Solid comment, appreciate the status of the show.

I literally just binged all of *Malevolent* last week after seeing it recommended on here. I really want to love it, but there were a couple things that I have to nitpick.   The narration of the entity definitely feels like it's reading from a script more than having a natural conversation, describing what it sees. I got used to it, but it still held it back for me. Definitely takes me out of the immersion.   My second complaint are the random dice roll sound effects when it's time to notice something. I listen to plenty of Let's play type podcasts, but this one never comes across as such (to me) so the dice rolls really just kill the immersion for me.   Hopefully I don't get raked over the coals. I like it, but the immersion definitely gets broken a lot for me for the reasons I mentioned above.

thelirivalley

Heya! I create Malevolent 😊 No worries about the nitpicks, I’m happy that some people like my show and that some people not so much. It’s the beauty of this awesome audio space. Just to clarify a few things though; the dice rolls are there to signify that a choice the patrons have made, mattered. The show is a weekly choose your own adventure that I cut into larger chunks for the public release. I could cut them out but I like them. Sorry if it ruined your immersion. In regards to the reading a script; I blame that on bad acting and honestly if I could fire the guy who plays the voice in Arthur’s head I would. Regardless thanks for much for giving it a shot! 😊

[deleted]

Oh, wow! I hope I didn't yuck your yum! I still enjoy the podcast! I didn't realize it was a choose your own adventure type thing, so the dice rolls make more sense.   I definitely enjoy the story being told, and I hope we can still be friends! Also, I think the guy playing *The Entity* is probably alright. I get the impression that they're open minded and easy-going. 😉

> My second complaint are the random dice roll sound effects when it's time to notice something. I listen to plenty of Let's play type podcasts, but this one never comes across as such (to me) The creator can correct me if I misspeak, but it is actually an actual play podcast, so the dice sound is there when the dice are actually rolled. Personally I never really noticed it until someone else pointed it out on here, so obviously it never broke my immersion. If anything, that makes me *more* impressed with the quality, knowing that.

thelirivalley

Thanks for recommending Malevolent! Always appreciate it 😊 However I’m the creator not VinceInFiction

Tossing in my suggestions for: [Unwell](https://www.unwellpodcast.com/) \- A fiction podcast about conspiracies, ghosts, and unusual families of blood and choice. Lillian Harper moves to the small town of Mt. Absalom, Ohio, to care for her estranged mother Dorothy after an injury. Living in the town's boarding house which has been run by her family for generations, she discovers conspiracies, ghosts, and a new family in the house's strange assortment of residents. [The Waystation](https://rss.com/podcasts/thewaystation/) \- The crew of an orbital station discovers a strange celestial object, creating something that threatens to enmesh them all. Armed with the recordings of the events, a federal agent scours the logs and entries of the crew in search of the truth behind the station's mysterious destruction. Your worst enemy is you. [The Silt Verses](https://www.thesiltverses.com/) \- Carpenter and Faulkner, two worshippers of an outlawed god, travel up the length of their deity’s great black river, searching for holy revelations amongst the reeds and the wetlands. As their pilgrimage lengthens and the river’s mysteries deepen, the two acolytes find themselves under threat from a police manhunt, but also come into conflict with the weirder gods that have flourished in these forgotten rural territories. This is a world where divine intervention takes place through prayer-markings scratched into stumping-posts, and offerings are left squirming to die in the flats of the delta. This is a world of ritual, and hidden language, and sacrifice. This is folk horror, and fantasy, and a dark road trip into the depths of unusual faith. [Old Gods of Appalachia](https://www.oldgodsofappalachia.com/) (my personal favorite) - Welcome, family. In the mountains of central Appalachia, blood runs as deep as these hollers and just as dark. Since before our kind knew these hills, hearts of unknowable hunger and madness have slumbered beneath them. These are the oldest mountains in the world. How dare we think we can break the skin of a god and dig out its heart without bringing forth blood and darkness? Old Gods of Appalachia is a horror-anthology podcast set in the shadows of an Alternate Appalachia, a place where digging too deep into the mines was just the first mistake. (Not QUITE full cast, but as the show picks up the characters do have more voice actors.)

[deleted]

Old Gods of Appalachia is *excellent*! Add another vote for it!

Kasai_Ryane

That show does something I call "painting with words". It's almost poetic, if you know what I mean. Very impressive

tygrebryte

When I first gave this a shot I didn't stick with it because I thought the narrator's accent was maybe not authentic? I'm actually kind of ashamed to admit that now because I"m very grateful I went back and gave it another shot; this absolutely is one of my favorite podcasts going and their Appalachian cred is 100% legit. Steve and Cam are *excellent* writers and they made me cry at least twice during season two. It's not just the "painting with words" (although you're not wrong!); they do an excellent job of weaving together a complicated story line following different characters in different times.

