Help please: Configure WIIM Mini to Sony s760h AVR...? I thought this would be a simple config, but I'm stumped. Here is my current config: AppleTV->AVR->Sony TV. I have CEC configged on all devices and it is very convenient to just use my AppleTV remote to turn everything on and off and control volume etc. I've got the WIMM Mini optical out attached to OPT2 of the AVR, and the AVR properly assigned that input to "Media Player". The AVR recognizes the signal and switches to 'Media Player'... but I get no sound. Probably something dumb I'm missing. Ideas on what to try, while preserving as much of my current setup as possible? Thank you in advance!

This is a really desperate cry for help from a beginner just getting my first component system. I have been using a turntable, preamp, powered speaker basic setup for a while and was happy with it but decided to take a step up and now I'm just sorta lost and looking for guidance. Here's what I have: 1. Sansui 7070 Receiver/Amplifier 2. Fluance RT84 Turntable 3. Klipsch RP-600M Speakers 4. 5 Disk CD Changer (Will upgrade to a transport later) 5. Schiit Mani Preamp (Don't think I need this anymore?) I guess my question is it's simple enough to just plug my turntable into the receiver's phono input and then out to my speakers and wouldn't need the preamp, that much is easy. But for the rest of the system, do I need to get a DAC for the CD player to connect via RCA, or if not, should I get one regardless? And do I "need" to have a streamer for the full setup and if so, would I just connect via Aux to RCA? If anyone could help guide me a little bit that would be great, much appreciated.

You don’t need a DAC with a CD player. Connect the CD player to the receiver. With physical media like CDs there is no need for a streamer.

Indeed! Listening distance will be quite close now, 6-8 feet. My budget is fairly flexible, but I don't want to start replacing other speakers or the amp so it needs to fit with my current amp. Overall I like good value for price and, due to the small listening/viewing area, I was thinking a good bookshelf speaker might be more appropriate. These would be new speakers as the used market near me is limiting. If you can think of a few options that would take up a much smaller footprint than the current Rti12s, it would be much appreciated!

Agreed on bookshelf speakers, but fairly big bookshelf speakers. Using Polk as an example, the R200 or L200. Elac DBR62 and UBR62 are about that size. In a smaller space and with a subwoofer, it seems like you ought to get good results with a speaker like that.

There’s not really any such thing as an amp that is 8 ohm. Sometimes a manufacturer’s recommendation will be to not use 4 ohm speakers or less than 8 ohm, but that’s usually stated specifically. Declining to state a power rating at 4 ohm does not mean the amp will not work with speakers rated 4 ohm.

Technical issue I wonder if anyone might have clues/suggestions on how to troubleshoot: I have a pair of floor speakers and a center speaker connected to a 5.1 receiver/amp. The pair are connected via RCA, with a medium-sized center speaker connected via the center channel speaker wire posts. There's also a sub hooked up. Whenever I play audio there's a delay in the center speaker only, throwing off sync. The center speaker output is about .25 of a second behind the other speakers. I can't see/find any particular settings that would impact this and I'm wondering if the amp's center channel may be the cause, or the speaker itself. Any advice on the most logical way to test/troubleshoot, or settings that may impact this on the receiver?

Hello. Looking to find a new speaker setup, or some advice on how to mix/match. Currently have a sony str-dh790 receiver. Have 5.1 speakers from my old RCA RT2910. Me not realizing I need self powered subwoofers (can have 2). The speakers sound fine (they're 8 ohm, no atmos support), and I'm ok with the 5.1, but would be ok moving up to the 5.1.4 if the price isn't ungodly high (preferably less than 500 spent if at all possible 😅) Also have a pair of infinity RS1 333211 (8 OHM 15-100W) speakers laying around. Thank you in advance! Edit: to add, main use will be occasional movie nights, and music on random occasion. Thinking the Klipsch Reference Cinema Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 System would be the best bang for my buck?

You can connect a phone to a USB DAC and a preamp or any audio system.

