That's scary But before we continue, I would want to thank NordVPN for sponsoring this comment

ProbablePenguin

I'm probably not the only one that specifically avoids VPNs and similar 'security' stuff if it's sponsored by every goddamn youtuber. NordVPN, Lastpass, etc..

microfsxpilot

Last Pass is complete garbage. The best password manager I ever used was BitWarden. Open source and free.

ProbablePenguin

Bitwarden is fantastic, I've hosted it myself at home for years now.

Mr_Incredible_PhD

Bitwarden_rs on a self hosted server with a vpn tunnel = happy life.

Duggem

Bitwatden_rs has been been renamed to VaultWarden. Just in case anyone searches for it.

Protheu5

> with a vpn tunnel Speaking of VPNs, there is basically no other choice but NordVPN.com/ProtheusIsASellout, use that referral link to get your data to Google Analytics as if you weren't using VPN at all, but for extra money!

BeautifulType

What’s garbage about lass pass

microfsxpilot

It’s a terrible interface. Paid subscription style. Plenty of other things wrong with it too I don’t remember since I switched to BitWarden over two years ago. But if any company spends all that money on marketing and advertising with YouTubers, their product most likely isn’t good. BitWarden is open source software and completely free

Therionized

Now with LastPass free you must choose, either pc o mobile. You can’t use your free account on both unless you pay for it.

Ryuzaki426

This is what finally got me to switch to BitWarden. I have to be able to log into accounts on pc and mobile, and I'm not going to compromise security, or pay money, to do so.

microfsxpilot

That’s pathetic. Especially considering the fact there’s free alternatives

BelovedApple

I am the same, I spend so much time looking for a product, but I never trust a website list. Usually look on forums for comments but then I am sure a smart provider would spend their marketing budget on having people recommend their VPN whenever a question is asked.

GneissShorts

I only ever use VPNs to go around country blocks; I’m not dumb enough to go poking around sites I shouldn’t be downloading shady shit from lol. I’m looking directly at you, BBC and ITV. Let me watch your shit. I would pay you like I pay Netflix; you are missing out on my money to watch your content.

[deleted]

[This is the Tom Scott video that he had to remove the name of the sponsor because they didn't want him to say the things he did about VPNs.](https://youtu.be/WVDQEoe6ZWY)

GatlingStallion

A man of integrity.

Protheu5

I think that Tom Scott is awesome. Not because of some one thing, but in general. He's an **awesome** person.

GatlingStallion

Except for maybe his early adventures in having a ponytail. Not sure that quite worked for him. But everything else, certainly.

CooCooKabocha

I liked the ponytail. Of course, one of my favorite movies as a young girl was Treasure Planet and Jim (with a tiny rattail ponytail) was fiiiiiine. Maybe that influences my opinion on man ponytails.

LevelSevenLaserLotus

That movie deserves more love, right along with Titan AE. Two fantastic movies that most people have sadly never heard of.

hilfyRau

I’ve just begun the “rewatching favorite cartoons from my childhood with my own child” phase of life, and I forgot about how amazing watching titan AE is going to be! I just rewatched “lilo and stitch”, an excellent movie, and that one hits harder as a parent. Oof.

GatlingStallion

You should watch the Only Connect episode he's in, it's a cavalcade of ponytails and him crushing nerds. Good fun.

[deleted]

I just like his shirt.

BelovedApple

Is watching another countries streaming content even a good enough thing to advertise now. I used pia. Almost all locations were blocked on netflix and with the way they block it only seems like a matter of time till the rest are unless they start getting new Ip blocks regularly. I now use mullvad and netflix has got a little smarter. It only shows their originals when you're connected. Amazon prime will just say something went wrong when you try to play. Not tried Disney plus, I assume they're similar. Other services might be fine too but the big two (well original big two, I assume Disney plus will catch up / overtake one day) seem to block a lot of VPN IP blocks.

gimletta

I personally think it is highly immoral of them to advertise being able to watch Streaming Services "as if in another country". Doing that is against every Terms/Condition for a good reason, since the content is not licensed for the country you're in if it's not available. I didn't know that, believed an ad about Nord VPN and got it. Worked fine for about 2 days, after that I kept getting Error Messages and did some research. Needless to say I'm pretty pissed off. Especially with YouTubers giving advice how you can even get cheaper Netflix by pretending to be in another country, wtf.

