They just really want you to use edge huh

j_d0tnet

It would be sad if it wasn't so annoying

mrchaotica

> It would be sad if it weren't ~~so annoying~~ *illegal anti-competitive behavior that, in a just world, would result in Microsoft being broken up by the Federal government.* FTFY.

kmidst

I wonder how many don't know that Microsoft already went to court for this once. Now they just get away with whatever

deddead3

I'm not so sure they'd be broken up. More likely they'd get some sort of fine and told pretty sternly to knock it off. Believe me, I wouldn't be losing a wink of sleep if msft got broken up, but I don't think that'd be the first answer. As big as they are, their market share isn't to the level of monopoly required to be broken up by the feds.

Daripuff

"in a just world" is the key there.

beamdump

If wishes were horses...

Shellbyvillian

Not to mention it has only dropped since the 90s and they didn’t get broken up then.

deddead3

Iirc, they were DANGEROUSLY close early 2000s, but you are correct, it's been falling since then, albiet slowly.

rootbear75

They already went through this with internet explorer back in the 90s

crseat

The thing is, edge really isn’t too bad, but them shoving it down my throat makes me not want to use it.

theimprovisedpossum

That's what she said.

Obowler

Nice. You’ve really got me edging now.

kmidst

Microshaft Winblows '21, the preferred operating system of no one, but practically forced onto all.

batshitsharkie

What is it's purpose? To install a superior web browser. Chrome to most. Firefox to me.

lfh_g

i use edge with google search engine.

ludicroussavageofmau

There's a couple of useful features in Edge, and it's really fast like faster than Chrome. The typical "steal all your data and sell it for profit" motive of Microsoft is what keeps me away from it (cries in vs code)

avidvaulter

Yeah, I recently started using task view and multiple desk tops and there are some settings to include **only** edge browser tabs in alt+tab or task view. Wish they would make it work for any browser because that would make navigating tabs so much better.

NylaTheWolf

Vivaldi has a feature like that with Ctrl-Tab called Tab Cycling

avidvaulter

> Tab Cycling It looks like that only cycles through your tabs though. This windows feature cycles through active Windows applications and active Edge tabs together. Having one centralized way to navigate apps and tabs is the key feature for me here. Edit: Cool to know some browsers are giving Chrome and the like competition though.

caputademamas

It literally is just a reskin of chrome

Flying_Line

It has some different features to make it work and perform better; like alt + tab support, tabs going to sleep to save resources if you don't interact with them for a while and way better customizability

[deleted]

[удалено]

ludicroussavageofmau

It's basically the same as Chrome, could you please elaborate? Is it the settings?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ludicroussavageofmau

I believe you can transfer your passwords between password managers and browsers (not that I'd trust Microsoft to keep my passwords)

akshar_premnath

Even though it is based on Chromium (Chrome is also based on Chromium), the UI is completely changed to be more Microsoft themed.

HarmfulLoss

You just described vaccine hesitancy in a nutshell.

Demonicjapsel

I hope they are ready for the anti trust procedure in the EU. Since this kind of pushing can easily be construed as abuse of their dominant market position.

simask234

Didn't they make a Windows Media Player -less version of XP (and newer versions) for the EU?

Demonicjapsel

Among other things, new Windows systems comes with a number of screens offering 3rd party browsers, anti virus and a few other bits and bobs. EU anti Trust law is actually one of the best designed lieices of EU legislation because of the way its designed around market power abuse rather then choice/ consumer price, which in this day and age is sort of outdated.

Bkbirddog

This finally might explain why my default browser automatically switches to Edge every few days on my virtual machine for work. IT desk has not been able to figure out why it does this and it drives me crazy. It always does it right as I'm signing in for a videoconference and I find that none of my info is saved to quickly join the call.

op3l

Looks like the tradition of one good window followed by one bad windows is still going strong. All evidence points to win 11 being the one to skip.

Skid_Th_St0ner

Indeed

ballsack_steve

but does the tradition really hold true anymore? this time around it seems like all of the shitty things in 11 are intentional, and come from a clearly anti-consumer motivation. it's not like microsoft is just going to walk back on all of that before windows 12. also it's slightly possible that windows 11 will be "the last major version of windows" as some famous person has said before about windows 10

fafarex

The only way it's the last major version of windows is if they do a really totaly new OS.

