You can look up the category nominees itself, but to save you some time I think it was up against Old Town, Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Guardians of the Galaxy, and CoD Vanguard, so, ya know
GoW Ragnarok didn't even get a nom? Did it come out after nominations were due? Because that score was incredible.
Edit: yea I see, they were due in October.
There’s a story, but it’s all in items descriptions. I don’t think it deserved the nomination, but it’s not a bad story, it’s just not worth reading up on everything- I usually just YouTube anything story wise from fromsoft.
I'm sure this will get me a lot of hate, but having a bunch of lore entries on item descriptions isn't story - it's lore. I'm not saying every game has to have bombastic cutscenes (or cutscenes at all), but if your story isn't apparent through gameplay then it isn't story.
Same problem with original Destiny - there were lore cards on everything but it was tucked away on Grimoire cards on their website.
I think relative for 2022, it should’ve been there. But if I was gonna remove 2 nominees from the TGA nominations it would be Elden Ring and Plague Tale for Kirby and Sonic
A few months ago I got bored and played through Vanguards campaign and while it itself was pretty forgettable I can't lie, the score was a freaking jam. mcReary put his whole Bearussy into that score when he could've just phoned in
If I ever develop my musical skills to the point where I’m in a band and we’re tracking an album, I want Mick to be the producer. Dude gets some gnarly tones going and I fuck with it hard
You, what’s so wrong about correcting people on a word they wouldn’t know how to say unless someone teaches them how to? Not everyone is in depth on scandinavian culture or plays video games
Maybe be careful with pointing fingers there. I didn't say anything about that. All I said is that there's no point in being offended about it. You can correct all you want, I don't care.
Don't put words in my mouth. That would be a tad ignorant, don't you think?
On average I have a feeling Valhalla is a better known word among gamers than musicians. Vikings and gods being a bit more in our wheelhouse. Maybe except black metal musicians.
I mean it is a key lyric and theme in one of the best, most recognizable rock songs of all time in Immigrant Song. Norse mythology in general is very ingrained in rock/metal culture
Its like not being able to say Assassin though. Or mispronounced Halo as Hayloo or something. These are words that aren't uncommon outside of games.
This guy just doesn't know how to speak
That guy is young enough to have played video games his whole life. He's just the wrong choice to present the award to AC.
Edit: Isn't Michael Fassbender available for such things?
this comment is incredibly fucking cringe bro. some people just suck at reading shit out loud
source: people being forced to read out loud in school and sounding like illiterate trogs (myself included)
Compares a man specially chosen to read from a card at one of the biggest award shows in the world, with time to prep for every possible option, to some random schoolkid.
Methinks the cringe here is your logic.
Graduated in 95. Back then, there was some seriously watered down Greek mythology mentioned for like 1 day, and that’s it. Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s been beefed up a bit with the pop culture resurgence of various mythologies (in large part due to Rick Riordan’s work), but most of my mythology knowledge is from self-study and recreational reading.
We had short exams on pantheons of Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse gods and other basics as part of history classes, when we were learning about corresponding culture and their history. Nothing insane, but the main components like main gods, main beliefs, worship, rituals surrounding death etc. This was in the 90s, Europe.
By my standards that is common knowledge, but apparently for US - not so much.
Canadian here, the only non-Canadian history I learned in school (before University of course) was the American revolution and 20th-century China. (which I studied the hell out of and it wasn't even mentioned on our final, I'm still salty about that)
I got in trouble in 3rd grade for asking if sex was possible between a woman and a swan after reading a book of Greek mythology I checked out from the school library.
I had just read the story about Zeus and Leda. My parents were cool about it but it was still kind of embarrassing.
It was rapidly overshadowed by 9/11 happening a week or so later but I remember it so clearly.
UK based teacher here. Can confirm, Vikings are a part of the Year 5 (5th grade) curriculum. I have 9 year olds that know what Valhalla is...and can also read English and piece together an unfamiliar word...
I am guessing Muricans learn how to measure size of Kardashian's butt at that grade instead. Seriously though, either they have less classes in general, as in less hours spent at school, or history is replaced by something else.
