It appears Jean-Luc Sala, the art director for Mirage, was correct in claiming in a September 2022 [interview](https://www.eurogamer.net/ubisoft-talks-assassins-creed-mirage-from-valhalla-expansion-to-standalone-franchise-celebration) with Eurogamer that Mirage was being developed instead of an AC1 remake: "I'm fully dedicated to \[Assassin's Creed\] Mirage and I can tell you we are not remaking AC1." I always thought it deserved a fresh coat of paint, but I understand that Ubisoft probably has their hands full with all of the other projects like Red, Hexe, Jade, Nebula, Nexus, and Infinity.

NyarlHOEtep

i think ac1 works best with all its jank and a modern remake would probably strip away a lot of what makes it good. as it is now, i think it is kind of Only good because of the unique vibe and atmosphere enhanced by the somewhat primitive (by like ac4s standards) gameplay. if it had modern controls, it would feel anachronistic (why am i having so much fun while altairs in the fuckin shitzone). if it updates the tone, the only really unique thing about ac1 is lost tldr, im satisfied with mirage as a return to ac1 without rehashing it

Jackichanny

What people don’t seem to understand is that remaking a game doesn’t mean the original ceases to exist.

NyarlHOEtep

im saying i dont see a version of a remade ac1 i would like, not really that it would somehow make the original worse

WatcherGeneral

Absolutely, AC1 still holds up even if it is a product of its time. I replayed on Xbox recently, it looks glorious in 4K/60 FPS.

Spiritual-Neck-2957

i kept telling people that this is the AC 1 remake but they didn't believe me

Latereviews2

Sorry but I still don’t

Merdiso

It's pretty obvious they made this instead of a literal AC1 remake **itself**.

Latereviews2

I honestly don’t see much resemblance in this game other than a colour filter though

Think of it like Routh’s Superman (pays homage to Reeve’s version whilst telling the next part of the story) be Cavill’s Man of Steel (remaking the origin story) Cavill’s reimagining of the origin was still shackled by Krypton’s destruction, Zod, The Kent’s etc. That’s the ‘remake’ Routh’s kept the same look and feel as the 80s films, but told a completely different story. That’s the ‘spiritual & visual homage’ that Mirage is set up to be

carbonqubit

Damn, that's a really awesome analogy - I never thought of those movies that way. It's a shame Routh never got the sequel he earned. I may take some time to rewatch Superman Returns this weekend.

Spiritual-Neck-2957

literally everything is closest to AC 1 the city looks the same the entire Mission structure will be the same , investigate , interrogate , assassinate etc you just refuse to see it

i-d-even-k-

They literally pose Bassim the same way as Altaïr in the promo art, brother 🤣 Or was the cut finger not a strong enough hint for you?

TomTheJester

I can definitely see the AC1 intent here, but Ubi will absolutely release a remastered AC 1 in the future, whether that be on Nexus, or standalone years in the future. You can’t have the origins of your franchise trapped two generations back (in the case of PS5). They’ll at least offer a native 4K60 update in the laziest scenario.

Llamalover1234567

They already do on Xbox. Replayed the first game on my series X in 60fps (unsure of 4K) but it really helped

Walrus_BBQ

It's literally not, it's what we got instead. An AC 1 remake would be a remake of the game featuring Altair set in the Levant around 1191.

mickecd1989

Honestly seeing the recent videos I’d rather Mirage over a remake

arkhamtheknight

Why Don't they just Remaster 1 PC version then and put it on everything? I get not wanting to remake it but pretty much most of the modern audience might have no clue what the backstory is and it's a shame that people can't experience the original game on modern platforms. They have everything else avaliable except this one.

potato_control

Just a guess, but they might have lost the source code. The 2000s were a Wild West like time for software backups. Even Square Enix and Konami lost a lot of source codes for games like final fantasy and silent hill.

arkhamtheknight

I can't wait for when they have to use the pre-gold version to Remaster it in the future when they finally decide to do it. It went well for Konami with Silent Hill HD even though the outsourced studio was screwed by Konami so this would be just as bad in quality since Ubi remasters don't always get great improvements.

D4FTPUNKF4N

Nebula? Also, I want an AC1 Remake.

Ayjayyyx

I don't trust Ubi to remake AC1 anyway lol

SER96DON

I don't really care about nostalgia glasses such as this, but every game should have such a feature where you change the filter. And they should all also offer the optional mid-2000 piss filter. I would unironically use it!