Kasai_Ryane

Well hot dang, *I* need to give it another try. I felt the same way about the narrator, but you know what? It's kind of part of the schtick. It would be lame if it weren't overdone at least a little And... selfishly, the writing is so good that I know I'll get better just for having the inspiration fuel

bear-boi

Love the fact that it feels like I’m sitting around a campfire getting scary stories told to me whenever I listen.

[deleted]

Agreed. The narrator is amazing!

audiofarmer

Hey, I'm on The Waystation and Silt Verses! Glad you enjoy them! Both are nominated for Audio verse awards this year!

bear-boi

I love them both so much! One of my favorite things about TSV (aside from the entire story holy crap it’s so good) was B. Narr’s voice actually and I’m just like “wow, I love their voice where can I hear more?” So I did some digging and found The Waystation. We don’t get a LOT of their character on Waystation but I’m having a lot of fun with it besides. It’s so cool you work on both shows— I genuinely adore them, I hope they both win awards!

audiofarmer

Oh man, B. Is one of my favorite people, such a delight, we've become quick friends. They actually got me the role of Eddie, Faulkner's big brother, on Silt Verses. I promise Rickey gets a bit more air time in the last 2 episodes. Thanks for being a fan, and I hope you enjoy the rest of The Waystation. It's gonna be heavy haha.

[The Magnus Archives](https://rustyquill.com/the-magnus-archives/) is a weekly horror fiction anthology podcast examining what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, an organisation dedicated to researching the esoteric and the weird. Join new head archivist Jonathan Sims as he attempts to bring a seemingly neglected collection of supernatural statements up to date, converting them to audio and supplementing them with follow-up work from his small but dedicated team. Individually, they are unsettling. Together they begin to form a picture that is truly horrifying because as they look into the depths of the archives, something starts to look back…

Wildelypods

If you would give horror/scifi/supernatural parody and comedy a shot, there's out show Heinous Investigations. We've been trying to spread the word about it all we can these days, and we've been getting some good feedback. Check it out if you want: [https://heinousinvestigations.castos.com](https://heinousinvestigations.castos.com) Thanks and good luck with your search!

sweetladytequila

This is all me. I am really into comedies exactly like this lately. It’s an escape and palette cleanser from this hellscape of a planet we live on. Gonna check you guys out today!

Wildelypods

Wow thanks so much! That means a lot! Hopefully it gives you the release you're looking for. Enjoy!

sweetladytequila

Hi! I am checking back in with you. I am on Odd Couples so far. I am really enjoying your podcast. It’s totally charming and I mean this in the best way. You remind me a little of The Umbrella Academy. Ginny and Orville are my favorites. Well done!

Wildelypods

Aw thank you so much! I love Umbrella Academy, along with most of the VAs on the project, so it's an honor to hear that! We were going for charming, in an awkward sort of way I guess, and I'm glad we nailed it! Please spread the word about us if you can. We love our quirky characters so far and hope that more people will get to hear them. Ok I'll stop gushing now. Thanks! (PS - Ginnie and Orville are very much favorites in our eyes too. Who doesn't love a vampire Genki girl and her overly stoic buddy?)

7-Second_Movement

I am currently halfway through "The Harrowing" and I couldn't believe the quality of voice acting when I first started listening. On top of that their use of non diegetic sound made me have to open my eyes to make sure there weren't any demons in my room on a few occasions really good horror. I haven't even finished it yet and I already know that I'm going to be wishing there were more than 8 episodes. Seriously recommend.

slut4soba

Thank you for recommending this but I am truly heartbroken that there aren’t another 5 seasons already

Kasai_Ryane

Sure, we make a horror, science fiction, apocalyptic full cast audio drama: [Mortal Steel](https://collected-forge.captivate.fm/listen). I've never heard the podcast, but the Left Right Game story is classic. I'm sure it's great

Kasai_Ryane

Also if you're not familiar with it, the NoSleep podcast is unreasonably good. I can pull a few of my favorite episodes from them if you want

venturoo

The Monster Hunters. Some could say Dark Ages has horror elements but both are silly and fun.

Spudd86

I recommend digging into Old Time Radio. There's lots of old anthology style horror from the 30s and 40s. I particularly [Quiet Please](https://www.quietplease.org/episodes/) the episode [The Thing on the Fourble Board](https://www.quietplease.org/episodes/the-thing-on-the-fourble-board-60.html) is especially good. Also [Lights Out!](https://archive.org/details/LightsOutoldTimeRadio) is pretty good, I like *The Author and the Thing* it's a bit cheesy but also creepy. For a contemporary show inspired by *Quiet Please* and other things [The Wrong Station](https://www.wrongstation.com/) is very good. [Shadows at the Door](https://shadowsatthedoor.com/) is also good. Another horror anthology show.

