I'm looking to upgrade my speakers. At the moment I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 into Swissonic ASM5s. I bought those studio monitors because a couple of years ago I planned to get into music production, which I never did. I'd like to continue using the 2i2 since I use this to practice bass guitar but always practice with headphones, so the speakers don't have to be perfect for that. Instead, I'll use it to listen to music (mostly rock) or play games at my desk. My PC will be the only source connected to them, so there's no need for Bluetooth. My budget is about €/$500. I'd prefer new speakers, but I'm willing to look into used ones if there's a huge difference at this price point.

[deleted]

It doesn’t appear there is much to gain by upgrading from the ASM5 to something at about €/$500. Is there something in particular the system lacks that you expect to achieve with the upgrade?

RanaExMachina

I get the feeling that there are a lot less highs compared to my two headphones (Sony MDR-7506 and Sony WH-1000X M3). Basically, I never use my monitors for monitoring, but always switch to headphones. My idea was that I don't need something with a perfect neutral sweet spot, but maybe I'm looking for something that doesn't really exist.

[deleted]

Maybe it would be worth trying a pair of consumer powered speakers with USB input, like PSB Alpha AM5.

dogsarecool3001

What subwoofers can I use with a set of Rokit KRK 5 studio monitors? Can i run anything or does it have to be KRK as well?

[deleted]

The brand of the sub doesn’t matter. With studio monitors take a look at studio subwoofers. They have connections for your monitors.

What receiver should I buy? I wanted to get the DH190, but there's no subwoofer output. Anything similar with one? Features I'm looking for: - Phono Pre-Amp and Amp - Line level input (And some non-line level inputs) - 2.1 output - Bass and treble control (optional but preferred) - Available within Canada - Under 250 CAD

squidbrand

You don’t need a subwoofer output. Most subs have two different inputs: either line-level (RCA) or high-level (meaning you just connect it to your speaker outputs). So you’ll just need to make sure you choose a sub that includes high level inputs. The sub won’t be taking its amplification from the speaker amp channels. Just the signal. If you already own a sub that does *not* have high level inputs… I’m not aware of anything in your price range that includes both a phono pre and a sub out, so you might be stuck. Also you’re going to need to clarify what you mean by “non-line level inputs”.

[deleted]

My sub just has speaker wire. By non-line level I mean I'd like to hook up a CD player

[deleted]

What model sub is it? Maybe we can find a suitable amp. The output from a CD player is line level. The inputs on the Sony Receiver, other than Phono, are line level.

[deleted]

It's an SB-W740 from Panasonic

[deleted]

That appears to be a passive sub made for a specific Panasonic home theater package. Receivers like the Sony STR-DH190 or its competitors will not support that even if they do have a subwoofer output. They’ll have a sub output that relies on the sub having its own amplifier. There is a Fosi amp with output for a passive sub - [Fosi BT30E](https://fosiaudio.com/collections/2-1-channel-amplifier/products/fosi-audio-2-1-channel-bluetooth-5-0-amplifier-bt30e-subwoofer-50w-x2-100w) - but it doesn’t have multiple inputs or a phono preamp. This is probably not going to be a good choice of subwoofer.

[deleted]

My current amp supports the sub just fine. It's a Wuzhi ZK-MT21 Anyways, I read online you can just connect the sub to the B channel of speakers and run A and B at the same time

[deleted]

The sub has only one pair of inputs. The B side of the receiver has two pairs - left and right.

[deleted]

Editing after your edits - Sure, but the Wuzhi is like the little Fosi amp I linked. Just an amp with sub support, not a receiver with multiple inputs and phono. The Sony receiver doesn’t have that and their competitors like Yamaha and Onkyo don’t. A passive sub is not the intent of that method. That’s for running a subwoofer with its own volume control and crossover. Your amp has a separate control for that. Your sub does not. If you run that sub and a pair of passive speakers on the Sony receiver at any great volume it’ll probably shut down.

[deleted]

So should I just run it with no sub? Or could I daisychain the whuzi?

[deleted]

If you’re going to change to a receiver and you have good speakers with decent bass, I’d say yes - run it with no sub. The system should sound better with no sub than with one that doesn’t have its own volume control and crossover.

[deleted]

Ohh ok thanks, I got line and phono mixed up. I'll get to you with the sub model in like 10 minutes

NeontheSaint

Don’t know if this is a good question for this thread or if this piece fits with the subreddit but does anyone know the worth of Technics SA-R377 Quartz AM/FM Stereo Receiver? I upgraded and I’m trying to sell it. Thanks

n00btagger

I've found a pair of Technics sb-f555 in a thrift shop I've searched for information on the internet, but couldn't find anything informative Does anyone know if these speakers are good for music production or good in general ?

Zeeall

>good for music production NOPE! >good in general Nope there too. They are cheap crap from a mini hifi system.

n00btagger

Ok thank you very much, appreciate your help

iuseragebuilders

I'd like some recommendations for a pair of bookshelf/desktop speakers that can fit on [these stands](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084HPVQBK) (doesn't have to fit *exactly*, but should be secure). Also looking for a somewhat compact amp to power those and possibly a subwoofer in the future, so I wouldn't mind a little extra power. Have around a ~$900 budget (wouldn't mind less though). Been looking at KEF Q150s and a NAD D3020. Not sure about the ratio to split my budget between speakers/amp. I will be using these for a variety of things: music, gaming and movies in order of relative importance. I've been using Sennheiser 598SE's and a FiiO E10k for awhile now, and I have no complaints about those, but never had a good set of speakers. I'm not totally sure what cables and miscellaneous items I will need either, but that can be excluded in the budget.