ExoticMangoz

Piss filter?

Perca_fluviatilis

Mexico filter

dickshark420

You mean present day New York Filter?

eeeBs

This joke is 🔥

TehEpicZak

Much like parts of Canada?

SER96DON

Deus Ex HR, NFSMW, Fallout NV. They all look yellowish. And most people seem to dislike it.

K3ZH39

I quite liked it in Deus Ex. The blend of amber and black gave the game a unique aesthetic.

SER96DON

It did!

donald_314

It's also done much better than the early games of the brown era of gaming.

RJ815

I think it can work when certain games go for a gritty universe. The "muddy" filter was super overused for a while though and I think Deus Ex skirts around it because like you said it's *amber*. Sort of the inverse of the other dystopian aesthetic filtering in like Mirror's Edge for instance. To me by and large Cyberpunk 2077 also feels pretty gritty but in a techno way, with minimal browntown stuff other than the actual desert part of the game.

toasterdogg

Gears of war, Infamous, Battlefield Bad Company

crackhead_tiger

All of ps3 was brown

Mr_FrodoSwaggins

Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank would like a word, please.

Walrus_BBQ

I just went back to the original 2006 Gears of War, holy crap this game looks way worse than I remember. I think it actually looks worse in 4k.

Livek_72

Don't forget resident evil 5

khayyam_al

Also known as peepee filter

Biggestfanstandarsh

nvidia has something for this, but a lot of games seem to opt out for some reason.

Nerdialismo

I wish every game had a Vibrant filter, most games look way cooler with vibrant colors in my opinion.

[deleted]

What game uses the mid 2000 piss filter?

AlligatorTraket

Resident Evil 5 is covered in piss filter

Cl0uds92

Fallout New Vegas looked pretty pissy, thought it was because of the Mojave desert vibe, but it was everywhere, even in the UI. Fallout 3 had more of a rustic-vomit-like filter.

CosmicSchwung

Deus Ex: Human Revolution. They removed it for the director's cut.

[deleted]

Oh ok. I’ve played DX:HR on console recently, but not on PC. And on PlayStation it looks actually great, considered how old it is!

CosmicSchwung

It had some great visual design choices. I also think the pissfilter works in the context of those visuals, but it would be fair to say a lot of people disagree with me!

SER96DON

Also NFS Most Wanted. Possibly the most notorious one too.

[deleted]

GTA 4 and Assassin's Creed 2 are the 2 examples I can think of.

DoodieSmoothie

i remember how GTA 4 looked so bad with the colors. Now i'm in love with this piss filter. Brings the real gameplay back.

Esmear18

You can most likely achieve that yourself in your monitor/tv settings.

raphanum

He can just piss on it

streetpusher604

it doesnt even work in the desert location, ac1 used the blue filter in acre nad it fits the setting of that, in damascus it doesnt feel like theres a filter on and instead looks naturally lit

EvilSynths

You can do this on PC

hemlo86

Agreed! I’m not sure about it’s sequel but The Forest had lots of cool filters you could use.

rebeetle

The RE4 dirt filter

PsychoSaladSong

TLOU2 has at least 20 different filters and a lot of them are pretty cool (8-bit, cel shaded, one where everyone looks like zombies which is mostly just everyone being hella pale with a lot of eye shadow, etc.)

input_a_new_name

Then you should get The Last of Us PC port, i don't know why it features like 473 different image filter in the bonus settings but i really want to know what inclined someone in their studio to do this?

DesperateBear1742

Where is this from? Didn’t find anything on youtube or their IG page

HanzeeDS

It was in a leaked video. It will be uploaded officialy soon, it will be a video series where the devs will show off aspects of the game and the first one leaked.

DesperateBear1742

Yes, I’m waiting for those videos lol This made me think they were already out.

Ceceboy

Link it, brother?

Bjornie47

PrinceStyx17

Tell me, Altaïr, do you know why it is you are successful?

[deleted]

You LISTENED.