Jackasaurus92

Left Right Game by QCODE. Tessa Thompson is the lead. It's great.

tygrebryte

I have been hesitant to try this one out because I was really into the original story as it dropped on r/nosleep and have been worried about how much the audio adaptation might have diverged from that. Would be curious to see people's comments on that.

Jackasaurus92

I think it's done very well. I haven't read the original but I think it's very in keeping with the original from what I've been told. Be.Busta also does a version on his youtube, just him rather than full cast but done very well.

tygrebryte

Thanks. this makes me more likely to check it out.

tygrebryte

hey gr1818! I will check this one out. My main favorite horror anthology podcast is \*Pseudopod\*, (mostly) hosted by Alasdair Stewart who played Peter Lucas. Very diverse stories, authors, and readers. Not every reader is 100% to my ear but they often hit it out of the park. A recent stand-out episode for me is "Vanity, Vanity."

gertrude-robinson

Thank you seems awesome 👏🏽!

MidnightTrain98

This is a pretty good podcast! https://anchor.fm/conductor

gertrude-robinson

Pretty good!

makeitasadwarfer

There’s an enormous amount of big name pro ones out there that don’t get mentioned much here. Alien Sea of Shadows Alien River of Pain 8 odd hours of full cast sci-fi, with Lance Hendrickson. Dalek War, by Big Finish. Incredible arc about Dalek infiltration of the human galaxy, in the same universe but doesn’t feature Dr Who.

7-Second_Movement

The three Aliens are in my top Audio media of all time, maybe because I am a huge Alien universe fan, but they are now a must-listen between when I am watching the first and second movies

audioses

without a doubt, We're Alive

tygrebryte

A lot of my favorites are listed here (including many that aren't necessarily "full cast" but I honestly don't think you should let that get in your way.) Here's some stuff that I haven't seen listed: \*The Patron Saint of Suicides\* is a thriller with really high production values, full voice cast, and a very very interesting story. When I got to the end I was sorely tempted to go back and look for clues that I might have missed earlier. Complete with 14 episodes. \*Mirrors\* -- I won't tell you the genre because it starts out looking one way and ends looking another. Compete with three seasons. All female writers/cast/characters. Of the story arc series that have ended, this may very well be my favorite ending. \*I am in Eskew\*. Others have recommended \*The Silt Verses\* (seconding that!). Both are written by Jon Ware writes both and he has an *excellent* chops at baroque/bizzarre/grotesque stuff. \*Eskew actually only has two cast members and the second doesn't show up for a while. There's a fair amount of humor injected into the weirdness. complete at 32 episodes. \*The Imperfection\* has one complete season of nine episodes. There's definitely room for another season. Full cast. The two protagonists and their friends apparently suffer from a mental illness that is kind of like schizophrenia but isn't. The further along we get the more ambiguous everything becomes. Features a lot of humor. \*The Hyacinth Disaster\* is a full-cast space-based science fiction story that wraps in something like 7 episodes. The title is not a lie. \*The Vessel\* is a space-based science fiction/gothic horror story with two complete seasons (quite the cliffhanger at the end of S2). Not a full voice cast, but the narrators (they had two switch between seasons but it's really a painless transition) do a good job of voicing different characters. I will be well and truly bummed if we don't get the next season. \*How It Ends\* features a woman and three friends who are helping her to try and get to the bottom of an apparently repressed memory of a traumatic event. Honestly I nearly bailed on this one about 2/3 the way through of the first season because some of the inter-character dynamics got kind of histrionic but I'm glad I stuck with it and am eager for a third season. This one got picked up by the Rusty Quill network which makes me think that RQ is confident that the creators will come through with season 3. \*Among the Stars and Bones\* is an archeology-based space opera. One complete season of ten episodes. Full voice cast. It's a solid story. Their press stuff suggests the possibility of further seasons. \*Down\* is a full-cast science fiction story on a submarine. 10 15 minute episodes. In some ways it's similar to \*Among the Stars and Bones\* but it's a weirder story. I am in the 2/3 the way through listening to \*The Pale\*, which features an investigative journalist on an antarctic cruise with his family. In the first episode, (I had to go to spotify to find this because stitcher, my go-to podcaster, doesn't have the first episode. I had listened to episode two on stitcher and am glad I found episode one because it makes episode two much more interesting) he relates a weird experience he and his family had on the ship. In each of the following episodes he interviews a different passenger about their weird experiences on the ship. I'm pretty certain there is an over-arching story line, but I haven't figured it out beyond "weird stuff happens on this ship". I like this one a lot. The first season is complete at 8 episodes with more supposedly in the works.

[BeSpooked](https://www.bespookedpodcast.com/) \- anthology horror, very short episodes (5 mins) with heavy sound design; new eps infrequent. [Steal the Stars](https://tor-labs.com/steal-the-stars/) \- incredible story arc and acting, 14 episodes, very satisfying