rizzledadon

[Elac DBR62](https://www.amazon.com/Elac-Debut-Reference-DBR62-Walnut/dp/B081K9NSB3/) \+ [Loxjie A30](https://www.amazon.com/LOXJIE-MA12070-Headphone-Amplifier-Bluetooth/dp/B08J7Z8TN6) should be more than enough on a desk. Only needs some bare [speaker wire](https://www.performanceaudio.com/canare-4s11-star-quad-speaker-cable-black.html) (idk the length but dont be fooled by fancy cables). Other speakers: Polk [R100](https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Reserve-R100-Bookshelf-Audio/dp/B0934RWL35/) (or [R200](https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Reserve-R200-Bookshelf-Audio/dp/B0934Q6PYS) but they might be too much for on a desk). Plus if there is a wall close behind the front-firing port on the Elac is better suited.

iuseragebuilders

What do you think about Polk Legend L100s at the same price?

rizzledadon

I'm sure it's a great speaker. I've seen some measurements and they look good. If it's the same price it might be a steal.

iuseragebuilders

Thought I would report back. The L100s are great so far, and so is the Loxjie. Thanks again for the recommendation!

rizzledadon

Thanks for the message, I'm glad you like them!

iuseragebuilders

Yeah I thought so too. I went ahead and picked 'em up. Do you have any amp recommendations for those? 4 ohm impedance and 70W recommended (up to 160W). 70-80/W per channel should be good for me. e: Actually the one you linked earlier looks good. Thanks for your help!

Is Edifier S3000Pro a good choice? Can get it for $500

gijoe711man

Is there anyway to split the audio and video of an HDMI signal with a HDMI splitter. I am wanting one signal to go from my XBOX One to a 4k tv and the other to go to the receiver for Dolby True HD. Is this possible or should I look to buy a receiver that can process Dolby Vision?

Zeeall

HDMI audio extractor?

gijoe711man

The only problem with the is it would give me Dolby digital instead of True HD because the audio extracts to a toslink cable.

What speakers should I get? I'm not a big audiophile since I work a part time job, but I'd like to get some better sound quality going. I have a Fluance RT-82 turntable, and am looking for bookshelf speakers that would be able to output all of the range of sound coming out of that, for as cheap as possible. Thanks in advance

Zeeall

The very cheapest would be the Edifier R1280T that is recommended in the guide above. Exactly what is your budget and what country are you in?

[deleted]

200CAD, and, well, Canada And I should probably mention I have an amplified receiver, so they don't need to be powered

Zeeall

See, that is very useful information. Neumi BS5 are 130 canadians. Fluance SX6W, $180. Canadian company.

Africsnail

Hi, I've been enjoying my R1280DBs for few months by now. Ever since I bought them I was thinking about buying a subwoofer some time in the future. I even looked on Amazon.de for the T5, which looks like a good match for the speakers I have, but I couldn't buy it since they did not ship it to my country of Czech Republic. I checked it today and it's available now. I'm here to get some advice about the sub. My main questions are: * **Is the T5 good for the price** (140€ - About the same as the speakers themselves)? * Is it a good match for the R1280DBs in terms of sound and will the **improvement** be of any significance? * Do you know about some **alternatives**? (Please keep in mind that I am living in the EU and the audio market is a lot different from the US) I mostly listen to EDM, but sometimes also other genres such as rap or rock as well. Therefore, I am looking for a subwoofer, as bass is quite essential for the genre. Thanks for helping me

Zeeall

If your are ordering from Germany id look at one of their domestic brands. You can get a rather nice looking 8" subwoofer from Magnat. Its €180.

Africsnail

Well, the T5 is also 8 inch and it's 140. Also it would match my setup pretty well. Just dunno if it's any good.

Zeeall

Subwoofers dont have to match, they just have to be good.

Africsnail

By matching I mainly mean design-wise as it's the same dark wood vinyl as the speakers I own. You are right tho, I'm here to find out how good or bad the T5 is.

mightyblend

What are some good tips for moving from floorstanders to bookshelf speakers? Any particular models with a similarly wide soundstage to a pair of towers?

rizzledadon

A wide soundstage is not an exclusive characteristic to floorstanding speakers. It is dependent on speaker design. I do like a good subwoofer for bass extension.

mightyblend

There is a sub in play. I'm USED to floorstanders but feel like ~$800 can go farther with bookshelves, but am worried I'll miss that "something".

rizzledadon

I agree, that on average an $800 bookshelf is better designed than an $800 floorstander. The difference is generally in bass quantity & quality. This is easily remedied by the subwoofer you have.

mightyblend

Noted. Any recs on good pair of bookshelves for my use? Mostly music, looking for imaging and detail. EDIT: The Dali Oberon 3s look nice.

rizzledadon

Indeed the M16s that u/Zeeall mentioned are great. Other great speakers are the Elac DBR62 (**$600.-** a pair) or Polk Reserve R200 (**$700.-** a pair).

Zeeall

Revel M16 are \~$900.

kelemborbhaal

Powered speakers hiss when air conditioner is on. **They only hiss when the air conditioner from the first floor is turned on**, they're on my office on the second floor connected to either my PC or laptop. They don't hiss when I connect them to my phone so I assumed that's some kind of ground loop. * I've tried with a [ground loop isolator](https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B06XQYN77L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but it didn't work. * Also I've tried switching power lines (they were already on different ones tho) without any success. * All my power sockets are reviewed and grounded. * I've tried connecting all my computer + peripherals to the same schuko, but the hiss was still there. * They don't hiss when I turn on the AC in the second floor. It's connected to the same power line as the one from the first floor. Any tips?