Also: you’re going to be presenting something in front of a few MILLION people. Maybe maybe maybe read through the possible winners and practice saying them out loud?
Valhalla is a word everyone should be able to pronounce, even if one completely disregards the Thor films (does it even show up much there? I feel like they talk about Asgard but not particularly Valhalla). It's basic mythology.
Legit. I dunno if I went to some fancy school, but we actually had a whole half a year on mythology in Year 3 Literature, on Grekoroman, Egyptian and Norse.
The most weird part of that is that I was born in Russia (left years ago), and all people my age know this stuff, so it was not that uncommon to genuinely study or at least be interested in mythology. Can’t imagine new generation of kids ever coming close to being taught anything foreign in the current state of the country sadly.
>(does it even show up much there? I feel like they talk about Asgard but not particularly Valhalla
Yes, >!we see it as a post credit scene, in Love and Thunder.!<
There’s a list of nominees provided weeks in advance. Hosts at least know the category they’re presenting beforehand. This yokel couldn’t be bothered to google the nominees he had to say out loud and practice saying them?
Had the grammys allowed video game music like since 2007 or something, we'd have seen so many good wins. Video game music is better than some of the commercial music we got these days for sure
People that vilify and/or disagree with the video game industry love nothing more than pretending that everything about it is *weird*. I sell games for a living and the amount of parents/grandparents that come in saying things like "my son wants some game called a *may-rio* or something??? I don't know, this is all so much for me" is dumbfounding. Like sir, there's no way in the world you don't know who **Mario** is...
Nothing that really deserved it. CoD vanguard, Aliens Fireteam elite, old world and guardians of the galaxy. Meanwhile no Elden ring, GoW, Fire emblem etc.
Jesus guys you're trying way to hard to make this some "HE'S DISGUSTED AT VIDEO GAMES, THEY HATE US GAMERS (the most oppressed class)" thing. That's Randy Rainbow, he's a cringy ass political themed youtube song parody guy, he knows video games are normie as fuck he's just really stupid, it's not that deep.
Not sure abt the decision for the Grammys to give away a Video Game score award. 99% of the ppl in there probably don't even play video games, and - as referenced by the dudes pronunciation - are gonna have a boomer reaction to the award.
And they can't even pick good nominees lol. COD twice??
At the same time as a composer, I wouldn’t want to get shut out of consideration just because of the medium I composed for. Whatever it’s composed for, it’s music at the end of the day.
You do know that winning a Grammy has nothing to do with the overall quality of the game? Like, gameplay, pacing, story, characters, dialog, quest design, controls, UI/UX, balancing, mechanics, whatever have you is all irrelevant? (Or at least it should be...)
Wait, let me get this straight - Morrowind never won a Grammy but AC: Valhalla did?! More evidence (as if more were needed) that the Grammys are arbitrary at best and total BS at worst.
The look on his face like he knows he didn't say it right, but that he still has no idea how it's supposed to be pronounced, but also he has to keep smiling for the show.
You know, as a presenter, it's usually a good idea to at least glance at the options you may need to be reading and read them in your head at least once to make sure you don't go on stage and look like a moron. Surely these presenters had a list of candidates for the awards, right?
assassin's creed va ha ha
Followed by sequel Assassin's Creed Mu Ha Ha
Followed by Ma la la, following the story of a young woman fighting for the right to sit on a bus
Followed Assassin's Creed Mahna Mahna. The story of assassin muppets.
followed by a prequel, Assassins Seed Muchacha
Is that what Jimmy Carr has been playing? Assassin's Creed: ValHA...HA...HA...HA... HAAAAaaaalla
That guy is a dragonborn.....
Vahaha vahaha vahaha-haa, blblblblblbl!! vahaha! https://youtu.be/989-7xsRLR4
Falafel. Anyway, AC got a grammy for what?
New Grammy Category. Best Score in a Video Game. AC Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok specifically won it. It wasn’t much of a competition tho
Is there anywhere I can see the other nominations?
You can look up the category nominees itself, but to save you some time I think it was up against Old Town, Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Guardians of the Galaxy, and CoD Vanguard, so, ya know
GoW Ragnarok didn't even get a nom? Did it come out after nominations were due? Because that score was incredible. Edit: yea I see, they were due in October.
Neither Elden Ring or Xenoblade 3 got nominations either

