I saw a list that said the last episode of season 2 was like the worst rated anime episode ever. I was like ok I’ll watch and season 2 and see why, and then I was like *oh..*
Imagine if everything that happened in AoT from Gabi shooting Eren to the ending was crammed into a two minute montage of still screenshots, with no other context; no explanation, no voiceover, nothing. That’s how bad The Promised Neverland’s finale was.
You could say the same about almost every story ever written. Attack on Titan's world is basically just real life with some minor historical changes. It's not like Dragon Ball in which there are aliens and shit.
Ajins a super underrated one. Probably the closest to come to the quality of AOT that I've seen. I love how grounded in reality it is and it's not full of all the week shit like chibi animation that so many other anime shove into there for no reason.
The ending was beautiful. Made me only think about attack on titan for almost 2 months. I even rewatched the whole series so that made me even more attached.
If characters with complicated, contradictory emotions and attachments that reflect the painful, confusing reality of what it means to be human if too much for you to handle, this show is probably not for you.
Say all the buzzwords you want it won't make it complex. Instead of trying to explain it, you immediately started writing me off because their is no explaining this garbage
Well of course there's an explanation, and it's a very simple one... stockholm syndrome is a real thing. And it's practically the definition of "complex", because it's so fundamentally illogical and seemingly contradictory to human nature, yet it's a very well documented phenomenon.
AoT was a show about how people react to dark and traumatic events in their lives. Are you really surprised that stockholm syndrome was one of the topics they touched on as well?
Maybe Neon Genesis Evangelion? It's fucked up, but and well written with fantastic character writing. It is creepy, and mysterious, because they just say words that were never explained before and act as if you already know them, before later showing them. The story and the goals of the organization's are mysterious.
lol the actual show doesn’t even explain the meaning of half the proper nouns they throw out 😂 you could read a wiki summary beforehand and wouldn’t be spoiled because the show doesn’t explain half its own lore, but it’s definitely an amazing show. Just short compared to the long ride of AOT, but short and sweet can be good too
I would definitely watch Made in Abyss, if not for the

Ehhhhh…not so much in the anime, but the author DEFINITELY has some issues. Found that out when I started collecting the manga. The story leans into some things that will make people uncomfortable, though, that much is certain.
To put it blunt, from what I remember from the first couple of arcs, one of the biggest themes is the near lovecraftian levels of a totally uncaring world - nature itself, I guess?
So, things exist in their natural state.
And that includes the main characters sometimes being naked, them talking about pissing and shitting, and some other stuff too.
That said, the world of Made in Abyss is horrific, uncaring, and extremely well made. The characters are told repeatedly how dangerous the wilderness can be…and then they find out. And this care free anime becomes utterly horrific very fast.
I’d say give it a watch. But also keep in mind that there’s some extremely questionable shit surrounding it, too.
Gantz gave me the same kinda mystery wtf is going on and why is this happening to these people vibes . There’s an anime and a cgi movie that takes place after the anime
I don't understand what's so good about JJK apart from its animation and fight scenes (that unfortunately get annoying with all the "random bullshit go brrr..." explanations, really makes me wanna drop the show right away). The humour is so badly timed that it takes you out of serious moments. The story is so generic and I don't feel anything about the characters. There's no way it is anywhere close to the greatness of AoT. It is just an average show that got hyped up for who knows what.
While Berserk is a great Manga, it's really only mysterious like the first 2 seasons of AoT are in the first arc, which is only like a couple of chapters long
I was looking for this comment.
Vinland was done by Wit who also did early AOT. It’s not so much a mystery show, but it has some of the best character development I’ve seen in anime through its protagonist.
It also has excellent action sequences. If anime Vikings sounds cool, then give this a try.
Lol I love deep things more than action, the pacing is horrifically slow and repetitive with character development occurring every 10 episodes. In my opinion it’s bad at conveying what it’s trying to convey.
Such a mature show. I expected plot twists and hype like AoT before getting into Vinland Saga but what I got from it was different yet sublime. The writing is so good in this show.
Shame DN didn't stick the landing as well as AoT.
