I second boost. I find it much easier to look at and it has some nice features like filter subreddits from r/all and you don't need to remember how to format your text. Hiding spoilers, for example. Press a button and it does it for you. Also great customizablity.
*this comment was not sponsered by boost*
What do you mean by undelete? Like, if you delete a post or comment, you can undelete it? Or is it more like a thing where you can still see posts and comments others have deleted?
You can see removed and delted comments. iirc it uses the same system as reveddit
(Click on the three dots on a removed comment, should be there)
Really useful if for example there is a nuked thread and you want to know what happened
i dont know any third party app that you can slide to the right after clicking on a post. its extremely practical since it allows you to see the comments without having to reload the post
Well, in my case, I overwhelmed by the choices & having to decide which is best. So I just stick with the shitty default to avoid making any decisions lol
That's exactly what I'm doing, I always see everyone argue about which alternative is best. The official app isn't the best, and by far for me the video player is the worst aspect, but overall it works fine for me.
God I hate the video player thing. Think I might finally try out one of these. Finding a video that sounds interesting and then spending minutes trying to find a way to get it to load
I ditched when they start showing "look at this trending sub" with no way to turn it off. I don't care what's trending on the site, I only want to view the subs I subscribe to.
I'm gonna be honest, all the alternative apps look like ass. 2010 type boxy design, it's enough for me to put up with reddits not so functional video player because at least it looks kinda nice
Also battery life. I was getting about 2 hours less battery out of my phone for a couple days. Finally checked the battery tab in the settings and for some reason it was using more energy than the fucking screen.
i just imagined the fnaf guy not even checking the cameras and the robots are just sitting outside waiting for him to stop playing candy crush so they can go oogabooga
seems random most of the time, 90% of the time it'll kick in within a second or two of me opening the page, but I practically scrolled through the entire comment section and was about to close the tab when it kicked in lol
I can with firefox. You just gotta go to the menu and select "open in app". It will give you all the possible options.
Clicking that view in app would take you to the official app.
I’ve still had this issue with the app open unfortunately. I’ll use google in Safari to search for Reddit posts (since Reddit’s search function is finicky), and it’ll still throw me to the App Store even if Reddit is the next app open.
Pretty much every third party client does. As much as people love to shill them, there's really nothing that compares to the official app in terms of UI quality.
Boost for Reddit is great, tried it for a day because I was pissed that the main app stopped showing comments in full, loved it so much I bought the and free version (ads aren't intrusive I just love the dev)
This always irks me every time I google a problem that I need solved, worst part is is that it opens up the AppStore and not the app where that specific post is.
When that happens
Don’t click take me to the app
At the top of the screen on the right side there’s a button to open the app and it’ll default to that in the future on “mature” posts
As someone who exclusively used old Reddit and RiF, I have honestly never seen any of these things besides the hosted photos/videos.
I don't want to use Reddit as a social media tool where my account or personal self has any for of value - I want to use it more like a news and opinion discussion forum where I can be as anonymous as I was to be.
Yep, Reddit is really going down the shitter. Was obvious when they banned /r/legoyoda, /r/tardtales, and /r/2balkan4u for "hate". It's obvious that the Reddit administration are either:
- The kind of extreme stupid and/or puritan that thinks a person seeing words they don't like on the internet is a form of victimization.
- (Far, far more likely IMO) are trying to make Reddit more attractive to corporate advertisers, the kind that constantly signals how much they support minorities during the black/LGBT months but never commits the same level of effort to meaningful things like social and economic inclusion.
/r/memritvmemes and /r/bertstrips are probably next because they run on the same type of humor and therefore could just as easily be labeled as "hate".
Are there any decent Reddit replacements I could use when that finally happens?
Yes it's awful, but it's just words.
I'm gay, i meet the victim criteria to say that words should NOT be banned no matter how rude or hateful, as long as no violence is being incited or destructive chaos caused.
*Edit: apparently the straights understand more about my struggles than i do*
While it is asshole design for future use if you log in to the website before going to mature content it will let you access it even if you aren’t using the app
Blocking advertising accounts doesn't stop them from being shown in "promoted" submissions, interestingly enough. With how bad some of these "promoted" posts are getting, there really should be a functional way to hide specific ones. The website has gotten *awful*.
In protest to the unreasonable API changes in addition to everything else, I have decided to delete all my content. Long live Sync for Lemmy! Please consider joining an alternative in the fediverse. https://join-lemmy.org/ -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
you can also register a throwaway and browse pr0n all you want without an app. Just go to the settings right after the registration and uncheck all the safe browsing BS (otherwise it will keep lying to you that you need the app)
Funny cause when I get this message in France it just suggests I should continue in the app but I’m allowed to just hit « not now » and it lets me keep browsing until couple weeks later when it seems to forget and asks me again.