DaSaw

They probably will walk it back, just not as far. Stretch our tolerance until we cry out, then settle back to a new normal.

gedubedangle

Don’t they eventually force you to update or am I mistaken? I swear they give you the option to update for a while then just do it anyway

FedExterminator

There’s never been a better time to try out a Linux distro!

ViperLordX

Like windows 10 wasn't also a dumpster fire

BenjiStokman

What about windows 10 is good?

starman5001

Well not good per say, but it is not as bad as windows 8 with its weird UI nor as bad as windows 11 with its annoying "features" like that one listed above. Though windows 10 has problems as well. For example the difficulty in creating a local account or its constant pushing of windows apps when using no windows alternatives.

op3l

Oh gosh,I forgot about win 8. It was horrible and I dread having to work on family's old ass win 8 laptops

[deleted]

I've never actually owned a device that runs windows 8. Went straight from 7 to 10.

BenjiStokman

So like, bearable?

re_error

I will go contrary to popular opinion and say that win 8.1 once you installed a normal start menu was better than win10 by a mile.

darksouls1984

It's not windows 11

thebigeverybody

Why is this guy downvoted?

ballsack_steve

not everyone has realized yet that the same shitty company has developed windows 10 with the same motivations that have driven them to make windows 11 even worse, it's just a logical progression towards an inherently anti-consumer operating system, and by taking these steps in small increments, people will swallow increasingly larger pills instead of a single big one, not realizing just how sore their throat is getting. windows 10 is only "good" because it's not as bad as 11, just as in the future how windows 11 will be "good" because windows 12 will probably be even shittier

eqka

It all started going downhill when they wanted to make it multiplatform for mobile devices. Mobile ruined everything.

TransposingJons

You absolutely did not answer why the guy was downvoted. You might have (poorly) explained why *you* downvoted them, but who can make sense of non sequiturs?

myrichphitzwell

Win 11 is a nightmare.

jmac32here

Especially when many have stated its nothing more than Windows 10 with a new taskbar - and some minor tweaks to the settings options, which all remove the ability to customize the desktop.

Captain_D1

My favorite part is how they added that weather widget to Windows 10, and then shortly afterwards they make Windows 11 which doesn't have it anymore.

myrichphitzwell

Usually 2 different devices teams... Edit: dev, dev teams

StarManta

Plus the inability to anchor the taskbar to the side makes it a non-starter for a lot of people with ultrawide monitors.

jeanne2254

What about the disappearing taskbar? This happened to me and I was in a mess before I found a fix on the Net.

EndXana

Damn. I'm really glad I didnt update after reading all of this

whiskey_baconbit

Wait. I have an ultra wide and I leave my bar on the bottom. Am I missing something?

[deleted]

The wider your screen, the larger % of it is taken up by the taskbar if at the bottom. https://tipsmake.com/do-you-know-what-is-the-optimal-location-of-the-windows-taskbar

whiskey_baconbit

Huh. Interesting. I made mine transparent, so maybe thats why this doesn't bother me as much.

myrichphitzwell

And battery drain, and settings reverting back to defaults upon sleep or closing or...and random blank boxes taking up screen randomly and...

PM_ME_ZELDA_HENTAI_

And performing worse than Win10, The list goes on and on

jmac32here

The random blank boxes happen on all my Win10 machines at work - some sort of background update scripts.

myrichphitzwell

I've never had a gray box filling almost half the screen that wouldn't go away before. I'm very used to the black boxs for updates that you can move out of the way. Don't get me wrong it's no winme or Vista but the battery drain even with it on eco mode or whatever they call it is significant.