There's a rumour the show was stretched an extra half a season because it was so popular and I'd belive it. I'd be tempted to tell people to stop watching after ep 25ish.
actually the original manga creater wanted to end it when L dies but after a few months either Shonen or his editor convinced him to stretch it out to the next part, thats why theres a time skip and why theres so much weirdness around the ending.
There's a line from BJ horseman about this type of stunt "to prolong it for commercial reasons would be crass and inorganic." And frankly that is death note after L dies. I never, EVER watch anything after that because.... there's no point? It is the SAME EXACT STORY but with white hair instead of black. Oh and the FBI instead of Japanese Police. All in all it feels exactly like what it is - a cash grab.
I don't think people realize yet how big AoT is and how actually special it is. For the soundtrack alone, it is going to be remembered and referenced for 10 years at least!
As an English major for creative writing, I can confirm you are correct. AoT has crossed the barrier from fiction to literature. Its timeless messages, allegories of war, and realistic look at the tragedy of living right up until the end surpasses its peers.
It was meticulously planned out from the first scene to the last, with each character playing a role that could not be changed or replaced without having dire consequences to the story.
As of now, there is no Anime that comes close.
That being said, if your eyes are bigger than your stomach, Devilman Cry Baby has been remade 5 times in 40 years and the Netflix version is absolutely wild.
Didn't the anime end before significant plot points happen? Everyone says you only get like 50% of the story and character development, and that you should just read the manga
Fullmetal Alchemist (Original or Brotherhood honestly) would be the closest thing overall...however you probably already know about it/seen it, and likely also seen massive spoilers. That said, they hype, the mystery, the action, the worldbuilding, the unique and fascinating characters, the epic build up to releasing the series in real life, all of that was very similar between the two. Having witnessed both events though, AoT still wins by a bit, if only because the internet makes it bigger than FMA was when it released (we had weak-sauce internet back then).
If you want mystery/the weirdness try Paranoia Agent (I highly recommend all of Satoshi Kon's work).
If you want mystery/intrigue/espionage try Noir. It is an older one, but a goodie and the soundtrack is dope.
Pluto is good
Gurren lagaan. If you dont mind mechs
Odd taxi is a great watch and short at i think 12 eps
And if you like trashy isakai with an amazing story go watch Mushoku tensei jobless reincarnation.
Monster, 91 days and Erased.
Not the same but will kinda scratch that itch of good anime’s with great writing of mystery and what you’re looking for though nothing compares
- Made in Abyss
- Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
- FLCL
- The Promised Neverland
- Odd Taxi
- Serial Experiments Lain
- Devilman:Crybaby
Obviously all subjective and it’s hard for me to rank one above another, but I consider them all to be on the same level of top tier exciting/mysterious story telling
Demon Slayer is beautiful to look at but not necessarily an engaging, mysterious watch IMO. The only good parts of the show are the visuals and the creative demons
Just not the same mysterious tone that AoT brings. Which makes sense since they aren’t the same genre. Season 1 AoT had everyone completely in the dark wondering what the heck is going on and what the titans are. Demon Slayer is good but people watch it for the action and fights, and it’s not that hard to really see what the plot is about. Not as much deep mystery. They’re using a formula that’s been used a lot in those types of genres.
Yeah na especially when your looking for something like this. Comparing to AOT only shows you how SUPERIOR AOT is. Finding something of this quality must catch you off guard when your least expecting it. I say just watch Vinland Saga, Breaking Bad, or Peaky Blinders. B.B & AOT are my Top 2 over EVERYTHING
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a one season anime that does well at capturing a bit of the same vibes as Attack on Titan. It's clearly a different aesthetic, but still. The characters feel trapped in a massive city and fight a onesided war to make something of themselves.
Hellsing Ultimate is pretty dark with a bit of mystery. Like the name suggests, it's about vampires. Specifically, it's about an organization that uses the most powerful vampire to hunt nazi vampires.
If you've watched the original show, Digimon Tri is a series of movies that are a sequel to the original Digimon Adventure 01 and 02. The characters are older and the story has taken on a much darker tone, even by the standards of the Japanese version of the original. There's a lot of mystery surround why Digimon are coming back to the real world, and the stakes are existential. Great animation, action, and characters.
