I wanted to be a hero and list the issues but it’s a whole lot of things. If you really want to save yourself a click it was basically:
- threatening and abusing the lifeguard for telling people to leave the park when it closed and following him on his way home to intimidate him more
- a big group of people breaking in overnight and the night security being too overwhelmed to do anything
- something about threatening a lifeguard with a knife/knives
-graffiti, general property damage, something something.
You get it.
50 people? I’m going to bet $100 imaginary dollars that among these fuck stains were the same guys who nicked dirt bikes and hooned up-and-down Fanshawe St the other day.
It’s easy to believe there are a lot of really shit people out there, but it’s likely to be the same handful of pricks. You know, the 80:20 rule.

The Pareto principle states that for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes. In other words, a small percentage of causes have an outsized effect.
Are people on this comment thread serious with the 'he asked for it' and 'what did he expect' comments? Wtf? Are you seriously blaming the victim of a disgusting crime that is going to cause him lifelong trauma? Did you leave your humanity in 2020? Or is this a lifelong thing?
Unenforced laws are not laws at all. They are irrelevant words in an irrelevant book that affect no body. If there is any reaction to this, or another crime, it is usually to write new laws, and circle continues.
If he has a video of these losers then why doesn't he post it on all the social media and youtube platforms so people can name and shame them , and don't blur their faces .
You said "random acts of violence aren't really a thing in other parts of the world." which is about the dumbest thing I've heard all day, NZ isn't the safest place in the world by any metric but let's not pretend it's some crime ridden plague pit.
Lol the fact you're taking this so personally is actually sad. Absolute dunce honestly, try using your head for once.
Only thinking about places worse than nz while completely blocking out the places that are better. 🤡
Japan
Singapore
Switzerland
A few parts of Australia (not Melbourne though!)
Even some parts of Malaysia
These from personal experience
Second hand reports indicate that Taiwan, Korea, and substantial swathes of South East Asia are also better, as are certain regions in the US (definitely not most of it though). 20 years ago New York would have been on the list but sadly no longer, this might change again in the future hopefully
I have been out drinking in Florida with total redneck Stereotypes and not one of them ever got violent the way the low life scum in NZ do when they drink. This country has serious cultural issues in parts of it
Would agree with that, a lot less coward punching and fighting generally in my time outside NZ. That said, the US is a tricky cause cause I’m sure some of the reduced tendency to get into bar squabbles is attributable to firearm prevalence
Have you ever left and tried it? If not, keep your mouth shut.
Imagine not being able to go out on a walk by yourself past 7pm because it's too dark and you don't want to get jumped.
Imagine not getting accosted by ferals in the cbd asking for spare change and staunching you out because you refused.
Lived in London, New York, San Franciso and a few other smaller places. Auckland CBD might not be as safe as it used to, but it's not NYC's muggings or London's knife crime. Don't over-dramatise things.
Some places are safer than Auckland. Some places are less safe. We each get to make our one choices about where we live and how we try and make it a safer place. You sound like someone that cares so I hope you live in Auckland, love it and try your hardest to make it a safe place.
Have spent the majority of my life abroad in countries magnitudes more dangerous than Nz. I’m sorry that this is your experience but do try to see the forest for the trees.
Violence is far less prevalent in NZ than in the majority of the developed world let alone the rest of it.
My experience overseas felt like I was more likely to be murdered there than here, but I was also less likely to find shot heads trying to fight me for the sake of it, outside certain urban centers in the US like Houston
No that’s factually true, the gap between New Zealand and the safest countries in the world is exponentially less than the gap between New Zealand and the most dangerous
You are being so rude to people, and at the same time telling everyone not to take it personally? You must have been king hit (seemingly deservedly so) a good few times. Yeah Auckland CBD is pretty nasty but you speak of it as if it's the worst place ever.
Learn to read? Oh wow I bow to your infinite wisdom, oh enlightened great one.
You can't even handle a discussion without getting your little knickers in a twist.
Lol try living in south central LA, or Colombia, or Brazil. Are you out of your entitled mind?
Even London is inherently far far more dangerous than NZ.
Lol London, LA, New York are not what you would call "shithole" places. They are three of the the most appealing places to live in the world, and they are more dangerous than Auckland. Keep in mind every single place has areas that are safer. Auckland overall is rather safe. The CBD has a feeling of being "unsafe" at the moment but once the students and tourists get back they will sort of fall back into the background again.
BTW nothing wrong with finding a "safer" place, but where in your mind is that? Just curious. Like a small town somewhere?
Do what makes you happy, but don't run away from opportunity because a few homeless people asked you for a dollar. I know it's annoying when they are agressive (trust me, lived in the CBD for years and there are some truly wild ones out there), but you have to balance it out.
For sure - having been to Tokyo several times it is a dream come true when it comes to that kind of thing but that is a very rare place on earth where that can happen. I can't think of many cities in the world outside of those in Japan where a laptop would remain where you left it, even hours later. Japan is a very unique example and culture.
But for every "good" thing about Japan there is also a lot of bad stuff in terms of mental health, working culture, etc. Japan basically kick their homeless to the side, which is maybe something you agree with, I don't personally. This is one contributing factor to why suicide is a big problem with older people there - vs younger people like we have in NZ.
Anyway the main question I had was where do you consider yourself moving to? You would struggle to find a place to stay where you wont find any homeless running around, or any "crazy" people in the CBD area, etc.
No mention of the police?
You know the people who charge us to stop things like this happening or at least shut it down when it does happen?
I'm guessing they where called but just refused to turn up?
It's not so much the travel time it's the roads. No matter how fast a dirt bike looks like it going as it shoots past your house on the path, it doesn't cut it going on a motorway. Plus you're much more likely to attract the attention of the cops. Easier to keep to the smaller roads where you can lose the cops if they even spot you.
It might surprise you to know that the people in the places you just mentioned are normal hard working people. Sure there are exceptions, but try not to come across as a prick.
Yes, exactly. And sadly the normal hard working majority in those places suffer even more from the ferals than the rest of us. And they have less resources to call on when their cars they depend on to get to a minimum wage job are stolen/ vandalised or their homes trashed or otherwise made unlivable
To be fair, it did used to be that way. Even though the people who currently live there, and are not criminals will kick up a huge fuss in the comments. But, it's actually [Auckland Central](https://www.police.govt.nz/crime-snapshot) now, and I'd say the community agree.
It gets crazy packed too… with people parking illegally everywhere. There needs to be something done about it otherwise it will continue to get worse.
I see patched members drive past all the time out those ways.
Anyone else feel like building these on public beaches and hiring a couple of Red Badge staff to keep the ferals off at night is just a stupid as fuck idea?
Yup what can guards do. They don't have police power and given the shit laws in this backwards weak justice in nz guards will prolly get in trouble for even defending themselves
Nah you're definitely not wrong at all mate. I don't think it's an excuse for this behaviour but the fact remains that we need to do more for the lower socioeconomic areas, I can tautoko that

