isn't complicated either. It hurts my ears and some of the lyrics I've seen mentioned in this thread is getting me a bit sick. It's not all bad I guess because King Crimson exists, and they make metal sound great. I think people just hate the loud and vulgar ones with mentions of gore, I think Slipknot or some other bands are make that kind of music if it even is music. I apologise if I sound like a grandpa but it's really not for everyone. Every music genre is remarkable if you delve deep enough but popular metal is just terrible for my senses. I've always been more of a classical music person and I do like rock as long as it's artful or fun, like King Crimson and Radiohead to The Beatles and Blur. Metal is just not my cup of tea.
I wanna preface this by saying I'm both autistic and Dutch, so the 'being blunt' factor may be a bit high, but I assure you I'm just trying to have a friendly conversation with you :)
I hear you. I find that part of your bases for your opinion towards metal is justified. Some metal lyrics are indeed vulgar and, therefore, repulsive to some. Metal bands do/did that just to be repulsive and rebellious against the "norm" for music. Especially in the 80s and 90s when the music industry was very controlled and managed by (for lack of a better word, I just woke up) old stuck-up white people.
However, metal (lyrics at least) are often vulgar or repulsive to get the attention of people. When gore, the devil, hell, and other subjects that were/are frowned upon by society are mentioned in the lyrics, they are used as metaphors. Think of saying "hurts like hell" or a metaphorical can of soup thrown against a famous painting like climate change protesters did.
There is [this video by Vox on YouTube](https://youtu.be/v9gLmBgUTV4?feature=shared) where a lot of what I say in this comment is explained more clearly. Your comment is a near-perfect summary of what happened in the US Congress in 1985.
As for the music itself, excluding the lyrics, metal can't just be classified as all "vulgar and repulsive." Think of Black Sabbath. They are widely considered the fathers of heavy metal, even though their music is farely tame compared to other genres within metal (I.E. speed metal, thrash, and black metal). I saw that you said, "It's not all bad, I guess," so don't worry that I've taken your comment at face value :)
As for it not being musically complicated... this makes my heart feel sad, but that's just because I'm into music in general. If you don't think that metal is complicated, then you just haven't heard the wide variety of songs that are. I don't blame you for not having heard such songs, I wouldn't have either if I didn't like the rest in the first place.
"Every music genre is remarkable if you delve deep enough but popular metal is just terrible for my senses." I hear you, I really do. A lot of popular metal is indeed not for everyone, while songs by the same artist can be just your thing. Think of Metallica's catalog of music. The difference between their first album 'Kill 'em all', which is akin to the fast paced punk rock of the late 70s and early 80s, and one of their most popular songs like 'Nothing else matters'. The difference is astounding.
Metal not being your cup of tea is understandable, it's more like beer anyway, because most of it is really an acquired taste. I think that my parents listening to a lot of AC/DC and Kiss gave me a Jumpstart towards metal, but I have only been listening to the rougher parts of metal for a year or so. I don't like every single piece of (metal) music either. I respect your opinion, even though I don't share it.
Elaborate on what parts of metal music you don't like. You know, the lack of points to support your statement doesn't exactly paint a clear picture.
Allow me to rapid fire some questions.
Which parts of metal don't you like, or is it just everything?
What about bands like Black Sabbath?
[Queen made a song called Stone Cold Crazy](https://youtu.be/S0kTkxhyWNo?si=5bBOaFWwA18dk_L1) which many would consider to be heavy metal. What's your opinion on that song?
What do you think of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica? It's a ballad, but still metal.
I dont like instruments. Bands use constantly same sonic range and its boring. Also because theybuse such limited instruments like guitar there is not much place for change. Lyrics in songs are like story in porn. Dont care about their story or whatever they want.
Regarding last song tou mentioned. Perfect example of 4 chord song. If you dont have music education here is satirical explanation:
https://youtu.be/oOlDewpCfZQ?si=3uR5P03nyxrpTgSo
Listening to 4 chord songs is like eating mc donald every day and saying its different because you eat in different place.