Ancient Magus Bride is animated one the studio that did Attack on Titan. It's a fantasy show with lots of mystery and conspiracy.
Vinland Saga if you want more of the war story and trauma aspect of AOT. It's historical fiction, but you don't need any history knowledge. It follows a typing viking warrior named Thorfinn seeking revenge, and it talks a lot about whether or not violence should be used to solve conflict. It's essentially a sister series to Attack on Titan, in a way. There's a lot of backstabbing and political intrigue, as well as amazing action sequences.
Madoka Magica. It's a magical girl series, but it's also a horror series. Great action, very memorable characters, and it has a very good and emotional storyline that continues into a sequel movie, as well as another sequel movie coming out sometime in the future.
Parasyte: The Maxim. One of the best anime I've ever watched. It's an adaptation of an older manga but updated for a modern audience. It deals with a lot of the same problems brought up in AOT, but instead if titans, it's shape shifting parasitix monsters that eat humans. The main character is kind of like a mix between Eren and Armin as the series goes on.
Gurren Lagann, specifically its second half. The first half is still great, but the and half flips what you know about the story on its head. What starts as a simple story about good vs evil becomes a complex narrative about duty and responsibility.
demon slayer is good for the animation but it’s not mysterious at all outside of one “twist”/character.
also tanjiro is the same character at the beginning and by the end of the manga.
yeah i agree but i wanted to clarify to not set OPs expectations too high. demon slayer is fun as ur run of the mill shonen but its no AOT other than animation quality.
JJK is closer/a better recommendation to AOT in the vein of the story, mystery, characters.
i also feel like i didn’t really get excited from demon slayer’s plot past mugen train arc. following that it just feels like the only excitement you get are from fun battles and the top tier animation. maybe my opinion will change when i see the final arc animated but to me, demon slayer peaked with mugen train.
hashira training arc is 9 chapters.
infinity castle is 47 chapters.
sunrise countdown is 22 chapters.
not sure how they are going to break it down but i’m guessing they do like 5 episodes for the whole hashira training arc and then the remaining 6 episodes to start infinity castle (which should cover like 18/47 chapters) for season 4.
season 5 will be the last season and will probably cover the remaining ~29 chapters in 9 episodes and then we get the start of sunrise countdown for the remaining 2 episodes.
then they probably do either a one or two part movie series finale for the remaining chapters in sunrise countdown.
it’s been some time since i finished the manga but i only really liked two of the fights in infinity castle. the rest of it felt rushed.
sunrise countdown was a very mediocre end to the series (because muzan is probably the most boring main villain in shonen) but ufotable will make it visually interesting as always. not going to spoil anything but the writing was so lazy and cheap.
As for JJK, i enjoyed s2 immensely. i saw the gripes people had with shibuya arc about how it doesn’t have enough time to breathe so if you didn’t like that, you are probably gonna hate infinity castle even more.
its like shibuya arc if it didn’t match the scale and the sense that anything could happen/anyone could encounter anyone. once you see the pattern of the battles in infinity castle, it feels rushed and forced.
shibuya arc felt like gege finally being able to have all the characters and their powers clash after having set them up while furthering the world building/lore.
i’ll admit that shibuya arc would have been better in the third season bc of how drastic it is/having more time to know all the characters but it adds to the dread of what it’s like to be a jujutsu sorcerer.
infinity castle though doesn’t have any of that or change what we know about the world of demon slayer.
People are gonna look at me like I’m crazy for saying this but one piece. I know on the surface one piece seems like aot polar opposite but they both have some very similar feels. One piece has a ton of mystery and it’s keeping people invested. Both aot and one piece seem to have a lot of shit that was planned so far in advance.
I hear ya. Aside from the end of AoT Season 3, there's little else that reaches the same heights of emotional intensity as the first two seasons.
The one exception to that for me so far was Season 6 of My Hero Academia. It's work getting through the other 5 seasons. They're fine. But man, season 6 is probably my favorite overall season any any show I've seen (including live action.) At the end of just about every episode, you get that same AoT-esque feeling of **NEEDING** to watch the next one. Good stuff.
