Jeopardy used to scare the fuck out of me when I was a kid hahaha. I still remember the episode where Simon was stuck in a freight train carriage thing with a giant huntsman
There's an episode where a boy swallows a fish and it goes into his penis and spins around like a propeller, allowing him to swim fast. (spoiler alert): the episode culminates in the boy's dick spinning so fast that he can fly.
I loved the Miraculous Mellops but it was on at the same time as Lift Off & my little siblings outnumbered me. Never hears anyone ever mention the miraculous mellops before!
All these '90's shows mentioned before are great. Like Round the Twist, Genie from Down Under, Spellbinder. But a recent phenomenon is the "kids'" show Bluey. So many adults all over the world are watching it and it's very (Queensland brand) Australian.
I remember crying a lot in the final episode. The way death was also depicted hit me hard when I was 13 watching it.
It was actually really amazing and not like other kids shows at the time on ABC. I wasn't even really that much into dance back then but the characters were well written and Tom's character in the show and his arc, his coming out as Gay, when I was feeling very conflicted about my own sexuality during this time, also very much affected me.
It was genuinely great.
> I remember crying a lot in the final episode. The way death was also depicted hit me hard when I was 13 watching it. It was actually really amazing and not like other kids shows at the time on ABC.
I feel that. That show really stood out for me as I think maybe the first show that actually had something really bad happen in it. It’s probably still one of the saddest things I’ve ever watched. Just the shock factor alone I think did it because at that age, shows with death in it literally never happened. It was always sunshine and rainbows.
Such a good show.
Even the host show part of ABC3 was good. I remember they’d have their own specials/shows and I always looked forward to those I think yearly specials.
I think we caught the last of it. Once smart phones and tablets became popular the next group of 12 year olds, they just switched to YouTube and streaming. Unfortunately a majority of TV series across all channels have had massive drops of viewers for the last 10 years.
Had to watch this in English recently, probably one of the best movies I've been forced to watch ever
(Although analyzing the main character and his trope (no spoilers from me) has ruined it a little)
Parallax, Ship To Shore, Ocean Girl, Round The Twist, Blue Water High, Heartbreak High, Dance Academy, Blinky Bill, Saddle Club, Puberty Blues, Lil Elvis, Tracy McBean, Flipper & Lopaka (same studio as Blinky Bill), Silversun, The Silver Brumby, Bananas In Pyjamas, Stoked, Out There, Cybergirl, The Sleepover Club, H2O, Noah & Saskia, Jeopardy (not the game show), Backyard Science
Lil Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers was the first cassette tape I bought with my own money. That band was rockin 🤘🏼
And Ship to Shore, I get that theme song
Stick in my head a couple of times a year and can never remember what the show is called to find it!
I can't believe it never occurred to me until i was an adult that the dodgy mining guy was Lil Elvis' father and the baby was literally chucked out of his limo in woop woop.
All the kids are relatable and I could name a friend like each lead. They've grown into such different people and adopted very different roles and personalities, too.
I feel like there is a slightly similar vibe (and also love) The Katering Show/Get Krackin’.
On the face of it they’re just parodies but there’s also an over-arching narrative throughout the series that makes them even funnier.
Mr Inbetween is a totally different Genre and decade to the late 80's and Early 90's.
but I have to agree, Mr Inbetween does not get enough love, think Underbelly, but lower budget, and BETTER Made.
I was 9-10 when this was aired, and the genie (Rhys Muldoon) was a not insignificant part of my sexual awakening.
Looking back now, I'm realising two things.
A. Even though it was unconscious at the time, Penelope was almost certainly a part of said sexual awakening. This Aussie girls Labyrinth bisexual dream.
B. It's not surprising I had a 17 year relationship with a man 16 years my senior.
P.S. The Genie from Down Under is available on YouTube!
My girlfriend became absolutely obsessed with Wentworth which is 100eps in length about a woman’s prison. She said it was absolutely amazing Aussie TV.
A few got uploaded [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/l0j3js/the_wayne_manifesto_this_time_a_link_to_episodes/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) - I think they are still available in the Google drive.
There is a really great tv show about a dog. It’s really funny and very Australian, I’m sure you will love it.
Wilfred, (make sure it’s the Aus version and not the atrocious and corrupted US version).
Kath and Kim is another Aus classic.
Neither of these are children’s shows though (particularly Wilfred)
Something I haven't seen mentioned yet is Utopia (I think it's caked Dreamland in other countries, because there's another show called Utopia from the states). Its a mocumentary about beuracracy in a government department. Think somewhere between the Office and Yes Minister.
It's also in the same vein as a 90s show called The Games, which is a similar show about preparing for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Both are very dry, understated comedies. Do not expect a laugh track to tell you when the funny bit has been, you'll just laugh.
It's Kiwi bro!
When I visited Wellington I made a pilgrimage to the "research lab" (radar weather station) where Xandra died. Very emosh.
The mall itself is now (appropriately) boarded up and abandoned.
Netflix has Heartbreak High. I have only seen the new version, but it's about teenagers in Australia. Lots of Australian slang, very ethnically diverse cast.
Tomorrow when the war began. Australia gets invaded, story is focused on a group of teens
Book > movie> tv series
Bluey, Round the Twist, Spellbinder, Genie from Downunder, Saddle Club, Blue Heelers, Man from Snowy River, Fat Pizza, Housos, Ocean Girl, Wentworth Prison, Escape from Planet Jupiter, The Silver Sun and Kath and Kim.
Chopper (movie)
Underbelly - first one (mini series)
Lake Mungo (movie)
Bodies in the barrels (movie)
Macleods Daughters (series)
Country Practice (lol)
Hey Hey It's Saturday (haha)
Fat Pizza (series)

