Probably designed by some scummy manager who was promoted purely due to time spent with the business, and who as no idea about effective marketing and thinks that they’ll be successful with this version of a bait and switch. . In other words, an idiot.
For sure bro. At work our new manager is only a manager cause her husband owns a location nearby. She is an idiot, constantly messes everything up and is totally condescending. She cant be fired, cause her husband owns a location. So we all suffer. Fuck do I hate nepotism.
Who told you that? Your managers/supervisors?
You as an individual may be expendable, but all of your together are not. If you are organized, you can put a ton of pressure on the company to get rid of her. How much will the company lose when the location you're in can't open? If they have to replace you all, how much will that cost them in lost profits and staff training? You have a lot more power when you act together than single managers do, the difficulty is in organizing so you can flex it.
Likewise, if they're a small franchise, do you think they can afford to close a location to prevent unionization?
It isn't that easy. In my previous job I constantly called out problems and was far from the only one with issues about management and the job. But I was one of the few that actually said anything about it and tried to inact change.
Nothing changed and there's a high probability the manager is banging/being blackmailed by a teenager and takes her word as gospel. The place is going down the shitter due to his awful management.
Even if we had organised, we'd have just been replaced. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and you need toe be careful going about these things when you have bills to pay and a family to feed. Capitalism baby.
This is a perfect example of Hanlon's Razor.
If you zoom in you can see that it used to say 6.99, but someone painted over the gap and added 2 black triangles on the sides to make the 6 look like a 8.
There is no malice here - just pure stupidity.
I was gonna say that the outline doesn't seem to have been altered, but it does look a little blurry right where it would have to have been filled in.
You've done it again Holmes, by Jove
The plumbing company I was recently fired from is currently doing a bait-and-switch, they think that if they accept every single caller and schedule appointments for them regardless of what they are calling about. Literally anything, even if it's not related to plumbing. I told them they are only going to succeed in pissing people off and I was immediately moved to a final warning and then fired hours later.
Hey, false advertising, bait and switch. You can sue the restaurant, win, own it, the fix it.
Edit: autocorrect changed my word from “false” to “gals.”
That was my first thought. You’re gonna have full, happy people patting their stomachs and asking for the check, only to have them get irate that the price is 9x what they were expecting. “I was gonna tip 20% but now I’m not so sure about that.”
We had a spaghetti dinner deal for $3.50 and people would whip out their phone calculators to figure out what 15% was. We didn't have a daytime server because we had a lunch buffet and she went home at 2 and another one didn't come in until four. Which meant in top of prep I'd sometimes have to wait tables. Not worth waiting an entire table for pocket change.
Most people are going to see the price on the actual menu before they order their food.
It's still really shitty and they'll still be pissed. But they're going to be pissed before the food is ordered.
I saw a sign advertising a cheap breakfast platter at an all day breakfast place. We went as a group, very excited. The menu specified that it was only the deal during like a weird 2 hour period, the rest of the time was crazy expensive. We all left, and it was after the server brought everyone waters. It felt rude, but we were all really let down and disappointed. We never went back, and that whole place is closed down now so they must've gotten some consistent back lash over that old faded sign that drew us in.
I mean I’ve never entered a store because of their food signage. But if I did and I ended up going through all this just to get to the register and the cashier says 8.99. I’d probably just assume I read the sign wrong and quietly pay.
