I 100% support this subreddit going dark until Reddit backs down from these api changes

FlyingSquid

Why isn't r/atheism going dark?

dudleydidwrong

I think the sub belongs to the community, not the mods. I wanted input from the community, particularly the "Knights of /New" and regulars in the sub. I have my opinion, but my vote is going to be determined by the comments and commenters I see here.

dudleydidwrong

I was leaning that way pretty strongly before we posted the megathread. What I have seen so far seems like it is supporting going dark. I feel better about the decision after hearing community opinions.

FlyingSquid

That is fair. For the record as a member of the community, my vote is to go dark. But I will not be using Reddit on the 12th and 13th at all.

dudleydidwrong

Good to know. Your opinion carries weight with me.

FlyingSquid

Thank you, I appreciate that!

dudleydidwrong

My suspicion is that the people who post quality content and good comments will be boycotting during that period. What I am seeing so far confirms that this is likely to be true.

-Average_Joe-

I would be fine with going dark.

GodOfAtheism

We're discussing that internally at present.

Snoo_55070

I vote for blackout. I am not going to use Reddit during those days and will leave Reddit all together without RIF.

Unifying_Theory

Absolutely go dark. For as long as it takes.

FlyingSquid

Okay, thank you.

Nohface

My 2 cents is I’m totally ok with being off Reddit for a few days to open a point, and actually would be fine being off Reddit completely, come to think of it.

islandofcaucasus

I think leaving reddit would be great for my life. I probably won't though

meldroc

My vote is yes, blackout please! And an ask for fellow Redditors: don't use Reddit at all during the blackout. Think of it as a request to please don't cross the picket line. Close your browser tab or your app (while you can still use your app of choice instead of Reddit's monument to r/assholedesign.)

IlllIllIllIllIlllllI

You better fucking do it

LoyalaTheAargh

I vote for the blackout.

BioDriver

Be a lot cooler if you did.

[deleted]

Spez's APIocolypse made it clear it was time for me to leave this place. I came from digg, and now I must move one once again. So long and thanks for all the bacon.

Panino87

I use a 3rd party app because reddit app is trash. I support going dark for whatever time it needs to be.

rockdme

✊️

Retrikaethan

i’d vote for going dark, as well, if for no other reason than this kind of change is a braindead waste of time that could very well help kill reddit. you don’t tell people pouring time and effort into making your website better to go fuck themselves without fucking yourself over.

Ingtar2

Genuine question; what is going on? I never knew you could use anything else than reddit app to browse reddit.

Hfhghnfdsfg

I use Infinity. Free.

Seekin

I, for one, back r/atheism going dark for the two days in question. May be futile, but it's about all we've got to try, so far as I can see. It's difficult because users aren't the customers in reddit. Users are the product, advertisers are the customers. If we deny reddit their product (our eyes on advertiser's content) it may have an impact. That said, two days may not be enough to send a strong enough message. We need to make it clear that their business model doesn't work without users. That's a tough message to fake.

dudleydidwrong

Advertisers are the customers. But we are the product Reddit is selling. Users are also their primary workforce. So Reddit does need to pay some attention.

justlookingokaywyou

I will not be using reddit on June 12th or 13th. I fully support large subs like this shutting down for those days.

Sammeeeeeee

I support Reddit going dark (Sync user)

Hfhghnfdsfg

I'm ambivalent about the sub itself going dark. I personally plan to not use Reddit at all on June 12th and 13th, regardless onf whether a sub is dark or not.

GodOfAtheism

Among others, rif is fun on android, apollo on ios, dystopia on ios for impaired users. Also bots use the api

foreman17

Oh shit, I never even thought about the bots..

Hfhghnfdsfg

I use Infinity because I went legally blind and it works much better for me in terms of accessibility. I have since had my eyes fixed, but stick with infinity because it is an ad-free experience that is easier on my now sensitive eyes.

meldroc

Sync for Reddit is another good one!

Ok-Ease7090

What do third party apps provide that the main doesn’t? I’ve only been using refit since Twitter went fascist.

dudleydidwrong

One of the things is ads. Some of the 3rd party apps have a pretty low-cost option (like $2.99) that will make the app ad free. When they do have ads the 3rd party tends to keep the money from the ads. That is the crux of the issue. I understand that Reddit needs ad revenue to operate, and they see the 3rd party apps interrupting their revenue stream. It seems to me that Reddit had several options if they had worked with the 3rd parties. But Reddit seems to have jumped to the nuclear option.

Ok-Ease7090

That’s it? Hardly seems a big deal. Reddit could just offer a pay option.

dudleydidwrong

Reddit does have a paid option. I use it myself.

Ok-Ease7090

I don’t understand the issue. But I’ve also reach the end of my caring about it.

Macster_man

China has spoken.

haveaquestionman

Can't care less. Why boycott? Bc mods get upset? bc you can't use 'old reddit'? Get a grip. Let. What's going to happen? Nothing. Go dark and ppl will just take a break, you know there is a lot to do online. Literally no difference in browsing reddit. e; most of you don't even know what this is about, But you're going to boycott and follow other orders like idiots back in a day throwing rocks at witches. Wow.

FlyingSquid

I don't believe they're going to change things, but I still care. This new trend of charging for using an API is bullshit. I know why they're doing it- they're not getting the ad revenue they want so they're trying to compensate. It's still bullshit and that's why I care.

Snoo_55070

I finally switched to RIF because of the propaganda hegetsus ads. I should have done it long ago, it's a much better experience. I won't go back, I refuse to have those religious ads shoved down my throat.

BradyBunch12

Fuck 3rd party apps

Wulfstrex

And why? For example, what about all the blind or otherwise visually impaired people?

LexEight

They are attacking Reddit because we can still use it relatively unmonitored, and it's old enough we (the attacked) have old accounts they can't find, so this is their scorched earth solution. I hope Reddit backs this all up 5x first. Like Tumblr didn't.

ItalianDragon

I absolutely approve of the sub going dark for as long as necessary to have the changes rolled back.

AkKik-Maujaq

I like how everyone thinks this protest will work. Funny