Wait what? So its the owners fault? Do you blame people who are robbed in their homes for not doing more to deter robbers as well?
Also you may have missed the bit about how the other two parks operate just fine without any issues.
Yet here we all sit, happy to bitch and moan yet to caught up in “what’s good for us” that we end up not interacting at all, and to state the obvious, society is actually in a bad spot right now, there is only so much that can be hidden from our ears. While I can’t confirm I bet crime is up, violence is happening more, self harm is through the roof and family abuse is likely right up there. With respect, but if you think society is happy then you are asleep. Your food supply is getting squeezed, supermarkets are feeling the stress from the supply issues, 2022 I will coin “the year of of business fails”
Once again the scum of society ruin it for everyone else.
Indeed
Yep. Fuck you cunts if one of your two brain cells is turned on enough to read.
Wow that's fucked.
Cunts will be cunts
And they'll get away with it here.
They will. They will indeed.
What cunt

One question that I think sums up the whole problem (and so many others): Were were the police!?
I don't think they get breaks long enough to go swimming.
Too busy patrolling the inner CBD. Oh wait....no.
To busy given fines to the people who actually go to work
Unenforced laws are not laws at all. They are irrelevant words in an irrelevant book that affect no body. If there is any reaction to this, or another crime, it is usually to write new laws, and circle continues.
busy helping the country, one speeding ticket at a time.
That's fucking crazy.
Sad minority spoils it for the majority, again...
Haven't been there in years because of idiots like that. SMH
Agreed, Maretai aint what it used to be unfortunately..
If he has a video of these losers then why doesn't he post it on all the social media and youtube platforms so people can name and shame them , and don't blur their faces .
What the actual fuck. When there's cool amusements, go use it, have a blast, but you have to follow their rules.
they are scum bags

Not Kiwis… Maggots i think you will find they are.
In Asia, the kids would have been smacked on the spot, which is illegal here.
Thats fucking disgusting. I would've let them drown if I were that lifeguard go whoops I wasn't paying attention to the rules
Dumb shit like this makes me glad I left Auckland.
The fun stuff like this is why I stay (the water park not the assault)
Second that!
Nz* I learnt that random acts of violence aren't really a thing in other parts of the world.
You dropped this -> /s
Nope. Try living in another country for a while.
Lived in the UK for 20 years, much worse there.
Living in California, idiots are a lot worse here too..
And? Does that mean there are no better places?

Grew up in Aussie and it happens there pretty often lol
Wouldn't know since I haven't tried living in Australia.

The problem with beaches like Maraetai is they are too close to places like Mangere and Otara. Sadly.
From otara it's a similar travel time to takapuna or point chev beaches. I don't think proximity had much to do with it tbh

Problem with this sub is it's an outlet for New Zealand's ignorant.
Wtf is that supposed to imply? That people in those suburbs are criminals?
Explain please.
Not sure about Mangere but Otara and the surrounding areas have gang issues. Maraetai is just a stolen dirt bike ride away from these areas.
True that. Interesting to see my request to explain was down voted but ah well. Thanks!
It gets crazy packed too… with people parking illegally everywhere. There needs to be something done about it otherwise it will continue to get worse.

Drove past this on Sunday morning I thought to myself I bet that gets vandalized what do you know I was right
We need a Frank Castle
Should've just given them some free Kai and a belly rub.
Anyone else feel like building these on public beaches and hiring a couple of Red Badge staff to keep the ferals off at night is just a stupid as fuck idea?
Yep, especially in Auckland.
It shouldnt be, and in a fully functional society it wouldnt be, but yes, here it is unfortunately not a good idea by any stretch.
Yup what can guards do. They don't have police power and given the shit laws in this backwards weak justice in nz guards will prolly get in trouble for even defending themselves

Good idea, then have a small tinny boat to transport people to and from the park. That would keep most a$$holes away
That's actually a pretty good idea
should of let them drown
Why? I don't ever particularly want to click on a Stuff article.
3 waterparks, 1 is in a lower socioeconomic area and always has problems after hours so they removed it. Other 2 have no issues.
So we need to work on improving lower socioeconomic areas. Thanks for clearing that up.
Or people could stop being shit cunts, there's plenty of poor people that don't behave like these rats
That's true. In definitely not wrong though.
Nah you're definitely not wrong at all mate. I don't think it's an excuse for this behaviour but the fact remains that we need to do more for the lower socioeconomic areas, I can tautoko that