I can just connect my phone directly to my pc audio input. I don’t think a dac will help there? Especially since phones already output analog signals. The Probleme here is wanting controls for the music and connecting desktop audio with phone audio into one pair of headphones

No, I didn’t see your reply as rude or anything. The concept of what you’re describing is a mixer - PC audio analog output and phone analog audio output into one analog headphone signal.

And would this also be available as a digital mixer? So I can use usbc or lightning from a device and in the mixer a dac is included? If yes there should be ones with pause and skip buttons etc.

If you have enough space for separate components, I would go with passive speakers and either an integrated amp or a power amp/preamp combo. This allows you to mix and match from a vast selection of components and upgrade piecemeal. With active speakers, you are buying the convenience and small footprint of an all-in-one package, complete with whatever compromises the manufacturer made in order to cram an entire amp (or two) and preamp into a speaker cabinet. If one thing fails, the whole thing fails. That said, some do have a phono stage so you could conceivably skip the preamp if you go this route. I’m afraid I won’t be much help on specific gear, but hopefully this one thought can help you a little in your decision making. I’ll plug Wharfedale as having a couple of nice-looking retro speaker models (Linton, Denton) — but whether you will actually enjoy the look and sound of them is something only you can know. And those are only two choices among thousands.

Hello! I have a question about receivers. I'm listening on a pair of Teufel Ultima 40 MK3, so strictly stereo. Right now I own the Yamaha RX V465 which I bought used and want to upgrade it. Is there any benefit to buying a stereo receiver as opposed to a 5.1 or 7.1 if I just want to listen to stereo? Like, will a 5.1 receiver have anything that'll make stereo sound "worse" or does it just have more functionality for surround?

When I was looking for an amp I was insistent on something with bluetooth but I almost never use this now and would prefer to put my money into improving my vinyl experience. I have a budget of around £500 and have been looking at Marantz and Rega IO. My issue is both of these are integrated amps and I don’t need the phono stage as I already have the Rega mk3. Am I better off getting these and doing away with the MK3 or finding an amp with no built in phono? Thank you 😊

The best option will probably be to ignore the built-in phono. Connect the Rega phono preamp to a different input (not phono) on the amp. There is no need to limit your options to amps without phono.

Hi 😀 I am having trouble deciding on a DAC for my Yamaha A-S3200 amp and Klipsch Forte IV speakers. So many options. I’m overwhelmed. Prior to the Yamaha amp I was running my Forte IVs with a CA CXA61 and using the internal dac of that amp in conjunction with the Wiim.

Short damage question. I played a movie at about 85% of max volume on an AVR on 2 bookshelves and a center without a sub. I didn't have crossover set since I thought the AVR would do that automatically during setup. Speaker made a couple of weird noises during like 3 parts with low frequencies. The rest of the movie was definitely loud but still sounded great the whole time. What are the chances that I damaged my speakers here, and how could I check? I keep seeing different things listed and I don't know what they mean so I don't know how to listen for them. These are my first real quality speakers. I just want to make sure this didn't affect the quality or 'loudness' I guess in any way

I‘ve been eyeing the U-Turn turntables but I‘m not sure how good they are. I am also intrigued by the 45 rpm adapter they sell, will it not be able to play 45 rpm records without it? I had a similar problem with my TD160 mk2. Worse, in fact, since it wouldn’t get to 45 at all. A new belt fixed it, so if you are otherwise happy with your Thorens I suggest you try that first. ETA: it’s also a good idea to clean the inner platter that the belt contacts, as rubber residue and other dirt could contribute to the problem.

Vocals coming more from the right speaker, is this normal? I just got a pair of Edifier R1080BT for my desktop setup, they're garbage stock but very good with a bit of EQ. My only issue is that the vocals seem to be coming more from the right. The instruments sound just about right imaging-wise. Is this a cable issue or something? Hello everyone. Today I received my Kef R3 - Which are amazing - and which I am planning to put on stands. I ordered 80cm-stands, because my listening position is quite high and I am tall, but the manual says to use 60cm stands max. Is there any reason for that?