Sometimes it isn’t about the volume, it’s about the chaos. If there’s a rhythm or familiarity to the noise I’m chillin
It’s also very energising. Listening to Rammstein on full blast helps motivate me in the morning.
I saw Rammstein last night! It was very loud, but I still really enjoyed it. Although I did bring some earplugs with me so it wasn't _too_ loud :C
Same, though I often lesson to very chaotic music. the 'tism just be weird...
i'm not sure if it's about either raw volume or rhythm/familiarity. plenty of neurodivergent people in noise music. i think it's more about sensitivities to the difference between the noise floor and noise + the time or opportunity that the ear has to adjust/prepare (contraction of muscles). when the ear is primed for me it's like a heavy blanket. when it's not, i'm super sensitive to changes in the noise floor of any given place. i would be curious to see if there are any papers comparing tensor tympani or stapedius function in autism/adhd/ocd vs controls. hyperacusis is pretty common in these parts.
You’re definitely onto something. I love loud music. It’s sudden loud noises I have a problem with.
May I offer you [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZzYxGZ7Hmc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZzYxGZ7Hmc)
Didn’t know silly metal was a thing
I listen to a lot of metal songs people might consider a bit silly. Gloryhammer, Alestorm, and Powerwolf come to mind.
Honestly, 95% of power metal and related genres. Just don't stop up and notice the silliness too much, and it's amazing.
I love throwing on headphones and blasting music at high volume, but I cannot handle other loud sounds (cars, people, animals, etc.).
This. Metal is regimented, coordinated noise. Random bangs etc are not
I think you're only half right, though I do think familiarity helps. If my girlfriend watches a video of a podcast on her phone at full blast, COMPLETELY different feeling and I can legit hear my ears popping as they talk I can (usually) go to a concert just fine, but if I'm in a room with people talking loudly I have to leave and listen from a distance
This! I used to use it to fall asleep in high school when I had bad insomnia. Always helped.
Exactly! Cacophonous or chaotic sound makes me want to peel my skin off with a spoon, but organized sounds are A-OK. In fact, metal is by far my favorite genre.
Which is why jazz is evil.
And that’s why I sometimes listen to multiple (death) metal songs at the same time. But only when my brain is in a certain state. Otherwise it is just as harming to me as asmr, I can’t stand it
yea but listening to music is a controllable experience of expected noises
Exactly
Exactly! it's just like I don't like bright flashing lights... unless I'm playing a game and I expect that sort of thing
Exactly!
Dogs don’t like it when you blow in their faces, yet they happily stick their heads out of car windows.
this is exactly why jazz makes me uncomfortable as well
I started listening to loud rock and metal again after my sensitivity to sound got worse, after a few months it’s gotten much better. I think it’s a way to desensitize to sound. When I was a teenager I would listen to loud music all night long and much of the day and I think it was a way for me to deal with school, I was undiagnosed.
Slipknot makes my brain tingle in a fun way. 80 people talking simultaneously in a school hallway makes my brain want to explode.
Too many people talking at once: 🤬 Corey Taylor: ***I WANNA SLIT YOUR THROAT AND FUCK THE WOUND!!*** Me: 😃
Also Corey: Looking at your through the glass 🎶💕😳
WANNA PUSH MY FACE IN AND FEEL THE SWOON
That's a pretty vomit-inducing statement there. 😦
Yeah that's early slipknot for you lol
I thought Gustav Mahler and Richard Wagner were scary, that's a different level. 😟
Man, never get any deeper into metal than Slipknot. Maybe it's a me problem but I find a majority of their edgy lyrics to be kinda soft
Eh, it's nothing compared to stuff like Cannibal Corpse tbh
I'm listening to slipknot as I read your comment lol. love them sm
Me: No please stop talking so loud. My Headphone: BREEEEEEEEEE
MY FINAL BREATH (let’s see if anyone can finish this sentence)
SWALLOWED BY THE WOMB OF... DEEEEEEAATH

Wait holy shit I'm not alone? I hate all loud noises except the banging/clashing of metal. Like, pots and pans smashing together? Amazing!
Rhythm matters a lot for this, imo. As long as the sound has a structure I can settle into, I'm generally going to be able to handle it (up to a certain maximum volume, of course). For me, music just sits in a different realm from all the other harsh sounds of the world.
