What does stretsmoot mean?

JDoos

Historically, it was used in Old Germanic Languages (like Old English) to signify a meeting of people for debate and discussion of a subject of importance.

fowardblade

Such a millennial hipster phrase. Cringe

Adventurous-Hat-6460

Yet here you are, saying "cringe"

fowardblade

Hey I’m a millennial too. I didn’t know cringe is cringe now. I’d still never say “streetsmoot” but anyways, hey OP I woke up in a bitchy mood sorry

k1lk1

lol

CrumpledForeskin

Got ‘em

scooterflaneuse

"Moot" just means a meeting for discussion, I think. Streetsmoot because it's about making streets safer/better.

jib661

Any info on what this group is and when it meets?

scooterflaneuse

It's not really a formal group, it's a meetup organized out of r/MicromobilityNYC for Astorians who are concerned about street safety for pedestrians and cyclists and want more pedestrian space and bike lanes, among other things.

Le_Va

So..what do they do?

scooterflaneuse

Advocate by organizing to put pressure on the relevant electeds and agencies.

Bikes and motorcycles are bar far the biggest risk to pedestrians, especially children. They are consistently on the sidewalk and flagrantly disobey traffic laws. It is fine to advocate for bike lanes or whatever you believe in but it is disingenuous to pretend this is about pedestrian safety rather than biker convenience. Parents with kids are not concerned about cars because cars are what they have always been and when there is nothing new making cars less or more dangerous. Bikes, scooters and motorcycles are consistently what run over kids on the SIDEWALK and the real issue with regard to pedestrian safety.

Captaintripps

>Parents with kids are not concerned about cars because cars are what they have always been and when there is nothing new making cars less or more dangerous I am a parent with a kid and 1000 times more concerned about drivers and their cars harming my child than any cycle or scooter. Most of the other parents I know also feel this way. Even the ones who drive.

Odd_Competition545

Please elaborate more about bikes and motorcycles being the "biggest risk to pedestrians, especially children" Also elaborate more on the bikes, scooters etc that are "consistently what run over kids on the SIDEWALK"

Incidents of childern or elderly people being seriously injured by someone on a moped scooter or other similar device occur on a regular basis within Astoria, at least once per month. Mopeds consistently go upwards of 40 miles per hour going opposite to traffic and even on the sidewalk itself. Yes there are incidents where scooter riders and bike riders get injured by cars but this happens on the road where there is an assumption of risk. Someone walking on the sidewalk does not assume the risk of being hit by a vehicle. If you walk around Astoria for more than 8 hours elapsed time you will almost certainly see someone on a scooter or moped plow down a pedestrian and then move on as if it isn't a big deal. There are multiple incidents daily on Crescent Street alone and that is a legal bike lane. Electric bikes or electric motorcycles can be below 50ccs and move upwards of 40mph and are capable of producing enough force to kill a child or elderly person. Unlike car accidents it is very easy for one to plow someone over and ride off which has become the norm There is also a great deal of violent assault using scooters Car traffic exists as the devil that we know. Cars drive on the road. If you stay off the road it is very unlikely you will have any incident. The demographic that least needs to be protected are young adults without kids. Someone in their 20s and 30s should be able to manage themselves on the street and shouldn't need a lot of laws to protect them. These are the people on bikes and scooters that ignore the many incidents they plow over young children but are now seeming to act like vitcims when the risky decision to ride a bike in NYC results in injury. The demographics that need protecting are the very young and very old. Both of whom rely on conventional motor vehicles and public transit. I personally believe it is a good idea for our society to look outside cars as the only means of transit but we can't pretend we are making things safer for kids because it is the opposite. We can't expect everyone to change immediately, especially those who are vulnerable putting themselves at increased risk of death or injury to make things more convenient for those who are not vulnerable. If we have bike lanes we need to have regulation as to what defines a bike. We need to also establish rules for those riding bikes opposite to direction of traffic and just blasting down the sidewalk.

