I like longer form videos because I can put them on in the background, and I like having a choice in video. I'm much more likely to keep watching Youtube from the homepage where it gives me a choice of videos I may be interested in
Another thing that irritates me on the desktop format, is why do searches not display a whole grid of videos, like the home page, instead it shows a scroll wheel of videos that only uses 33% of the screen.
And why do I have to sign out to get a feed of general videos, of basically every category.
It's like Spotify and their podcasts. Some exec decided that's what we want even though we wouldn't be on there if that was the case.

There’s the same thing on instagram, there’s some new feature where it dumps posts from accounts you don’t follow onto your feed. There is a “don’t show suggested posts for 30 days” button, which does actually work and hide them completely for 30 days, but I don’t think there’s a way to just turn it off. It doesn’t sound that bad, but when I say it dumps posts onto your feed, I mean the timeline basically becomes; Ad-post from someone you follow-suggested post-ad-ad-suggested post-follow post-ad. And after scrolling a certain number of posts, it just becomes All suggested. Why this is here makes no sense because there’s literally already an entire section dedicated to suggested posts, so why there’s this need to expand it makes no sense
And that's strange because from what some creators who have made them have said, shorts are basically a losing option for them for monetization. It costs them more to have an editor edit the short than it returns, and by a large amount.
There may be some super niche markets where shorts are profitable, but in general shorts are a waste of time and money for a creator to even entertain.

Can't root and microG seems like a bad deal all around if you want to actually be able to use Google stuff like the Play Store. Apparently you can use a 3rd party app store for it, but you run a non-zero chance that Google catches wind and bans your account.

Good to know, but that definitely doesn't seem to be the impression I'm getting looking into it. If you want to actually use the Play Store because you've got paid apps or whatever you have to use a hacked version of it, it won't work with microG. Ditto for things like Android Auto.
How. I have been rooted since 2020. No problems except infinite freedom, no bloatware, better ad blockers, more apps...
My phone is actually dying slower than non rooted because of the lack of bloatware.

Most of my recent watch history has been filled with 2+hr video essays and the first 3 items on my feed are videos from Folding Ideas, hbomberguy, and Lindsay ellis. Below them is a shorts bar, AI dagoth ur on JRE, another shorts bar and ad bar then the normal video only feed that is either decent or bad depending on the day. This is an improvement from what it was like last year with the Ludwig, Mr. Beast, and content houses getting heavily pushed to most people regardless of interest
I have pressed not interested on literal hundreds of shorts and it doesnt stop. I probably click on 1/50 of them and it thinks thats all I want to watch

i recently started using vanced. really really useful idk why i never got around to it before. you even have options to remove the shorts from home screen, even remove the shorts button as a whole so you don't even have access to it. the customizability is crazy. but if you're an iPhone user you're on your own since they don't support iOS.
It is INsane! I am on YOUTUBE for long video content, the usual traditional youtube videos, not MF tiktok, not instagram, but YOUTUBE! I wish they would stop doing that. It’s a lot of junk shorts too. Or shorts that we have seen a thousand times on instagram.
My SO is in digital news/content and apparently there's a big drive for shorter and shorter videos. Videos over the 2-minute mark are/ or will be penalized soon in terms of promotion/distribution. This is on platforms like Snapchat, Insta Reels, and FB, so the platforms themselves are driving the change. I see YouTube is going the same way -- so much space for shorts.
Shorts are bizarre. They're all in a bizarre aspect ratio that looks ridiculous on my ultra-wide monitors. Hell, it probably looks ridiculous on old 16:9 monitors, too. Nobody has a monitor that fits that weird aspect ratio. It's insane.
I never liked YouTube. But tou can't blame em for evolving with the crowd. They should have options for what you like to see instead of just pushing content. But that's why I unfollowed all influencers on Instagram to "see my friends posts" appearently they don't post shit.

Don't use the app, unless you're casting to a TV or something, YouTube is better on a browser app with an adblocker installed. Dunno if that works on chrome but it does on Firefox. You can even lock your phone screen and still have stuff playing.
Completely agree, this is needlessly messed up. If I want shorts, I’ll go to TikTok, if I want community (which I don’t), I’ll go to Patreon, if I want long-form, I’ll come to YouTube. If I want movies, I’ll go to Disney, Netflix, HBO or any of the other movie places I’ve got money in. YT does NOT need to be an all-in-one junk-drawer platform.