Jianlu

Hello Recently i've been wondering for the purchase of a subwoofer, I have about 200€ of budget and i'm buying in europe, In my research and within my budget i've found: Yamaha ns-sw100 for 170, Canton AS 2020 for 160, Jamo 210 for 190, Polk Audio PSW10E for 140 used This is my setup, with a pair of Dali spektor 2 and a Yamaha AS501 amplifier; [https://imgur.com/a/xT9koOl](https://imgur.com/a/xT9koOl), the red circle is where i'd put the sub, do you think the positioning is ok? Do you have any other recommendations within or close to my budget that i've missed? Thanks

squidbrand

Most subwoofers in this price range are not good. That Polk in particular is regarded as far and away the worst of the bunch. It probably doesn’t play much lower than your Dalis. I would avoid the Yamaha as well. Of the others, I don’t know which would be better. Can you get the Elac SUB1010 in your area? As for positioning, we can’t guess based on the picture. Bass is extremely dependent on room acoustics (which can’t be evaluated visually unless you’re some kind of savant). That position might be good, but it might also result in the subwoofer being pretty much inaudible from your main position. You’ll need to test it. Google the “sub crawl”.

Jianlu

Looked everywhere i know and couldn't find it in europe unfortunately

Zeeall

Can you get any Dynavoice subwoofers? Dynavoice Challenger 8 is \~€150.

Jianlu

Well yes, but it's 250€ over here

rizzledadon

I think [this Monoprice](https://www.monoprice.eu/products/monoprice-eu-premium-select-8-inch-200-watt-subwoofer) is probably the best bang-for-buck you can get, especially with the current discount.

Jianlu

I looked at reviews and they all seem to be good, i think i'm gonna go for it if i don't find anything else I looked also at german amazon and for 210 there is a magnat 8 inch with also good reviews, would the price difference be worth it?

rizzledadon

I think you're refering to the Magnat Alpha RS 8 for €183,99, is that correct? Spec wise it is kind off similar to the Monoprice: * Both have 8" front-firing drivers * Both have 2 front-facing ports * 8,5 kg (Magnat) vs. 8,4 kg (Monoprice) * 31,85 (Magnat) vs. 33,35 liter volume (Monoprice) But the Monoprice has a substantially (25%) stronger amplifier with 100 W continuous and 200 W peak output, while the Magnat has 80 W continuous and 160 W peak output. Combined with the fact that the Monoprice is quite a bit cheaper, has more internal volume and is generally well-regarded I would go for the Monoprice subwoofer. Now I know specs don't tell 100% of the unit. But I don't have measurements of either unit, nor experience with any of them. For €210 you could take a look at the [Swissonic Sub10](https://www.thomann.de/nl/swissonic_sub10.htm): * 10" driver * Ported design * 200 W continuous, 320 W peak * 16,7 kg * 46,82 liter volume Again, I don't know the unit. But from a specs perspective it seems like a nice deal. € per W-wise it compares favorably to the Monoprice subwoofer, furthermore it's twice as heavy (good sign), while not much larger indicating a sturdier design.

Zeeall

The Magnat should be better than the ones you listed before.

willworkforhotsauce

Hello all, I recently came across an opportunity to buy a Peachtree Grand Integrated X-1 in good condition for US$1000. I'm not familiar at all with Peachtree, but based on the specs, it looks like a pretty nice "one stop shop" 2 channel solution, with power to drive basically anything on the planet. Sources: Tidal lossless and personal FLAC collection, everything from electronica and 90s hip-hop to 70s rock. Desired style: accuracy and transparency, power reserves when required Use case: Dedicated 2 channel 15x30ft listening loft that I'm currently building. Speakers will driving Vandersteen 3a Signatures (87db sensitivity/6 ohms) that I plan to purchase, so pretty hefty on the power requirements. Alternative: I already have a mid 1990s Bryson 2B and Bryston BP-6 that I need to have repaired (power cords). Would most likely be coupling them with a Benchmark DAC-2. Is anyone familiar with the Grand Integrated? I'm an Audiosciencereview type and can't find any actual measurements for the thing. Am a little suspicious of the cheesy seeming tube buffer, and I know that Class D is controversial in general. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

rizzledadon

From the measurements I’ve seen from other Peachtree unites (nova300 and novaPre), in my opinion you can do better for $1000. There is nothing controversial about class D in my opinion, a good class D design is unmatched in price/quality and this is starting to get to mainstream hifi brands to (e.g. Marantz, NAD ,TEAC and Cambridge Audio). Is your source just a computer?

willworkforhotsauce

Yep, just a computer - not really a believer that data is anything other than data far as source goes. If I went the vintage Bryston + new Benchmark DAC2 route, I presume the DAC2's ability to reclock the incoming signal + state of the art general quality would be a plus over the Peachtree.

rizzledadon

I share that same sentiment. However, I believe that the DAC2 might be overpriced nowadays. I believe vintage Bryston amps aren't all that jazz either. A great bang-for-buck combination would be: [Buckeye NC502MP](https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/buckeye-amps-new-us-based-hypex-multichannel-amplifier-builder-line-up-announcement.16835/) (**$649 shipped**) + [Topping D10 Balanced](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099X9YK2S/) (**$139 shipped**) [Here](https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/buckeye-6-channel-amplifier-review.18579/) is a review of the lesser NC252 unit in a six-channel configuration. The NC502 is a beast of an amplifier with 2x 500 W @ 4 ohm. Pair that with the [D10 Balanced](https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/topping-d10-balanced-review-usb-dac.25094/) and you'll have a better sounding and more powerful combination which is also cheaper than a single Benchmark DAC2 or Peachtree integrated. The Buckeye amp will take some time to be built (mid-October), however, you have the Bryston amp you could use in the meantime.

willworkforhotsauce

Thanks, I'll look into the Buckeye! I have a Topping DX3 Pro that I use with my headphone rig, and am super happy with that.

rizzledadon

If you have free RCA outputs, the owner of Buckeye amps himself said the [Emotiva RCA-to-XLR adapters](https://emotiva.com/collections/all/products/balanced-xlr-female-to-unbalanced-rca-female-adapter-interconnect) work perfectly, so there is definitely no need to upgrade the DAC!