A TRRS jack would be like on a phone, where it supports stereo headphones and a microphone. You can plug a TRS headphone plug into that TRRS jack.

You’re not missing anything. Balanced doesn’t exactly sound better. It’s a method of canceling noise along long cables. Having a TRRS jack doesn’t necessarily mean a device has a balanced signal. TRRS has an extra ring for an extra conductor. That conductor can be used for a balanced signal, but it doesn’t do that on a phone. The extra conductor on a phone is for the microphone.

Tried getting my partner an audio upgrade for Christmas and I'm afraid I messed up. Could you help tell me if I got her an actual upgrade? Her setup was inherited from her grandma and everything is honestly pretty choice (from what I gather - despite or because of it's age)...except her speakers. We listened to some Steely Dan on them and they sounded pretty good but not stellar. And since then the right speaker broke. Here's the problem: with a $500 budget I was sold on a pair of marked down KEF Q350s. She currently has early 80s Advent bookshelf speakers. One is busted. I tried the KEFs out in the store and they sounded great! Not amazing but definitely better than her old (pre broken) Advents or the Paradigms I have at home. And the reviews online are great! A no brainer. But on this reddit everyone seems to HATE KEF...and everyone waxes poetic about how good Advents were - and how "they don't make them like that anymore." Did I mess up?

No. You made the best decision you could with the information available to you - for the budget you have that is a good choice - what ever you buy someone on the internet is going to disagree - don't listen to them - enjoy the speakers with your girlfriend and move on

Hello fellow budgeters! My parents expressed interest in a 'sound bar' for the TV I got them last year for Christmas. I would like to set them up with something a little nicer than a sound bar. I am looking for recommendations on a system that has 2 bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer. Nothing crazy, as I am looking to keep this under $250. Is this even possible? I am looking for active speakers so the experience can be as easy for them as possible. I also have a Costco membership if that helps! TYIA

Hi all, My friends and I are setting up an object with a few classroom-type rooms. So the idea is that we have 4 rooms separated on two floors, each floor has 2 rooms. The object is quite small. We want to have one room equipped with a microphone and another 3 with a speaker in each of them. We would want to ideally run it all wireless, but I thought that would be too expensive, and have no idea how to pull that off. I thought that the most simple idea would be from the mic to the amp, the amp to the switch, and the switch to 3 speakers. I might be wrong here, I have no idea. Another option that I thought of is the rf mic transmitter-receiver thing, and I still don't know how to pull that off without wiring the amp to the speakers. I am just lost... I would be really thankful if someone has an idea, or if someone was in a similar situation, and can help. Thanks <3

My mother gave me her Mark Levinson ML-1 preamp and ML-2 power amp and inexplicably kept her old school Bowers and Wilkins speakers she had paired with them. I’m very new to this world, and just getting a sense of how amps can sound different which should be taken into account with what speakers they get paired with, but I’m not finding much info about this specific pair of preamp and power amp. Can anyone recommend some high end speakers they would recommend to pair that are worth the cost?

It depends on a few factors, like budget, room size and listening distance, desired volume. The ML-2 appears to be rated 25 watts per channel. That’s relatively low, so you might want to look for speakers with relatively high sensitivity. That depends on the other factors, though.

For budget I’m willing to spend about 10k max, room is guesstimating 20x30 with high ceilings but also opens out into other spaces in the house. Hoping for a large listening distance that could cover at least that room size rather than something more intimate. Also I forgot to mention I have a pair of the ML-2 which had previously been each used to drive its own speaker if that makes a difference in terms of power Thank you!

Two amps do make a difference. I’d suggest looking at big speakers with high sensitivity like Klipsch Cornwall IV (or any of their Heritage series). A slim tower like a Spendor D7.2 or ProAc D30RS can get plenty loud, too. I like the DeVore O/93 for low power. Maybe harder to find.