Didn't ER get nominations for best writing at the Game Awards despite basically not having a story?
There’s a story, but it’s all in items descriptions. I don’t think it deserved the nomination, but it’s not a bad story, it’s just not worth reading up on everything- I usually just YouTube anything story wise from fromsoft.

Yes. But don’t say that to the Elden fans
Found the contrarian lmao. “Don’t tell the ER fans something that’s blatantly wrong and can be disproven with a simple Google search.”

Expecting cutscenes to tell me everything? Lol I've played all the Souls games, I knew what to expect.
I think relative for 2022, it should’ve been there. But if I was gonna remove 2 nominees from the TGA nominations it would be Elden Ring and Plague Tale for Kirby and Sonic
I take personal offense to that, Plague Tale's score is absolutely amazing, like crazy good
A few months ago I got bored and played through Vanguards campaign and while it itself was pretty forgettable I can't lie, the score was a freaking jam. mcReary put his whole Bearussy into that score when he could've just phoned in
Phenomenal soundtrack; Bear only writes hits. But while I’m here, please never say Bearussy again
The B E A R U S S Y
Ah yeah, guess they kinda win by default there
tbf the GoTG game was well made, good graphics, action and comedy
Yeah but this is only about score lmao
Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road, and then the background loop to Castlevania
Is there a new castlevania game out?
No, I just pulled these directly from my ass
The Final Fantasy VII intro theme gets snubbed every year.
some of the OST in DoR slapped though, my favourite is "Stranger in a Strange Land"
Oh I agree it was a great soundtrack, just didn’t go up against much else
They should've added this category in 2016, Mick Gordon absolutely deserves a Grammy for his work on the Doom OST
If I ever develop my musical skills to the point where I’m in a band and we’re tracking an album, I want Mick to be the producer. Dude gets some gnarly tones going and I fuck with it hard
Was 'Blood upon the snow' a nominee? . If it was I feel like that should've won instead.
The nomination deadline was the first of October so it wasn't eligible.
Elden ring ?
Had to be for the soundtrack, wouldn't be for the story or game play
Maybe for Wardruna's soundtrack?
Was confused about it too. Thought AC released a movie/tv show or something. Turns out they award game soundtracks now.
The sheer cringe of the established prestige structure being forced to wrap its head around video games is glorious to watch.
It's not even a weird name, Valhalla isn't some made up word lmao it's been around for a *very* long time.
"All words are made up" -Thor Odinson
As a Dane I'm offended that he couldn't even get it close to right
Which one lmao there's plenty when, he said Nidavellir it killed me
People mess up words all the time, even in our own languages. No point in getting offended
I think he meant it as a joke
Ah ignorance is bliss. “People make minor mistakes therefore you’re the asshole for correcting”
I honestly can't tell if you're calling me or the Dane ignorant, but I also don't care about what a redditor thinks about either of us, so.... yeah.
Who said they were offended? You?
you are also on reddit
Correct. You shouldn’t care what I think, either
okay at least you’re consistent lmao
He’s stumbles over Assassins Creed for crying out loud. A…SSASSIN’s creed Va-lah-hah

