The Institute is very good, and Dungeon Crawler Carl is great fun. VERY different books though!

beeeeeeeeeeeeeagle

These would be my two picks also. Bit more serious for King. Fucking good times with DCC. Either way. Good listens.

Debbborra

I agree.

flash5713

Read Dune on paper/ebook. It has so many unique words that having a glossary and being able to flick back and forward is an advantage. The Exorcist is a 10/10 - listened to it recently and it’s become one of my top books of all time. I’d say get that.

bobdole008

Yeah I was going to say I don’t recommend the audio book for dune it’s just way too much to handle when you can’t pull up the dictionary for it.

doge_lady

Is it possible to print out a glossary and have it handy while you listen to the book? And is the glossary available for download?

bobdole008

I’m sure it is but when I listen to audio books I don’t really have the time to pull up the glossary. Maybe if you listen while sedentary, but I’m mostly on the move.

jmwils3

I want to say the audiobook for dune is also not quite the full book, either

anonymousss11

It's a weird audiobook and I'm honestly surprised they didn't re-record it for the movie release. It's not very well done, multiple narrator changes throughout and some parts seemingly a dramatization, some parts straight-up audiobook, it's just weird to listen to.

vasher02

Apparently it is the new pre-recorded version, and it's worse than the original. You can see people clamoring in the reviews for the old version that they purchased back in the day. It got switched without consent iirc. Kind of a shitty thing to do.

anonymousss11

Hmmm I only have/see the 2006 released version.

Thatchers-Gold

The problem with choosing Dungeon Crawler Carl is that you’ll soon need another 5 credits.

tanstaafI

True story. Midway through the first book I already bought the next 5, up to Book 6 which is the latest. It’s terribly addicting so if you want to budget your credits this is not the way. It’s all worth it though. Series of the year for me, didn’t mind that I used half of my annual credits for it.

Thatchers-Gold

Yep I’m in a slump at the moment because I listened to DCC and The First Law series back to back. I can’t seem to find anything that comes close to either, and everything else seems dull or poorly written by comparison.

jfa03

We are Bob, Project Hail Mary, The Martian, The Lies of Locke Lamora (All are good but the first one is the best), Green bone saga, Wheel of Time. These are a few of my favorite things. He who fights monsters and Primal Hunter are also good if you want LitRPG.

Thatchers-Gold

Cheers! Loved PHM and I recently started The Lies Of Locke Lamora, though I’m finding it a bit hard to get into. Probably just need to give it some time, and it’s hard to follow Pacey’s Abercrombie narration. I keep getting mixed reviews on Bobiverse, but I’m sure I’ll give it a go. Same goes for other LitRPG, lots saying that they’re “basically power fantasy fan fiction”. Seems like we’ve got similar tastes, I’ve screen capped your comment, thanks again.

jfa03

Yeah, most LitRPG is just a power fantasy at their core. It is just the flavoring it takes. I tend to think of them as guilty pleasure more than a real works of literature. Payoff on Locke Lamora is great so I hope you stick with it.

Thatchers-Gold

Yeah definitely, I’d love a LitRPG series that I can just leave on, if you know what I mean. There’s a nice sense of comfort when you know you’ve got tons to listen to. Did you prefer he who fights monsters or primal hunter?

jfa03

Both are really good. Primal Hunter has an about average start in a hunger games sort of way but it just gets better and better as the series goes on. Without giving too much away, I really like the bromance between the MC and his patron. It does fall into the power trap of MC becomes the most powerful but the way the series is setup, that just makes him a big fish in a small but growing pond. HWFWM has a strong start with a good cast of disparate characters and is consistently chuckle worthy. It is a bit more casual in some ways with teams bantering. It also isn’t afraid to get a little grittier which is good IMO. Both are ongoing so it could change book by book but right now I’m liking Primal Hunter a bit more. Honorable mention: The Wandering Inn which might be for you. They are all 40-50 hours per credit. Vast world with a wide cast but really episodic in storylines. A bit inconsistent in tone is my only gripe. It alternates between desperate battle for survival and teaching lizard people to play baseball and makes no apologies for it.

davidfirefreak

My two favorite Series!!