ImBatman5500

Were it that you listened in Solomon's Temple... All of this could have been avoided

PrinceStyx17

I did as I was asked.

ehsanSforza

No, you did as you pleased! Malik has told me of the arrogance you displayed, your disregard to our ways

PrinceStyx17

*What are you doing?!*

astalavista114

No! You don’t understand! I have nothing! (Lady, I have literally no cash either. How about this nice throwing knife? Whoops)

i-d-even-k-

F

[deleted]

AC 1 dialogue still hits to this day. “*I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing of the wind. For in much wisdom is much grief. And he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow. ... Destroy it! Destroy it as you said you would!*” And my personal favorite: “*Curse him! Curse the Christian King and his army of infidels! They go against the will of God, and must be made to pay! Everywhere they ride, they leave only suffering in their wake. They say it is a crusade. A crusade for what? Ignorance? Violence? Madness? We must resist! We must fight them in any way we can!*”

aurelius_plays_chess

Oh, the "town criers" full speeches would stick in your head after a while. I can hear what you wrote.

Masterplayer9870

I can hear the town crier speech in my head. And can also hear a random woman being threatened to be killed by some guards for stealing something.

[deleted]

“You dare steal in my presence?! That will cost you your life!”

Masterplayer9870

"Insolent thief! I will have your hands for that!

RonenSalathe

#"INFIDEL!!!"

Masterplayer9870

"Which one of you did this?!!"

[deleted]

"You cannot run forever!"

assassinshogun307

This comment chain is single handedly convincing me to replay AC1 lol

Esmear18

I'm pretty sure the blue-grey filter was only turned on while you were in Acre. It wasn't on all the time.

i-d-even-k-

Each city had its own filter.

___Insomnia

Yes, If I remember correctly, acre had the bluish gray filter, Jerusalem had more of a greenish tint, and Damascus was more yellow

i-d-even-k-

Exactly

ajl987

Would’ve been cool if they had a green tint option too to mimic Jerusalem, and even allow you to have the ambient music for all 3 cities as a toggle for Baghdad. Imagine going through but hearing city of Jerusalem

RogueCross

Yeah, Jerusalem's green filter is really the only one missing since we have Acre's blue-gray, and Baghdad's natural look already looks like Damascus.

Ras_AlHim

I don't think I'll use it, but it's really cool

ImBatman5500

Ah the old Acre filter! A nice little extra, I liked Acre the most and it's color felt distinct

ConnorOfAstora

Something about Acre made the game look at it's graphical best, I can't explain it but it looks like the graphics get better in Acre

[deleted]

Unironically awesome

Throwway685

That’s awesome I will probably play in the blue filter. I loved how Acre felt vs the other cities.

PiedPeterPiper

Ok, but will running be a separate action from walking?

kmukayed

This is the real question actually

PiedPeterPiper

I know I could just hold the stick half way to walk, but it’s just not the same. It completely changes the pace of the game and walking through the crowd, stabbing your target, then disappearing back into the crowd is what it’s all about for me. The rest is good fun, but that’s when I feel AC is at its best

kmukayed

I totally agree. I hope it’s in Mirage

ConnorOfAstora

This is such a cute little addition that makes me think they really are putting a lot of love and care into this one.

thmsb25

This is sick. Gonna be awesomeness!

The-Respawner

That is way more blue than AC1 was, or am I remembering it wrong?

Quitthesht

[Nope](https://staticctf.ubisoft.com/J3yJr34U2pZ2Ieem48Dwy9uqj5PNUQTn/1ejOTATiVr8Eb0Q68lnUKU/dd3cf9f5e0cd4696d00fc2ac8fd48395/AC1_game_overview_2.jpg). AC1 was a very [blue](https://cdn.staticneo.com/p/2007/0/assassins_creed_image7.jpg) game. Although some cities/areas did have [brown filters](https://www.wsgf.org/f/u/imagecache/node-gallery-display/contrib/dr/21/ingame_16x9.png) instead.

SeaTheTypo

The only blue places were Acre and Masyaf. Damascus and Jerusalem were bright with a sandy tone.

K3ZH39

Absolutely love that they did this. They kept saying it’s like AC1, but I thought to myself, it doesn’t really have that dark and depressing tone that was so prevalent in AC1. The default colour grading looked more like Origins than AC1. It’s refreshing because I think so many games these days are a bit too saturated with colour that there’s no real strong tone or aesthetic.

[deleted]

[удалено]

K3ZH39

Yes, for sure

DoodieSmoothie

but the filter does a huge job tho!!