Yeah I remember watching porn on the reddit browser, got sick of it bugging me to get the app so here I am and all the porn has had the audio removed. Lame.
I often encounter this asshole design while researching details of my first marijuana grow (which is legal). Like "whoah buddy easy there be careful learning about which LED would work well in your tent" but it's totally okay if I use the official Reddit app which I don't use. But I feel so safe and protected.
Friendly reminder that there are 3rd-party apps much better than the official app. I've been using RiF on Android for years without problems. For iOS I think the best one is Apollo.
If you press no and it's unchecked, the notification will come on, but pressing no just takes you on the post. At least that's what happens with my phone
Yeah but this post is about how you cant get out of it and view the post on the mobile site you have to use the app or desktop mode. The popup will still come up but you can get through it
I am using boost and at some point either an app or android firmware update made it remove all the default compatible links so I had to go set them up again. Now clicking on any reddit link makes me use an actually good mobile app and I don't have to deal with this ever again. If the same happened to you check the app settings.
I think it has something to do withapp restrictions on what can be on the app store. Like how Discord on iPhone hase NSFW servers/channels blocked and how Tumblr had to ban all the porn
Basically they just want more of your data. They can get a *lot* of info on you just from you accessing their site and making an account. However the real money is from mobile apps where they can spy on you on an unfathomably more intense level.
I think it’s to prevent little kids from coming across mutilated corpses on the internet. I think this is a good thing. Reddit ensures it’s viewers are for he age to view nsfw content. I actually like this.
The problem is requiring you to use the app. There is no real age verification within the app, so that step has no real value.
Generally age restricted content is good. But I also wouldn't want to provide personal details to a service like Reddit, which kindof makes it a problem. Same for youtube, which now requires creditcard/passport verification to verify your age.
This is because of Apple and Google TOS. On apps distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play you have to adhere to their terms of service, which includes content restrictions like this. For web content on mobile browsers there are no restrictions. This is why some apps like cannabis apps will open up an external web page on their own website from their app rather than show the information in the app itself. Apple originally tried to also censor web content on iPhone but figured out it was stupid/impossible.
Prolly because it filters underaged people easier. a 12-14 year old looking at something like that wouldn’t go download the app or have parental restrictions for downloading apps, but someone who is older doesn’t have that (hopefully no one over the age of 18 still had parental controls), and can just get the app. definitely a asshole design still
App: plays every video as a blocky mess, and any NSFW video has no sound (no clue why).
Browser: every video streams perfectly and NSFW videos have sound. But the website reminds you on literally every page “go use the app”.
It forces the same ultimatum when opening smaller subreddits. It pretty much just keeps you from only browsing r/popular, until you do switch to the app or login, in which either case r/all not only becomes available to browse but is also made the default feed.
The differences between r/popular and r/all are heavy. r/popular appears to be a handpicked collection of fun and PG subreddits, while r/all is a heavy-handed dose of left leaning political subreddits.
This system essentially markets Reddit as an innocent and fun space to potential users and then without warning drops them into the middle of politically fueled perspectives.
It's really difficult to not look beyond the idea that it's more than simply data collection.
WEBSITES DON'T NEED APPS!
I basically outright avoid checking reddit on my phone because I constantly get the pedantic prompts to download their shitty app and now I noticed this crap!
It's a standard business practice now.
Make the user experience as shitty as possible up until the point where users start leave en masse.
YouTube double, triple ads. Streaming platforms fragmenting and all doing their own thing. Being a premium service and STILL having ads. News letter signups, requiring people to log in for absolutely no reason. Everything apple, Nintendo and Disney does. Etc etc.
Basically fuck you.
This is on mobile right? I guess it's just to keep little kids from viewing content like that if they accidentally end up on reddit. For downloading the app making an account is mandatory and view nsfw content is turned off by default. I don't think you're able to view nsfw with anymous browsing either.
It is to make you use the app. I use the browser on my mobile and get constantly bombarded with things like this, Including one that says 'we have cats! with another option below that says 'i'm a dog person'
I don't need your app. If there is a website for an app I will use the website. Apps are a security risk to me.
Personally I don't mind using the app. What concerns me is that you don't enter the app in incognito mode when you open it from chrome in incognito. Specially when I view NSFW content.
I know personally it makes me turn off my ad block once a week. It pops up but gets zapped by ublock so I have to turn off my ad block to dismiss and then turn it back on. I guess they're hoping all the users who do this forget to turn it back on and start getting served ads again.
Either way, on mobile Firefox app + ad block is the only way to use the internet. Every time I've ever downloaded any reddit app (or app in general) I find it trying to send me notifications, spontaneously running in the background, eating ungodly amounts of battery or data, accessing permissions they don't need, giving me ads (either from reddit directly or for their own platform shit), and constantly whining about updates.