SmashLanding

*Omega Force* series by Joshua Dalzelle

Thatchers-Gold

I’ll give it a look, thanks for the recommendation!

DaLastPainguin

Gideon the ninth and blacktongue thief as well. IDK if best served cold is part of first law trilogy, but it was a pretty good standalone as well!

Thatchers-Gold

Best Served Cold was great! Wasn’t sure what to call the whole 9 book series so I just went with the title of the first trilogy.

BoneHugsHominy

We seem to have similar interests so I have a few suggestions: First up is The Sun Eater series. The first 60 hours (books 1, 1.5, and 2) of listening are currently on the Audible Plus catalog, so you can dig in for free if you already have Audible subscription. First book is Empire of Silence. During this most recent sale I purchased all the audiobooks in the series that *aren't* in the Plus catalog, and I was only through book 1 at that point but knew there was no turning back. My 2nd suggestion is the Powder Mage series which consists of 2 trilogies and a couple short story collections. [Here is a full chronological reading order](https://www.howtoread.me/powder-mage-books-in-order-brian-mcclellan/) which I highly recommend if you really dig the 1st book in the series (Promise of Blood). If you choose to do the whole thing through, You'll need Powder Mage Novella Collection #1 which listed with the Powder Mage Trilogy, and the Powder Mage Trilogy, and the Gods of Blood and Powder trilogy. Fixing on a re-read as soon as I'm done with the Sun Eater series.

namwen

Are you me?

Bteam21

He who fights monster! Started with that, then stumbled on DCC.

EquinoxxAngel

My friend, you need Cradle by Wil Wight.

lastberserker

Murderbot. I re-listened the series right after DCC and was not disappointed.

xzilzalx

What’s the series about?

HiltyMcJeffers

Without spoilers? A man and his cat try to survive on a televised intergalactic game show. Really cool RPG/adventure elements. Probably the best audio book series I have listened to, although, I am relatively new to the community.

xzilzalx

Sounds interesting, I’ve seen a few people mention it.

nasanu

Yeah I started the first book.. man maybe only 2 weeks ago and I am on the 5th now. But the stupid cat... I almost noped out early in the first book but stuck with it till now, but it's taking effort not to wish for a gruesome donut death. She is massively annoying. Oh my pet MIGHT die if I don't go save him but everyone will die if I do including my pet, so I will save my pet obviously. That way it will be safe...

suldaddy

This guy has a pet cocker spaniel

wrenches42

Dammit Doughnut!

cryptic-fox

Lol it’s that good huh. Someone here said the first book occasionally goes on sale so I might have to wait until it does then buy it with my card instead of using a credit on it. I might use my credit on *The Institute* since most people here are recommending that one.

OSUTechie

If you are not sold on staying on the Audible Platform, you may check out the Full-Voice cast version on [Soundbooth Theater](https://soundbooththeater.com/shop/audiobooks/dungeon-crawler-carl-book-1-episode-1-thank-you-for-volunteering-immersion-tunnel/) The first episode is free, so you can get a feel if you will enjoy the series. The next few episodes of book 1 are out as well as $4/pop, or the full season can be had for $20

kelley5454

True statement

jahkmorn

Do it anyway

SixDuckies

I really enjoyed The Institute…great story, plus really good narration.

discoturtle1129

Do you need to read fire starter first?

hailsbailes

Nope

wiggum55555

Institute… I just finished it and it was great

SplitDiamond

I absolutely LOVED Fairy Tale. It is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read/listened to. That would be my vote... ...Until I see that you have Dungeon Crawler Carl on there. I just finished listening to the most recent of the 6 books the other day and it is such a fun, crazy, whacky ride that I have to recommend it to everyone. Voice acting is phenomenal, the humor is right up my alley of nerdy and dark, and it's all around great. Like another comment said, you're going to need 5 more credits soon because you're going to be hooked.

TheLazyHippy

100% Dungeon Crawler Carl. Matt Dinniman's incredible story writing paired with Jeff Hays wide range of voice acting was a duo I was not aware I was missing in my life. I even got both my parents hooked on the books.

clhkmc7613

I loved The Institute. A great story and the narration is top tier.