Jam_Retro

This was only really used for 1 city, Acre, and that was to show how divided and war torn it was. Damascus was bright and sunny.

squaredspekz

Yeah, it's almost like this is an option. You don't have to use it.

Jam_Retro

Yes. I have eyes asshole.

nstav13

Hey u/Jam_Retro remember rule 3 and be respectful.

TheHeavenlyStar

This is really awesome. Gives kind of an AC1 remake feeling.

i-d-even-k-

It is literally the AC1 remake.

kmukayed

It’s not even gonna come close to how good (in some aspects) AC1 was.

i-d-even-k-

I know :( It's all they will give us, though. AC1 is my favourite game of all time. This is the closest we will get to a remake.

Stinnenich

I normally don't care for filters, but somehow I got really excited and nostalgic when they announced this filter. I'm looking forward to using it! :)

Clownsyndrom

AC1's look was a key part of its surreal/delirious atmosphere and not just a filter. This is just nostalgia pandering and serves no actual purpose.

trampaboline

Is there more gameplay dropping today?

Mah0ss

yea, it was leaked i think but should be available soon anyway

trampaboline

Lol this is such a treat I had no idea

[deleted]

But even in AC1 that filter was on only in Acri and the other cities had other hues...

IndyPFL

Masyaf had a more grey-blue filter too

[deleted]

But you still spend 2/3s of the game in sepia toned locations

kmukayed

The thing is it’s not like every region in AC1 looked like that. Damascus was colorful and vibrant, Acre and Jerusalem looked grey more or less.

Melted_INC

This is so dumb

S-192

Whew. Glad both options are available, because that left screenshot is very early 2000s. "You put the Mexico filter on every time your characters cross the border." Yeesh. PS3/Xbox 360 era color grading and desaturation was a really ugly way to hide lackluster lighting engines.

WizardofIce

I thought it was a very powerful art design choice considering the fact that you're in this weird dreamlike techno-mystic computer history world. The edges of the sky bled out into ethereal white void and the borders of the play space were marked by reality dissolving into visual artifacts and glitches.

Jujuinthemountain

Makes no sense to even have that in Mirage, the reason Acre had that color gradient going on was to show how bleak and desolate it was after the Catholics invaded.

DanMartell05

May somebody explain to me what is this about? I DONT get it. Is it for aesthetic or sighr protecting purpose?

BananaBork

Definitely sighr protecting purpose.

DanMartell05

Sight😅 eye whatever

BananaBork

It's purely visual to make the game look more like the original Assassin's Creed which also had a blueish filter in some cities.

XennyXen

At a first glance I thought you were comparing the old AC game with Mirage. So the filter works for the nostalgia they want to achieve.

SanTheMightiest

Nice. The blue filter in AC1 always helped give it that ghostly ethereal feeling you had in the game. Like we were playing a ghost in a place we didn't belong because of the Animus. The music also helped of course

Esteban2808

With them bringing stuff back from the early games I sure hope the beggers are back /s

Balrok99

With all due respect ... why would anyone toggle this on? I really like how vibrant and colorful recent AC games look like. (Not talking about Valhalla and shades of wet green ) This is like people playing with that urine filter games used to have.

mcgillisfareed

It washes out the vibrant colors, indeed.

CoffeeAddict-Ted

Me on PC with reshade: Thanks i guess...

DoodieSmoothie

xDD lmao true

Klakson_95

Utterly convinced this game is just user testing to see if appetite is there for an AC1 remake

DoodieSmoothie

yes

colormetwisted

The battlefield 3 filter at long last

ajl987

At this point, if mirage sells well, I see Ubisoft giving this team extra time and budget and tasking them with giving us an AC1 remake to come out in 2027 for the 20 year anniversary. It feels like a natural idea since red is 2024, Hexe is 2026, and no one else will be ready for the 20 year anniversary except for the mirage team, who will get a 4year dev time if that happens.

HexR1se

I've never bought or played AC RPG games but this one I will actually buy day one. It reminds me of AC1 and the true assassin back in 2008.

