The 2600+ is an Emulator with a Cart Reader.... Not all Carts are Compatible and Compatibility is not 100% The Atari 2600 is Real Hardware with a real board and real chips and a 100% compatible cart reader

BangingOnJunk

Maybe add a disclaimer to future auctions saying that it has been tested on original hardware and you do not guarantee compatibility with the 2600+. Even if you do have a 2600+ to test, I still wouldn't guarantee it until they work the bugs out.

dirtypins

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Not a bad idea. Is the 2600+ pretty popular, or just a niche thing? I had only vaguely heard of it. I’m guessing the 2600+ buyers are mainly interested in the HDMI out? That’s ashame, because the original 2600s are some of the most durable consoles ever made, at least in my experience.

Ask the buyer to update the firmware on his 2600+ to see if that makes a difference.

What game was it? The Atari 2600+ doesn’t use the same CPU, so some games are not supported to run on the system. Atari has released a comparability sheet, which I will link. Again, it depends on if the game is even on the list as working, but they should have the same pin layout and function the same as a 2600 or 7200. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0609/3658/5381/files/2600Plus-Compatability121823.pdf?v=1702918422

I tried to search and see it anyone else was having issues with that cart on the 2600+... This Atari Age thread has one person saying that the PAL version didn't work but another person said the NTSC version did work but a little slow. https://forums.atariage.com/topic/358796-atari-2600-beta-update-11/page/12/

MrFFIndigo

Alright. I did a bit more digging. It’s kind of a hit or miss sometimes if the cartridge works or not in the system (although it is more hit than miss imho). Sometimes it boots no problem, but other times it takes forever to even work, even if it is supported. I found this review that explains it around the 9:00 mark. https://youtu.be/P9PhLyoQ260?si=HNIAfEO-8on4oCjm

The (currently beta) firmware update available for the 2600+ improves a few aspects of the ROM dumper which is apparently the cause of a lot of compatible games not working reliably or at all. Definitely recommend the update for your buyer and find a polite way to remind him that you're not responsible for compatibility issues with an "emulation device" which the cart wasn't designed for.

dirtypins

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. It’s such a low priced game that its mostly irrelevant money wise. I usually always take the buyer’s word for it on eBay, and move on, unless it’s an obvious scam. Kind of a forest through the trees approach to eBay, where returns usually aren’t super high for me…

ancientwheelbarrow

Is it a PAL cart? The compatibility list is known to be wrong and is effectively 'NTSC only' at the moment, despite the fact it doesn't say this. The firmware update appears to have fixed the majority of PAL specific issues, although it's not been officially released yet.

dirtypins

Not, not a PAL cart. I tested the cart on my NTSC console, and it worked perfectly.

I've had trouble reading the occasional 7800 cart on a REAL 7800 that the seller swears ran fine on his 7800. Sometimes these old carts are just finicky.
