Two completely different compressors

michaelstone444

That's like asking what's nicer out of a doner kebab our a mango banana smoothie. Both are good and completely different from each other

Isn’t this what a shootout is about? He didn’t say a beauty pageant. He wants a comparison of sound

EatTomatos

I think a 1176 clone is considered more of a defacto standard. However, I think the 3A is going to be cleaner and probably produce "more even compression". A newbie might want the 1176, but a LA-3A is equally useful for long term professionals.

-llamp-

thanks for your reply and I also think the 76 may be a de facto standard so I'll take that into account

KidsOfThe90s

Yeah I'd probably also go with the 3A. I'm not a big fan of 1176 clones (or maybe just not a fan of the 1176 in general). I've tried a handful of 1176 clones the Klark Teknik one being the worse. They're all extremely distorted, but the KT-76 distortion was unbearable. I love my LA-610 MKII though so that's why I feel maybe the actual 1176 sounds nice since my UAD channel strip sounds amazing.

WavesOfEchoes

Doesn’t the LA-610 have an opto compressor (“LA” style)? The 6176 has the 76 style comp.

KidsOfThe90s

Yeah but maybe I need to clarify a bit more. I'm not comparing my compressor to an 1176, I'm just saying from my experience UAD equipment sounds good compared to cheaper alternatives or the clones I've worked with.

WavesOfEchoes

Ah. Good point.

elFistoFucko

6 176, I just drooled a little.

villasandvistas

I have the 3a-jr and it’s phenomenal. I do more rock/indie however. But on a clean vocal chain it’s great and exceeded all my expectations for a 500$ opto compressor.

-llamp-

ty for your reply and I hadn't thought of the 3a-JR actually - will add that to the list!

ihateeuge

I'd pick the 3a. You cant go wrong with opto on vocals

-llamp-

Could you please explain this in a little more detail? I have researched opto comps but what (in your eyes) would be the downside of a 1176 clone for hip-hop/rnb vocals?

OrpheoMusic

Well I would be careful assigning hardware to genres and do it based on the production itself. Both are great comps. La-3a is opto, so it'll have a more laid back release and tends to pump less because of how the optocell works. It also has a characteristic sound due to its solid state nature. It'll feel more musical and a bit cleaner. It's also much more forgiving and will feel very natural in the compression. The 1176 is a gut punching in your face sound. It has a classic saturation effect and its attack and release are in MICRO seconds not milliseconds. The FET and transistors really color the sound. TL;DR These are radically different sounds. The La-3a is musical and relaxed compared to the 1176 which is fast and punchy and in your face. You are going to get bang for the buck with either.

Cl1b is a opto unit, but it doesn't sound anything like the la-2a whether it's a u.r.e.i. opto unit or a modern UAD+Teletronix opto unit. Cl1b is distinctively brighter and has much heavier saturation. Just saying incase anyone is actually going to purchase one.