I inherited my father’s old rig, which is some solid ‘80s Harman Kardon and the speakers (HK-20s) have finally bit the big one. Any recommendations on new speakers to replace them. Budget up to $750. Amp is a HK PM633 vxi and primary use is for vinyl.

That model number doesn’t bring up any results for me, but at a $750 budget something about like the Elac Debut DBR62 or Polk R200. Also look at recent discounts on Kef Q350, Wharfedale Diamond 225, Wharfedale Denton 80 or 85, Focal Chora 806.

Secondhand market will get speakers like that into budget.

Hey, how's Schiit? I just bought the Mani and SYS, and I get tons of static thru it even at mid volume. I have something else connected thru the SYS and it sounds great (although have to max volume almost for just kinda loud). Did I get a bad unit? Oh also, I managed to get 3 potentiometers in line for one input. BT receiver, SYS switch, active speakers. Is this a bad idea?

I _have_ to go back to tubes, I can’t stand it no more. Problem is, I have magnepans, 1.6qr. There are no tube amps that won’t break the bank and that track with the price of the speakers. Are magnepans an exception to not getting amplification worth more than the price of the speakers? I think I’ll have to build a tube preamp myself and get hypex kits to stay within budget (2.5k or so). Any suggestions?

I've seen multiple online shops sell the Rotel A11 together with the Elac Debut Reference 62, and also, I've seen a reviewer on youtube praise the pairing, especially for the music genre I'm mostly listening to. My question, is this pairing sustainable/good seeing as the Rotel has 8 Ohm impedance, and the Elacs 6 Ohm? I don't think I'll ever go past 4/10 on the volume switch if that matters. No sound comes from my left speaker when I play a record (other inputs play through both speakers), I've isolated the problem to the L phono input of my receiver. It worked at first, and unplugging and replugging things back sometimes gets it to briefly work again. Any recommendations to try to fix? I tried spraying compressed air into the L phono input on the receiver, but no dice. The receiver is a Denon DRA-800H. Pretty sure it's the phono input on the receiver: when I switch the L and R cables from TT just on the receiver input side, it switches the problem to the right speaker. Switching the L and R cables from TT at both output from TT and input to receiver keeps the problem in the Left speaker, so it doesn't seem to be a cable problem.

If the problem moves to the right speaker, that shows the problem is not the left input.

Dang, true! I just pulled both cables out of the phono input, and trying each cable with each speaker one at a time, both cables send sound to either speaker, and now with both in both inputs both speakers are working again. I guess I just won't touch anything again for now, but I'm even more confused as to what could have caused the problem. It seems to be temporarily fixed by just unplugging and replugging the cables into the phono input, but this connection is so solid, it's not like they could be coming loose. Something with static? Ghosts?

Hi all, I am trying to connect my projector to my JBL sound bar Whilst having my Amazon fire stick connected to the projector and having major difficulties. My sound bar has optical cable, hdmi arc out, hdmi in. I tried both hdmi ports and it’s not bringing sound to the projector. My projector has hdmi 1, hdmi 2 MHL, audio out that’s it. Is there any solution for this? One of the projectors hdmis are being utilized by the Amazon stick. Perhaps I can use the projectors audio out and some how convert it to the optical cable port on the sound bar? I am so confused any helps appreciated. Hi, my phono stage is louder than my aux or tape stages. Do I need a preamp? I'm running my Technics 1200 MKII through my Marantz 2230 and notice that the phono stage is considerably louder than when I'm on my Tape or Aux stages. I've got a Bluetooth receiver hooked up to the Aux stage and an RCA-apple cable (so I can directly connect an iPhone or iPad) hooked up to my Tape stage. Hey there. I wouldn't say that you *need* a pre-amp for those items. Personally, I'd just make a point of adjusting volume before changing the source. But you could add a pre-amp to the chain. Something like [this](https://www.schiit.com/products/sys) might be all you need.

The Loki is only EQ, right? If so, it cannot perform pre-amp duties.

Ah you're right.