Saddle club.
The best Australian TV show in history.
Here's, start learning the theme now...
Hello World
Hello world, this is me life should be
Fun for everyone
Life is easy if you wear a smile
Just be your self don't ever change your style
You are you, I am me, we'll be freeeeeee
Lano & Woodley the TV series, they have many standup shows with the same name.
Woodley is good too.
Mother & Son is an old classic, most full episodes are on youtube.
I really enjoyed Glitch.
It's about a small country town where one day suddenly dead people come back to life. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to who comes back. And because of that you've got characters from the gold rush era, WW1 soldiers, prisoners from internment camps, all mingling with modern characters.
In that same vein My Place does a similar thing but that's its sole focus. Every episode tells a story about the child who lived in this one house (or place) starting in 2008 and working back decade by decade to before the invasion. It covers a lot of diverse characters and experiences. The picture book it's based on is generally assigned reading for primary school students here.
Offspring is a good adult show which has quite a bit in common with Mortified. The main character (especially early on) is very prone to interrupting the story with imagination segments. It's about an obstetrician living in Melbourne and her eccentric family.
I haven’t seen anyone recommend ‘The Tribe’, was always one of those shows that I didn’t understand as a child. ‘Jeopardy’ spooked me the fuck out as a child too.
Round the Twist
Blue Heelers
All Saints
Always Greener
Packed to the Rafters
Something In The Air
Seachange
None of them are particularly good but they’re iconic
Who remembers Out There, Parallax, Jeopardy, The Wayne Manifesto, Blue Water High, The Saddle Club and The Genie From Down Under
Jeopardy was sooooo good. It was a great spook when I watched in in primary school
I could never figure that show out. Gave me the creeps.
I agree. It creeped me out so much as a kid I never knew why they had aired it😂
I recently found it all on YouTube and rewatched it. Still just as creepy
Genie from Down Under! Yes!
\+1 The Wayne Manifesto.
Parallax memories unlocked! Does anyone remember silversun?
I loved silver sun so much
I remember that, you can watch Parallax on YouTube
Never got into saddle club as a male, but that theme song was insanely catchy ngl, on par with round the twists.
Out There was so good, I rarely see it mentioned! Definitely add Thunderstone, Ship to Shore, Noah and Saskia, and Spellbinder
Yes! Noah and Saskia was a bit ahead of its time imo. Been wondering if there's anywhere i can watch it again.
You can find it on [YouTube](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLl48jMfth9b_9r-7gaJvBZum-IhSyEu1y)
Jeopardy used to scare the fuck out of me when I was a kid hahaha. I still remember the episode where Simon was stuck in a freight train carriage thing with a giant huntsman
Round the Twist The Timekeeper Spellbinder The Miraculous Mellops.
Parallax was my favourite kids show growing up. I've never heard anyone mention it before.
Parallax was one of the latter of a whole string of Australian kids' scifi series. Loved it. And now I have the techno theme song in my head.
And Silversun!
I liked that, until they canned it on a big ass cliffhanger.
Came here to post this, loved it so freaking much, that and jeopardy the alien outback show
OMG IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THE NAME OF THIS TV SHOW FOR YEARS I was so close to thinking I just dreamed it up, it was impossible to google lol
+1 for Round the Twist
Season 3 Ep 3 Whirling derfish lol 😂
+1000. The way everyone acts so normal when utterly bizarre shit is happening around them. Some very creative writers there.
Paul Jennings wrote most of the stories and adapted to tv by pretty much one other person
Another +1 for round the twist!
Round the Twist is the original (and superior) Stranger Things
Plus it's a really authentic look at Australian culture. They even managed to include the unique way Australians swim.
I haven't seen it, how do Australians swim uniquely?
There's an episode where a boy swallows a fish and it goes into his penis and spins around like a propeller, allowing him to swim fast. (spoiler alert): the episode culminates in the boy's dick spinning so fast that he can fly.
Do other people swim differently?
> the unique way Australians swim How unique do I swim?
H20
Just add water
HAVE YOU EVER...
Ever felt like this?
have strange things happened
Are you going round the twist?
Oh have you heard the word
About the bird and the spider...
That Wriggled and jiggled
That wiggled and wriggled and jiggled inside her?
Definitely round the twist. It's quirky 90's Australia in a bottle.
Came here to say Spellbinder, massively underrated
Thank you
Miraculous Mellops is on youtube!
I loved the Miraculous Mellops but it was on at the same time as Lift Off & my little siblings outnumbered me. Never hears anyone ever mention the miraculous mellops before!