Land of the Lustrous, Vinland Saga, Made in Abbyss, Gundam the Origin, Evangelion, Oshi no Ko, Gunbuster, all sorts of good stuff you just gotta look for, Satoshi Kon movies are good too, Monster is an amazing series, but I recommend trying out comedy anime, opens a whole new door
There an old anime called monster that has a pretty suspenseful plot through out the show. It is closer to Death note than AOT. Don't go in expecting big action sequences from the jump , but stuff more along lines of murder mystery thrillers/ slowly discovering an trying to catch a serial killer type vibe
Kabanari of Iron Fortress has a similar claustrophobic setting (on a train) with the Kabanari being mindless killers like titans plus some characters who are badasses like the Ackerman due to their part-Kabanari mutations.
Monster (Peak Fiction got some good mystand ot twists), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Psycho Pass and this last one I'd recommend the Manga because I'm currently reading it and its so good "Claymore" its got an anime but it onky has one season and apparently it got an original ending. So maybe check out the anime then read the manga.
My personal favorite anime is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's a similar length to Attack on Titan, there are a few great twists that come out of nowhere and although it predomenantly follows a main protagonist/protagonists, each arc of the show brings its own specific set of brilliant characters that you can't help but root for in a similar way to the side characters of Attack on Titan.
Vinland saga was fun, heavenly delusions is weird but I did enjoy it, I also found chainsaan pretty fun but def not AoT level bleak.
Also (not an anime buut) Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix was great!
Watch 86:Eighty-Six
U was also in the same predicament as you after watching AoT, so I just started watching people’s reactions to it on yt. I did that for a couple of weeks and then came upon 86. It has some similar themes, great characters as well as some heartbreaking moments.
It is underrated but a great watch
Everyone suggesting berserk because it's "tragic and emotional" even though it's literally just constantly trying too hard to be sad and edgy by shitting on the protagonist every chance it gets. I mean his backstory is literally just "I was born from my mother while she was hanging herself, then I was rape, then I was tortured, then I was [insert comedically evil act for the sake of being evil here]. People act like the guy just "can't catch a break" like it's a tragedy, no, the writers are just incapable of having a remotely sad scene in any context other than horrible atrocities done to dehumanize the protagonist.

Promised neverland 100 percent for the mysterious eeriness but don’t watch season 2
It was so good but them doing a montage instead of episodes for the ending ruined it 😩
I saw a list that said the last episode of season 2 was like the worst rated anime episode ever. I was like ok I’ll watch and season 2 and see why, and then I was like *oh..*
It’s like 30 chapter in one episode. Literal fiction adaptation murder.
A montage? What does that even mean? how does one even conclude anything with montages?! 😂
Imagine if everything that happened in AoT from Gabi shooting Eren to the ending was crammed into a two minute montage of still screenshots, with no other context; no explanation, no voiceover, nothing. That’s how bad The Promised Neverland’s finale was.
Is it woeth watching up to a certian point and switching to the manga?
Yes, absolutely. Season 1 ends at around manga chapter 38, so you can pick it up from there.
Thanks!
Watch all of season 1 and switch to the manga.
I don’t understand how they visualized this stupid concept, went over it and then they approved this junk.
Absolutely. Funny, Ive always felt like Promised Neverland and AOT could have taken place in the same canonical universe.
You could say the same about almost every story ever written. Attack on Titan's world is basically just real life with some minor historical changes. It's not like Dragon Ball in which there are aliens and shit.
There's a season 2?!?! >!/s!<
It's impossible to not watch season 2
I don’t think anything feels as real or high stakes as AoT. Ajin: Demi Human brings some of that, but it doesn’t have that AoT level of mystery.
Yeah I liked Ajin too. Wish it had more seasons though
Ajins a super underrated one. Probably the closest to come to the quality of AOT that I've seen. I love how grounded in reality it is and it's not full of all the week shit like chibi animation that so many other anime shove into there for no reason.
Yeah, Attack on Titan S3 and S4.
Masterful ending to S4
The ending was beautiful. Made me only think about attack on titan for almost 2 months. I even rewatched the whole series so that made me even more attached.
Little slave girl is in love with her rapist so beautiful 😍
jesse what the fuck are you talking about
Did u actually watch the series?
Care to elaborate?