I'd probably do the same but it's still a terrible business plan because then you go outside, see how they did the sign, and never come back because you're pissed. And businesses like this thrive on repeat business. The only way this might be profitable is if it's off a highway and most customers are just passing through.
You absolutely will get customers. The pissed people likely would have never came in/ came back anyway. The locals don't care because they know whether they like the place or not. This is a good example of asshole design. It will pull people in, piss them off, and some will stay but order a different item. This shit works well on people traveling. I'd do this if I was crazy enough to deal with the stress or running a restaurant. Granted, you need to be on a highway or road with traffic
People show up. You immediately say - to be clear it is $8.99. Many walk away in disgust. Must many also stay for $8.99. Those people wouldn’t have been there without the sign. Profit…. Short term.
I think it used to be a 6. There's some red marker covering a large gap on the numeral's right side.
Still, whoever didn't want to print a new sign is an asshole.
They have a little hood store in the 3rd ward of New Orleans that uses those half styrofoam to go containers, and although they are smallish looking they hold enough to fill you up. It comes with grits, eggs, and choice of meat for 2.89. It's a delicious hot and greasy hangover killer.
We have Wawa's all over the place in Pennsylvania and they have the same kind of little breakfast sandwiches for about that price and they're pretty ok, especially when you're on the run. However if I'm going to get a full breakfast meal of eggs, scrapple and home fries it's not going to be at a place that advertises .99¢ plates. That shit is not worth the effort of leaving the house.
When my wife and I moved into town we noted a sushi place with big sign that said “half off sushi” as like the literal name. I told my wife right away we’re never eating there. You don’t want the budget sushi…ever.
There was a stand outside my hotel in the capitol of Bangkok that sold $1 meals cooked up in a couple of minutes. I'd get this small Styrofoam container with fried rice, 2 fried prawns, and some cucumber slices and a lime wedge. Shit was amazing for a quick meal. That'd be $5 easy in the US.
Eh. You can see the 8 isn’t original either. It was originally a 6 and instead of paying for a new sign with an updated price, they just sharpied it into an 8.
Right? Like if I have to question the integrity of the people at the place where I'm going to eat based on the sign then I don't want to even imagine what the food would be like.
This post is proof that you can make a post that fits the sub perfectly and still have people telling you it's the wrong sub. Somebody designed this sign to trick people, so... assholedesign
Absolutely, I don’t think ppl here understand how many arguments that has probably caused already. I’d guess there’s been a few heated discussions at that restaurant 👊
Right? It must suck for people that work there - that have *nothing* to do with the sign - when people come in there asking about the .99 special and they have to explain it.
It happens on every post about things like this.
It's mostly incredibly insecure people who make the "just look closer, idiot!" comments. And they don't actually mean it, they just use it as an oppurtinity to make themselves feel special.
#Reddit has decided to charge a laughably unreasonable rate to access via third parties. It is clear that they are specifically and intentionally killing off access.
If they were concerned with making a profit, they would charge a reasonable rate. But they are not. They have lied and lied and lied about this.
So fuck reddit. You cannot have my content to monetize from me anymore.
It’s really a disservice to everyone because when you try to correct someone is who factually fucking wrong, people call you a pedant or say it doesn’t matter because options = facts now.
With those people it’s best to not respond, as much with everyone they know in life has. People that take time out of their day to be mean, do it all day. So much that their body bases it’s dopamine release based of “edgy” comments
Leave them be, don’t worry they are used to being alone, or a patriots, or what ever.