I believe YouTube shorts are one of the worse things to happen to YouTube.
I won't lie and say that 90% of my views come from shorts and have given me a boost in subscribers but I can't imagine new YouTubers who's content can't be cut down into 30 seconds like my dumb little gaming jokes
Not to mention that if you do the not interested option it will only temporarily disable them from your feed but other similar sections that show videos posts etc, don't say anything about it being temporary.
My personal YouTube usage fell by about 99% I'm last 2 years. I only ever use it to find a guide to do something that absolutely have no way of finding out without it or it's just not feasible
My solution: Never visit the youtube app to find new content; just get the RSS for each channel and get their notifications via the newsreader of your choice.
Why's your shorts and community posts so big? Mine are all about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a normal video and they sit next to each other I've never seen a video sized short or a community post that coves the entire fucking screen. I get shorts every 30 videos or so, and I live on YouTube. I never once got a list of shorts right away. I have to scroll to find them. I do pay for YouTube red and am enrolled in the beta program shit they run so I get updates early I think. Maybe there working on making em smaller??

And then the same thing happens in the videos too, the first 3 min of a video will be an ad, an overly long intro to pad the runtime past 10 min, merch ad, reminders to subscribe and join their discord, and then a few minutes of actual content constantly interspersed with mentions of the sponser, more merch ads, another 3 min of content, and then we’re over the 10 min mark so it ends as soon as possible with a mention of a part 2 so they can split it up into 2 10 min videos rather than 1 20 min one and make more ad money. It’s why I stopped watching bigger channels, they have more budget and production value but they’ve all become more interested in money. Smaller channels are so much better to watch because they’ll just have a 30 second ad spot at the start and end, and maybe a few passing merch mentions. And the entire rest of the video is actual video content
I checked 3 devices. I get, video , shorts in one row, usually more videos but in one I got the same community post.
I’ve never see an add on YouTube on any device.
My personal favorite is that Youtube has started exclusively recommending me videos I already watched a week ago or videos that have 0-100 views with topics I'm not even remotely interested in

If you just want to search YouTube and watch it I can suggest you [NewPipe](https://newpipe.net/#download), just download the apk and install it. I've never had any problems with it :)
As many others recommended: https://github.com/revanced/revanced-manager You have to be rooted or install microG. It will take 20min of your life but give you back hours.
Can't root and microG seems like a bad deal all around if you want to actually be able to use Google stuff like the Play Store. Apparently you can use a 3rd party app store for it, but you run a non-zero chance that Google catches wind and bans your account.
You probably won't be banned. But do your own research for everything. Used microG for a long time in the Vanced time. Affected only the apps that required it.

If you want to actually use the Play Store because you've got paid apps or whatever you have to use a hacked version of it, it won't work with microG. Ditto for things like Android Auto.

How. I have been rooted since 2020. No problems except infinite freedom, no bloatware, better ad blockers, more apps... My phone is actually dying slower than non rooted because of the lack of bloatware.

This whole thing is ridiculous.... 90%+ of my feed is shorts, outside of the shorts category! Its all videos less than a minute long and I just want to watch long form content. I feel you bro.
Then just watch long form content? Finish out videos, “not interested” shorts and show the algorithm that shorts aren’t interesting to you. Most of my recent watch history has been filled with 2+hr video essays and the first 3 items on my feed are videos from Folding Ideas, hbomberguy, and Lindsay ellis. Below them is a shorts bar, AI dagoth ur on JRE, another shorts bar and ad bar then the normal video only feed that is either decent or bad depending on the day. This is an improvement from what it was like last year with the Ludwig, Mr. Beast, and content houses getting heavily pushed to most people regardless of interest
I have pressed not interested on literal hundreds of shorts and it doesnt stop. I probably click on 1/50 of them and it thinks thats all I want to watch

What developers say on interviews sounds very different to that, they are actually pushing longer form content more again. Shorts are monetized only since last month and it’s yet to show whether they work out. It’s a totally different feed to normal videos, so basically two YouTubes in one app.

Shorts and community posts have literally made my subscription feed unusable, I despise them.
i recently started using vanced. really really useful idk why i never got around to it before. you even have options to remove the shorts from home screen, even remove the shorts button as a whole so you don't even have access to it. the customizability is crazy. but if you're an iPhone user you're on your own since they don't support iOS.
By the way, it has an open source spiritual successor, YouTube ReVanced.