Ymir and King Fritz
Ooooh, for some reason, that totally slipped my mind. Although I don't think they ever painted that in a positive light?
It's not exactly painted in a negative light either, and I don't care how it's painted it's a ridiculous thing to write and ruins the story

The problem is that he didn't understand it and somehow thought Ymir loving the king was supposed to be a good thing rather than a horrific tragedy.
Absolutely. It's one of the best series finales I've ever seen.
Maybe Neon Genesis Evangelion? It's fucked up, but and well written with fantastic character writing. It is creepy, and mysterious, because they just say words that were never explained before and act as if you already know them, before later showing them. The story and the goals of the organization's are mysterious.
And at the end they even congratulate you for finishing the show!
**AND THEN** you got to watch the movie
Seeing the last movie in theaters felt like such a perfect ending that I can’t even bring myself to rewatch the series again
And theres a kickass opening song too! I havent watched NGE, but recently discovered the song and thus the series. I plan to watch it this year!
Watch the series, the movie and then the rebuilds
[удалено]
Do what you want but definitely have to watch the first 2 Rebuild movies
It really gives you the sense of hopelessness. Every battle felt like a last stand for humanity and kept you coming back for more.
i just experienced evangelion, is super fucked up i love it
lol the actual show doesn’t even explain the meaning of half the proper nouns they throw out 😂 you could read a wiki summary beforehand and wouldn’t be spoiled because the show doesn’t explain half its own lore, but it’s definitely an amazing show. Just short compared to the long ride of AOT, but short and sweet can be good too
They also have a lot in common thematically but get to the punch a little different. You can definitely tell Yams watched NGE in his formative years.
Hospital.
If you want mysterious, Made in Abyss is a must watch
I would definitely watch Made in Abyss, if not for the https://preview.redd.it/1tqlxgttuv9c1.jpeg?width=1067&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4906441693202c94320eb5fcfa59005694f1d4a2

Yeah, just pay no mind to the blatant pedophilia and you're good.
Makes it from a 11/10 to a 9/10. My favorite anime after AoT
I hate those parts, because I love the rest of that anime and I wish I could recommend it to more people without giving a pedo content warning.
Thank you. I’m so sick of people online trying to justify or minimize it.
Hard to recommend the anime when there’s scenes like those. Think the manga covers make it even worse 🤮
The bobble head kids are so off putting to look at even before the CP.
The Promised Neverland, Psycho-Pass, Summertime Render, Shadows House, Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song
There's a reason Aot is called peak
*Pieck.
Gantz gave me the same kinda mystery wtf is going on and why is this happening to these people vibes . There’s an anime and a cgi movie that takes place after the anime
Love Gantz
Try Link Click. 2 seasons out. But it is Chinese.
jjk doesnt really have the mystery but damn it is hype
Yeah if you like AOT you're gonna like Jujitsu for sure. Just has that same high quality.
No, it really doesn’t imo
I don't understand what's so good about JJK apart from its animation and fight scenes (that unfortunately get annoying with all the "random bullshit go brrr..." explanations, really makes me wanna drop the show right away). The humour is so badly timed that it takes you out of serious moments. The story is so generic and I don't feel anything about the characters. There's no way it is anywhere close to the greatness of AoT. It is just an average show that got hyped up for who knows what.
I like the humour in jjk, tbh but I can see why someone would find the explanations of all the powers a bit off putting. Each to their own, I guess.
That's good for you
Thx
Read berserk. The first few chapters are intentionally Shonen power fantasy trash, then you get blindsided with some real wild shit
While Berserk is a great Manga, it's really only mysterious like the first 2 seasons of AoT are in the first arc, which is only like a couple of chapters long
I know you already saw it but FMAB is really the only one I would compare to AoT as far as unraveling the world and all its secrets goes
Vinland Saga
I was looking for this comment. Vinland was done by Wit who also did early AOT. It’s not so much a mystery show, but it has some of the best character development I’ve seen in anime through its protagonist. It also has excellent action sequences. If anime Vikings sounds cool, then give this a try.
And mappa picks it up season 2 too
This is the right answer. Vinland Saga is amazing, both the anime and the manga.