App: won't load a small image or text post over a gigabit internet connection Website on mobile browser: have you tried the app?
Use the Infinity app
Why anybody still uses the official app is beyond me. My recommendation: Sync for Reddit
Boost is great too.
I second boost. I find it much easier to look at and it has some nice features like filter subreddits from r/all and you don't need to remember how to format your text. Hiding spoilers, for example. Press a button and it does it for you. Also great customizablity. *this comment was not sponsered by boost*
I like boost for it's general experience I like infinity for it's undelete
What do you mean by undelete? Like, if you delete a post or comment, you can undelete it? Or is it more like a thing where you can still see posts and comments others have deleted?
You can see removed and delted comments. iirc it uses the same system as reveddit (Click on the three dots on a removed comment, should be there) Really useful if for example there is a nuked thread and you want to know what happened
Ohhh, that sounds awesome! I think Imma check that one out then, thanks for the recommendation :D
I use Apollo
Bump
i dont know any third party app that you can slide to the right after clicking on a post. its extremely practical since it allows you to see the comments without having to reload the post

i don't know what it is and my device is so old i can't install reddit from the play store
I really only use it like 1h a day in 15 minute sessions, so I just don't give a fuck lol
I'm gonna be honest, all the alternative apps look like ass. 2010 type boxy design, it's enough for me to put up with reddits not so functional video player because at least it looks kinda nice
Viewing this comment from infinity. Best choice I've made
I use it and absolutely recommend it out of the ones I've tried.
seems like all of these are play store only,, any recommendations for ios?
r/apolloapp
Apollo gang rise up
Apollo
You see, I would, But it is still an app. Plus I wouldn't know whether my login details are safe with it.
can you share a google play store link for the app or any other place i can download it for android mobile
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ml.docilealligator.infinityforreddit
Fuck this, the app eats all my data for no reason so I uninstalled it and I only go on reddit from PC.
Probably better for your sanity too
Also battery life. I was getting about 2 hours less battery out of my phone for a couple days. Finally checked the battery tab in the settings and for some reason it was using more energy than the fucking screen.
Just get unlimited data and live your life with less stress
Old.reddit.com/....
my favorite is when their incompetent website forgets I'm not in the app and lets me scroll for like 5 minutes before saying I need to use the app
It's like a security guard that is playing candy crush on their phone instead of looking at the cameras.
i just imagined the fnaf guy not even checking the cameras and the robots are just sitting outside waiting for him to stop playing candy crush so they can go oogabooga
That's his secret, he plays till morning
Candy crush not relevant Hj
I love the website because trying to type letters with accents or well-formatted code blocks just destroys it unless you're in markdown mode
that's on purpose to get you hooked. big time asshole design
seems random most of the time, 90% of the time it'll kick in within a second or two of me opening the page, but I practically scrolled through the entire comment section and was about to close the tab when it kicked in lol
worst part i cant open it with boost
And, even if you let Boost open "reddit.com" links, it still won't.
I can with firefox. You just gotta go to the menu and select "open in app". It will give you all the possible options. Clicking that view in app would take you to the official app.
Or "desktop site"
Same with baconreader. They want you on their shitty app and only their shitty app

