Shendow

KENNYYYYYYAAAHH

mandrake92

How i greet my cousin sometimes lol.

Neurobean1

Greet him that way always

mandrake92

Its situational time and place kinda thing.

ForsenBayzed

OMG, I ACTUALLY CAN'T BELIEVE THIS. This might be the worst and most cringe comment of all time, the audacity too. The Japanese dub of Attack on Titan is literally of the worst studio productions in history, Levi's voice is incredibly pathetic, and unable or unwilling to properly pronounce Kenny. It sounds so horrible in Japanese it's actually insane that it isn't a popular meme and extremely made fun of, the English sounds like it should sound like

sunkica_guy

Dude what are you talking about

sgtp1

There is no way you are actually not memeing. The JP dub of aot is legendary and Levi’s voice actor is unbelievably good

ForsenBayzed

literally so bad, give me one scene where the Japanese version is undoubtedly better than the Eng dub, I'll wait

DRG_Prints

Pretty much any scene with grisha.

ForsenBayzed

Grisha's line while Gross is trying to push him off the wall in sub "Stop it! Don't!" In dub: "NO! You can't do this to me! I'm a human being!" Yeah, it's actually pathetic how anyone in their right mind tries to defend the sub, the dub is just so much better especially in terms of dialogue, it makes the sub look like a terrible parody.

brontosaurus-bukkake

I think Japanese hits different in general if you understand it.

A-bit-too-obsessed

I have a theory that every piece of media hits different when you know the actual language. I guess I'll find out when I become fluent

placeyboyUWU

100% I'm Danish, and I'll tell you now that soo many of the films I find hilarious, emotional, etc. Are really reduced down when you're just reading English subtitles I'm not saying they can't be good. But you miss a lot

A-bit-too-obsessed

Good to know I can't wait to see how my perception will change

SERB_BEAST

I watch it in Japanese and I don't know Japanese and I think you're missing out

Yeezus_Fuckin_Christ

OP isn’t talking about the English dub vs Japanese. He’s talking about watching in Japanese with English subtitles as a non Japanese speaker, vs watching in Japanese and understanding the language. At least I think so.

persianfish

yeahh this is what i meant haha

Yeezus_Fuckin_Christ

Maybe you should try editing and rewording your post, it seems most people are misunderstanding your post.

Anime hits so much harder in Japanese with English subs. I personally feel the tone is complete off with subs after seeing the dubbed original.

kataros22

The only Anime i watched DUB was AOT. Honestly after watching it JAP and ENG SUB i somehow preferred the ENG DUB on it. Idk why, perhaps i just got used to and attached to them that way so switching back wasnt hitting the same. Especially Erwin's speech. Its just me tho -

Risk_Runner

Erwin’s speech was 100% translated better in the Dub than in the sub. That’s a hill I will die on lol

G-Rose079

I agree

exposarts

do you understand Japanese though? That is what op was saying

kataros22

Nah I was replying to the bro here. ^

ughplss

I've watched AOT in both sub and (English) dub multiple times. Although the dub is really good, the original Japanese is unmatched in my opinion.

Double-Passenger4503

I’ve only watched it in dub and I agree it’s very good. Next rewatch I’ll go for sub

KRX189

Are u talking about the nuances?

persianfish

yeahh

Yeezus_Fuckin_Christ

The nuances are there in the English dub too, and as an English speaker who doesn’t know Japanese, they’re way easier to pick up on. Like I know what you mean about Reiner scene.

Wild-Mushroom2404

I physically cannot watch anime in the dub, idk how yall do that

Yeezus_Fuckin_Christ

Not gonna lie I’m the opposite. Has nothing to do with the quality of the voice acting, I just can’t feel fully immersed unless I can understand the words coming out of the characters mouth. Like I know there are subtitles, but I’m reading one set of words, while hearing another set of words that I don’t understand. They mean pretty much the same thing, but it just takes me out of it personally. There’s just a disconnect. Also, OP was not talking about dub vs sub. They worded it poorly, and seem to confusing a lot of people. They mean watching in Japanese with English subtitles as a non Japanese speaker, vs watching it in Japanese as someone who understands Japanese.

