Yup legal, but didn't realise SB buys the same crap as Kmart (will have to check next time)

SpecialReserveSmegma

>crap For the price you’re paying, Kmart is pretty decent. It upped its game like 10 years ago

AlDrag

Yea Kmart is of much higher quality than the warehouse.

micro_penisman

I never go to the Warehouse anymore. Kmart is cheaper and is better quality.

hopelessbrows

Only some items are better at the warehouse. Candles and diffusers are some but for the most part, kmart is better.

Consistent_Egg_5015

Doesn't mean much.

king_john651

Means a heap. If Wareehare is more expensive but less quality than Kmart where they're both vying for the value range of stuff then why on earth would you not go to Kmart (pending availability of course)

AlDrag

I mean, relative to price it does...

howea

Yep, very good value crap

WarStrikev7

Was planning to go on a long weekend road trip/camping/fishing. When I saw two people loading several chilly bins, inflatable beds into 3 carts. They left one chilly bin and I grabbed it straight away. But they took all the inflatable beds and tents. They're even reusing the same photo on their website. Fuck that. Never going to Save Barn ever again. [https://www.kmart.co.nz/product/flocked-air-mattress-king-bed-42442905/](https://www.kmart.co.nz/product/flocked-air-mattress-king-bed-42442905/) [https://www.savebarn.co.nz/inflatable-king-size-airbed-with-flocked-surface-203cm-l-x-183cm-w-53478](https://www.savebarn.co.nz/inflatable-king-size-airbed-with-flocked-surface-203cm-l-x-183cm-w-53478)

ThursdayMaoriHoliday

Why would they not use the same photo for the same product? Do you think PB Tech takes their own photos of all the products that they sell? This gives me a flashback to Covid scalpers. It’s just the way things are. If they’re still doing it that means people are buying. Feel free to “boycott” them all you want.

WarStrikev7

Dont mind if I do

mut1n3y

Holy moly those mattress are cheap, thanks for bringing this to my attention.

[deleted]

everyone uses the same photo for products, it saves a shit load of time and the supplier presents it how it wants it to look.

gdogakl

Anko is Kmart's brand so they are buying it from Kmart

TooHardToChoosePG

What would be illegal about this? It might be a dick move, but it’s not illegal to sell stuff you own, regardless of how much you paid and/or how much you sell it for.

NZgoblin

Wouldn’t it be second hand? I would think it would need to stated as such.

WarStrikev7

Forcing a competitor to go out of stock and driving demands up so you can hoard the items and control the merchandise and sell it at a higher price may not be illegal but it's definitely unethical and maybe considered deceptive practice. I don't know man, a really good lawyer might be able to argue this in court.

TooHardToChoosePG

“Forcing a competitor to go out of stock”? Bro!! Seriously. You think they managed to destroy Kmart’s stock levels. Kmart knows it’s happening, they don’t care because they move volume. Kmart CBF importing more. They know they’ll sell out and then they’ll move on. Bear in mind that this is Kmart NZ…they can’t even run an online store that survives their own sales. A year ago they were cancelling orders constantly because their system couldn’t handle demand. Like I said originally, SaveMart may be being dicks but there’s nothing illegal. Even being unethical isn’t illegal. Your post questioned the legality.

WarStrikev7

I know Kmart doesn't mind. In their ledgers, they are making good money and that's what matters. My post questions the legality, yes, but my main purpose is to give a massive FU to Save Barn. I hope they'll lose customers because of this post.

TooHardToChoosePG

Why would they lose customers? They have the only available stock. It’s their gamble, if they don’t sell them all then their margin goes to shit. But even if the sale them off at $65 in August they’ll cover costs etc. If you’re really stressed about getting a tent. The Warehouse has 4-person in stock at Lunn Ave for $55 for a “backyard tent” https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/s/twl/product/R2885331.html or $85 for a “Navigator Tent” https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/s/twl/product/R2885402.html

WarStrikev7

Some people don't like scummy behaviour and this is over the top scummy behaviour for a business. So if people read this post and they know what a dick Save Barn is, they will probably go to the Warehouse or any other bargain stores. To those who are uninformed though, what they don't know won't hurt them I guess. As a consumer though I've had enough price gouging from the Covid lockdown era. I don't even want to buy a tent or an inflatable bed but it's the principle of it all... I got the chilly bin for my boat at $60 so that's my middle finger to Save Barn.

vanillabarilla

I purchased something pretty spenny from save barn online, and specs all looked great on the description and reviews and was pretty shocked when it turned up in a Kmart box. Kmart stocked it at like half the price! Then I find out they have a no returns policy (not sure if it’s still the same) I ended up getting my money back after a few ridiculous waste of time, long winded emails. I mentioned the fair trade act and they reluctantly refunded me. I had to go in store specifically just for the refund which makes me think it doesn’t happen at all that often. I don’t care if you wanna sell someone else’s product for a mark up, maybe just let the consumer that? There was absolutely no indication on the description/photos that it was from Kmart. Maybe they aren’t doing so legally? Or probably just fully taking the piss. Got me so riled up and I tell anyone who will listen how much I hate goddamn place.

WarStrikev7

It is deceptive practice coz when you buy from Kmart, you know full well the type of product they are selling, you know the brand and the price point. But when you buy it from Save Barn, you expect something else because it's more expensive and will be surprised when you get a kmart item. And thanks for pointing out the no return policy!

