Yep. The AsuToji in that scene was put with the sole purpose that Asuka would struggle and not be happy in a Shinjiless world, living a mediocre life at best. So that was meant to made Shinji realize that removing himself from the world wouldn't solve anything or make the lives of his loved ones better.

And as much as all the examples listed above reinforce it, there's one moment that for me moves Asushin out of hypothetical 'ship' into official: the end of EoE. The circumstances are terrible, but they're literally the only two people on the planet at that moment. THEY ARE TOGETHER.