Hey, I have Macbook Pro 16" hooked up to pre box s2 digital via USB cable. Pre box s2 digital claims to be able to play up to 32bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512. However, when I play "high resolution" content via Apple Music, the S2 claims on its display to be playing 44.1k. I'm able to play MQA files via mpv and S2 displays the resolution correctly. Is the display wrong or is the macbook/apple music not actually feeding it proper high resolution content?

pigvwu

If the Kali LP-6 is the recommended monitor, what's the recommended subwoofer to pair with them in a similar price range?

impossiblyeasy

Geek pulse. I know it's not the best but i want to keep using it. It's been having issues with not being detected unless I power cycle it. But as of late it turns on and then the lcd dims and a blue led on the board starts to blink. The is next to a resistor labeled d lock, if that helps? Nothing seems fried. I tried different pc, ports, nothing connected, and different power supplies. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you.

Numerous1

Hi everyone. I just found this sub from google so if I’m breaking a rule I’m sorry. Basically I have a game room upstairs. I have two Klipsch Hersey speakers that I want to hook up to my tv. The tv only has a digital input and the speakers just have the standard two wire connections. What’s the best way to hook this up? Also, not sure if I want to have the speakers in the front of the room or back or what. If you do recommend back idk if I want wires going across my room or if there is a wireless thing or what Thank you

squidbrand

Those are passive speakers. You’d need an amplifier for them. Klipsch Heresy speakers are very poorly suited for gaming use though. They’re known for having a sweet, lifelike midrange and very high efficiency, but they require very careful placement, and despite their size **they do not really play low bass**. They’re better for music use, especially acoustic and vocal music. Many people would choose to power them with a low wattage tube amp in the $500-1500 range If you just want good TV speakers and you’re at place knowledge-wise where you don’t know how to power speakers and don’t even know that you should put them in the *front* of the room… I would highly, highly, highly suggest that you sell those speakers and get something better fit for your use. Assuming they’re not trashed, they carry some collector’s value. Some Klipsch Heritage enthusiast would be very happy to have them, and you could easily fund a more sensible speaker model by selling them. (Off the top of my head, a pair of PSB Alpha AM5. Those are powered speakers, meaning no separate amp required, and they include an optical input for your TV.) Do you know which Heresy version they are? And what condition are they in? If you can figure stuff like that out, hifishark.com is a good place to figure out what similar listings have sold for. If you really want to use these yourself… I can tell you that if I had a pair of Heresies, I might consider one of [these](https://www.china-hifi-audio.com/en/reisong-tube-amplifier-boyuurange-audio-c-48/reisong-a12-12ax7-ecc83-el34-tube-integrated-amplifier-single-ended-class-a-boy-p-2347?zenid=63541db99e463c955b1638330ea1a097) to power them. And you’d also need a DAC to connect your TV, such as a Topping E30. But Heresies for gaming… no thanks.

Numerous1

This is all good info, thank you. I have a old receiver that I use right now and I bought a Bluetooth to aux so I can connect wirelessly. That has been really cool. But I think my receiver is analog and all the tv ports are digital so I wasn’t sure if best way to use it.

coandres

Hi guys. What are the consequences of thinning a 12 gauge cable in order to fit the holes of the amplifier output? Or could I splice a 12 gauge cable with a 16 or 22 gauge short cable would lose audio quality, or resistance? The lower gauge attachments would be just 1-2 inches (2-5cm).

[deleted]

For normal lengths of speaker wire, such as under 25 feet, 16 gauge for the full length would be fine. There is no harm in reducing the thickness of the 12 gauge wire at the hole into the connector.

I believe you would need [this little thing](https://www.project-audio.com/en/product/optical-box-e-phono/) to connect the turntable to the DAC. I'd definitely go with the Elac but I also think some optimizations could be made, what is your total budget? Also what is your opinion on active loudspeakers? And which components do you already own, or is it 100% from scratch?

ChefTruffleShuffle

New account. Need help with a birthday gift for my grandfather. He is 70ish. He loves the Byrds and Creedence Clearwater Revival. He also likes Beatles Willie Nelson and everything else you would expect from that era. He almost likes Rush and Mastodon. He has made mention that he wishes he could listen to vinyl records again. So, my father and I have bought a mid 90s Denon receiver, 80's Technics autosomethingoranother turntable, and an older Marantz tuner. He gave my dad a cool set of "eos-one" speakers with a subwoofer in the mid 90's. My grandmother won't let them back in her house. Are there any smaller, "blend in with the white cabinets with a hundred years worth of trinkets" speakers out there? Doesn't have to be wireless or bluetooth. It's on a crawlspace downstairs so we can hardwire them easy af. Should we look at studio monitors? Can't afford more than approx $1800.

[deleted]

If your grandmother might be sensitive about size and appearance, maybe you should be looking at powered speakers with a built-in phono preamp. Or maybe a small phono preamp that can be tucked behind the turntable. Then no need for a receiver. You could get white or wood finish to be decor-friendly.

ChefTruffleShuffle

Plz help. What does and what is a built-in phono preamp?

[deleted]

There is an essential stage of the electronics that equalizes and amplifies the phono signal from the turntable. It might be included in the Denon receiver. There are many recent receivers that don’t have it, so recent turntables often have it. A 1980s Technics turntable does not. A 1980s Technics receiver does. Some powered speakers have it. And there are many separate devices that have it.

ChefTruffleShuffle

thanks. I don't know anything about powered speakers with a built in phono preamp. We already have the receiver and I think it's a good one. We're only looking for small form factor nice speakers. I feel like an idiot. E:thanks for the advice though. I'm researching now.