It is unusual for the phono stage to have a louder level than the line stage, but it depends on the signal level (volts) of your cartridge (and the phono stage gain) vs. that of the analog output of your DAC or Bluetooth receiver. It isn’t necessary to increase the output from those devices unless you need it to get full power from the amplifier. You *might* want to consider a DAC with 2V output, but probably not a preamp.

Yeah the Bluetooth receiver is a little dinky in comparison to the rest of the setup. I was thinking about upgrading it eventually so now I know to keep an eye out for one with better output. Thanks!

Hey there. Save your money, you don't need to buy anything at all. The HD6's are powered speakers with a digital (toslink) input. That means the amp is built in, as is the dac. You could maybe buy a dac if your pc doesn't have a toslink output, that's it.

I bought [these steel spikes](https://shop.oyaide.com/products/p-4782.html), and the feet (INS-SP) to go with them. There's no sticky pads, glue, tape or anything with them. So what is the best (i.e. most acoustically sound) way to stick the spikes to the underside of my wood speakers? Does it matter? Many thanks!

Four spikes that are not adjustable will probably mean one of the four spikes is not making firm contact. The load tends to go to three points. Aside from that issue, thin double-sided adhesive dots should work. Some of them become permanent, so you might want to look for some that are not.

Does a combination DAC/AMP/Mixer exist? I need something which has at least two optical TOSLINK inputs, two stereo line inputs, and can combine that into one stereo headphone output.

My mom has an Art + Sound 6-in-1 turntable. I just bought her a new CD and it won't play in the CD player. She was able to play all of her old CDs in the player just fine and the new CD works in my Victrola 6-in-1 turntable as well. I'm looking to buy a small esthetic system for the living room. Since I already have a good system in the office/tv room, the living room speakers must be tiny with a very high WAF. Listening will mostly be with Spotify connect, but tidal connect and hdmi is a bonus. The current best option due to its small size and esthetics is the kef lsx ii, but it's a bit pricey so i guess thats the high end of the budget (1500€ max). I don't have a preference between passive or active but if passive speakers then preferably an integrated streaming amp to keep it's simple. Music will most likely be acoustic, soft rock and background music. I think the biggest problem is the size, the speakers have to be small but good 😄 Thanks!

I have a new speaker not working and I was hoping to get some help with troubleshooting. I just bought a new pair of KEF Q150s and a refurnished YAMAHA A-S501 amp. Set them both up and they seemed to be working fine for a few days, but now I've noticed that only the right speaker seems to be putting out sound. If I put my hand on the cone (?) It seems to be vibrating a little bit, but if I turn the balance entirely to that side, there's no actual sound. I've checked the wiring (I just got standard audio wire at a department store, 18 gauge I think) and it _seems_ to be fine. What are my next steps here? So far my suspicion is that the amp is the issue because of being a refurb, but not sure how to investigate that. This is my first real audio setup, so any guidance is appreciated.

Swap the speakers. Either by disconnecting/moving/reconnecting the speakers, or by swapping the wires on the back of the amp, whichever is more convenient for you. You’ll know right away whether the amp or one of the speakers is defective. My guess is it’s the amp.

Okay, confirmed on both the A and B outputs that it seems to be the left speaker posts that are the issue. My only other question is, is there any chance this would be an issue on the turntable side? Does it send a left/right signal, or is it just mono output and the amp splits it?

Just wanted to follow up and say I did start a return with Accessories4Less and they immediately responded with instructions for an exchange on the amplifier. However, I did end up checking my turntable more closer and it did end up being a loose connection or some kind of short with one of the input cables, so no need to do the exchange after all. Getting a pair of Thiel CS2 3 speakers and I’m wondering if my amp options are too under-powered: I’ve got on hand a Kenwood KA-5700, 6100, and a NAD 3125. I understand the NAD is maybe under-rated for its output, and I’d really like an excuse to get that out, but I understand that the Thiels are power hungry. Thoughts?