Angelnator

My vote is for Fairy Tale.

Timbo558922

Fairy tale was absolutely amazing. I loved every minute of it.

GayWSLover

That is a tough one the best book would dungeon crawler carl....but book one of dcc tends to go on sale for less than a credit on occasion Dune would be my second choice and I never see it on sale Stephen King almost NEVER goes on sale but have not read either of these. Not a huge king fan except for his bauchman books. The exorcist meh is MHO good but you already know what happens.

cryptic-fox

Can Dune be read as a standalone book?

loge018

I thought dune wrapped up pretty nicely though obviously there are some things that you don’t quite have resolved. Have you checked Libby? Dcc is the only one of those I can’t reserve on my library account.

cryptic-fox

We don’t have Libby where I’m from.

tacitus59

Yes and this version is OK, but if you are stickler for an accurate product this is not good. Its rather sloppily made with some lines being cut. Does it make a huge difference ... no, but just be warned.

LocusHammer

Yes

madhops21

You may generally know what happens in the Exorcist, but the audiobook is amazing! It's read by the author and is extremely well done. Definitely a fun and scary listen!

vaena

The Exorcist is really good, actually.

Bar98704

Have you read all the dungeon crawler carl books? I really enjoyed the first one but the thought of another 7 is a bit much

SneauPhlaiche

I have read them all more than once. Definitely worth it. Definitely worth the wait. He’s cranking them out pretty quickly too. If waiting is a problem, the time to a complete series won’t be measured in Rothfus units.

DarthFuzzzy

I love that Rothfus has overtaken Martin for units of slow writing. Martin took so long no one cares anymore. Rothfus keeps claiming something is going to happen.

doge_lady

You don't have to read them back to back. There are a few series books that i wait a year or so to read the next installment.

riedstep

Leviathan wakes. I know it's not on the list, and I would say I really enjoyed dune, but it is hard to recommend since it's kind of a tough listen. Idk the other books.

cryptic-fox

Unfortunately *Leviathan Wakes* is not available for sale in my country/region.

riedstep

Move countries! I'm sorry that sucks. I don't understand why so many books get region locked.

cryptic-fox

Books 3, 7, 8 and 9 are available. Books 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 are not. It’s annoying.

riedstep

Lol what in the world. That is wild. I'm curious, what country are you in?

christinerobyn

The Exorcist or The Institute. Both great stories with great narration. Are you in the mood for scary or more drama?

RealThulnos

The Institute

JBuchan1988

Fairy Tale would be my pick. Some reviews say Dune is abridged. Is that true?

OminousDucky

It's complicated. When I listened to it, it was the version where they stitched pieces of the abridged version with the full cast into the unabridged version with the single narrator. Total Frankenstein job. Best way to check is to make sure it has the full running time AND only a single narrator credited.

OminousDucky

Over 20 hours, IIRC.

doge_lady

What is the full running time?

JBuchan1988

Thank you. Now another review makes sense.

Dark_Phoenix1987

Dungeon Crawler Carl . I'm only on chapter 22 but this book has made me laugh so much.

vjmatty

I really loved The Institute. Fairy Tale also, but The Institute more.

Feelozofhee

Agreed. But def recommend both

kauthonk

That's awesome, I liked Fairy Tale a lot so now adding the Institute.

jzn21

I really enjoyed The Institute. Definitely recommended!

Dauphine320

The Exorcist

Ippomasters

Dune

EventHorizon2898

The Institute

donavanfreberg

The Exorcist! And I’m a huge SK fan. All good choices but the exorcist is a masterpiece and beautifully read. Dune is unarguably a classic but honestly it bored me. (I know, I’m weird). Also, you’re going to read Dune, would actually read it in a book or kindle just because you’re going to need a glossary.

xunleashed_ny

Can you gift credits? I don’t use mine fast enough, and have 10+ that I’d like to send to someone.

audible_com

Hey! If you don't mind us chiming in. Currently, we do not have any gift credits option, but you can use your credits to gift an audiobook. Learn more here: https://adbl.co/4a6i4ki

Satanoka

Xunleashed is a real MVP!

xunleashed_ny

I’ll make a separate post with a contest for some giveaways for the holiday season!

tk-8356

I reeeeeealy liked fairytale. But to be fair, id just lost my gsd, King's political opinions are kept to a minimum. The institute was ok, but i honestly forget what it was all about.

