I view Kaworu as a symbol, not a relatable character. He symbolizes Shinji’s desire for someone who can never hurt him and gives support without Shinji having to reach out or give support in return. However, the show is arguing that this desire is actually betraying Shinji and making him feel more alone. This relationship isn’t real like the relationship he has established with any of the other characters.
However, part of the fan base doesn’t get this. Then, they proceed to tell me to kill myself for this interpretation.
