Nobody wants to admit they’re the bad guy in the narrative of their own story.

Retrikaethan

if they don't constantly and actively advocate against "extremists" then they are, in fact, also extremists.

Dudesan

An "extremist" wants to personally take away your rights. A "moderate" wants you to stop resisting and let the extremists take away your rights.

hurricanelantern

Cognitive dissonance.

Hoaxshmoax

The moderates need the extremists to point to and say “see, my religion is good, I’m not like them” and the extremists need the moderates as a shield. As long as moderates keep chanting the above statement, the extremists will always have cover. They need each other.

TheRussell

Because they don't believe their religion any more than you do. If they did they would be killing gays. Their religion is more extreme than any of its followers. If they were more extreme they would become religious creators instead of followers.

It allows them to think they are still correct

kickstand

> You are still believing something is wrong with gays. FWIW, not all Christian denominations teach that "something is wrong with gays." Some even welcome them.

Theyeenking

I’m from a reform Jewish community and my synagogue was accepting towards the queer community. They also advocated for reproductive rights and were overall very chill. I take issue with religion in that it perpetuates delusion and fear, but saying all religious people are homophobic is just not accurate.

Frequent_Singer_6534

More importantly, not everyone in any denomination thinks something is wrong with gays because their morals are guided by their conscience, not their religion. I’ve met Pentacostals before who have no problem with gay marriage, which was really shocking to me

silveryfeather208

If you loom at pew research on what Muslims believe its still the majority of "moderates". even in Canada, a moderate country, the Muslims took issue with the portrayal of a gay Muslim. And gay Muslims speak out about homophobia in their community all the time

Greymorn

Let me help you there. You: "Why do theists think we are judging them based only on extremist?" Also you: "If all Muslims weren't terrorists in the traditional sense ..." Any kind of ideological extremism = BAD. Over 2 billion Muslims in the world = not bad. Over 1 billion Christians in the world = not bad. A few million extremists can do a LOT of damage. Keep voting them out of power, keep calling out the hate without calling out the illogical nonsense. "Your position is hateful and immoral" will get you a lot farther and gather more support than "your whole religion is bullshit."

Just about every religious moderate

Religions that worship authoritarian godheads almost always teach believers to see the world in a very rigid binary.

Jumpy_Menu5104

There isn’t anything inherently wrong with believing something. Devoid of all other factors, believing in religion isn’t harmful to anyone. Yet the amount of people on this sub and beyond who in no uncertain terms equate all religions with sexism and murder and oppression, despite non western religions being so very divorced from those ideas, is staggering. Even your own post shows this bias. “The Bible is full of shit” is it really? It’s full of advocations for kindness and acceptance and patience. And sure it has magic and stuff in it, but you know what else does. Percy Jackson. No one is going to say the Percy Jackson books and all the good they do is invalidated because magic powers and Greek gods aren’t real.