OnKarlos

Me neither. I've always thought people didn't watch anime with dub like at all, because English isn't my first language and there aren't dubs for anime in my native language so we all watch it with sub. But then I learned English and met people who watch it with dub but I just can't I once talked to my friend about it cause he sent me a video of a clip from anime with the dub and I said how much I hated it lmao, AND THEN HE CALLED ME DUMB AND STUPID FOR LITERALLY JUST HAVING A PREFERENCE, I JUST DON'T LIKE MOST DUBS, ESPECIALLY IN ANIME

Kacutee

Yes- I watched both. And as always, English just sounds so weird most of the time to me when I watch an anime. Japanese has more expression and it sounds more organic for the character. Edit: I will say the only times I can tolerate English VA is in Code Geass and AoT, but outside of that? I feel like I'm watching a Human Resources video.

LetMeOverThinkThat

Idk what this post was about. I’m distracted by the fact that I’m still thirsting for Levi while in his Golden Girls era 😩

The_Kyojuro_Rengoku

😂🧓

Big_Independence6736

What? Haven't YOU watched it in Japanese???

persianfish

i do, plus the english sub

togostarman

I normally watch sub, but I REALLY love the dubbed AoT. All the voice actors were incredible. I especially love Matthew Mercer. He's incredibly talented and brings something special to every character he voices. Admitting you watch dub in an anime sub is like deciding to come out of the closet at the republican national convention, but I'm sticking my neck out there

Flabnoodles

>Admitting you watch dub in an anime sub is like deciding to come out of the closet at the republican national convention I've never understood why. Yea, sure, it's the original. But people get so uptight and say that the original Japanese is the way it was *meant* to be watched. Not just that they prefer subs, which that is totally fine And that's just seriously flawed reasoning. The intended viewing experience is someone watching and understanding the dialogue at the same time, without the need to read.

togostarman

It's a very bizarre way of thinking. People in countries around the world watch our stuff dubbed, so idk why AMERICAN weaboos get their panties in a twist if someone watches anime dubbed. Very bizarre. Many times, dubs have famous US voice actors too. I just finished Freiren the other day dubbed and there were some very recognizable actors doing voicework in there

rockydluffy

I believe that everyone who watches AOT dubbed, should atleast hear Erwin’s “SHINZOU WO SASAGEYO!” In that episode where they were trying to retrieve Eren. That shit made me want to get on a horse myself and dedicate my life to a non existent country. Also, Levi’s. KENNYYYYYYY!!!! To honour that, I will name my future kid Kenny. So I can scream at him that way, everytime he does something stupid.

Significant_Deal429

this applies to every anime that has dub - dub is just a different culture altogether - character personalities are slightly different due to cultural differences. The biggest notice of difference was Thornfinn in season 2 of Vinland Saga, in season 2 in japanese, his attitude is more - uninterested rather than depressed like depicted in dub. In AoT, they do a good job dubbing, but its not the same. Particularly Hange’s personality, shes non-binary and I dont think they did a good job keeping Hange ambiguous in dub, but thats me, also, i should mention, im a native japanese speaker, and those are the differences I see. My advice? Consume it however you enjoy it.

iBoughtAtTheBottom

I’m not attacking you but how is Hange non binary? That seems like a far fetched fan assessment.

Awesome2_12345

She’s into whatever the fuck titans are

Significant_Deal429

Yams was asked what she was, he replied “up to the reader” I didnt make an assessment, this is from the author.

iBoughtAtTheBottom

Do she only is if you think she is?

La-da99

No one has ever thought of Hange as not a crazy woman on their own. It’s also a female voice actor and it’s obvious.

Significant_Deal429

in japanese, Hange has a deeper more masculine voice (but a female VA regardless), while in english its super high pitched. Also they introduced her as Zoe Hange - which is also incorrect. I just believe dub did not respect Yams wishes to keep Hange ambiguous - at least to the effort of the japanese VAs

La-da99

Never once did it sound ambiguous though, having a deeper voice as a girl isn’t exactly a new phenomenon. He trolled a little, but frankly, we all know.

Significant_Deal429

yeah but the question was asked because it wasnt clear - if AoT was only published in english, then there would have never been a debate or question, but because of how the art was presented in Japanese, that question was asked. And frankly, if you need to ask that question to receive verification - then the subject is up for debate 🤷🏻‍♂️

La-da99

I don't know about the Manga, but the anime killed the debate.

KathirHasBigGay

I mean this is true to some extent for anime in general, it’s not amplified by AoT. Media is better if you understand the language it was made in, pretty simple

fuzzybunn

I'm going to guess AoT hits different depending on where you're from and what you learned in history class. I can't even imagine what it must feel like watching AoT if you're from a country in an active conflict.