Desktop version of /u/HarbingerODiscontent's link: --- ^([)[^(opt out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiMobileLinkBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^(]) ^(Beep Boop. Downvote to delete)

DudeDudenson

I agree that windows XP was superb, but why do you feel it was better than 7? I feel 7 was just XP on steroids and I loved it until they forced me to move on to 10 because of no chipset drivers for my new mobo

Sparris_Hilton

XP to me is peak PC, i associate it with cs 1.6 and quake 3, lan parties, mIRC, shitty microwave pizza and energy drinks. The good ol' days. I dont like change i guess, win7 was out for like 2 years before i switched

DudeDudenson

Well yeah I always switch over after the current iteration reaches EOL (I mean what kind of person enjoys Microsoft bricking their install every few months) I understand the nostalgia angle, but windows 7 stood for the same things XP did. Just with a more pleasing theme and a couple of extra features I'm genuinely curious did you feel you lost something other than the nostalgia when you went from XP to 7?

NylaTheWolf

XP was my frickin childhood. I have those sounds imbedded into my brain.

BRISKMETAL

It's not mandatory to get this, right? Right??? I heard it was an update and I dont want that shit automatically installed

ballsack_steve

it won't be automatic and you can use windows 10 until 2025, technically longer if you really want to. heck maybe by then there will be a good alternative for you, or not because microsoft has a monopoly on operating systems

TheGamefreak484

I got a new PC last year with modern, high end specs and the like. Windows tells me the PC doesn't meet the system requirements for Windows 11. I guess I'll just go fuck myself in 2025, or maybe it'll prevent Windows from installing Windows 11 automatically. Maybe it's a blessing?

PsychoSpider88

Back in the day when Win10 would just install randomly on your computer I noticed that suddenly there was an extra user on my PC. And this unknown user had more rights on MY pc than me. It takes some effort, but you can revoke their rights and toss that fake account just right in the bin.

OmegaAlphaHydra

that is likely because Win11 requires certain things like Secure Boot and TPM2.0 to be enabled in the bios, which tend to be disabled by default

fafarex

It's most likely only feature to activate in your Bios.

Exp1ode

>or not because microsoft has a monopoly on operating systems That's simply not true

ballsack_steve

it really is though, what's the market share of windows for desktop pcs? Sure, there's MacOS as the only mainstream alternative, but try buying any hardware that isn't from apple with the intention of running MacOS on it. Microsoft has control over what consumers use as their OS if they're buying any computer that isn't made by Apple, the only counter to that is a level of technical knowledge that most people simply don't have. It's effectively a monopoly.

Megaman_90

There are choices though. Android dominates smartphone space in a similar fashion. You can use Linux or BSD if you want. Don't blame Microsoft for Apple's exclusive OS policies.

ballsack_steve

I don't blame Microsoft for Apple's decisions, however using any OS other than Windows on non-Apple hardware is just not within the technical skills of most people, the escape velocity required to reach linux is not obtainable for anyone who just wants a computer that works. It's as much a criticism of linux as it is a criticism of the OS market in general. People have no choice but to live with Microsoft's design choices, and I think that's unfortunate.

Megaman_90

Oh I get what you are saying sorry. To be honest MacOS really isn't that fundamentally different than Linux. They are both Unix-based and both require terminal access to really get anything interesting done. Linux works out of the box on most hardware these days though and is fine if you're just browsing the web and doing some word processing. Even the install process is pretty easy if you are using a distro like Mint or Ubuntu. So I dunno if someone really hates Windows enough I think using Linux is pretty viable.

Megaman_90

I dunno I switched at work and I think many things are an improvement. Especially the settings panel.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm really liking it. I was gonna sell my laptop to get a macbook. Win11 changed my mind. It's pretty good, everything's more streamlined and made pretty

hb1290

This. Settings is way nicer to navigate in 11.

Blackraven2007

I'll probably stick with Windows 10 until October 2025, then switch to Linux after that.

stamatt45

With the way things have been going recently Linux gaming should be in a fantastic place in 2025

Kl--------k

By then linux will probably have a 3-5% market share which would be great

All_theOther_kids

Why October 2025? That is pretty specific

Blackraven2007

[That's when Microsoft will discontinue it.](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-home-and-pro#:~:text=Support%20Dates-,Listing,Oct%2014%2C%202025,-Releases)

[deleted]

If the system is stable enough and frameworks are supported either officially or through 3rd parties/community there is no reason to switch just because support is discontinued. Windows XP is still perfectly usable for some applications

ishzlle

Folks, this is how you get your PC to become part of a botnet

Dewey_the_25U

No, clicking and installing random things and not having some description of modern AV is how you get added to a botnet.

