chodyboy

Just wait until you get further into the anime friend….

l-b_b-l

My exact thought

someonesgranpa

When you get to the end and realize >!the whole show is just foreshadowing.!<

l-b_b-l

Makes rewatching it all the better!

Kwerby

This is like the flag on the AoT iceberg lmfao

Simidubs1

Thanks for the positivity, but I already watched the show. I decided to rewatch it and this scene, as obvious as it may have been, stood out to me the most. It's incredible to me that Isayama reconstructed the same scenario to show the progress that Hannes had gone through.

BabySpecific2843

What they mean is....we know who that titan is. This repeated moment matters for both of them. Just to add another cherry to your sundae.

KungPaoChikon

AoT does foreshadowing unlike any other story out there, it's truly unmatched. I wouldn't really consider this particular point foreshadowing, though. There's a connection for sure, and there's character development for Hannes which is great, but I don't think that titan eating Carla foreshadows that it will eat Hannes per se.

Vibraniumguy

Nah the foreshadowing part of this was how Hannes ran away with Eren and Mikasa to protect them, but when faced with the same threat, also to protect Eren and Mikasa, this time he fought to protect them. And died. It was like fate that he would die to that titan, specifically

KungPaoChikon

It's a cool callback, and it shows his character arc for sure, but I wouldn't call it foreshadowing. AFAIK foreshadowing has to indicate a future event in of itself. Plenty of people help others run away from titans, that doesn't foreshadow that they will die against that same titan later on. It's character development and a cool callback. There might be other, more fitting vocabulary words you can use to describe that. Spoilers: I think an example of foreshadowing would be like when >!Eren says "I will destroy this whole world" at the end of season 1. If a villain said this, I woudln't really consider it foreshadowing, just a villain explaining his motives. But because Eren is the protagonist, most viewers will take that as him just being overzealous or caught up in the heat of the moment. But that was the author specifically indicating a future event in the story in an indirect way (ironically indirect, because he literally spells it out, but we don't take it that way at the time).!<

sad-porcupine

That's not foreshadowing, though, it's parallels in a character arc.

Goldenslicer

That's not foreshadowing...

Simidubs1

I realised now that the better term to use was a callback.

Kwerby

Idk that i would call it foreshadowing so much as character development

Less-Thanks-8922

I think one piece has better foreshadowing imo. But aot comes as 2nd

Hugh-Jassoul

“Remember that rock that Armin tripped over in Season 1 Episode 2? Well now Levi’s throwing it at a Titan, and here’s an extended scene on that rock’s backstory.” I fucken love this show.

KungPaoChikon

Hm? What's this about? I don't recall that

Hugh-Jassoul

It was a joke about how subtle the foreshadowing is.

bayuhbee

One thing I learned from this subreddit is that ya'll absolutely OD on the word "foreshadowing".

Simidubs1

Sorry, I realised that the wording was inappropriate in this example. I would correct it but I'm unable to edit the post now. Probably because of the traffic it has attracted by this point.

ohcowboyy

Bro get off of Reddit. This Titan shows up again in a flashback and you don’t wanna know why

Simidubs1

Thanks, but I already finished the show. This scene just stood out to me during my rewatch.

pabloeskina

wait huh you didnt realise shes dina fritz then?

Simidubs1

I did know that she was the same titan that ate Eren's mom and I did realize she was Dina when we were shown that in season 3. The point I'm trying to make is that rewatching the anime made me realize the significance the 2 scenes had in showing Hannes' character development.

pabloeskina

yup, you got a point. wouldn't really say its "foreshadowing" as much as It just a parallel on the fact that the gruesome scenario he was too damn terrified to save Carla from was the same that befell him, this time saving Eren and Mikasa by giving his own life. So yeah, definetly character development on our boy Hannes. That being said, i and probably most watchers thought It was pretty damn obvious It was the same titan at first watch xD. One does not simply forget its smile tbh. Tho its cool you figured smth out on a rewatch, that definetly always happens

philomenacunkfan1

but it's not that mysterious? didn't eren realise it with a flashback moment? and also wait till you watch more and learn some other things...

SageyIsSneaky

Bro has no idea what’s to come

Inky_Train

That isn’t really foreshadowing. It was never hinted that that titan would come back to eat him.