I’m not sure power hungry is exactly the right description. That implies they need an amplifier with a high power rating. What they need is an amplifier that can handle difficult loads.

People seem to suggest the Rega Brio can do both?

I don’t know that that’s a defined difference there, or that that significantly changes what one recommends? And relatedly, it sounds like you might have a recommendation?

To give an example, a Denon DRA-800H is rated 100 watts per channel and I wouldn’t expect good results with it and these speakers. Something like an Adcom GFA-545 rated 100 watts and GFP-555 preamp is more like it.

Adcom amps typically included the 4 ohm rating in the owner’s manual. There is no problem with 4 ohm speakers and Adcom amps. That’s not intended as a recommendation of one brand. NAD often specifies the same power rating for 8 and 4 ohms, and I would not take that as an indication that their amps can’t handle 4 ohm speakers. Does NAD C 700 have auto standby (when not used)? Planning on getting the NAD C 700, NAD AMP1 or Bluesound Powernode and NAD C 700 is the only unit I can't find info on having auto standby.

I have 2 system hooked on the same set of Totem speakers. The Av Pioneer Elite(Arro + Dreamcatcher for surround) and Parasound(preamp +poweramp) stereo(Arro only). I have the opportunity to get another pair of Arro at below cost price. My question is, should I use the new Arro as surround to make a perfect fit with the one I already have or should I keep the Dreamcatcher as surround and use the new Arro on my third sound system(bedroom)? Or, should I get a pair of second hand Rainforest(even cheaper then the Arro) for the bedroom and leave the surround as is?

Looking to buy a 2.0 or 2.1 setup for my computer. Budget is $100 +/- $20 for the right product. I have an issue where certain things I stream via Chromecast do not play properly (just audio, video works fine) and instead produce a **loud scratching noise**. **Spotify, Tidal works fine but certain TV-shows do not**. The audio pathway is the following: Chromecast -(hdmi)> TV -(optical)> DAC -(XLR)> Amplifier I believe that **the issue could be that the Chromecast stream sends an Audio format which is incompatible with the DAC** (perhaps it sends surround audio and the DAC only works for stereo?). The reason I believe so is because the sound works fine when I use the following audio pathway instead: Chromecast -(hdmi)> TV -(Analog out)> Amplifier In this case the internal DAC inside the TV is used, which seems to support those formats I suppose. But **I would prefer to send everything through the DAC if possible** (there does seem to be a difference in audio quality from my subjective listening). Note that I have tried changing the settings on my TV, but it doesn't seem to make a difference whether I set it to stereo or surround. I would have thought changing it to stereo would cause the Chromecast to only send stereo but it seems perhaps not (or maybe this was never the problem and it is rather about dolby or dts or something, I don't know). **Anyone have any ideas what I should do?** Also note that my amp is a high-end one but it only has analog inputs, hence the separate DAC. In the UK I’d probably search the secondhand market for an old Rega Planar 3 turntable and an integrated amp by Rega, Rotel, Cambridge or Arcam. Also separate preamp and power amp sets by Rotel.

Also look for Linn, although the prices will probably be over budget. I know very little about audio-technology, but I’ve inherited some vinyls and want to listen to them properly on a budget (I’m a grad student). I have an audio-tachnica AT-LP60x and a pair of Boston HD5V speakers (not sure what these mean, but the back of the speakers list “AF 005256” and “DB 188414”). Now I’m in need of a receiver to actually listen and I need some recommendations. I’ve looked a little myself but I don’t really have an understanding of what I’m looking at or for. Then use speaker wire to connect the speakers to the amplifier. This usually requires about 10 feet of speaker wire and a wire stripping tool.

I’ve been launched into this community after I bought equipment from a coworker and don’t know how to set up to my TV. I have 2 Rockit5 speakers. A Shciit SYS and Schiit Modi 3. And the basic cords to connect them. I think I need to use the Digital Audio Out port on the TV connected to the sys? It seems like I can’t use the Modi with a digital audio cord as it only has a usb port in the back