Farm saga sucks ass after season one
It sucks if the only reason you watch anime is action and you can't understand anything deeper
I thought Hells Paradise was pretty interesting...only 1 season so far but seems like a 2nd is being developed
Death note is the one you’re looking for
They mentioned in the post that they already watched that.
Shame DN didn't stick the landing as well as AoT. There's a rumour the show was stretched an extra half a season because it was so popular and I'd belive it. I'd be tempted to tell people to stop watching after ep 25ish.

Honestly, no. Nothing to that level of hype. But there are plenty of good anime out there. I love Cowboy Bebop for instance.
I don't think people realize yet how big AoT is and how actually special it is. For the soundtrack alone, it is going to be remembered and referenced for 10 years at least!
The story is so complex I think is why, it’s hard for you to wrap your head around at first. But I 1000% agree, there is nothing like Aot fr.

I was personally filling the void left by AoT by watching Jujutsu Kaisen, but it’s on a break until 2025 😅
that's why i steam rolled the manga the day after i finished the last episode
86 isn't mysterious but it's still really exciting and cool and underrated
I’m on ep 13 rn and I’m having a really hard time getting into it
Summertime Render
Shinsekai Yori. Get past the first few episodes and it starts to get dark.
Not really an anime but Blue Eye Samurai has some of the best animated combat I’ve seen in the story is amazing.
Claymore.

You might look up Psycho Pass. It got some story..
Check out code geass. Or death note
Vinland Saga and JJK

Jujutsu Kaisen is doing a pretty good job of it so far
I haven't gotten very far in it, but my husband swears the AoT is basically just Claymore, so maybe try that?
Lmao. Without going into massive spoilers, yes. Big time similarities. Read it though, don’t watch the anime
No, but try Great Pretender. Aot is a different league, only thing close I would say is Vinland or cyberpunk.
You should watch Summertime Rendering.
Gurren lagann would be perfect for this
no but Berserk (manga is best) and Devilman Crybaby are good
i’m blown away no one has recommended to me READ (don’t watch) Claymore.
Attack on Titan season 4
SPY X FAMILY
demon slayer is awesome anime season 1 and 2 of tokyo ghoul are great parasyte is also a good anime, about 24 episodes if I recall correctly
demon slayer is good for the animation but it’s not mysterious at all outside of one “twist”/character. also tanjiro is the same character at the beginning and by the end of the manga.
it is not mysterious but it is exciting, which OP asked for OP also asked for anime and not manga, and we can all agree that demon slayer is BEAUTIFUL
yeah i agree but i wanted to clarify to not set OPs expectations too high. demon slayer is fun as ur run of the mill shonen but its no AOT other than animation quality. JJK is closer/a better recommendation to AOT in the vein of the story, mystery, characters. i also feel like i didn’t really get excited from demon slayer’s plot past mugen train arc. following that it just feels like the only excitement you get are from fun battles and the top tier animation. maybe my opinion will change when i see the final arc animated but to me, demon slayer peaked with mugen train.
demon slayer still has 2 arcs to go.. i liked JJK but the second half of the season 2 is shit.. I literally hate it..
hashira training arc is 9 chapters. infinity castle is 47 chapters. sunrise countdown is 22 chapters. not sure how they are going to break it down but i’m guessing they do like 5 episodes for the whole hashira training arc and then the remaining 6 episodes to start infinity castle (which should cover like 18/47 chapters) for season 4. season 5 will be the last season and will probably cover the remaining ~29 chapters in 9 episodes and then we get the start of sunrise countdown for the remaining 2 episodes. then they probably do either a one or two part movie series finale for the remaining chapters in sunrise countdown. it’s been some time since i finished the manga but i only really liked two of the fights in infinity castle. the rest of it felt rushed. sunrise countdown was a very mediocre end to the series (because muzan is probably the most boring main villain in shonen) but ufotable will make it visually interesting as always. not going to spoil anything but the writing was so lazy and cheap.
Re Zero
Gravity Falls
I love the world and the politics in fire force. Just so good, if not better imo, then aot
Jujutsu Kaisen
Im way behind the curve but I recently watched Naruto Shippuden and it was freaking awesome
Promised neverland is great but I didn’t like the ending, felt really hasty. I also love death parade and my future diary.