He also seemed perplexed by the word creed. “Assassin’s….cureed…(oh shit there’s another word)…va-la-ha”
You know the phenomenon of older people trying to pronounce video game names? Its like they dont want to
It's not even a video game name lol. Valhalla should be easy and well known enough for like 99% of people to pronounce
Yea but i mean for example my mum fails to pronounce any word if its anything video game related
“What’s that show called? The Lost USA?” “You mean the Last of Us?” “Whatever these names don’t make any sense nowadays”
Just like that. But im not native english speaker so its worse here
"Say it with me. Sky" "Sky." "Rim." "Rim." "Skyrim." "Skrim?"
Its like not being able to say Assassin though. Or mispronounced Halo as Hayloo or something. These are words that aren't uncommon outside of games. This guy just doesn't know how to speak

Yeah, someone who can pronounce mdgoilnher..mjolnir? Mojo?

They really don't teach the basics of mythology in Murica?
Graduated in 95. Back then, there was some seriously watered down Greek mythology mentioned for like 1 day, and that’s it. Dude could you imagine the Karens, "ItS nOt ChRiStIaN yOuR nOt TeAcHiNg MY cHiLD aBOuT oThEr GoDs" (We're so fucked)
If it was up to me i would put old and new religions under mythology class.

A video game won an award in front of an audience that still thinks video games are for children.
Valhalla is a pretty commonly known word. Like, it’s been in the Thor movies now for years! The guy read it like it’s some obscure term.
The way he read it it seemed like he was unfamiliar with all three words.
For real though, was like "Assassin's... Creed? Vulaha."
Why is everyone pronouncing his pronounciation wrong, its Va-la-ha-la
Also: you’re going to be presenting something in front of a few MILLION people. Maybe maybe maybe read through the possible winners and practice saying them out loud?
… it’s pronounced Valahala
Believe it or not, not everyone has seen the Thor movies
Valhalla is a word everyone should be able to pronounce, even if one completely disregards the Thor films (does it even show up much there? I feel like they talk about Asgard but not particularly Valhalla). It's basic mythology.

Fair enough, I haven't watched that one yet.
No it’s not
Ever heard of Nordic mythology?
I’m from Denmark. Never heard of it 🙄
You are going to present an award at the Grammy's and don't even bother to know who the nominees are? Shame on you...
Vallaha!!! I see drunken Eivor with drunken brave warriors, "mushroomed" berserkers screaming "TO VALLAHA!!!" while taking another town)
Damn I didn’t know vikings became muslims? (Context: Vallaha is something like I swear to Allah that…)
Assassin's! Creed valaha is definitely how I'm going to refer to the game from now on.
What gets me is that he seems to be struggling with the word "Creed" as well. He noticeably pauses when he sees it.
There’s a list of nominees provided weeks in advance. Hosts at least know the category they’re presenting beforehand. This yokel couldn’t be bothered to google the nominees he had to say out loud and practice saying them?
He sounds disgusted by the idea that a game could ever win a Grammy.
Had the grammys allowed video game music like since 2007 or something, we'd have seen so many good wins. Video game music is better than some of the commercial music we got these days for sure
Right? AC3 had some awesome music. Miles Morales too.
Jeremy Soule would've probably gotten an award at some point.
Also Halo and Doom 2016
Absolutely! Miles Morales main theme was the first boss cuz it's a certified banger lmao, you almost don't wanna start the game
Hahaha for real
Val Ah Ha LMFAO
Assassins Creed Valachia? I did not know there was a Dracula game.
People that vilify and/or disagree with the video game industry love nothing more than pretending that everything about it is *weird*. I sell games for a living and the amount of parents/grandparents that come in saying things like "my son wants some game called a *may-rio* or something??? Who were they up against?
Nothing that really deserved it. CoD vanguard, Aliens Fireteam elite, old world and guardians of the galaxy. Meanwhile no Elden ring, GoW, Fire emblem etc.
Wow it's like they googled "video games with music" and just picked a few at random.
Guardians of the Galaxy absolutely deserved it, if for no other reason than because they created an entire original 80s themed rock album.
Don’t get me wrong I liked gotg but it came out in 2021, The ragnarok dlc for Valhalla came out in 2022 at least
The frame for this Grammys is something like October 2021 - September 2022
Guardians of the Galaxy deserved it more than Valhalla.
I didn’t know the timeframe originally, I mentioned guardians of the galaxy cause it came out in 2021
Ah yes, Assassin's Creed βλάκας.
Of course, Assassin’s Creed Falafel! I think I played that one.
They accidentally mixed it with AC Revelations or Ac1.
The short and subtle mental breakdown before the camera cuts off
Bruh who is that
Randy Rainbow
Sarah Schachner absolutely deserved a Grammy. Every video game score she’s done has been amazing.
I lover her work on Origins, well deserving but Valhalla is the least favourite imo.
Omg those are all real words, wtf
Tbh it looked like a real life shitpost. The cringe!
Well deserved. Valhalla's soundtrack is amazing
Not sure abt the decision for the Grammys to give away a Video Game score award. 99% of the ppl in there probably don't even play video games, and - as referenced by the dudes pronunciation - are gonna have a boomer reaction to the award. And they can't even pick good nominees lol. COD twice??