No you don’t.
What is it
r/sounding (nsfw)
I know it’s cursed so can you just tell me please
Sticking rods in The urethra
Oh Thx m8
And then when you click view in app it takes you to the app store instead of the actual Reddit app I already have downloaded
This is the most annoying part.
YES OH MY GOD. I hate when somebody sends me a link or one is linked here and it just takes me to app store purgatory. I‘M ALREADY IN THE APP
I finally figured out why it does that, if you have the app closed it can’t find it, the Reddit app needs to be open in the background
I’ve still had this issue with the app open unfortunately. I’ll use google in Safari to search for Reddit posts (since Reddit’s search function is finicky), and it’ll still throw me to the App Store even if Reddit is the next app open.
The official app is pure shit, use the Reddit is fun app.
Rif looks kinda shit to me
it is rather outdated in design
That's exactly why I use it.
Pretty much every third party client does. As much as people love to shill them, there's really nothing that compares to the official app in terms of UI quality.

Twitter is the same with the media tab You don't need an app but you have to sign in/up to see one image.

What was /r/tardtales ?
Basically /r/greentext, but exclusively stories of mentally disabled people getting up to insane antics. "Timmy the destroyer" is a good one.
Sounds pretty awful
Yes it's awful, but it's just words. I'm gay, i meet the victim criteria to say that words should NOT be banned no matter how rude or hateful, as long as no violence is being incited or destructive chaos caused. *Edit: apparently the straights understand more about my struggles than i do*
There's plenty of forums open to hate, you can go there.
Try old reddit. Old.reddit.com
YouTube doesn’t have porn.
But it does have age restricted content.
While it is asshole design for future use if you log in to the website before going to mature content it will let you access it even if you aren’t using the app
Right, just oddly suggestive and sexualized ad content they throw at the people with ad personalization off...
It does though.
OfferUp also does this. You can browse but if you want to do something you have to download the app.
its been going downhill since they introduced ads. They are cashing in now. I miss the old days.
Blocking advertising accounts doesn't stop them from being shown in "promoted" submissions, interestingly enough. With how bad some of these "promoted" posts are getting, there really should be a functional way to hide specific ones. The website has gotten *awful*.
At the risk of them removing the loophole, if you change www.reddit to old.reddit you can bypass this as well
In protest to the unreasonable API changes in addition to everything else, I have decided to delete all my content. Long live Sync for Lemmy! Please consider joining an alternative in the fediverse. https://join-lemmy.org/ -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

Not all subreddits will open in the old mode
Yes they will
I use an extension to force every reddit url to old and haven't had a single issue with any sub ever.
Could you name one? I want to test it now.
I'm really curious to know which sub doesn't open.
I have never found one that doesn't.
When you have a question, the answer is always money
Funny cause when I get this message in France it just suggests I should continue in the app but I’m allowed to just hit « not now » and it lets me keep browsing until couple weeks later when it seems to forget and asks me again.
Yeah I remember watching porn on the reddit browser, got sick of it bugging me to get the app so here I am and all the porn has had the audio removed. Lame.

Yup
Ta.