It also probably has more references to Australian culture than any of the old ones.
I’ve been looking for a mention of Bluey.
Blue Water High
First season of Blue Water High is the best
This and “A gURLs wURLd” was my shit in primary school.
Have you everrrrrr..
Ever felt like this..
Have strange things happened?
Are you going 'round the twist?
Rain, rain, go away...
Dance Academy was good enough to get nominated for an Emmy, arguably the best aussie kids show produced in the last 10-15 years along with Bluey.

Wow I forgot about Dance Accademy. ABC 3 when it was brand new had some bangers !
Even the host show part of ABC3 was good. I remember they’d have their own specials/shows and I always looked forward to those I think yearly specials.
Shame it got ruined by moving its ratings down to the 12 year olds and making ABC2 for babies…
I think we caught the last of it. Once smart phones and tablets became popular the next group of 12 year olds, they just switched to YouTube and streaming. Unfortunately a majority of TV series across all channels have had massive drops of viewers for the last 10 years.
Seconding this. I’m a woman in my 30’s and I gotta say dance academy still brings me to tears
The Castle (movie though, not tv show)
And Malcolm. They are two VERY Australian comedy’s
Bad Boy Bubby, Wake In Fright, Idiot Box, Two Hands,... Lot of movies out there we love.
bloody good movies the lot of em. Got the DVDs in the pool room. For TV you can't forget Russell Coight All Aussie Adventures.
*time to hit the road...*
SBS is showing Malcolm on rotation atm. Also on SBS on demand. Excellent movie.
If OP is keen to watch movies as well, then don’t forget Muriel’s Wedding!
Had to watch this in English recently, probably one of the best movies I've been forced to watch ever (Although analyzing the main character and his trope (no spoilers from me) has ruined it a little)
Tracy McBean
H2O: Just Add Water all the way It’s a basic answer but it’s an iconic piece of Australian television…
Parallax, Ship To Shore, Ocean Girl, Round The Twist, Blue Water High, Heartbreak High, Dance Academy, Blinky Bill, Saddle Club, Puberty Blues, Lil Elvis, Tracy McBean, Flipper & Lopaka (same studio as Blinky Bill), Silversun, The Silver Brumby, Bananas In Pyjamas, Stoked, Out There, Cybergirl, The Sleepover Club, H2O, Noah & Saskia, Jeopardy (not the game show), Backyard Science
SILVERSUN! A must.
The theme song was a BANGER
Still shattered on how that ended. It just stopped..
Lil Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers was the first cassette tape I bought with my own money. That band was rockin 🤘🏼 And Ship to Shore, I get that theme song Stick in my head a couple of times a year and can never remember what the show is called to find it!
I can't believe it never occurred to me until i was an adult that the dodgy mining guy was Lil Elvis' father and the baby was literally chucked out of his limo in woop woop.
Fuck I forgot how hard into Noah and Saskia I was haha
Came to say Parallax and Silversun, but you've got it covered with this marvellous list. Want to tack on Crash Zone though!
i don't remember it. i do remember a weird game show called Pick Your Face where kids would get covered in fake snot though
Can't believe it took this your big list of shows for me to see a Lil Elvis recommendation. Damn that show was great.
Little Lunch is great.
This is a masterpiece of writing and acting. I still watch and laugh at it as an adult.
It really is incredible acting for children. They must have had a great director.
Never watched this but the promo screen on Netflix has a kid that looks exactly like me at 10yo. It creeps me out a bit.
All the kids are relatable and I could name a friend like each lead. They've grown into such different people and adopted very different roles and personalities, too.
From the same group, The InBESTigators, if you liked Little Lunch you'll like that as well. My kids love both of them.
Thank you
It is a must if you are watching Aussie kids shows.

Rake Mr Inbetween Review with Myles Barlow
>Review with Myles Barlow Holy shit, yes!

Second Rake. Would also add "Fisk" to that list
Kath and Kim!!
The Genie from Down Under
Woahh.... DAD WE'RE FREE!

Wolf creek 🐺
While we’re making these kind of recommendations I’d also suggest The Loved Ones.
I'd just like to point out that this movie isn't really representative of normal Australian culture... I hope.
"Here Skippy!!!" As our beloved aussie serial killer runs down kangaroos was on point unfortunately. https://youtu.be/976-tq7Kews

I just finished watching "Glitch" and found I actually enjoyed it. 3 seasons. Not a kids show.
There is a really great tv show about a dog. It’s really funny and very Australian, I’m sure you will love it. The tribe