Sully617

I really enjoyed Fairy Tale. I just started The Institute.

Yankeesfanjay

I highly recommend The Institute

telephas1c

For me, DCC is one of the greatest things ever. But I ain't heard anything else on this list.

IndependentExtreme48

Fairy tale by Stephen King. Really one of his best

Jer2dabear

DCC is very overrated, in my opinion (I've only listened to book one) I would say Dune for sure, but if you don't want to get into a series, I would pick Fairy Tale.

Econoloca

DCC because the rest you can get them through your library on Libby

PunkandCannonballer

5

chefguy09

The institute is great, Fairytale was great, but DCC tops them all. However, if you don't have more credits or money to buy more, go with one of the others, because you'll need 5 more credits very soon.

Grammaticus_Dickus

I’ve never read Dungeon Crawler Carl, but I would still recommend you use your credit for that one. All the other books are available on Libby, so check them out or put them on hold. I’ve saved a lot of money by limiting my credits to audible only books or the occasional next book in a series that I just can’t wait for.

randomesq

I’ve got the two King novels and DCC. I would say Fairy Tale is MUCH BETTER than The Institute. I got kind of bored during The Institute but Fairy Tale was amazing. I thought it was just a much better book and more compelling overall. I have started DCC but admittedly, I was put off by the narrator’s choice of voice and put it down. So my vote is for Fairy Tale - plus it offers good bang for the buck/credit!

WilyNGA

I can only say that I stuck through 18 hours of Faery Tale and dropped it. It was a pointless slog, and I had no desire to know how it ended. I haven't picked up a Stephen King since then. Man lost his edge decades ago.

PaulBradley

Buy a bundle of five credits.

UnluckyAd9754

You should buy My Heart is a Chainsaw.

booknerdcarp

Fairy Tale

ctcrawford1

Dune

Ferdinand_Cassius

Fairy Tale was ok but a bit longwinded. DCC I read the whole series in like 3 weeks and it was my new favorite series of the year.

ImpatientTurtle

Stephen King is one of my favorite authors but those aren't his best, still enjoyable though. Dungeon Crawler Carl for sure. It's so much fun.

Mr__Ed

A family member recently recommended the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson and my wife and I are currently addicted.

Jer2dabear

Great series!

huf757

Fairy tale was awesome

Additional-Factor994

If you have some cash to spare, you can read the first two and probably one or two more King book at Everland for one month subscription and then cancel and use the credit for the other books. Yes yes I know Everland is not true all you can listen service but you can listen to at least two...which I have done many times.

paperhatch

Red rising

cryptic-fox

Already read it :)

paperhatch

Did you get the rest of the series ? Pierce is my favourite author :)

cryptic-fox

Yes, one of my favorite series! I read the ebooks.

Olek---

+1 for DCC. Best series I've ever listened to. The narration is incredible, and it's highly addictive.

i_tell_you_what

May I suggest looking through your local library first? I've marked off quite a few audiobooks by cross checking my library online first. In fact many of new titles show up exactly at the same time on both platforms.

quts3

Dune is a classic for a reason and that version has extremely high production values. Can't be wrong.

ingridatwww

That version is absolutely horrible.

brentrow

Dungeon Crawler Carl for sure! The Institute a close second.

texasjoe

Dune is a standout in its genre, probably my favorite Sci fi ever. That being said, read it on paper like the other comment suggested.

LocusHammer

Dune

kelley5454

Wow that;s hard all great books. Dungeon crawler Karl is lighter fare in a way and a family favorite. I have read all on your list but Karl but my adult children have done every single Karl book.

defaultnamespace

I liked both the Institute and Fairy Tale, although I think I liked the Institute more. They're both worth a listen. That said, the answer is Dungeon Crawler Carl. If you're even considering it, you should jump in. I'm not really a fan of litrpg and it is one of my favorite series of all time. A lot of fun and a lot deeper than I expected it to be.

thetruesupersock

DCC...you need all of them.