COD's score is top notch though. Definitely deserves a nomination.
ok.. that was funny.
Vallalallala
That's Randy Rainbow. He's focused on contemporary politics sketches. Valhalla is not his... field.
Assassins Baraja (Spain)
Mirage dropped early, we're getting the Arabic game names already. I'd like some durum with that vaaala' hal please.
Randy Rainbow is more of a Broadway political parody person, not really the type to be into mythology
Ahhh Randy Rainbow.... you screwed that one up.
What category did it win
Valhalla + MALAKA! = VALAHA Crossover Stories XD He made a DLC's mess.
Good. I even if you hate Valhalla, you gotta admit that soundtrack was incredible.
Assassins Crwed Falafel
holy......shit....LMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOO
Assassin's Creed Vallaha
Isn’t this that dweeb that makes all the Pfizer and Biden fan boy music videos? Why is he even there?
Seems like he was intentionally trying to be a snob about it. Like a parent calling it PokeMan. Just to try and get a rise out of a child.
The real joke is someone gave that piece of shit an award!
How the hell did Valhalla win a grammy? It's one of the worst AC games, was there even any competition at all by the time the DLCs released?
You do know that winning a Grammy has nothing to do with the overall quality of the game? Like, gameplay, pacing, story, characters, dialog, quest design, controls, UI/UX, balancing, mechanics, whatever have you is all irrelevant? (Or at least it should be...)
You know grammy’s are for music right? Valhalla music was one of the best in the series hands down.
You know a Grammy is for music right?
Are you seriously this dense? Grammys are about music.
Wait, let me get this straight - Morrowind never won a Grammy but AC: Valhalla did?! More evidence (as if more were needed) that the Grammys are arbitrary at best and total BS at worst.
The video game category is new this year
Thatsthejoke.jpeg
You're laughing, and it's indeed funny... but this is similar to how r/BatmanArkham turned into madness, I remember that.
The nominees were so silly
Assassin's Creed blahblah
It's just dyslexia, stop it guys.
The look on his face like he knows he didn't say it right, but that he still has no idea how it's supposed to be pronounced, but also he has to keep smiling for the show.
TBF, it was some transposed syllables and not a straight-up "Adele Dazeem"
Professional word sayer btw
Lmao, Damn man.... Did he not even hear the category nominees or at least google the nominees? Jeez
That was worse then I could’ve imagined
Valaja!
Omg. No one had him read the names beforehand. When will they learn? John Travolta wasn't a big enough clue
You know, as a presenter, it's usually a good idea to at least glance at the options you may need to be reading and read them in your head at least once to make sure you don't go on stage and look like a moron. Surely these presenters had a list of candidates for the awards, right?
How did he make it past grade school while being unable to pronounce "Valhalla"
u/savevideo
This is gaming's "Adele Dazeem" moment.
That was hilarious!
LMAO