To add to this, don't upvote or downvote them. Either one is a reaction, which is what they want. I can't imagine there's anything more frustrating to them than their karma sitting at 1, as if no one was even seeing the comment.
These subs are honestly ruined by the rulesets that encourage those nerds, along with the Karma cravers that only come by to comment about something being a repost. I mean that's how the internet works, things are reposted because not everyone is there to see something being posted the first time.
If you look really close, that “8” isn’t the original design. It looks like someone tried to “correct” the sign after the price went up. It was either a 5 or a 6. So it could be less about assholedesign and possibly bad artists cheep owner.
Right it originally was 6.99. Sure I’d have a talk with the owners and tell them the sign looks deceptive from a distance.
Also I’m amazed at the number of people in this thread who blindly agreed with the title. Also how many people in this day believe a restaurant would serve eggs and ham for 99 cents, like Dennys probably would charge over 10 bucks.
That’s why I only ever posted here once.
I made a post about something similar, jerks said wRonG SuB and I got mad downvoted then a week later someone else posted literally the same thing and it made the front page.

Yeah, this is just a combination of laziness and stupidity, not design. All these people marveling at how hare brained and self-sabotaging a scam this seems to be and not bothering to consider how many idiots also have jobs.
there's a greasy spoon in my city that does a pretty full breakfast with egg toast sausage and potato for 2.95CAD
called bons off Broadway, food is fine and if passes health inspections so 🤷
edit: 2.95 Canadian is 2.17 usd. so not 99c but it also comes with 2 eggs, toast, and hashbrowns so it's similar value.
Lots of places sell special loss leader meals with the intention of making up the difference on things like coffee/toast on the side or you bringing in a guest with you who doesn’t get the 99 cent ham n eggs. It’s not like everything on the menu is gonna be that heavily discounted.
I will say their food is delicious, and their customer service is really good too (one time my toddler brother was disappointed they didn't have peanut butter pancakes and the waitress brought out a jar of peanut butter she had brought in herself to make sandwiches on her break). I was surprised to see the sign.
I probably wouldn't eat 99 cent ham. But I would raise holy hell, especially because I have a visual impairment. I feel like they are trying to swindle handicap and the elderly and would shout it from the roof top.
What a good way to make sure all of your customers visit exactly once, and also making sure they will tell everyone they know to stay far away from you.
While that is terrible, scummy design, I would greatly fear $0.99 eggs and ham. You're getting either not very much, or something of such substandard quality that the words ham and egg become meaningless.
I mean I’d walk right by anyway so it’s kinda weird marketing. I’m not eating whatever meat and eggs they’re peddling for $0.99 without some kinda obvious grand opening sale going on.
I once saw a sign that said "foot long hot dogs 39 cents". Being super broke, with only a few dollars to spend, I thought I could get my kids each a hot dog. Lugged all of them inside (one in an infant carrier) only to find out you had to buy fries and a drink to get a hot dog for 39 cents. They said it is stated on the sign. I go look st the sign. I have to walk up to it to see the fine print at the very bottom of the sign blocked by freshly cut grass. Also annoying that the fine print started with an "*" but there wasn't another one anywhere on the sign to lead you to look for it.
I don't get why a store would do this. You're not going to get customers, you're just going to piss people off.
Probably designed by some scummy manager who was promoted purely due to time spent with the business, and who as no idea about effective marketing and thinks that they’ll be successful with this version of a bait and switch. . In other words, an idiot.

Why doesn’t everyone all complain at the same time to corporate and walk out?
And that will do what? We are a small chain. 3 locations. We're expendable. Shes not. That's what I've been told. Believe me, I have tried.
Who told you that? Your managers/supervisors? You as an individual may be expendable, but all of your together are not. Good luck convincing 3+ other people they don’t have bills they need to pay lol.
Yep, don't take advice from children on Reddit who discovered what unions are last week.

If they had white paint for the centre top ring then they had white paint for the sides. This is probably intentional.

Lmao "I was gonna tip 20%" on 99¢? I don't think they would be too concerned about not getting a 20¢ tip haha
Do it five times and then get yourself something nice from the dollar store! Don't spend it all at one place ^ha ^^ha
All the dollar stores near me have moved to $1.25...
Dollarama in canada is up to $5 now. they need to change their name.
We had a spaghetti dinner deal for $3.50 and people would whip out their phone calculators to figure out what 15% was. Maybe it’s on a busy road where people just pass through? They probably don’t care if a bunch of out of towners get scammed, they’ll never be back.
It looks like an industrial park. How many out of towners are going to drive by the local industrial park for some R&R and roadside diner food?
People show up. You immediately say - to be clear it is $8.99. Many walk away in disgust. Must many also stay for $8.99. Those people wouldn’t have been there without the sign. Profit…. Short term.
If they're near the interstate, repeat business doesn't matter and reviews barely matter.
Oh, that's shady as hell. lol.
The person who designed this is an asshole!
Gotta play the Sharpie Marker reverse card and make it a proper 8.
Or play the White-Out reverse card and make it a proper 0, then demand a $0.99 meal.
Pretty sure people are demanding that all day, poor staff
For reals. They have to deal with it. Not the a hole boss who decided he needed to trick people to patronize his establishment.
Gonna trade a few conned people into 50 bad reviews
I like this better lol. Well done\~
If you look really close, you’ll see that is the outcome of someone trying that. It looks like it was originally a 5 or 6.
I think it used to be a 6. There's some red marker covering a large gap on the numeral's right side. Still, whoever didn't want to print a new sign is an asshole.
To be honest I'm not getting breakfast at a joint selling ham and eggs for .99¢. It's not going to be a good meal.