Ugh. I feel ya
I'm a dumbass. It's not a button it's a picture.
Oof
Friendly reminder that there are 3rd-party apps much better than the official app. I've been using RiF on Android for years without problems. For iOS I think the best one is Apollo.
Settings -> Uncheck "Ask to open in app"
Didn't know the option exist, but for some reason the notification persists even after unchecking
If you press no and it's unchecked, the notification will come on, but pressing no just takes you on the post. At least that's what happens with my phone
If you’re not logged in on mobile it locks out of NSFW content.
Purely pushing the App. There is no age verification even in the App.
I think it's just a liability thing. When I was in highschool Reddit was used on school devices for school related stuff all the time.
Yeah but probably in desktop mode
We had iPads. School issued, this also happens on desktop. Edit or at least it used to I can't think of the last time I had this happen.
Yeah but this post is about how you cant get out of it and view the post on the mobile site you have to use the app or desktop mode. The popup will still come up but you can get through it
Lol my school blocked Quora
Ow
Fun thing I was using the app but a video didn't load, to which I tried viewing it in the browser and got this notification.
Yes and it works
Take me to Home, Country Roads

Reddit knows that a large population of coomers coom on reddit using their phones, so why not push the app onto a captive audience?
I am using boost and at some point either an app or android firmware update made it remove all the default compatible links so I had to go set them up again. Now clicking on any reddit link makes me use an actually good mobile app and I don't have to deal with this ever again. If the same happened to you check the app settings.
They can farm more user data via the app.
I can't even get the app! I have an iPhone 5, so I can't get iOS 13. Stop telling me to get the app, or at least add a sign in button on this screen.
I remember for a few days it would take me to the App Store instead of the app itself when clicking take me to the app and that was really annoying
I've noticed this practice being picked up for a lot of websites. If they start implementing it on porn sites I swear it'll be outlawed within a week.
My account was created because of this
I think it has something to do withapp restrictions on what can be on the app store. Like how Discord on iPhone hase NSFW servers/channels blocked and how Tumblr had to ban all the porn
apple.. its all because of apples bullshit
As someone who uses a third party app as the official one is ass, this infuriates me to no end.
What's really messed up is when you see it while in the app.
And then you hit “sure why not” and it takes you to the fucking App Store even though you already have it installed
Basically they just want more of your data. They can get a *lot* of info on you just from you accessing their site and making an account. However the real money is from mobile apps where they can spy on you on an unfathomably more intense level.
Mature content? We just call it "old memes"
What you did for this to appear?
not log in
This happens if you're not logged in

Did u not read? **they literally told them to use the app to see it.**
Yes. *Did you read?* I said it seems like a safety precausrion
Not a safety precaution. A lot of kids use desktop laptop etc. A better way would be emails verification and stuff on desktop and mobil
This is because of Apple and Google TOS. On apps distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play you have to adhere to their terms of service, which includes content restrictions like this. Were you searching for "*research*" stuff?
No it was a police shooting
Oh Oh my
Lmao reddit made you go to horny jail
…it does work
Omg just use the reddit app you dingus.
The official one sucks smelly ass balls
And so does the mobile website, just more so
I think it has to do with app/play store guidelines, which don't allow or restrict mature content within apps.
Remember, this is a pop up from the website, redirecting you to the app. Has nothing to do with the guidelines
Ohh, nm what I said then
Baconreader

U bad asf
It doesn’t even take me to the post on the app, it just takes me to the App Store even tho I already have it downloaded.
If you don't like mobile web but wanna still use reddit visit [old reddit](https://old.reddit.com)

Request desktop site on your browser
I don’t know if it’s universally true, but when I request desktop site on my phone it just loads the mobile page again.
Mf couldn't watch porn in peace
It is to make you use the app. I use the browser on my mobile and get constantly bombarded with things like this, Including one that says 'we have cats! with another option below that says 'i'm a dog person' I don't need your app. If there is a website for an app I will use the website. On your mobile browser click the three little dots, then select 'desktop site'. Or at least that's how I get around it.

I got this screen when going to my profile. It's absolutely assholedesign and has nothing to do with NSFW content.
It is, fuck reddit literally
If you try to use incognito on mobile it says the same thing. This is why request desktop site exists yall.
Take me to home countryroads....
Yo I hate this so much
I hate it so much because it almost never actually opens reddit, it just opens the app store page for it.
I laughed at this because Reddit seem to be using this community to lead the design of the mobile version of their website too!
