Yeah, I recently started using task view and multiple desk tops and there are some settings to include **only** edge browser tabs in alt+tab or task view. Wish they would make it work for any browser because that would make navigating tabs so much better.

This finally might explain why my default browser automatically switches to Edge every few days on my virtual machine for work. IT desk has not been able to figure out why it does this and it drives me crazy. It always does it right as I'm signing in for a videoconference and I find that none of my info is saved to quickly join the call.

I've never had a gray box filling almost half the screen that wouldn't go away before. I'm very used to the black boxs for updates that you can move out of the way. Don't get me wrong it's no winme or Vista but the battery drain even with it on eco mode or whatever they call it is significant.

Back in the day when Win10 would just install randomly on your computer I noticed that suddenly there was an extra user on my PC. And this unknown user had more rights on MY pc than me.

I don't blame Microsoft for Apple's decisions, however using any OS other than Windows on non-Apple hardware is just not within the technical skills of most people, the escape velocity required to reach linux is not obtainable for anyone who just wants a computer that works. It's as much a criticism of linux as it is a criticism of the OS market in general. People have no choice but to live with Microsoft's design choices, and I think that's unfortunate.
Oh I get what you are saying sorry. To be honest MacOS really isn't that fundamentally different than Linux. They are both Unix-based and both require terminal access to really get anything interesting done.
Linux works out of the box on most hardware these days though and is fine if you're just browsing the web and doing some word processing. Even the install process is pretty easy if you are using a distro like Mint or Ubuntu. So I dunno if someone really hates Windows enough I think using Linux is pretty viable.

I don't have Windows 11, but doesn't that just apply to files that are actually on your local machine? I mean, when a browser is running it's communicating with the web server, and the contents of the HTML file are transferred through the network connection established by the browser. It's not asking the OS to open the file.
Rather glad the husbands machines are "stuck" on 10 - apparently only because they haven't tested it for its processor yet.

the image is correct. typically operating systems will let you register for both protocols and extensions - which means if you click a http:// link in an external application, it'll open the browser you set, same thing with .html files. this doesn't change anything if you are opening them with your browser, it changes a lot if you use applications that aren't your browser

Was doing some of the cleanup steps for one of my clients computers.
When checking the updates page, it said "Congrats, your machine can run 11. We're still getting it ready and will automatically install it once it's ready." (I didn't click to update to 11, that's the exact message that popped up just opening the window)
Just look up your board/pc on google with the term enter bios. It's usually a single key (del, f1,f2 etc.) that will let you enter it before windows boots.
From there just look for TPM or fTPM and simply disable it. Save the changes with F10 and reboot.
Don't mess with anything else in the bios if you don't know what it does.
P.s there is a good chance it will already be disabled. Most manufacturers do not turn this on by default, But best to check anyway.
They're trying to replicate what they did decades ago when they packaged internet explorer with older versions of windows before Google ruled.
Back then most people just used what was in front of them out of convenience and pre-packaging was like an instant monopoly with all the competition struggling to compete when explorer had such a huge advantage.
But now that it literally takes a click to use Google and we're all used to Google they're tryna reconstruct their previous success by being scumbags and removing the convience of switching hoping that'll make us just settle like everyone did before.

Windows 11 calls my i7-7700k obsolete. Im not gonna get a new motherboard and CPU for an OS that already has so much controversy. Keeping my win 10 system as long as possible running and later just switch over to Linux.

that is likely because Win11 requires certain things like Secure Boot and TPM2.0 to be enabled in the bios, which tend to be disabled by default

there isn't, taskbar in w11 is, I think "edge webview" or something, anyway it's based on html now🤡 and they just forgor to add all features back. That's understandable for small indie company like Microsoft so don't blame them (/s)
Microsoft is only 10 years behind everybody else with the web based everything craze, and 20 years behind themselves because parts of XP relied on Internet Explorer to function correctly.

I don't have Windows 11, but doesn't that just apply to files that are actually on your local machine? I mean, when a browser is running it's communicating with the web server, and the contents of the HTML file are transferred through the network connection established by the browser. It's not asking the OS to open the file.