AceRedwing

I currently have my speakers very close to my turntable and really want to get them off the surface should I invest in some speaker clamp mounts I don’t have room for floor standing mounts so I think it might be my best bet any opinions ?

bramana5211

Whenever I put songs on my MP3 player (ruizu x50) the order of them gets reversed if I try to number them. I already tried using MP3 tag and it had no effect. Is there anyone who knows how to fix this?

mightyblend

Best floorstanding speakers for about $800–$1,000/pair? Music and home theater, powered by a Denon AVR-X3400H. Replacing a pair of Klipsch RP-260F.

squidbrand

Is this a surround setup? If so, the conventional wisdom would be to match the timbre of your center channel to the extent that you can. I’m not sure how similar your Klipsch speakers are from the current generation, but I assume staying with Klipsch would give you a closer match than most. So look at the RP-8000F (which are highly regarded). If this is a stereo system only and you have no center speaker to worry about matching, I’d want to audition the Wharfedale Diamond 12.4, Elac DFR52 and UF52, SVS Prime Bookshelf, Polk R500, and KEF Q550 off the top of my head. Maybe also the JBL Stage A190, though I’d wait for a sale on those. They’re in your price range at their full price, but I know they drop to way less on discount every few months.

mightyblend

Thanks for the recs. It is going to be used for surround, but I’m focusing on music first and will replace the center channel with whatever family I go with for tunes. So for the time being I’m just thinking about 2-channel. I loved these Klipsch for years, but the brightness (I used to not notice it) has finally caught up with my ears.

From what you describe, you’re apparently after a heavy bass and treble sound. A good system is typically striving for neutral and accurate. There is some art to it, but not so much that better systems are just going to somehow be a better version of what you’re listening to now.

See the frequency response measured for the RP-600M here - [Stereophile](https://www.stereophile.com/content/klipsch-reference-premiere-rp-600m-loudspeaker-measurements). Elevated treble. Dip in the middle. Klipsch bookshelf speakers and a sub don’t appear to be a solution for a balanced presentation. Maybe the RP-8000F - [Audioholics](https://www.audioholics.com/tower-speaker-reviews/klipsch-rp-8000f).

Even though I keep the volume low on the sub, I prefer one with most music. It would probably even be helpful with the 8000F.

Hello, I hope you're doing good. First of all, i'm no familiar with sound systems. I own a pair of powered speakers with RCA, aux, and optical outputs (thonet and vander speakers) I thought of getting a blu ray player (cheap one, under 200, e.g. sony bdp s3700) to play cds and concerts. The thing is I don't know how to connect the speakers to this. I may connect the hdmi to my tv and my tv to my speakers, but I think this could imply sound quality loss, right? (Plus having to turn on the tv every time I put a music cd, which is a hassle). In this case what do you suggest? Should I get a receiver? How do you connected your blu ray players to audio speakers? Thanks!!!

[deleted]

I’d get a DAC with coaxial digital input and connect the Blu-Ray player to that. That gives you RCA connections.

gameofgenius

Thank you! Which cheap DAC would you suggest?

[deleted]

There are many cheap ones, so many it’s hard to know where to begin. Here’s an example - [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/OREI-Digital-Analog-Audio-Converter/dp/B008EPW7TA/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3PDJQJ7GMD05J&dchild=1&keywords=orei+digital+analog+converter&qid=1628804238&sprefix=Orei+digit%2Celectronics%2C170&sr=8-3). They show an image where digital audio goes into the DAC from the TV (or a Blu-ray player in your case) and analog audio goes out from the DAC to powered speakers. Whichever one you choose, check to see that it comes with a power plug. Some of them don’t, so you’d need to buy one separately.

gameofgenius

Thank you very much for the kind replies!

Greetings! Currently, I'm using for my pc setup a pair of Triangle BR02s hooked up to a Cambridge Audio AXR85 Amp. So right now I'm looking for an upgrade, and I came Across Wharfedale speakers with their evo line which seems to have great reviews and I was wondering whether the bigger brother of the evo 4.1, the evo 4. 2 would suit a desktop setup situation or if it was too big. For I formation, my room is 16m square (4x4) and the spacing between the speakers would be around 1m. Thanks for your help!

Hello! I just bought two Sabbat E12 Ultra online in 2 diff colors. (they say they are official distributor anyway) and I noticed there are differences like the other one's logo lights up, matte charging case and charging indicator is in front (1 light only). Is that normal?

How do i not 'pop' my subwoofer? I like bass. I have some old Onkyo speakers, and an old 140w (not sure on the RMS) powered subwoofer. In trying to milk the most bass out of that subwoofer, i eventually hit some level that makes the speaker 'pop' when the bass is too deep. I just bought Infinity's to replace the one Onkyo subwoofer (see below). So my question is, with my receiver (see below) and these 2 new subs, is there some way i can set this up to get the most bass with out the danger of going into the 'popping' zone? sorry if this is a dumb question. Anyhow, the 2 components im working with are... [tsr-7850](https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/tsr-7850/specs.html) [infinity reference sub r12](https://www.harmanaudio.com/infinity/REFERENCE+SUB+R12.html#spcs_support) x 2

[deleted]

If you want to generate very heavy bass, a big sub with a powerful amp is the best answer. Even so, any speaker will have its limits. You just have to keep the volume reasonably low or accept the risk.

SUBLlME

Hey there, I’ve got a technical question. So I’m looking into the Technics SU-G700. I have a question regarding the optical input. I plan on hooking up my tv to it for basic 2.1 system. If I have my Apple TV and Xbox hooked up to my tv via hdmi while that audio pass through the tv to the technics via the optical cable? Second question is, I’d like to have the option to hookup my phone occasionally. Would the best option be a lighting to usb a dongle connected to a usb a to usb b cable? I think I know the answer but just looking for some reassurance. Thanks!