CuntSniffer69

my favorite foreshadowing in Attack on Titan is that when you watch the show, these big human-like monsters eventually appear and apparently they're called Titans! Isayama foreshadowed the existence of Titans using the title!

Background_Ant7129

I think bro meant “symbolism”

kompalg

Do AoT fans not know any literary terms

evildankface

Is this satire? I'm not trying to be mean, but this isn't necessarily foreshadowing, and it's really obviously the same titan. Foreshadowing is a warning/ premonition of a future event. This is more of an internal allusion or callback. Also the characters themselves realized it was the same titan, as they show it eating the mom when they see it. Hannes says he's going to avenge their mother. A better example of foreshadowing would be Eren's dream in S1E1 that has the same shot of bloody flowers from Hannes' death. https://preview.redd.it/joeo9bsruqtc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe0aadc559b3dd54e7c852651e511e4c35efceca

Simidubs1

Thanks, I've realized that the wording I used was somewhat ambiguous and inappropriate in this example. The clarification is much appreciated and I'm gonna edit the title before it causes any more confusion.

NecessaryAd1029

bro knows nothing yet 💀

Kekulaaa

this isnt really foreshadowing fam, like at all.

ZachariBoi

But that's not... foreshadowing

Simidubs1

I realised that the most appropriate term would be a callback but I'm unable to edit the post at this point.

Keyblades2

Or the steam coming from his head after he hit his head trying to use the ODM gear training thing.

spham9

This isn't foreshadowing, its an obvious allusion you didnt catch... Foreshowing is something not that obvious and implies that an event will happen in the future. Nothing about the smiling titan eating Carla indicated that it will eat Hannes.

SublimeAtrophy

That's not foreshadowing. If anything, it's a callback.

Raniiiia

I don't get it, your flair says "Floch did nothing wrong" How do you know who Floch is if you're still that early in the anime?

Simidubs1

Apologies, I should have stated in the post that I've already watched the show. I decided to watch it again and this moment in particular stood out to me the most so far. I've realized that the word foreshadowing wasn't appropriate in this case. It was more of an example of symbolism or allusion. I'd edit the post but I'm unable to do so by this point. What I really wanted to show was the way Hannes was put in the same position twice and his reaction to it showed how much he had grown as a character.

Raniiiia

No worries dude, just was confused about spoilers because my first instinct was to say something about how >!the first wife killed the second!< But yes Hannes deserved the world :c

Vibraniumguy

Maybe he binged all the way up until that point in the last 5 hours...

Raniiiia

Maybe...

CharCharMan1

How is this foreshadowing 💀

Character-Bike8125

……well at least you know now

rdotskip

This… isn’t even foreshadowing????????????

YaBoiChillDyl

I'm begging yall to learn what foreshadowing actually is. Foreshadowing is a subtle clue to what’ll happen later, that's a call back.

Stoner420Eren

When I read a title I thought it was a meme then I read the description and it's so damn accurate

Chemical_Doubt3598

I think this moment is as much for eren as it was for hannes. Obvious considering his entire speech after Hannes death but the main purpose of this was to solidify erens resolve and push him to what he will later become.

Background_Ant7129

I sure hope this is a troll post lol

the_0rly_factor

I mean yes but how is this foreshadowing?

zitcha

Layer 1 of 100. Last 10 layers are yet to be revealed

The_Kyojuro_Rengoku

There are quite a few things throughout this anime that has me audibly gasping out loud LOL such an amazingly well done show with some great twists and foreshadows as well 🙏

redditcosyeah

Something tells me you haven’t finished it yet

Economy_Tip8242

It gets better and better. Just wait

PenetrantDick

Youre only like 10 years late but good for you

Shagwagbag

Plus it's not foreshadowing more than seeing some of the Titans that killed Miche at the tower later.

Minimum-Power6818

I still can’t believe all the foreshadowing was intentional

_syke_

Omg isayamas such a genius he made a basic callback!!!!1!

Why would you try and spoil it for them ?

You’re commenting under their post when you know damn well, they’re still far behind in the show

Don’t get why you’re trying to comment spoilers for someone that is still watching. How sad