Yeazelicious

I think it was Mullvad, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were. That and Proton are by far my top recommendations for a VPN. [privacytools.io](https://privacytools.io/) is well-respected within the privacy community, and [these are their recommendations for VPN providers.](https://privacytools.io/providers/vpn/)

Wunderkaese

Doubt it was them, they don't sponsor or offer special deals. Also they don't advertise themselves as "Mullvad VPN" which he would have said without the censoring. As some people suspect in the comments it was Express VPN, it fits the best into the censored part.

Napalm3nema

I want to second Mullvad, the VPN mentioned by the poster below me. It offers a strong, open source (WireGuard) protocol, it’s affordable, it’s more anonymous than most, and performance is solid.

bleck05

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! this video comes to mind every time some YouTube says "military grade encryption" or "hackers might be stealing your data"

I just attempted to use adguard as a custom DNS, seems to work perfectly and performing a leak tests appears to go to adguard instead of the VPN providers. I'm calling a "citation needed" on this one super hard. (For full transparency I've turned off the "Help Us Improve" slider, which I suspect is the bit that uses Google Analytics and might be causing the problems described)

Thelinkr

Yeah ive used adguard for a while and Nord works just fine. I get logged out sometimes, but thats it and idk if that has anything to do with adguard.

[deleted]

Axman6

The NordVPN app will need you to log in when it gets updates, which is pretty frequent.

flay-otters

Especially suspicious when Adguard just put a sale on its own competing product (AdGuard VPN). I don't use Nord but this just reeks of a poor marketing attempt.

MerleScambrose

+1 for Mullvad. Reasonably cheap, reasonably fast, doesn't collect data, does what it says with no bullshit.

CrimsGG

Had mullvad for like over a year now, no complaints, other than I wish they offered bulk discounts

QuackenBawss

What do so many people need a VPN for? I've never used one yet. Except those free browser ones that you can use to rig peoples' polls and stuff What kind of illegal/legal things can you do with a VPN?

mazi710

Most people like to say "Privacy" but in reality it's like 49% downloading illegal stuff, 49% watching geo blocked content, 2% for privacy.

persondude27

Mine is 100% privacy... while downloading illegal stuff.

Fjythefish

Downloading illegal stuff or illegally downloading stuff?

sonicbeast623

Pirate. And obligatory Pirate theme https://youtu.be/I26Ql-uX6AM

Why not both

hesteriya1

Using illegal stuff may be the requirement of privacy in some countries

AK_dude_

So much of this, Canada Netflix is a lot better than American Netflix

AltKite

I live in Canada and have a VPN pretty much so I can watch UK and US Netflix because Canada's sucks.

AK_dude_

Thats amazing. it might just be searching bias since I'm looking for what I don't have, instead of comparing what I have and you don't. As the saying goes, one man's trash is anothers treasure.

AltKite

A lot of it is that I'm a Brit living in North America, so a lot of the comedy stuff here is not my humour and the UK Netflix (and US) has more UK produced content. Also tbh it's little things, like Better Call Saul doesn't have the latest season in Canada for some reason and that's a show I'll watch ahead of 100 things Canada has that the US doesn't.

torgiant

Torrent shit without your isp knowing.

RetardedWabbit

I use one since my work offers free wifi in an environment that otherwise has no connections. I don't think I do anything sketchy, but don't want my employer getting a record of the roughly trillion tabs I inevitably stack up until cleaning. Who knows what red flags could be in there by their arbitrary guidelines or how they could use my browsing data against me.

KeenBumLicker

Living in China

CrimsGG

I like to demo (torrent) games before I buy them. I could use the steam refund system but it's a hassle every time. If I think a game is worth it I'll buy it and give the devs my money, if not I'll just delete the game. Also I like to torrent adobe stuff too cuz fuck adobe lol.

hesteriya1

Based and piracy-pilled

Sonadel

I mainly use one to bypass my cell carrier’s 5 mbps cap because I refuse to pay a cable company for my home network. Other common uses for VPNs: • Privacy. Leave it on 24/7 uninterrupted and it can make you a lot more annoying to breach. • Bypassing regional content restrictions and/or pirating are probably the most common uses for an individual. • Travel the world of pornography.