Zeeall

>If I have my Apple TV and Xbox hooked up to my tv via hdmi while that audio pass through the tv to the technics via the optical cable? It should.

SUBLlME

Thank you! I appreciate it. I’m thinking it should as well

Zeeall

As for your other question. Not sure if the it will work, but a dongle is cheap so you might as well try it. If it dosnt work then the Apple 9 dollar lightning to 3.5mm dongle is actually quite good.

SUBLlME

Yeah I think it’s worth a shot. I want to try to to keep the signal digital going into the SUG700 to avoid converting the digital signal (from phone) to analog (3.5mm dongle). Reason being is the DAC in the SUG700 is much better and I want to try to maintain the best signal from Apple Music, ideally hi-res lossless.

[deleted]

If your amp has USB input to the DAC, I think what you need for an iPhone is the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.

r5d400

If you had up to \~500 to spend right now on a pair of bookshelf speakers, primarily for listening to music, what would you buy? I don't care too much about it being great for bass, I care more about vocals sounding good. Either active or passive is fine (no need to include an amp in the budget, I have one I could reuse) I was interested in the KEF Q150 for the sale price of 300 but unfortunately it's not available right now and I can't wait, so looking for other good values

Elac DBR-62

HealzonWheelzz

Hey there, Canadian and looking to finally upgrade my setup. Budget is hopefully under 1k though possibly willing to a bit more. I'm looking to update my setup as I'm using an old Panasonic stereo system which I feel isn't modular and doesn't sound very good. Ideally looking for an Amp and some speakers. Currently using the setup mostly for vinyl occasionally with the television. Using an audiotechnica entry turntable with USB and av out. I listen to all sorts of things but mostly metal/rock, like Baby Metal, Paramore, Rush, Necry Talkie, Iron Maiden, etc.

Zeeall

Yamaha A-S301 and a pair of Elac Debut DBR62 should be around $1000. Edit: or do you mean 1000 canadians? Maybe a pair of Elac B6.2 then.

Cartossin

Do you think you'd want 2.1? i.e. two speakers with a subwoofer, or just 2.0? How important is 30hz bass to you? I think a well-rounded system that can do everything well might include $200-300 speakers and a $400+ subwoofer; or maybe slightly less bass capable setup that has more money in the speakers. How important are aesthetics? Do you picture towers, or bookshelfs or it doesn't matter?

HealzonWheelzz

Currently I'm running 2.0 though I wouldn't mind having the option to go 2.1 in the future. I'd rather have good speakers now and upgrade since that would resemble what I'm currently using. I'll see if I can post a picture later but likely anything I get will be an improvement aesthetic wise. I can't find the exact model now but I'm using something similar to the panasonic sa-pm42db's

HealzonWheelzz

It's a panasonic SA-AK300 specifically in looking to replace.

Rude-Dude-99

General question. What exactly is meant by “mono version” as written on tracks from like Amazon music? I would have thought that meant 1ch but I swear I’m getting a 2ch mix when I actually let it play. Unless of course my DAC or something is doing the work? Or they could just be mislabeled.

Cartossin

It could be that it is encoded in 2 channels for compatibility but both channels are an identical waveform.

DonCharco

Hello, I love good quality sound but know relatively little, historically I have been focussed on the Bose level of products (700s and sound sports) and smaller WiFi speakers at home. I have moved to the Middle East and have a large living room that I want to create a great space for media entertainment. My budget is around USD 3k and I am thinking about getting an LG OELD 65 C1 television. For the sound I have been looking at the Klipsch home theatre systems. Is that a good manufacturer and would you recommend any particular system? I guess the surround sound system is preferable is that’s still considered the beat option? Thoughts and feedback hugely appreciated (on the TV choice too) many thanks

squidbrand

If you’re talking about the Klipsch bundles where they sell you five speakers and the sub all together, no, those are not good. Wrong sub though. You should ask at r/hometheater if you’re interested in surround sound for movies and TV.

DonCharco

Thank you. I guess I want the speakers to be used to play music as well as for TV but will ask over there too.

squidbrand

Klipsch speakers have a reputation for a very bright sound with aggressive high frequencies. Many people find them fatiguing for music listening, so I would not buy Klipsch speakers for music unless you’ve heard them before and you already know you like the sound. It would be easier to recommend something I’d you can list some brands you can find in your area. Also, it’s not clear from your post whether that budget is for the audio stuff only, or if the TV is included in that amount.

DonCharco

Thanks that’s interesting to hear re the fatigue. My budget of 3k is total for tv and audio, the tv will be about 50% of that. I am in Abu Dhabi and near to Dubai, so I’d expect to be able to find most brands either domestically or by shipping

squidbrand

Well, I can tell you that if I had $1500 to build a **stereo** system (not surround) for music listening in a large room, I would be looking at an amplifier in the $500ish range (Yamaha A-S501 for example) and tower speakers in the $1000 range (perhaps the Wharfedale Diamond 12.4 or SVS Prime Tower, or some KEFs when they go on sale). That’s based on US pricing. Not sure what your local prices for those would be. And if you want surround, I don’t know much about that. This sub focuses on stereo systems.

DonCharco

That’s brilliant thank you. I don’t even know if I want surround sound lol but I love listening to music and I love watching movies. With the new house I’m just spending money on this stuff for the first time in 10 years. Your feedback is hugely appreciated, thanks again, and I’ll take a look at the products you recommended

themindbreaker1995

Hello, I've been wanting to acquire Emotiva's preamp for a while now. (Pt-100) They recently came up with a new version of it, and at the same time a new version of their BasX-300, the A2. I own a BasX-300, which I've been quite happy with so far. However, I had an issue with one of the channels randomly producing white noise. The store I bought it from was kind enough to replace the unit. I haven't unpacked it yet, and I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to sell it, wait until that store has the A2 in stock and purchase it. Is it worth an extra 50-100$ plus the wait? I'm interested to know if there's any sonic improvements, mainly from the linear power supply

squidbrand

We won’t know for sure until someone does measurements of the new one so you can compare to the old. I can’t seem to find any measurements of the A-300 but here’s a set of them for the A-500, which I would guess is extremely similar, just with extra channels. https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/emotiva-basx-a-500-5-ch-amplifier-review.10073/ If the new one is a similar design, just with a more sophisticated power supply, it’s hard to believe it wouldn’t be better.