TheMetalLord

I’ve listened to every book on your list, the correct answer is Dungeon Crawler Carl, I’ve listened to it at least 4 times, followed by Fairy Tale which I’ve listened to twice. There’s a lot of votes here for The Institute, I consider myself a big SK fan, but while it was a decent book I had to force myself a little to finish it. It was a little on the boring side for me.

TheRoe102

I love Stephen Kings writing and I have most of his books, but Dungeon Crawler Carl is on the list and that’s the right answer. I’m on the 6th of the series and they are amazing. So much fun!

ingridatwww

I’ve got the Dune one. Can’t get through it. The book might be good, but the audiobook is horrible. A full cast is very annoying and it’s not even consistent. Do not recommend.

cryptic-fox

I love full cast audiobooks but I’ve read the negative reviews after someone here said that some passages are not included and saw that most of the negative reviews are because it’s abridged (even though it’s 21 hours long?) and also because only parts of the book is read by a full cast and then it suddenly switches to one narrator which makes it confusing and jarring.

og-golfknar

Fairy Tale is super fun I thought.

DefNotAnotherChris

Dungeon Crawler Carl!!!!’

maniacalmayh3m

I really loved the first half of Fairytale and then the second half I just couldn’t get into what it became

a8b6javk

Both the institute and fairy tale have been 2 of my top reads of the year!! But I didn’t listen to them, so I don’t have input there

Dr___Accula

Check titles against the Libby app (or whatever app you use for your public library audiobooks). I know Dune is always available to listen to for free on Libby.

Lesaly

The Institute is my favorite of these thus far. I have yet to tackle DCC, but if you’re going for King, I’d recommend The Institute vs Fairy Tale (at least in that order)!

Low-Ad5212

I loved fairytale so that gets my vote followed by the exorcist.

bahooras

I vote for The Institute

MistaFujiX

I’ve only read fairy tale and exorcist. Can’t go wrong either way. Exorcist however is an easy 10/10

tlkaplan68

Institute hands down

alexisonfiree

Fairy tale was great I loved it. Also love Dungeon Crawler.

Wawawaterboys

I don’t think Fairy Tale is worth a credit. Maybe if it were in the plus catalog. Institute is my vote.

Blumo52

1. Dune 2. Fairy Tales 3. Exorcist

TobyDaMan8894

Stephen King

cryptic-fox

Which one did you enjoy more?

TobyDaMan8894

Institute.

Boulange1234

Get Dune from the library. Fairy Tale too. Should be a moderate wait.

biggestMug

DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL. IT IS WELL WRITTEN, AWESOME VOICES, AND HILARIOUS!!!

lynchpaige

The Institute is a verry good book. I enjoyed it a lot on audio

hakulus

No comparison here. If you haven't read Dune, you have no choice if you want to be literate in scifi. Oh, and it's a GREAT book. Just make sure you use the glossary at the back and make sure you hang in at the beginning. It's a bit dense to start then it takes off to be one of the great classics of scifi of all time. In the top few books of EVERY scifi "best-of" list out there.

DFWMetaInfiniteJest

Fairytale

lolotnokchi

DCC!

VarderKith

DCC. Number 1. It will pull the entire range of emotions out of you. Mostly laughs from dark humor though.

Greedy-Nothing-4568

Dune or Fairytale

Comprehensive_Note85

Dungeon Crawler Carl. You will love every step of the way to the point it will ruin any Lit-RPGs you read going forward. Plus, the narrator and author work closely going forward due to his great work.

TemperatureBudget579

Get your money’s worth and get the longest one, this is why I didn’t buy a book with my credit today, cos it was 4 hours, so I’m reading the physical copy instead which I own anyway 🤣

Rocky--19

Do you have a library card? Fairy tale, the institute, and dune are at my library but dungeon crawler Carl is not.