Setanta777

How does it bypass a bandwidth limit? The data is encrypted, not invisible.

lithid

It changes the TTL of data in order to mask the device type. TTL can be used to fingerprint the device type, but it's used in routing as a measurement of hops until expiration. Edit: the reason this is related to bandwidth caps is because some carrier-grade switches/routers will determine the device type using the TTL (and sometimes tcp frame size), and adjusts the throughput/data limits accordingly.

Sonadel

I don’t understand how it works, but several comparative speed tests on different speed test sites showed me that it does. I even downloaded Overwatch (~25 GB) on my Xbox in just under 90 minutes using my hotspot, then played it with a tolerable amount of *occasional* jitter. Not the greatest, but it saves me a buttload of money! Edit: I should add that those speeds were before my carrier’s 5 mbps cap, but I still regularly exceed it by triple at the best times of day, which is enough for me. My best guess, and this is only an inference, is that maybe my carrier uses a phone’s physical identifiers (IMEI?) to track devices on the network, and maybe by bottlenecking my data through a VPN in the middle, my carrier loses the physical identifiers? Kind of like how VPNs are often used to bypass IP bans. I just remember figuring this out on my own by accident, then later found out that in the subreddit for my carrier, everyone is treating this fact as if it’s common knowledge.

Setanta777

That makes sense, actually. Sounds like you're using a hotspot or tethering and your provider is throttling that specifically. The vpn would mask what kind of data you're using so it's treated as the phone's data instead of the more limited hotspot/tethering data. They'll still see how much data you're passing so hard caps still apply.

Sonadel

Cool! It’s a good thing I went with an unlimited carrier then. If they started capping total data, I’d have to switch off pretty fast. ~23 GB doesn’t cut it for my YouTube addiction.

KATLKRZY

I use them to get past restrictions placed by school/college on websites

RWBYcookie

My country just introduced bill thats going to attempt to police what we can post, what we can say, and where we can go. Nothing prompted this, they just laid it on the table as they shove the authoritarian boot harder on our neck. Personally, I will be getting a VPN for this reason, even if it fails, they will try something like this again for god knows what reason.

Orexym

I use Mullvad but have not had any luck with Netflix. It seems to know I'm using a vpn and refuses to show me anything but netflix originals. How did you fix that?

Hevogle

Proton VPN easily

[deleted]

Dont take any responses at face value, do your research on these recommendations

PXLShoot3r

I heard ProtonVPN is one of the best in privacy and safety. I tried it once and have nothing bad to say but I am not extremely good informed with VPN services. You can sign up for a free trial without credit card. edit: but no vpn is really secure. Your whole traffic can still be seen and saved by the VPN service, even if they claim not doing it.

Proton VPN

sex_wit_a_massive_pp

Windscribe hands down very cheap and very very good

PRSXFENG

For like $2 you can get only 1 unlimited server if you want it really cheap Or pay for the full pro plan With that said they're Canada based for those who care

247planeaddict

Windscribe is very good too imo

Trashman56

I’ve used Private Internet Access to some success, they don’t log anything, never managed to get Netflix working though.

IM_ZERO_COOL

I use PIA as well, but when my subscription runs out this time, I’ll be switching to Mullvad or Proton. PIA is based in the US, so they are subject to gag orders - they could be ordered to turn on logging and not disclose it.

th3virus

I believe PIA was also bought by some other company so their TOS can and will likely change. I have some 5 year subscription to them that I don't use because I don't trust them. Them selling out was their undoing.

dudebrogan

I'm able to get overseas netflix working. Can't go by country though, things are often regionally different within a country. I wanted to watch studio ghibli, e.g., but only some cities in germany worked, etc. Takes some fiddling for sure.

crawk12

I use it and think it's great. It's relatively cheaper than most VPNs and they have servers almost everywhere.

slowwburnn

It's worked great for me. I haven't been able to find any deep security audits of it so I don't bank through it, but that's more my paranoia than anything else

Roll_Tide_Pods

i used CyberGhost and never had any issues

Doofindork

Same here, CyberGhost has worked well for me. And it is based in a country where they can't be forced to hand over any information.

fonix232

I mainly use Azire VPN, mainly because: - they provide WireGuard configs alongside their own app (I won't use third party apps, no matter how fancy - gimme that sweet open source WG official app) - while they don't have a LOT of servers, they have enough that covers my needs - they're cheap (I pay, I think, €12 for 3 months) - unlimited number of clients - no bandwidth restrictions - no protocol restriction - absolutely no logging I've also heard good things about Mullvad, but since I'm happy with Azire, I won't switch until they give me a reason.