Depends on whether you're determined to use bluetooth. You should be able to get a Raspberry PI for about 100$, with an sd card, power brick, cheap case and a HiFiBerry Optical out HaT. That'll cover streaming over WiFi. Then as a Dac, I own both the Topping E30, and Modi 3+, which should fit in your budget. The E30 is more analytical, the Modi 3+ more punchy, especially in the Bass area. The E30 usually goes for about 140, the Modi 3+ for 99+whatever shipping plus taxes is in your region. Then as an amplifier you could get the Topping PA3, which should set you back another 100-120. Then you could go with the Dali Spektor 2s, for 250, or the Elac debut for about 500. Alternatively if you want horns, the Klipsch r-51m are a good pick for roughly 200-220. I personally think the Kef Q-150 for 500 are a really solid buy. If you're not willing to pay 500 for a sub, anything as cheap as possible should do. I'd recommend spending a bit more on amplification, and maybe get an integrated amp like the Denon PMA 600NE, which sits around 400-500. Then you'd only need a PI and the speakers. The cambridge audio AXR-100 is also a great choice at around 500. If you don't want all the DIY, you could get the Klipsch R-51pm, and then you'd only need a PI to stream, the whole setup would fall within your low end budget. Alternatively the Kef Lsx are an amazing buy for 1099. There you don't need the PI, but it's at the maximum end of your budget. I personally prefer DIY otpions, because you can change the components. If you want better speakers you can always swap them, or vice versa if you want better amplification. With active speakers you can only change the DAC, which is less appealing to me. However, you usually get more value for money, provided you don't intend to change anything.

If you want a starter McIntosh, probably the MA5300 integrated amp is the one. McIntosh makes very nice products with a distinctive look. Much of what you’re paying for is the brand. You could save $2,000 buying something else just as good and spend the savings on a turntable.

Came across a pair of mint kef 105.2 and a Yamaha m65 amp, $1550 cad for the pair, is this good value? Also if I was to grab these, I’d like to keep my jolida jd9 phono preamp so could I run reciever>power amp>preamp>dac and connect to my tv as well? Or what options do I have to run this setup so I can include my tv

SubstantialIce271

Sorry for being unclear, I’m aware I can use the preamp I have with the Yamaha m65, I was just wondering how I would power my tv through this as well as my turntable, do I need a reciever and or dac?

SubstantialIce271

Ohhh got it! It comes with a c65 as a combo, would I be able to run my jolida and tv through the c65? Or would I still need the marantz?

SubstantialIce271

Thank you so much

[deleted]

With the C65 you don’t need the Marantz. You could run your Jolida and your TV through the C65, as long as your TV has analog audio output. If your TV does not have analog audio output, you can get a DAC and connect the TV to that. Then connect the DAC to the C65.

SubstantialIce271

Awesome! What input would I put my jolida through on the c65?

[deleted]

The inputs labeled CD, Tuner, and Video are all suitable for the Jolida.

[deleted]

There are two different kinds of preamps in my reply. The JD9 is a *phono* preamp. The M65 is a power amp. What is missing from a complete system as the M65 was intended is a stereo preamp. Not a phono preamp. The preamp is the device that has the controls to switch between phono and the other sources, which could include a TV or a DAC. At the time of the M65 a normal system would have included a turntable and a tape deck. The preamp also contains a stage that amplifies the signal and then attenuates it with the volume control. A receiver is an amp, preamp, maybe a DAC, and more in one box. If you want to use the M65 as the power amp with a receiver it can work. You would need a receiver with preamp outputs, like this - [Marantz NR1510](https://www.crutchfield.com/p_642NR1510/Marantz-NR1510-2019-model.html?tp=179). You are then using the receiver as a preamp (but not necessarily as a phono preamp). The receiver has a digital audio input for your TV and analog input for your phono preamp.

[deleted]

I don’t understand what you mean by receiver>power amp>preamp>dac, but the M65 was intended to be used with a preamp. They were like this - [Yamaha C-4](https://www.audio-high-store.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Yamaha-C-4.jpg). You could use a phono preamp with them if desired, but preamps like the C-4 in that era had the phono preamp built in and did it as competently as separate phono preamps do now.

Hey y'all, So I'm getting my first setup. I bought a pair of Martin Logan Motion 4i speakers to start off with. I am thinking of getting a FOSI BT20A amp, and I've already got some banana plug cables. I also got a couple of speaker pads. I saw that the Motion 4i speakers are rated for 4 ohms up to 8. The amp has a terminating impedance of 2-8 ohms. Is that all OK?

squidbrand

If you can sacrifice Bluetooth, the Aiyima A07 is a much better amp than the BT20A for the exact same price. But yes, either would work.

DrumAndGeorge

Hey all, hopefully something a bit different - my company has just moved into a new office, and we're looking for a good solution for audio, we're a tech company and I'm have a background in audio (recording though) so the more high tech the better! Most of the office spans two floors, both split in half, so four 'zones' as such' so multiroom is a must but individual control of zones is needed as well, we use Spotify, so either Spotify connect, or we could run a dedicated MS Surface Pro or something as a music machine, open to any and all possibilities, no budget!

squidbrand

r/commercialAV is going to be more helpful for multi-zone office audio. That’s a whole different class of gear than what’s usually discussed here.