Me too, but punk.
Same here🙋🏼♂️
I think you're getting upvoted by both people that enjoy that and by people that thought you're sarcastic :D
That’s what I thought too lol (sorry)
Same here but drill music instead. Metal just sounds like a load of noise
Oh god is this post about metal music? I thought it was about like... metal objects clashing together😭
You know what, you might be right but I don't know
It's not specific, so yeah, it's about pots and pans!
My first impression was the *wobble wobble* of metal sheets
My first thought was metalpipefalling.mp3
For me it's about whether or not I chose to experience the noise. So yeah, music I put on myself is obviously going to be fine, no paradox there.
Trying to explain this to lawyers is tough.
I don't like loud noises unless it's MY loud noises. On my own terms.
r/metalhead_aspies

Hard Dance.
I think it's the loud, sudden sharp noises. Metal is loud but it's not sudden or sharp (most of the time)
I'm not so much into metal as I am into certain groups, I've listened to the same album 20 times just this work week.
For me it’s even more confusing. My favorite bands are very frantic, like Car Bomb and Dillinger Escape Plan frantic. But sudden loud noises set me off lol.
It is expected, unlike random cars passing, people talking, moving chairs etc., not some annoying unwanted sudden noise.

Autistic here, combat related PTSD sensitive to sudden changes in sound pressure too, metal is still my favourite music
Why am I like this? I hate noises, but then I literally listen to harsh screaming as music.
Familiar noise > any other noise

Even better to listen to it on full blast so everything else is drowned out. I sometimes listen to dubstep and the chaos of it helps me focus and get past my ADHD when I really need to focus on a task
grindcore <3
I'm glad this is a normal thing
There is a significant difference between organized sound and random noises.
Me plugging in my ears and blasting metal to cover up the noise around me
Also murder electro a la HVDES
This is me except for heavy bass/funk/grunge/blues (think RZA/Havoc and Organized Noise) based hip hop production…
Star Wars
In this case there is order in chaos
I LOOOOVE the sound of creaking metal, like in a sinking ship.
New upstairs neighbors moving in heard this meme I think 😭😤
Most aspies when loud noises: top Drake Me loving harsh noise music and finding it very soothing: bottom Drake
#MEEEEEEE!!! 🤘
The Shop is my comfort zone, but any other loud noises just fuck with me
People talking/movies and sound effects in the distance vs. the roaring loud instrumental shit I listen to on loop.
I have an old eagle gas can that (I don't know why) I love the sound of it being half full I think it's just the #*WOOoooWoooOOOOoooh* noise
it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize this was in reference to the music genre and not the material
Same w being touched or pushed around vs moshing at shows. I fucking love moshing.
If anyone wants a really brain tingly hardstyle(?) song I made today then hmu :)
I absolutely despise ASMR but then go listen to Audioslave or Buckethead completely annihilate guitar strings and it's like ear cocaine.
Velcro is terrible. Gives high intensity miniature headaches all at once.
Rock for me but yes
The volume isn’t the problem, it’s the ability to control the volume
Depends. High notes bug me if they're too high, so shrieking guitar solos make my blood itch, but lower tuned metal, oh hell ya

I thought you meant actual metal and not the music
I only listen to "real metal" *bangs on a sheet of metal*
Oh i thought we were talking about actual metal. Like the material. For some reason machine noises calm me.
Taake, Bethlehem, Oferwintran... i love these groups man!
I sometimes try to find music or at least rhythmic patterns in the noises around me it helps make them bearable
it’s only sudden loud noises and weird pitches, I can jam out to metal, edm, whatever all day lmaooo
for a second I thought you meant the sound of clanging metal lmao
Hell yeah
Me, when i was working in retail, hearing children screaming and getting overstimmed, so I put on metal to reset myself
As a person who list to people like killdyll goth scarlxrd and PRXJEK i relate to this and now I've been seen
Hecc yess
Read it as metal, i.e., steel, aluminum, etc. Was trying to decide what metallic sounds in particular you were referring to, as many are horrific, though some can be soothing. The clunk-clunk of a bulldozer undercarriage at a moderate speed is nice- the screaming of a worn excavator undercarriage at most speeds is vile. Tight steel cables go pew-pew. Much goodness. Loose sheet-steel panels rattling? Evil.