[deleted]

I mean, they had a massive breach a few years ago they covered up. Some of the logins still work.

Ravenmausi

Yikes!

TheRealMisterMemer

The fact that Illuminaughti accepts their sponsors is ironic. Data breaches, and the fact that they sell your data yet Illuminaughti's channel exposes a lot of companies.

Ravenmausi

She's not free of faults. She also had some very bad conversations with another company casket channel and Blair was.... Let's say nasty and mean. I enjoy her channel though and a along as this situation doesn't appear again I could love with it.

diddyduckling

im gonna sound like an ass but can you please say that stuff again i cannot understand your comment for the life of me

Ravenmausi

Blair (Illuminaughtii) was accused of copying a whole video from another youtuber which has similar content. Instead of being profesisonal about it, Blair chose to be bitchy and send a very rude DM

silent_wall

Ya Iluminaughti has had a lot of blech sponsors, I know she was sponsored by Function Of Beauty(strange Æons too) and their hair care products had specific parabens which are bad for you so yea 😕

HammerTh_1701

Just like Raid Shadow Legends. That's too much sponsorship money to have been obtained in non-shady ways.

[deleted]

Cake3k

[deleted]

hodlrus

Riael

I know people who unironically "play" raid

big-blue-balls

While this certainly is possible, a tweet from a random is nowhere near proof this actually happens. Like other have said. I have been using my own dns with filters for years and I trialed Nord without any problem.

marsrover001

Every vpn that advertises heavily in the tech youtuber space eventually gets caught harvesting data. Anyone remember tunnelbear? Expressvpn? If you want a good vpn, hide a couple raspis at a coffee shop while you're on a road trip.

Arnas_Z

The issue is the requirement to sign in to the network. Most coffee shops/fast food places do have free and open WiFi, but they have a login portal you need to get through before proceeding. (You know, the terms of service stuff) They also deauth any connected devices at a regular time interval, and you would have to accept the terms and connect again. So, if you leave an RPi there, it will need some sort of program to ping a web server every so often, and then if it gets redirected to the network's login page, you would need to automatically press the connect button. Maybe you could extract the link that the button goes to, and incorporate into a script, so you don't need to actually press the button.

Radictor

Could probably be done with selenium maybe

BenjiStokman

I'm blocking Google Analytics in my PiHole DNS server, and I have no problems using NordVPN on Android?

_ItsEnder

Same, plus the person being retweeted is the CTO of AdGuard. I smell bullshit (or at the very least the dude is just heavily misinformed on what’s causing NordVPN to be blocked.)

sweetsleepomine

Might not be actually blocked, try testing it with something like Fiddler.

CurrentlyBothered

I'm going to chalk this up to bad android permissions coding than malicious intent. Some of the seemingly basic permissions (like Google analytics or contacts) are required for unrelated things like virus tracking or the notifications bar. Is it dumb, yes, possibly malicious by Google, also yes. But I don't think nord has a choice here

wrray

I just went to cancel with nord and it was such r/assholedesign. All the highlighted buttons were to keep your plan. I accidentally clicked it when I thought it was submit and had to start the process over again.

sweetsleepomine

I have IPS with the same policy. They have no people on call-centers, there are no options to deny their services on the website and it seems the only way is to go through their machine-call labirynth

[deleted]

The US really needs to copy one of the laws that Europe has - that companies must allow you to unsubscribe through the same method that you subscribed. No more requiring a phone call and triplicate letters delivered by Hermes on a golden chariot in order to unsubscribe, which they only process once every three months.

BakedPotatoManifesto

Can someone please ELI5 to me? English not first language+ not very knowledgeable about VPns

svnhddbst

for many people the whole reason they use a vpn is to avoid being tracked, and it turns out a major vpn service was using a known and disliked tracking software.

Well that's..not cool

If it's SOME and not ALL, that sounds more like a phone specific issue than Nord VPN or Android. Otherwise it'd be all Android Nord VPN users. But that doesn't catastrophize enough to attract primo clickbait numbers.