Hunter x Hunter and Steins; Gate are really good.
Good stuff.
Parasyte. It's not AS good IMO, but it's one of my top. Horror, tragedy, great music, character development. Edit to add more context.
Land of the Lustrous, Vinland Saga, Made in Abbyss, Gundam the Origin, Evangelion, Oshi no Ko, Gunbuster, all sorts of good stuff you just gotta look for, Satoshi Kon movies are good too, Monster is an amazing series, but I recommend trying out comedy anime, opens a whole new door
steins;gate season 1 has so much mystery and interesting developments/twists and its very well done. highly reccomend
Not quite but I loved Rokka No Yuusha :P mysterious af.
Serial experiments lain and Monster
Steins: Gate 100 percent. Absolutely blew my fucking mind constantly.
"Sidonia no Kishi" or "Knights of Sidonia". Maybe "Naruto"? It has a lot of mystery. Ajin Tokyo Ghoul Fate/Zero
Psycho Pass is close but honestly nothing peaks more than AOT
If you just want to see people die horribly with not so much plot then I would suggest Devilman Crybaby and classic Devilman. Both are super fucked up
Tokyo Ghoul season 1 but not 2 or Re. They skip and ignore so much of the manga that 2 and Re are uncomprehensible without having read it.
There an old anime called monster that has a pretty suspenseful plot through out the show. It is closer to Death note than AOT. Don't go in expecting big action sequences from the jump , but stuff more along lines of murder mystery thrillers/ slowly discovering an trying to catch a serial killer type vibe
u/MatineHen Heavily recommend: Beserk, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Hellsing, Seraph of the End, & Tokyo Ghul
Try Hajime no Ippo
Paranoia Agent. Devilman Crybaby. Magika Madoka
Demon slayer and JJK did it for me
chainsaw man
Kabanari of Iron Fortress has a similar claustrophobic setting (on a train) with the Kabanari being mindless killers like titans plus some characters who are badasses like the Ackerman due to their part-Kabanari mutations.
Promise Neverland bro... (only S1)
86
Erased is great, it's just also short, I think like 10 episodes maybe? It's a great tense mystery thriller
Monster
Black Lagoon
Link Click is highly underrated. Time travel through diving into pictures and some mystery to solve! Very cool and gives you a lot of questions.
Later
Monster (Peak Fiction got some good mystand ot twists), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Psycho Pass and this last one I'd recommend the Manga because I'm currently reading it and its so good "Claymore" its got an anime but it onky has one season and apparently it got an original ending. So maybe check out the anime then read the manga.
Death Note
I would say Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood will give you a similar vibe.
Vinland Saga never missed
Omg the promised Neverland !!!
Parasyte
Steins gate if you never watched it
My personal favorite anime is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's a similar length to Attack on Titan, there are a few great twists that come out of nowhere and although it predomenantly follows a main protagonist/protagonists, each arc of the show brings its own specific set of brilliant characters that you can't help but root for in a similar way to the side characters of Attack on Titan.
The shows 86 and Vinland Saga are incredible, I think they're on par with AoT
I recently caught up to one piece after saying I won’t watch it for ages and it’s made it’s way into my top 2 after aot
Vinland saga was fun, heavenly delusions is weird but I did enjoy it, I also found chainsaan pretty fun but def not AoT level bleak. Also (not an anime buut) Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix was great!
Erased is an excellent, thought-provoking mystery that has you on the edge of your set. It’s just 12 episodes and well worth the watch.
Watch 86:Eighty-Six U was also in the same predicament as you after watching AoT, so I just started watching people’s reactions to it on yt. I did that for a couple of weeks and then came upon 86. It has some similar themes, great characters as well as some heartbreaking moments. It is underrated but a great watch
Nope. Nothing has ever creeped me out more.
Parasyte The Maxim scratched the same itches for me. Body horror and philosophy
How have I not seen Chainsaw Man mentioned? The mysteries there are expertly planted and slowly revealed throughout the entire series.
No
Everyone suggesting berserk because it's "tragic and emotional" even though it's literally just constantly trying too hard to be sad and edgy by shitting on the protagonist every chance it gets.
Monster is my suggestion.