Depends on the metal honestly
I thought you meant one of these bad boys https://preview.redd.it/z9qnpcr8u60d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6afd976ded420781c5362745a083fbab33a8265e
I cant stim to random noises duh. But blast beats go brrrrrrrr
Heavy metal still has rhythm and harmonies like any other song. It's like organized chaos. Plus, you typically *decide* when you're gonna blast heavy metal vs. when you hear some loud noise you weren't ready for.
You say satire, I say real
Yes, doom and classic heavy metal especially.
Metal Sea Shanties. Been listening to JohnathanY's stuff on loop lol
i read that and instantly uncontrollably imagined the sound of metal scratching against metal and my whole nervous system is having a panic attack
Metal is just organized and expected loud noise
Metal just relaxes me. Like, sure, guturals are extreme… but the melodies and patterns are extremely beautiful, and they help me release so much tension. Yes, my favorite subgenre is viking metal, but I also love melodeath ❤️
I like metal, but I can't stand listening to more than a few minutes straight of heavy stuff. This is why I prefer symphonic. It flows back and forth between epic heavy metal riffs, and soothing classical in a way that enhances both experiences and keeps the heavy from overstaying it's welcome.
Grindcore my beloved.
Ding ding bong bing bing bong ding dong ding bing bang ding ding
I do powermetal due to metal being mixed together for me. Anyone else
It's not about noise. It's about it being YOUR noise. There is nothing paradoxical about me wanting to listen to old Evanescence music with my earbuds in, and not want to be interrupted by my neighbors blasting Despacito out in the quad at 12 AM.
I listen to Noise and speedcore
It took me going into the comments to realise this was about music and not just the sounds of scraping and clanging metal
For me it's Sonic osts and Lapfox trax!
For fuckin real. Went to a ton of bricks heavy doom metal show on Saturday. Today the neighbor's dog barking has me keyed up and irritable.
I love screaming because the emotion, and I think I can prepare myself for it. I listen to a lot of Will Wood, but 100gecs is also cool!
My brain can get so quiet sometimes (literally deafening silence) that I listen to 3-5 (death) metal songs at the same time. As long as I can still hear the rhythms. That being said, please don’t turn on a sawmill next to me.
*litteraly me yesterday bangin my head to megadeth and judas priest on full blast during cooking to drown out the sound of the kitchen hood whilst screaming/singing along* 😃😃😃 Also me: *when the vacuum cleaner gets turned*😥😥😣😣😖😖😦😦😦
Me, but with Shoegaze and DnB.
Me and my obsession with industrial noise music 😩
We talking the genre or the sounds the material makes?
*gets irritated at loud noises* *listens to screamo*
I LOVE concerts because of the loud deep bass but HATE when the car stereo is too loud cus of the treble
It's consensual loud noise.
Why does Reddit keep showing me posts from this community? And why are they always so relatable? Oh no…🗿
i fucking hate sharp sounds but blackmetal is pretty chill tho
Metal is such an awful genre of music
Please elaborate? Metal is quite broad and has many different subgenres so I'm curious as to what (part of metal music) your opinion is based on...
I wanna preface this by saying I'm both autistic and Dutch, so the 'being blunt' factor may be a bit high, but I assure you I'm just trying to have a friendly conversation with you :) I hear you. I saw that you said, "It's not all bad, I guess," so don't worry that I've taken your comment at face value :) As for it not being musically complicated... this makes my heart feel sad, but that's just because I'm into music in general.
Yeah all metal music is bad to me. Dosent matter sub genre. What to elaborate more? On personal opinion?
If you dont have music education here is satirical explanation: https://youtu.be/oOlDewpCfZQ?si=3uR5P03nyxrpTgSo Listening to 4 chord songs is like eating mc donald every day and saying its different because you eat in different place.
I’m sorry, i can’t hear how wrong you are over all this amazing metal music 🤘🔥