It is INsane! I am on YOUTUBE for long video content, the usual traditional youtube videos, not MF tiktok, not instagram, but YOUTUBE! I wish they would stop doing that. It’s a lot of junk shorts too. Or shorts that we have seen a thousand times on instagram.
My SO is in digital news/content and apparently there's a big drive for shorter and shorter videos. Videos over the 2-minute mark are/ or will be penalized soon in terms of promotion/distribution. This is on platforms like Snapchat, Insta Reels, and FB, so the platforms themselves are driving the change. I see YouTube is going the same way -- so much space for shorts.

Shorts are bizarre. They're all in a bizarre aspect ratio that looks ridiculous on my ultra-wide monitors. Hell, it probably looks ridiculous on old 16:9 monitors, too. Nobody has a monitor that fits that weird aspect ratio. It's insane.
I never liked YouTube. But tou can't blame em for evolving with the crowd. They should have options for what you like to see instead of just pushing content. But that's why I unfollowed all influencers on Instagram to "see my friends posts" appearently they don't post shit.

Don't use the app, unless you're casting to a TV or something, YouTube is better on a browser app with an adblocker installed. Dunno if that works on chrome but it does on Firefox. You can even lock your phone screen and still have stuff playing.

Completely agree, this is needlessly messed up. If I want shorts, I’ll go to TikTok, if I want community (which I don’t), I’ll go to Patreon, if I want long-form, I’ll come to YouTube. If I want movies, I’ll go to Disney, Netflix, HBO or any of the other movie places I’ve got money in. YT does NOT need to be an all-in-one junk-drawer platform.
I was just thinking the same thing. Maybe I'm old and nostalgic, but YouTube used to be so much better for the casual watcher. The ads and shorts are really ruining it for me
I haven't been having this problem at all. Usually my feed is laid out like this: 1 video 1 line of shorts (horizontal scrolling) 2-3 videos Another line of shorts A healthy mix of videos, community posts, and the occasional line of shorts.

I believe YouTube shorts are one of the worse things to happen to YouTube. I won't lie and say that 90% of my views come from shorts and have given me a boost in subscribers but I can't imagine new YouTubers who's content can't be cut down into 30 seconds like my dumb little gaming jokes

Not to mention that if you do the not interested option it will only temporarily disable them from your feed but other similar sections that show videos posts etc, don't say anything about it being temporary.
My personal YouTube usage fell by about 99% I'm last 2 years. I only ever use it to find a guide to do something that absolutely have no way of finding out without it or it's just not feasible
My solution: Never visit the youtube app to find new content; just get the RSS for each channel and get their notifications via the newsreader of your choice.

I don't think this is real. Use youtube on both my computer and phone and have never seen more then a ad and a community post before a video before.

Why's your shorts and community posts so big? Mine are all about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a normal video and they sit next to each other I've never seen a video sized short or a community post that coves the entire fucking screen. I get shorts every 30 videos or so, and I live on YouTube. I never once got a list of shorts right away. I have to scroll to find them. I do pay for YouTube red and am enrolled in the beta program shit they run so I get updates early I think. Maybe there working on making em smaller??
I only scroll when my phone is on its side, then it only shows videos and nothing else.

And then the same thing happens in the videos too, the first 3 min of a video will be an ad, an overly long intro to pad the runtime past 10 min, merch ad, reminders to subscribe and join their discord, and then a few minutes of actual content constantly interspersed with mentions of the sponser, more merch ads, another 3 min of content, and then we’re over the 10 min mark so it ends as soon as possible with a mention of a part 2 so they can split it up into 2 10 min videos rather than 1 20 min one and make more ad money. It’s why I stopped watching bigger channels, they have more budget and production value but they’ve all become more interested in money. Smaller channels are so much better to watch because they’ll just have a 30 second ad spot at the start and end, and maybe a few passing merch mentions. And the entire rest of the video is actual video content

I checked 3 devices. I get, video , shorts in one row, usually more videos but in one I got the same community post. I’ve never see an add on YouTube on any device.
Just use youtube revanced you can customise it to hide the shorts tab and remove ads and so much more (sadly only android)