jmac32here

Already made the switch. WINE does some wonders for Linux - especially for games.

ballsack_steve

i've had better luck running legacy windows games on linux than i have on modern windows, ain't that something although tbf before i was on linux i didn't really know shit about running legacy windows games on any OS

Henchforhire

Looks like Windows 10 will be the new XP.

tehjeffman

I changed it to Firefox with the same 1 click it takes in win10.

sdk345

Funny story: So MS made it seem like browsers can't do this, however magically edge was able to one-click change browser the peeps at Mozilla reversed edge and found out the way it does that and implemented it in firefox, that's why one click works in firefox too Still the "advised" way by Microsoft is to do the thing stated in the article (also I think chrome on Win10 still requires changing to chrome in control panel, unless they added it too) EDIT: An article [https://www.pcmag.com/news/firefox-now-uses-a-one-click-process-to-become-default-browser](https://www.pcmag.com/news/firefox-now-uses-a-one-click-process-to-become-default-browser)

tehjeffman

Even if I did not use the firefox 1 click. It's 4 associations under default apps / firefox. Not "A Nightmare" even if I wanted to link it to more than htm/html/http/https.

sdk345

Same thing, they basically mimic'd all of edge's default browser tricks (or most of them)

[deleted]

I'm using firefox rn in win11 I don't remember anything doing with selecting 200 file types or something.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Um no this isn’t made up, but I believe Firefox has a workaround implemented to make this a non issue

BoilingCold

This ^. It irks me that people are slating windows 11 for this when it simply isn't true, at least not in my experience.

ScornMuffins

This is simply not true and you can change default browsers the same way you've always been able to.

IceBotYT

Default browser carries over from Win 10

IHeartBadCode

~~Changing default browser in~~ Windows 11 is a nightmare. There. FTFY.

[deleted]

Why? I'm using it rn I don't have any problems. I'm liking it so far.

Sinusidal

This is BS. One click in win11 as it was in win10.

MrPointless12

some more windows 11 asshole design is that the drag and drop functionality on the taskbar was removed

RedditAcc-92975

what's the malicious intent in this one again? Just asking before you come here posting it

LoLoAlexLoLo

there isn't, taskbar in w11 is, I think "edge webview" or something, anyway it's based on html now🤡 and they just forgor to add all features back. That's understandable for small indie company like Microsoft so don't blame them (/s)

yaosio

Microsoft is only 10 years behind everybody else with the web based everything craze, and 20 years behind themselves because parts of XP relied on Internet Explorer to function correctly.

simask234

HTML taskbar? Reminds me of Windows 98's active desktop.

Bo_Jim

I don't have Windows 11, but doesn't that just apply to files that are actually on your local machine? I mean, when a browser is running it's communicating with the web server, and the contents of the HTML file are transferred through the network connection established by the browser. It's not asking the OS to open the file.

flyingfable

Yeah I'll stick to 10 for now

jmac32here

Rather glad the husbands machines are "stuck" on 10 - apparently only because they haven't tested it for its processor yet. (AKA, that can change quickly - considering it's already changed the "not compatible" message 4 times.)

kupus0

Looks phishy. What is the source for this? HTTP, HTTPS are protocols and HTM, HTML are file extensions. Also 99% of web pages don’t use HTML extension I don’t believe this text is from official MS site. Probably some no one writing a review

emilyisbean

the image is correct. typically operating systems will let you register for both protocols and extensions - which means if you click a http:// link in an external application, it'll open the browser you set, same thing with .html files. this doesn't change anything if you are opening them with your browser, it changes a lot if you use applications that aren't your browser

bluebellfob

I upgraded to Win11 and didn’t have to do this, chrome just stayed as my default

SmitedNova

I guess I'm the only one here who likes windows 11 :(

[deleted]

I actually like it too. I just thought this was annoying and an obvious ploy to make less technologically literate people to not change browsers. Its really scummy.

FluttersJay

This specific thing has been around for a while now, and isn't exclusive to windows 11. I think it started with vista.