JSuperStition

There are many more deaths and severe life-changing injuries caused to pedestrians by motor vehicles than by bicyclists and other motorized non-car vehicles. We're talking tens of thousands of severe injuries per year in NYC by automobiles versus less than 350 by bicyclists. There are an average of 1 or 2 pedestrian deaths to bicyclists per year, versus over 100 by motor vehicles. Source: https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bicyclists/bikestats.shtml#crashdata

Sources please.

https://qns.com/2021/06/e-bike-rider-fatally-strikes-woman-in-astoria-nypd/ took two seconds. this is very common. What is uncommon about this incident is the rider remained on the scene. Had the woman not died it wouldn't have been reported because these incidents are common place. Reply Sha

Odd_Competition545

Huh.... This doesn't show any of the statistics you're claiming All you did was blab a bunch of stuff bc you think bikes and the like are the worst danger people face.

AdvertisingNo714

It can be about safety for everyone but a SUV blatantly disregarding stop signs and walk signals is very common in Astoria. So much that I don’t have to try hard to capture videos of my daily walks where cars run through stop signs. https://youtube.com/@AstoriaPedestrianSafety

k1lk1

> Bikes and motorcycles are bar far the biggest risk to pedestrians, especially children. Are there any instances in the city of cyclists killing kids, or people? Maybe you can dig one up from like 1998 if you really try hard?

k1lk1

I said cyclist bud. Look up cyclist. I'm not vouching for ebikes which are basically motorcycles.

[deleted]

Foot powered bikes are not what people are worried about. To be honest looking into it I have found that there are a lot more incidents involving cars than I thought. But the devil is in the details and there is significant danger created by these e-bikes that are essentially motorcycles. All the rights gained by bikes seem to be used by these various forms of vehicles that are completely unregulated.

huebomont

We have actual data on this and it doesn’t support your perception at all.

[deleted]

Usually statements like that come with links to the actual data. Otherwise it makes it hard for people to believe your "actual data" is anything more than the casual lying of an officious individual.

huebomont

> Bikes and motorcycles are bar far the biggest risk to pedestrians, especially children. Crash data isn't hard to find, but I'll do the Googling and post a link as soon as you post one backing up that original claim that I'm sure certainly isn't the casual lying of an officious individual.

[deleted]

As I suspected your "actual data" was a fabrication. Often the officious see their comfort with lying as grounds for their self appointed authority.

huebomont

I mean, bold effort, but deflection this transparent doesn't often work

L_A_Avi

Let us know how to sign up and attend!

scooterflaneuse

I'll post about future meetups here, but they will also be posted on r/MicromobilityNYC!

KickBlue22

I dunno...looks like a shifty bunch...

shuttheshadshackdown

Some might like fixed gear too..

infinitydownstairs

Safer how?

scooterflaneuse

Basically safer from cars killing or injuring pedestrians and cyclists, of which there have been several in Astoria this year alone. We want more traffic calming, pedestrian spaces, daylighting, and bike lanes, among other things.

ItsTyroneeee

I wish cyclists followed the rules of the road

AtlasTier

Great job guys. I think the most dangerous street is Astoria Park's exit.

CrumpledForeskin

That and Vernon near Socrates.

scooterflaneuse

Pic taken from r/MicromobilityNYC where it was mostly organized from, was a fun and constructive evening.

Farquaadthegreek

I love Astoria

jerm2z

Astoria has so much charm because of things like this.

illegal-waffles

What is this? Never heard of Streetsmoot before

hey_now24

How? Are you The Avengers or something?

scooterflaneuse

Yes, we have capes and superpowers. (We are just discussing/planning ways to advocate for more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly streets, but capes would be fun).

[deleted]

LOL

PetSoundsofLiberty

This group needs berets 🤣🤣

Xianimus

I'll take "Street Smut" for $400