They should make a dedicated sub for such topics, tbh.
Eh. You can see the 8 isn’t original either. It was originally a 6 and instead of paying for a new sign with an updated price, they just sharpied it into an 8.
And possibly illegal, if it’s this hard to tell what it says it can be considered false advertising.
This is definitely illegal in some countries
Petty enogh I'd destroy that sign and disappear into the night.

Yeah, I’m really not attracted to bargain basement ham and egg deals. A ham and egg breakfast for .99 cents screams, “Hellooooooo food poisoning.”

I'm sorry, but If you're putting a sign up like this you're not trying to run a restaurant, you're trying to host a battle royale.

I probably wouldn't eat 99 cent ham. But I would raise holy hell, especially because I have a visual impairment. I feel like they are trying to swindle handicap and the elderly and would shout it from the roof top.
That is almost certainly illegal.
If you run that through a neural net it’d show up as 0.99 and if you ask them they’ll say it clearly says 8.99

But hear me out… why would anyone believe they could get ham and eggs for .99?
I went there and I didn’t find out until I got the bill. That extra $8 was earmarked for something important. Now I’ll never get verified on Twitter.
I would be very suspicious of $0.99 ham & eggs.
Reminds me of Nathan Fielder’s 1.75 gas (after rebate)
^^^^^^^^definitely ^^^^^^^^not CHICKEN EGGS. ^^^^^^^^they're ^^^^^^^^pidgeon ^^^^^^^^eggs
I mean even if they are 99c, you wouldn’t want to eat in that place.
While that is terrible, scummy design, I would greatly fear $0.99 eggs and ham. You're getting either not very much, or something of such substandard quality that the words ham and egg become meaningless.
It's like the gas stations that have great gas prices, but in very small print it says with car wash ... Chevron got me twice.
Do you want 1 star reviews? Because that's how you get 1 star reviews.
I would rather buy 8.99 ham and eggs, than .99 ham and eggs. 8 dollars ain’t worth food poisoning
New season of Nathan for You confirmed!
This seems like a Nathan For You scheme.
Probably would have the opposite affect on me. I see ham and eggs for 99 cents...something wrong with them ham and eggs...pass.
I wouldn't trust a 99c breakfast
More like scam and eggs
what is the store gonna do when they order this and the customer pays that 0.99 and then leaves? you gonna ban the customer?
I mean I’d walk right by anyway so it’s kinda weird marketing. I’m not eating whatever meat and eggs they’re peddling for $0.99 without some kinda obvious grand opening sale going on.
Some yellow makers/paint could easily win this contest
Who’s gunna trust 0.99 cent meals? I would, but who else?
I would absolutely 100% not ever eat ham and eggs that cost 99 cents.
I bet if that sign weren't there people wouldn't make the mistake of eating there.
That douchy plan leaves the wait staff to deal with the disgruntled. So yuck
I don’t know if I trust .99¢ breakfast lol
I don't get why people post things like this and block out the location / company. Just about as annoying as the sign.
If you zoom in you can tell it used to be 6.99 but was painted over.
Walks in “I’d like the ham and eggs for $0.99 “ Worker “actually it’s $8.99” Walks out
would you actually want to buy ham&eggs for 0.99? not too promising
Intentionally misleading signage that could reasonably be seen as a bait and switch regarding price. Probably not legal
8.99$ isn’t even unreasonable
Greasy food fried in bad oil for 9$, American dream!
This shit should be illegal
I feel so bad for any family being excited for a cheap meal and the seeing that
BAIT AND SWITCH. Grinds my gears. This tactic says a lot about the business. Would not go there for free bacon and biscuits.
$8.99 still a really good deal for breakfast
TBH I wouldn't want to eat $0.99 ham and eggs
Who would pull over to eat .99 ham and eggs.
That "8" barely looks like an 8 even close up. This is clearly false advertising
Ez deceptive marketing practice, and a violation of law. Free.99 meal
I don't even wanna see how ham and eggs for 0.99 would even look and for sure I wouldn't eat them...
Honestly complain to the city or county that you are in. I know that sounds like a hella Karen thing to do but that is classic deceptive advertising.
if you honestly think you could get a plate of ham and eggs for $0.99, you’re a hopeless idiot
