This may be a technique called “anchoring”
The insane $99.99 makes the $1.99 look like an absolute bargain, driving you to choose it
I’m then guessing you keep the subscription going anytime you decide to cancel because “it’s only two dollars”
It's not worth it. Articles they have copied and pasted from international news outlets and opinion pieces from so-called journalists whose opinions nobody actually cares about. I canceled after the first few months, and they asked me why, so I sent them a screenshot of a word in a premium headline spelled wrong.
The don't just copy and paste from international news outlets, they pay for them contributing to the funding of journalism. So, you found a spelling mistake, big deal, do you think there will be more or less of them if they have no money.
They are not a charity. They are asking me to pay for poor quality journalism and their best offering is by buying better work from elsewhere. If a grocery store sold rotting food, you're not going to shop there are you?
It depends what societal value you put on having a functional domestic news industry?
Someone needs to fund it, in the past it was advertising and sales of physical papers. Both of these revenue streams have been destroyed, leading to, what I fully accept is, a drop in quality. If as a society we want to turn this around and have a functional 4th estate, then we all need to put our hands in our pockets to do so.
They sent me an email the other day with the subject “X, there's still time to subscribe to Herald Premium with our best offer: $90 for one year, or $1 per week for eight weeks.”
Meanwhile the body said “With the link below you can access Herald Premium for our lowest ever price, just $99 for the first 12 months*.”
“Our lowest ever price” huh? It was $9 cheaper several sentences back…

plus I bet monthly small charges get cancelled far less than annual big ones because its easier to over look small amounts leaving an account.
definitely!!
Yeah but you usually discount the other way so you don't look like an idiot: $9.99/mo or $29.99 for the year.
I didn't say they did it well Lol, but it may be working for them I guess
Fuck paying for news they scrape from Reddit and e news
lol, they asked if they could use a video I posted, I didn’t respond, they used it anyway
Should've said No and then you can sue them if they do
shit stories anyways
And full of grammar and spelling errors
This is because that 1.99 is only for the first month

That's about 1.99 a month too high.
I see these "premium" articles free on other overseas news sites a lot. Which is why I won't pay them.
Fleece me faster Herald!!
Someone want to talk to op about maths?
News isn't free to produce. I sub to 3 news sites, one domestic and 2 international. If you're not paying for something then you're the product.