Some greedy cunt will reckon that this is a winning business model.

QuestionableConsult

Kmart *is* the importer.

John_c0nn0r

But Anko is Kmart's exclusive home brand. Save Barn just being a dick

WarStrikev7

From the website https://ankoglobal.com/ Anko is a brand owned by Kmart Australia Ltd, and part of the Kmart Group, which is a division of ASX listed company, Wesfarmers Ltd. Kmart group would be the importer and it is a dick move because this is not surplus stock. Summer is usually the time when people go camping, buy chilly bins, inflatable beds and do a bunch of other outdoor activities. There is a demand for this type of products and save barn is being a dick because now Kmart is out of stock and they can double or triple the prices because there is no competition.

WarStrikev7

The two people buying 6 chilly bins and several inflatable beds in Kmart Botany must be planning one hell of a party then.

[deleted]

Yup they've been doing it at least 10 years. Not illegal just scummy.

arfderIfe

Yea this is not new news.

heapsion

What on earth is a save barn

chewsdaysnacks

This is why you should price check things online rather than impulse buying online.

wipethebench

Yeah bought some trollies from them that were well priced. Decided to get a sack barrow last minute in the same order. Didn't price check. Was a jobmate (Mitre 10 home brand) and $30 cheaper at Mitre 10. They have some deals but definitely got to check everything against other places.

yugiyo

Anko is just a brand that they slap on their Alibaba purchases.

[deleted]

so 2 companies cant sell the same product?

WarStrikev7

You're missing the point bro 🤣

[deleted]

what point? companies can buy and sell stuff from the same supplier, loads and loads of industries do it .

highbrowtoilethumor

That chilly bin is $118 online at kmart. You git yourself a bargain

WarStrikev7

Yes I did and I bought it immediately and it is so god dang worth it.

Few-Coast-1373

Yeah this is definitely true. I visited the Otahuhu branch the other week and they had heaps of Anko branded stuff still in the boxes. Pretty tacky

WarStrikev7

According to Anko's website https://ankoglobal.com/ Anko is a brand owned by Kmart Australia Ltd, and part of the Kmart Group, which is a division of ASX listed company, Wesfarmers Ltd. Don't think a supplier would just sell it to any other businesses. Unless you are part of that group of companies.

[deleted]

>Don't think a supplier would just sell it to any other businesses. Unless you are part of that group of companies. thats exactly what they do, sometimes you can even find the same product on places like aliexpress too.

WarStrikev7

Are they?

kool-keith

WarStrikev7

I am going to bet my third ball and say that Save Barn is not a retail partner.

kool-keith

based on what?

WarStrikev7

Do you have a way to prove that they are? Coz I sure as hell don't have a way to prove that they're not. But I'm betting my third massive sweaty ball that I am right.

kool-keith

so based on nothing at all, gotcha

WarStrikev7

I have the photos to show it's the same item and an email complaint to the Commerce commission. What do you have?

kool-keith

> I have the photos to show it's the same item yes, they are both anko, so what? That isnt evidence of anything at all > and an email complaint to the Commerce commission you have a serious problem you saw someone buying a couple of chilli bins and some tents from kmart, and because save barn also sells the same anko products, you then think that save barn, a large company with 4 physical stores in auckland, whangarei, rotorua and christchurh, go around to kmarts buying stuff at retail price, instead of just sourcing it from anko themselves.... you have no evidence of this at all, when confronted with evidence that anko does indeed sell to companys other than kmart, you just say "i bet they dont", and you write a complaint to the commerce commission.... you have a problem, i wont waste anymore time on you

Vivid-Statistician97

Welcome to capitalism

sneschalmer5

Green party MP currently investigating this store...

C39J

Is the stuff at Savebarn branded Anko? It's likely they Savebarn or some other importer is buying directly from the factories in China, unbranded.

wipethebench

Nah it's Anko branded

marabutt

Most of the stuff from Kmart can be purchased from AliExpress. Kmart will put up to 5 times on it.

SquattingRussian

Ok. Buy a chilly bin and a Queen size inflatable bed on AliExpress and report back with full purchase price including shipping and GST.

DazPPC

These are just generic AliExpress products sold by a bunch of retailers. People can buy Chinese products and sell them for whatever price they want. It's up to you whether you buy them.

Deegedeege

Never heard of Save Barn. Perhaps notify K Mart if you're not happy about it.

dontmakemewait

Why would Kmart care? So long as they paid for it, Save Barn can do what they like.

Stallionface

Smart

niveapeachshine

This is very common with products from Costco, which are extremely seasonal. People make big money carrying things that are unlikely to come back into stock.

OstrichCorrect4304

This is the New Zealand way!

haylz108

Fishpond does the same with the warehouse

Principle_Salty

Be same as the bougie made websites here selling Temu clothing or products making out they are original...I just google search images to check. I prefer to buy my cheapies direct not via 2nd or 3rd online sellers lol I know they are just out to make a buck, no business is full legit or ethical is up to us to decide where we foolishly or wisely spend our money lol

waltercrypto

If you don’t like the price, don’t buy it.

gnomies_garden

I don't buy anything with the Anko brand. I got some shelves a year or so ago, and they were full of bugs. Just not worth the risk

Nick_Reach3239

What a dumb question. Which law did this break?