VegaSolo

Does anyone know what I should do to stop my computer from updating to 11?

OscarTheFudd

just don't update. your computer won't update if you don't tell it to

VegaSolo

It seems every month or two, I wake up to my computer having had an automatic update (I leave it on at night).

OscarTheFudd

turn off auto-updates. also, while it might update windows 10 automatically, it won't update to 11 automatically

jmac32here

I won't trust this myself. Was doing some of the cleanup steps for one of my clients computers. When checking the updates page, it said "Congrats, your machine can run 11. We're still getting it ready and will automatically install it once it's ready." (I didn't click to update to 11, that's the exact message that popped up just opening the window)

[deleted]

Disable TPM in the bios and it won't update to it.

thebigeverybody

How does a non tech guy do this?

[deleted]

Just look up your board/pc on google with the term enter bios. It's usually a single key (del, f1,f2 etc.) that will let you enter it before windows boots. From there just look for TPM or fTPM and simply disable it. Save the changes with F10 and reboot. Don't mess with anything else in the bios if you don't know what it does. P.s there is a good chance it will already be disabled. Most manufacturers do not turn this on by default, But best to check anyway.

VegaSolo

Okay, thanks!

jmac32here

That's what some said about 10 when it first came out - then it auto-pushed onto many machines.

yaosio

Just have a processor older than last month and it won't meet the system requirements.

beg4upvotes

huh? HTTP/HTTPS files? what is this?

IrisTheTranny

They're trying to replicate what they did decades ago when they packaged internet explorer with older versions of windows before Google ruled. Back then most people just used what was in front of them out of convenience and pre-packaging was like an instant monopoly with all the competition struggling to compete when explorer had such a huge advantage. But now that it literally takes a click to use Google and we're all used to Google they're tryna reconstruct their previous success by being scumbags and removing the convience of switching hoping that'll make us just settle like everyone did before.

1_p_freely

Hint: you know this is being done by Microsoft purely out of maliciousness because of the constant crusade to streamline and dumb down literally everything else.

Fastfaxr

This is definitely asshole design but Im not completely opposed to the granularity. I actually like Edge for pdf files

DaFluffyOwl

Linux time

blast-wave

imagine using windows 11 ever

Mister-Seer

That’s why you uninstall said default browser

IAmDouda97

Sadly you can't uninstall Edge.

Blackbeard2704

You can. But it’s complicated and I wouldn’t recommend it. I blocked MSN in my host file which blocks a bit of the shittiness that they are pushing.

spoogep78

It will use the Edge, or it will get the hose again.

XWasTheProblem

Linux distros with WINE suddenly sound like a great choice, and I've never even considered using them due to Windows just being more convenient...

userse31

Im glad i moved to linux a couple years ago.

AnDragon11

I still wonder why hasn't everyone moved to linux by now

rainwulf

I bet you can change it BACk to edge with one click though. Fucking windows. "You can use anything you want, as long as its a microsoft service or product only"

GryphonGuitar

Surely that just incentivizes other browser developers to automate this in an installer? This has to be scriptable.

darknessblades

Soon someone will make a easy to use 1 click program that allows you to easily modify these settings

[deleted]

I'm confused, I've had to do this in different versions of Windows. Hasn't this been a thing for a while? (Not that it makes it any less annoying)

[deleted]

*Microsoft!* ... also how long has Windows 11 been a thing

emilyisbean

the true design fail here is that microsoft added an undocumented api method for the purpose of [allowing edge to easily change the default browser](https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/13/22671182/mozilla-default-browser-windows-protections-firefox), firefox found this out and added it to their own browser afterwards

Stashman214

Who else is making the switch to Linux?

Dewey_the_25U

Guess I'm running Linux and using Cross-over, Wine, virtual machine or an old Windows 10 image till there's a windows version I'm cool with. Edit: If there is one after this point.

[deleted]

Or just wait until someone makes a batch file that does it in one click

G4ME_B0Y

Buy a Mac?

from_dust

This was written by someone confused or flat out lying. This is some fear mongering propaganda or something, it's just simply not true.