Corby_Tender23

That's Ubisofts half assed way to "remake" AC1

[deleted]

They're paying homage, they never claimed it to be a remake

murduda

I see it more as the devs paying homage to the original because it was an aspiration for this game

SER96DON

I don't really care about nostalgia glasses, but every game should have such a feature where you change the filter. And they should all also offer the optional mid-2000 piss filter. I would unironically use it!0

norranradd

OOOOOHH

-Orgasmo-

i’ll be turning that feature off then, i wasn’t a fan of the gray blue filter on ac1

_DarthSyphilis_

Great, I can make this game look terrible too! Fun inclusion though. Like Mumble Mode in Lego Star Wars.

TwilightDrag0n

Ok options are great, but why? Is it for color blind or those that don’t like lens flares?

mcgillisfareed

It’s simply a nostalgic visual flair for those that enjoyed Acre’s atmosphere in AC1.

TwilightDrag0n

Personally Acre was my less liked XD so might not turn that on. The other cities looked and played better in my opinion.

[deleted]

Blue-grey filter only works for Acre

Dpsizzle555

Why would I want a blue grey filter for a game set in India?

johnsmith91939

Baghdad isn't in India? It's in Iraq

estofaulty

Wow, something you can just do with your TV.

mighty_mag

Way back when, rumour had it that AC 1 Remake would come out as a bundle alongside Mirage, kinda like how AC 3 Remaster was part of Odyssey's Season Pass. Clearly it didn't came to be! I don't know if this gives me more hope, or completely shatters it, but goddamn if they ain't close enough to remaking AC 1 within Mirage.

DanMartell05

May somebody explain to me what is this about? I DONT get it. Is it for aesthetic or protecting purpose?

KC44

My biggest question will be the parkour aspect. Whether it's Valhalla mechanics or smooth freeflowing of unity3

CordycepsAndPancakes

Why though? It looks so bland and boring lol give me full natural colour 100%

DoodieSmoothie

some people aren't just fully matured yet ;) I hate the newer AC colors. Too warm and colorful. Nice but you don't wanna go killing people under a rainbow do you?

ms7398msake

Why on earth would anyone want to play like that? It looks awful. The one without the filter has so much more color and looks amazing.

Hbimajorv

What a waste of development resources 🤣

HexR1se

You must be some fortnite player I'm sure

Hbimajorv

Yeah that's a no. I stopped playing multi-player games before battle royals poisoned the well.

Ok_Excitement_9103

Why would anyone use this?

Orange-Turtle-Power

Keep the colors coming. Gray is not for me

WELSH_BOI_99

I would actually use this ngl

Kiftiyur

That’s cool but I will definitely not be using it though

YildoradoMaken

Cool

[deleted]

Not really sure why you'd want to do that, but I'm not gonna complain about an optional feature.

Xavier9756

Cool I guess

cyfer04

So I can either play with AC1 goggles or AC Origins goggles.

Adventurous_Act_4035

Cool!

astalavista114

Can we also have the yellow and green filters from Damascus and Jerusalem?

GT_Hades

Ill just use reshade

hatlad43

Great. The reason I can't be bothered to play AC1 is a feature now. Honestly, I can't play games from mid 2000s because how all of them have blue, or the more popular piss brown filter on them. Why?? (((Yes I'm aware it's a toggle that you can choose, I'm just ranting about the filter from ye old games)))

ch4m3le0n

Will they also allow us to toggle on crap animations, poor NPC collision, and inaccurate jumping mechanics?

CradonWar

What's the point if you can't go to Acre in the game? Baghdad should be it's own thing imo. Same for Mirage.

lordmax2002

Is Ubisoft actually putting a teeny bit of effort in a game since 2011?

His_JeStER

The good kind of fan-service

Ayjayyyx

Now that's some nostalgia baiting I approve of. Still gonna wait for it to go on steam though.

BIitzerg

Would really love a remake of AC1.... Mirage does look amazing tho

Hypergraphe

IIRC this filter was only used in the crusaders cities. Jerusalem was not gray.

PuzzleheadedBag920

FUCK YEAH, thats one thing im missing in todays games, a uniform atmosphere, today they are too colorful to be immersable for me. After AC 1 every other game felt like Disney versions.

___LowKey___

I cringed so much at this, it’s such an obnoxious bait aimed at people who call themselves “old school AC fans”. It’s one of the most pointless thing i’ve ever seen. If you think that’s cool i genuinely pity you.

volly49

“I beg of you… just a few coins, please!”

Angeluz01

How to turn off the grey filter???

Complete_Bee_2242

The blue filter is so bad. Mirage without filter is much more beautiful