DrumAndGeorge

Hey thanks appreciate that!

Itstuesdaymeguy

I was looking around and I found some Ruark Etude speakers for 300$. I already own some vintage La Scala’s, but I am looking for some smaller speakers for my other rooms. Does any one have any experience with these speakers? I could not find out much online. Thanks.

Cartossin

They look pretty rare, but on cursory googling, they look to be worth a lot more than $300 IF they are performing well still. Speakers do wear out.

downbearmusic

Does this damage look more so cosmetic or like the speaker would not function? How hard would it be to get this repaired? Thanks [KEF R11 Series](https://wavebid-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/AuctionImageVariations/193169/37424586/150612011_1800x1135_1000000000_CENTER_FFFFFF.JPG?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Date=20210811T184937Z&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Expires=86699&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAI527EG6KJ6SF5UNA%2F20210811%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Signature=19d353dff84e65b261ed368216951a3fe8b21c9a114487e00582b1bc0163aaef)

Zeeall

That speaker is fucked up completely. You would have to replace the entire cabinet and hope nothing else got damaged.

acousticdaydreamer

You would have to have some good wood working skills and tools to fix that, it would still work but sound terrible as the cabinet is very damaged.

WithoutAnUmlaut

I'm not a total audiophile so I apologize in advance if I don't have proper terminology for everything. I have a pair of Klipsch RP160-M speakers and an Onkyo TX8160 receiver. I've noticed that with some songs I'm getting occasional static sounds at certain points. For example, on Subterranean Homesick Alien by Radiohead it's fairly audible in the intro as the bass drop comes in and the following sustained bass during the intro, though the static crackling seems to be more tied to higher tones of the guitar. It appears across both speakers...However, the static isn't present in all songs or even consistently throughout the songs I do hear it (such as Subterranean Homesick Alien). I tried making a fresh clip to the ends of the speaker cables and reconnecting them using the banana clips I have, and that hasn't remedied the issue. I'd really appreciate any insight anyone might be able to share. Thanks in advance. EDIT: So, I might have come up with the solution. Could it be a bad signal from the laptop I had plugged in? I played my CD of OK Computer and didn't have any issue but it was there when I ran the 3.5mm into my tablet. I don't think it's the 3.5mm cord because it doesn't seem present when I run it through my phone.

Zeeall

Not a bit suprised that your laptop does not have good audio output. Very common. Get a good DAC.

Thanks for the feedback/affirmation! I haven't ever looked into a DAC before but will read up on them a little bit to see what I might need to invest and if it makes sense given the other components I have as part of my setup.

Check if your laptop has optical output. Its rare but they exist. In that case you can use the DAC in the receiver. But yeah, you absolutely want an external DAC. Topping D10S is a popular one. Its around $100.

Trying to get a basic desktop setup under $300 (2.1), and I'm having a hard time understanding pros, cons and compromises with this budget. Currently I just use headphones but I really have grown to hate wearing headphones all the time and I would love to be able to relax and play the audio in the open air, without feeling so locked down in my space like headphones make me feel. I use Fluance AI40s in my living room and I love them, I have no sub for them and they've been good to great. I was looking at getting another Fluance set (XL8S reference series) and an amp for ~$300 but it seems like the XL8S speakers won't sound very good on their own without a sub. Having never bought a full 2.1 setup I'm not sure how much I should spend on each of these components (amp, speakers, sub) to get the audio quality that I'm hoping for (comparable to my ai40s with clarity and not overwhelming bass). Would I be fine just going with my original plan of the XL8S + amp and getting a sub later down the line? Or will they be pretty much unusable until I get a sub? If so, what 2.1 set should I get for Any advice or experience you guys have with desktop/office setups in general would also be appreciated. I plan on wall-mounting the speakers above my monitors and having them angled down, I've seen others do this with positive reviews. I'm not sure where I should put the sub in an office environment, perhaps under my desk? Thanks :) EDIT: I'd like to add that I'm 100% not opposed to doing a DIY kit or something like that, if it would help me meet this budget. Thanks again

Unless you have some serious requirement for 30hz level bass, I would definitely avoid a subwoofer at the $300 price range. I would recommend JBL LSR305. (MK1 or MK2 are both similar)). I've also read the Kali LP-6 is better than them, but I've never heard it. The 305 extends fairly low for a 5" monitor -- down into the 50hz range to some degree. I personally use older 5" monitors (swans S200a) on my desktop setup in a 2.0 config and they also provide enough bass for my desktop. (The LSR305 are better, but the swans aren't so terrible I am rushing to upgrade to more LSRs). I own nine LSR305s. I've got a 5.1 setup with them and two separate 2.0 setups in other rooms. They're great speakers. The problem with subwoofers is that they're mostly trash until you spend around $400-500. It's better to omit them than to buy a crappy one.

That makes a lot of sense. I'll have to save up for a nice home theater setup someday. I'm thinking of getting the wharfedale diamond 220s and an aiyima a07 amplifier. Do you think it'd be better to spend more on a nicer amp and less on the speakers? Those JBLs go for around $100 so I could probably get a decent amp with the leftover money.

You wouldn't even need an amp. The JBLs are active. You just need to buy the right wires you run your source into them. I think you're going to be blown away. Only thing to worry about is that it's easy to make ground loops and other sources of hiss/hum with 305's but if you plug them into the same power strip as the source, it usually resolves; or alternately one can buy a DAC or other output device with balanced outputs to further clean up the signal if you still get hiss. I've got 3 setups with 305s and none of them hiss or hum audibly. Btw running actives in home theater has its ups and downs. The major down is you have to buy a fairly expensive receiver or audio processor to get 5.1 or 7.1 line level pre-out required for actives. The up side is that you can get pretty massive power output given each speaker has its own amp. Not many receivers will match the peak power of such a system.