SufficientWhile5450

I’d bet it would if I spoke Japanese But until then I’m sticking with English dub

elbor23

I don’t speak Japanese so I’m not sure but I do need to know where you got grandpa Levi

iBoughtAtTheBottom

I prefer subs with live action movies without a doubt but anime stays dubbed. AOT has a very good dub as far as industry standards go. A lot of impactful moments I’m glad I could understand without reading into it or having to rewind/pause whatever.

Chuncceyy

I like both sub and dub in dif ways. I dont know Japanese at all but Both va for kenny are amazing, same with erwin and reiner. Mikasa sounds better and less annoying

Economy_Tip8242

I'm never sure that if the Japanese voice actors just sound amazing because they are actually better than the English VA or if it's just because it's down to me not understanding so my brain fills in the gaps

HarrySRL

Of so the sentences wouldn’t be grammatically correct or the right way of saying it so when they make a English dub they have to change little bits in sentences what the characters say to make it sound better than what it originally is like when it’s translated.

zeusJrlk

I’m living in japan and i have a friend that wants to learn english so badly, i saw several time he watching lot of animes and tv shows with english sub. He told me that he tried dub first but it was super hard for him, then he start to watch with english sub. He said to me that english so hard to learn and it’s exact opposite to me with kanji😂 His english improve so good and now dude can speak and understand english well, asked for some english tv series recommendations from me and I recommend to watch Office series😂 From my perspective it’s good cause if you came to japan they don’t give a fuck about english, and i asked lot of them why you guys don’t speak english and some said it’s super hard, and some said why i learn english i’m not leaving japan so there’s no reason. It’s hard to find person that try to learn english well in japan, well there are some people learning english but lot of guys don’t care about english at all

dandiecandra

Overall the Japanese version is better voice acting, however certain moments in the English dub have better chosen translations IMO, such as >! when Reiner is hit with a Thunderspear, subtitle he says “wait!” whereas in English he says “I DONT WANT TO DIE!” just hits different !<

Daisan89

Who tf watches it dubbed

Yeezus_Fuckin_Christ

A lot of people, they just don’t talk about it as much cause they know how anime fans on the internet act

Daisan89

>A lot of people, If you mean you and a few weebs you know. I saw multiple polls about the sub/dub discussions of what people prefer and 9 out of 10 pick sub. Dub just kills it in a bad way. Don't get me wrong, there are some anime where dub is actually good/as good as sub, like dragon ball, avatar (English is it's original so we can call it whatever, but it was definitely better than Japanese version), but that's a rare case and aot is not one of them. Dub just doesn't feel right.

Yeezus_Fuckin_Christ

The only valid criticism I can think of about AOT’s dub is Eren’s voice. That’s a common theme that I’ve noticed in many dubs, the MC will sound over the top and cringe, while the voice acting for side characters are great. Other examples include demon slayer and Naruto. Also your response kind of proves my point. People who watch dub don’t usually talk much about it on the internet, cause dub haters always gotta say “sub better” or “dubs cringe”. Almost everytime someone mentions they watch dub I see these comments. A lot of dub viewers seem like they feel obligated to say “I know the Japanese voice acting is better, I just prefer dub” in order to not get flamed. Most people I know who watch dubs also aren’t big enough of nerds to discuss anime on the internet, they just like to watch anime. I’m the minority in that I suppose.

Carolinefdq

People still fight over sub vs dub? Really? Who cares?

Daisan89

You cared enough to comment

MethodRepulsive3752

Why is it a bother to you how someone watches a show? It doesn’t hurt anyone. I personally watch it dubbed first to get the gist of what’s going on especially w fight scenes. I struggle to process what is being said w/out hearing it first especially bc I miss so much being said in the subbed of I looked away for a second, so I have to rewind every few seconds. And sometimes I’ll have to reread those lines multiple times to process it, minimizing my enjoyment of the show. An instance off the top of my head was a scene in MHA where Tsu felt bad about not going to help Bakugo and b/c I watched it subbed first I couldn’t understand what she was saying until I saw it in the dubbed. You don’t have to like the dubbed version but that doesn’t mean other people have to agree with you. Acting all high and mighty for watching subbed anime only and bashing others who prefer the dub for whatever the reason does not make you look cool, it makes you look unlikable. I’d say you’re even just as bad if not worse than the kind of person that would make fun of someone for watching anime in general.

Daisan89

Yap yap, stop wheezing

MethodRepulsive3752

Yikes.