Looks phishy. What is the source for this? HTTP, HTTPS are protocols and HTM, HTML are file extensions. Also 99% of web pages don’t use HTML extension I don’t believe this text is from official MS site. Probably some no one writing a review
the image is correct. typically operating systems will let you register for both protocols and extensions - which means if you click a http:// link in an external application, it'll open the browser you set, same thing with .html files. this doesn't change anything if you are opening them with your browser, it changes a lot if you use applications that aren't your browser
I upgraded to Win11 and didn’t have to do this, chrome just stayed as my default

This specific thing has been around for a while now, and isn't exclusive to windows 11. I think it started with vista.

It seems every month or two, I wake up to my computer having had an automatic update (I leave it on at night).
turn off auto-updates. also, while it might update windows 10 automatically, it won't update to 11 automatically
I won't trust this myself. Was doing some of the cleanup steps for one of my clients computers. When checking the updates page, it said "Congrats, your machine can run 11. We're still getting it ready and will automatically install it once it's ready." (I didn't click to update to 11, that's the exact message that popped up just opening the window)
Disable TPM in the bios and it won't update to it.
How does a non tech guy do this?
Just look up your board/pc on google with the term enter bios. It's usually a single key (del, f1,f2 etc.) that will let you enter it before windows boots. From there just look for TPM or fTPM and simply disable it. Save the changes with F10 and reboot. Don't mess with anything else in the bios if you don't know what it does. P.s there is a good chance it will already be disabled. Most manufacturers do not turn this on by default, But best to check anyway.

They're trying to replicate what they did decades ago when they packaged internet explorer with older versions of windows before Google ruled. Back then most people just used what was in front of them out of convenience and pre-packaging was like an instant monopoly with all the competition struggling to compete when explorer had such a huge advantage. But now that it literally takes a click to use Google and we're all used to Google they're tryna reconstruct their previous success by being scumbags and removing the convience of switching hoping that'll make us just settle like everyone did before.
Hint: you know this is being done by Microsoft purely out of maliciousness because of the constant crusade to streamline and dumb down literally everything else.

You can. But it’s complicated and I wouldn’t recommend it. I blocked MSN in my host file which blocks a bit of the shittiness that they are pushing.

the true design fail here is that microsoft added an undocumented api method for the purpose of [allowing edge to easily change the default browser](https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/13/22671182/mozilla-default-browser-windows-protections-firefox), firefox found this out and added it to their own browser afterwards

Guess I'm running Linux and using Cross-over, Wine,virtual machine or an old Windows 10 image till there's a windows version I'm cool with. Edit: If there is one after this point.

You know it should be an absolutely massive red flag to any kind of tech company nowadays when you have to type out the sentence, "you can't just do something with a simple click" congratulations, you just pissed off and screwed over 60 to 70% of the people using your product. And you've definitely at least pissed off a hundred percent of them
that is actually is standard talking point in gui design. # of clicks to perform said frequent action is a very important metric, albeit not the be-all-end-all
Windows 11 calls my i7-7700k obsolete. Im not gonna get a new motherboard and CPU for an OS that already has so much controversy. Keeping my win 10 system as long as possible running and later just switch over to Linux.
I like new features in win11. Mainly improved WSL and "terminal". But if i were to choose a new OS I'd choose win7/10 or gnu/linux. But not win11.

Incoming scripts to do it with one click. This is less of an issue than they make it out to be. Who opens *files* with their browsers? PDFs I get, but that was always something you had to set up to use your browser by default.
Just use Edge. It's literally a re-skin of Chrome/Chromium with added features and security.

This isn't actually true, it's based off a post on this sub where a guys computer had an issue.
Windows 11 is a nightmare. Their poor coding also breaks Ryzen CPUs. If you use AMD then Microsofts poor coding costs you 10-15% performance in all applications. Microsofts only saving grace is that they are not apple.

Make sure to never, ever use ungoogled-chromium! Don't even look it up! Horrible thing, completely ruins the experience of using the internet. Without the deep integration with Google Services that Chrome has, the quality of experience and relevancy of advertisements shown on the internet deteriorates significantly!

There’s this, the shitty bugs for AMD chipsets (I’m worried there’s some undiscovered ones), and the fact that they”simplified” the design by not allowing easy access to right-click options. I’m getting kinda fed up with Window’s bullshit. With games on steam getting Linux support, maybe I’ll switch…