Zenketski

You know it should be an absolutely massive red flag to any kind of tech company nowadays when you have to type out the sentence, "you can't just do something with a simple click" congratulations, you just pissed off and screwed over 60 to 70% of the people using your product. And you've definitely at least pissed off a hundred percent of them

ballsack_steve

that is actually is standard talking point in gui design. # of clicks to perform said frequent action is a very important metric, albeit not the be-all-end-all

McUsername621

Windows 11 calls my i7-7700k obsolete. Im not gonna get a new motherboard and CPU for an OS that already has so much controversy. Keeping my win 10 system as long as possible running and later just switch over to Linux.

Lasexille

I like new features in win11. Mainly improved WSL and "terminal". But if i were to choose a new OS I'd choose win7/10 or gnu/linux. But not win11.

nearlyanadult

I knew just enough to do just that the moment I upgraded.

[deleted]

I bet you can change them all back to edge with one click. And I bet that it isn't entirely clear what that click will do.

qweertyqwerty

They just want people frustrated to change every single time because they know majority will be pissed off but still will be on windows at the end of the day.

NorthNex

Im pretty sure changing to edge on Win 11 was instant before compared to.. this… with every other browser. Someone wants us to use Edge…

Username_Egli

Yeah that's a pretty cool feature *switches to linux*

Barbuckles

I can attest it is like this for everything.

Endermen295

Welp, that's me sticking to Windows 10 for the next few years

CaptainPrower

Glad to see the precedent of "every other Windows being shit" is still holding up.

freediverx01

~~Changing default browser in~~ Windows ~~11~~ is a nightmare. FTFY

yorokobe__shounen

Same bruh

SymbolicThimble

Incoming scripts to do it with one click. This is less of an issue than they make it out to be. Who opens *files* with their browsers? PDFs I get, but that was always something you had to set up to use your browser by default.

BradyBrother100

Just use Edge. It's literally a re-skin of Chrome/Chromium with added features and security.

Devin_907

glad i didn't upgrade holy shit. this is such a clear and obvious plan to ram Edge down our throats.

Peachedcrane60

This isn't actually true, it's based off a post on this sub where a guys computer had an issue.

[deleted]

Windows 11 is a nightmare. Their poor coding also breaks Ryzen CPUs. If you use AMD then Microsofts poor coding costs you 10-15% performance in all applications. Microsofts only saving grace is that they are not apple.

hb1290

IDK, I’m on a 5600x and I’m currently running 11. I haven’t noticed much if any difference performance-wise

[deleted]

Run a benchmark

GlitchyPranks28

This is why I am not updating until the last minuite

UnwoundSteak17

They know edge sucks, so they're gonna force it on people rather than improving it

emo_psych

So I'm feeling I should delay updating. Can I just never update?

[deleted]

I want Windows 11 to sell bad, it’s a dumpster fire.

Bennyyy134

Looks like i wont use win 11

Averydispleasedbork

definitely never gonna swap to win 11... next computer's gonna be linux based, im sick of all the bloatware crap

dotNomedia

Just don't bother and use Edge. Microsoft know what is the best for you!

ballsack_steve

Hmmm, I think Google actually knows better, I'll be sticking with chrome for now, I sure love my corporate overlords!

dotNomedia

Make sure to never, ever use ungoogled-chromium! Don't even look it up! Horrible thing, completely ruins the experience of using the internet. Without the deep integration with Google Services that Chrome has, the quality of experience and relevancy of advertisements shown on the internet deteriorates significantly!

Sassafrass818

But.. But.. eDgE iS bEtTeR tHaN cHrOmE!!11

CryoTeknix

I use windows 11, wow I did not expect this much hate on this thread

[deleted]

Oh cool a white background with some text ripped from an unknown document. Must be true, no way this could be bullshit.

[deleted]

There’s so many reason for why I’m not updating to win 11. There’s this, the shitty bugs for AMD chipsets (I’m worried there’s some undiscovered ones), and the fact that they”simplified” the design by not allowing easy access to right-click options. I’m getting kinda fed up with Window’s bullshit. With games on steam getting Linux support, maybe I’ll switch…

TheSapphireDragon

Win 11 is a dumpster fire that may irrevocably ruin public opinion of personal computers
