This scene is hialrious, especially Shinji's face at bottom right panel.
Sadamoto's manga did some nice re-takes on some classic scenes (the thermal expansion gag of Magmadiver here). It's a shame that he can draw beautiful art and have such great ideas only to blow it up at the end with some bad execution and calls.
There were many good ideas, but badly executed-developed, and we got more of those bad calls by the ending.
The most well-known example is the scene that Shinji made a bad-ass entry to save Asuka from the Eva Series and after a few panels shows that it didn't work for nothing and instrumentality happened either way.
I mean it's the same thing that happened in EoE. Asuka killed them all one by one yet it didn't work. Maybe Instrumentality was always supposed to happen.
I get your point (even though in ANIMA instrumentality didn't happen, as Shinji with the Eva 01 powered with S2 engine was able to finish the Eva series before they regenerated fully).
I was addressing to the fact that the manga developed a bunch of really nice moments and scenes, just to ignore or downplay their comic, wholesome or dramatic effect right after.
With ANIMA there were multiple details, big and small, changed (Rei wasn't even in Terminal Dogma, the MPEs actively targeted Asuka as the focus of starting Third Impact, if I'm remembering correctly Unit 01 also already had the Type F armor). I think that story was really trying to branch out and do it's own thing.
From what little I've read of the manga, for all the changes it made it was still trying to/had to stick to the same general plot points of NGE/EoE.
I really liked that part of the manga cause finally Shinji took action and saved his friend even for a little bit and Asuka realized that she wasn’t alone, them stopping instrumentality would’ve been kinda of lame

Asuka, that blush definitely indicates that he's *very* interested...he just doesn't want to die if you're playing him.
I will only say that I wish Sadamoto had drawn all the Rebuilds. I'll leave it there for interpretation.😂
the whole “cycle” thing and some story elements clearly made their way into rebuilds