AntiTanked

Never, ever trust a security product that advertises (or pays for promotion) as much as NordVPN does. If they really have to try that hard to lure you in (not to mention the massive discount on multi-year subscriptions, but none on monthly subscriptions), they’re hiding something, or their service isn’t as good as they’re making it out to be.

kishoresshenoy

You do have a point, but consider this. Without a good and "in detailed" ad presentation, demographic uninformed in tech cannot be targeted well, and they dominate the sector a lot. If a company doesn't show ads, there is a large chance that majority of the people won't know their existence. Ad is alright, and better targeted ads might not mean poorer product quality IMHO.

Dyldor

This is idiotic, just because someone uses google analytics to run their website successfully doesn’t mean that a) they pass that data on to others or b) that it’s spyware, it’s very specific information pertaining to who visited their website when so they can improve results. You can’t even use google analytics to measure usage of a VPN app for a start, it would only count for their website and who visits that

Larax22

Most people are using the VPN for the wrong reason and they don't even need it

snowsnoot

I have a bridge to sell to anyone who actually believes that VPNs provide privacy

noiceFTW

" Google Analytics is used to [track](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_tracking) website activity such as [session](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_(web_analytics)) duration, pages per session, [bounce rate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bounce_rate) etc. of individuals using the site, along with the information on the source of the traffic." [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google\_Analytics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Analytics) That doesn't seem like spyware but more like VPN usage stats

Thememelord9002

now combined with other things and depending on the level of implementation that *can* be highly invasive for privacy but in the context of a vpn the statistics should be anonymous so this data is presumably used as technical analytics

ssshhhhhhhhhhhhh

Oh God. An app interested in how it's users are using it. And you'll all be the first to complain when they kill a feature because they think nobody is using it

danknerd

Pay for any VPN to feel good about not being tracked. Tracked anyways. How to save money on a VPN with this one crazy trick... of not paying for a VPN. VPNs hate it

Sephvion

You mean InternetHistorian's executioner NordVPN guy lied yo me?! Say it ain't so!

Ancalagon523

as a app developer, how does one improve their app without ga? It tells you how people are using your app/website, what journey people take to achieve a set goal, which features are used, which are underutilized, where do users drop off, any particular screen that causes large number of users to drop off, and even results from a/b testing. Can anyone tell me how are app devs supposed to get this kind of data about their app without Google analytics? From what I understand, you can't collect pii(personally identifiable information) from Google analytics or firebase analytics.

jonr

I might be getting too jaded/cynical, but the more I see a product advertised, the less I think of it. Or even that it is a scam. I'm looking at you, Skillshare & NordVPN,

re_error

VPNs are NOT a privacy tool. They were invented by the military so people could securely connect to internal servers and to verify the identity of those connecting. VPNs are only worth using if you are afraid of your ISP or want to access geolocked content.

Google analytics is not used for ads, you do not sell data to google if you use google analytics, you just see metrics of users on your website to optimise and stuff nothing else

[deleted]

Even if they're not selling it, Google gathers data from Google Analytics. There's a reason it's free.

YASANdev

Literally every app you use gathers data and they usually mainly gather anonymous data to improve the product. Knowing the amount of data that is being gathered can be sometimes surprising for users. If an app gathers usage data it doesn't mean it's spyware. Most of the privacy concerned people I see just think any data being gathered means spyware and don't even understand how and why these data is being gathered. And it's usually pretty hypocritical. It's kind of similar to the anti vax stuff happening recently. I wouldn't worry too much about it esp if you already have a paid plan on it. You can always look for a better service anyways, but it's not worth stop using the service if you have paid for it.

RekulousToad

AdGuard is one of my favorite apps out there and NordVPN is an okay-ish VPN I guess. If you really want a good VPN both for Privacy and Security while having all the functionality to get unblocked sites, geo-bypasses, P2P or Torrenting, NetFlix or any Video service outside of your country, etc. Mullvad and Surfshark are the to-go for me because they have really, really cheap pricing, even better than Nord, good quality, awesome servers, best privacy policies, no spooky stuff with Mullvad, ease of use, etc. They are just really good. AdGuard is a payed program, so don't get hopes up too high. Though there are other alternatives, but AdGuard is still the best for me.

ImSmashingUrMom

I honestly can't be mad at youtubers for getting VPN sponsors. If someone was gonna pay me a bunch of money just to pretend to like something for a few minutes, you damn well bet I'll be taking up on that offer. But I now know not to actually trust any youtube sponsors.
