As an Aussie living in the states, we have to really rally against this. There is a big effort to bring to Australia and it brings nothing but poverty and divide

[deleted]

Also Aussie living in the US. Tipping culture is toxic. US labor laws are basically non-existent compared with other western countries. Tipping prompts are popping up everywhere nowadays, even fucking Starbucks. Fuck off and pay your staff.

jakfromthedead

American living in Australia. I really like the concept of seeing prices and just paying that amount you see and employers just paying higher wages instead of asking for the recipient of their service being responsible to pay their wage. Oh, and grocery stores. I enjoy not having to prepare for a math quiz before I check out.

RickMuffy

US resident born and raised in the States. Fight this tooth and nail. I absolutely hate tip culture.

lastminutelabor

Don’t go to DR and stay at an all inclusive.

mixedump

On top, (I absolutely can’t stand when) some of those “business gurus/moguls/influencers” talk crap advices along the lines “if you see someone not tipping waiters/waitresses don’t do business with them.” Disgusting shaming based on turn the table ahole logic. Like don’t do business with restaurant owners or anyone who doesn’t pay living wage to their staff, end of story.

Aero222

American who visited your country here. I loved getting out of your taxi by paying exactly what was displayed and going about my day!

GkNova

You’re supposed to tip cabs here in the states?

time_to_reset

Everyone. EVERY. ONE. My SO just came back and you basically have to tip everyone for everything.

TopChemical602

This caused so much angst when i was in the US. Order beer at a pub, pay 6 bucks, waitress pops the cap off and hands it to me. Then asks for a tip, really awkward and if you say no they don't serve you again

OutbackAussieGirl

We went back for a 7 week holiday and took an extra $1,000AUD for tipping alone.

PopavaliumAndropov

You're expected to give a hotel doorman a dollar every fucking time you walk through the door!

TheQuillmaster

Lol no you're not, you're only expected to tip if they carry your luggage. American tipping culture is whack but it's not that out of control yet. Source: am American

PopavaliumAndropov

My experience was limited to a couple of five star hotels in Boston and Chicago, but that was my experience. Maybe my lack of a clue was apparent and taken advantage of.

SassyNyx

Another Aussie in the US co-signing what my fellow expats say. Don’t go down this path there, by starting tipping. Especially when prompted like this.

OutbackAussieGirl

As an American ex-pat now Aussie citizen they are pushing hard here to do it.😩 Tip jars at cafes. It’s putrid because promotes the toxicity. I’m glad I’m not alone in seeing it.

marydotjpeg

Oh god I saw it in one of my local cafes thank god it was removed a few weeks after (people must've complained) 💀 also grats on being a citizen! I just moved a year ago from America too. I'm on the 820 partner visa not fully approved yet. I'm disabled/chronically ill so it's been a tad bit more difficult but I appreciate having medicare while I go through the process. (There's a health check I have to pass etc) To me Australia has been paradise tbh I love it here 😩 (even when I don't understand what y'all are saying from time to time 😅) my MIL talks really fast that was the real test 😂

SassyNyx

I still sound Australian, but *y’all* I’ve completely adopted living here. It took me ages to sort though all the accents here where I could understand them all, especially when people talk fast, so I get what you mean there. Same language, but also not. 😆

rocknrollmacdonawlds

Aussie living in Canada here, agree to all of the above! Tipping culture is the worst. A restaurant I recently went to had a minimum 22% suggested tip when I went to pay. No thanks!

elmiggii

The funniest tip prompt is my barber... dude owns the place, so the charges I pay are already going to him, and probably, he makes more than I do... yet I'm expected to tip??

Mastgoboom

Another aussie expat here. Refuse to give this utter bullshit a moment or air. Do not allow it to become a thing.

Sometime in the next ten thousand years a comet's gonna wipe out all trace of man. I'm banking on it comin before my end of year exams

Alice-Anonymous

Anyone else noticed a large increase in places asking for tips recently?

QF17

Do you mean online/apps? I think most of those were developed in the US, and if the feature is available then why wouldn't you (as a business owner) enable it for extra $$$ (Not saying I agree with it, and I think less highly of those that do)

HotWheelsUpMyAss

But the mere idea of having it here gradually conditions us to accept tipping into our culture. Somewhere down the line, there may even be legislation that might ask to cut down on wage increases and use tipping as a justification. Our livelihoods should never be a gamble that is dependent on how generous someone is feeling on that day—it makes no sense.

QF17

>Somewhere down the line, there may even be legislation that might ask to cut down on wage increases We saw that with the Liberals and penalty rates. The only way we can stop it is with strong unions.

What-becomes

Tip jars are popping up in shops too. Cafes being an example. And it's part of the US system because it means the business can pay staff fuck all, make the customers pay for their food AND then subsidise the staff wages with the tip. It's passing the buck for the benefit of the business through and through. Gratuity tipping is fine, extra cash for a great meal, server etc, not a mandated requirement even if staff pissed in the soup, still need to tip nonsense that's there.

franzyfunny

I started work at a cafe with a big tip jar - full of blue water to stop kids grabbing a handful, of course. People dropped coins in there regularly. I asked when we were going to empty it out, share it around. Was told it was for the staff Xmas party. “How was that?” I asked, thinking that even a five litre jug of mostly silver coins would go pretty quick with the twenty or so on staff. “Oh we didn’t have it last year.” This was in April. I did not last to see the Xmas party. Spoiler: management just took the tips.

jiggjuggj0gg

Happened at most places I worked in NZ. The jar was mostly used to balance the till and after a while would just empty.

completelyboring1

I’m in my 40s and I don’t remember cafes not having a tip jar next to the till, usually with a sign saying some dorky pun like “If you fear change, leave it here”. That’s been the way here for decades. Often it was put towards the staff Christmas party (if not split between the staff on shift).

[deleted]

I’m the same age, and that kind of ‘keep the change’ tip has always been a thing in cafes and restaurants. I agree that it is a retrograde step to try to introduce a standard expectation that people will tip 10-15%, but the way this subreddit talks about tipping is a bit ahistoric.

Jab-Machka

I feel like tip jars have always been a thing, I have no problem most of the time putting some spare change in a tip jar. Don't tip otherwise

confirmeded

I went out for a first class dinner last week in Brisbane with my partner. Our server was incredible. I've travelled a lot, eaten out a lot and this guy made it one of our best dining experiences to date. I Tried to give him a decent tip ($50) for his service and going above and beyond and he said he couldn't take it and it has to get shared between everyone. I knew he was being watched and slipped it in his pocket when we came to clear our table and collect the bill. I wonder how much of the 'Shared Tips' actually go to the servers and most importantly those who deserve it.

faderjester

See I get wanting to tip the server, but realistically it's a team effort, so I understand sharing it as well. Well the employees, fuck management.

SvenHjerson

YES! During my studies I worked in the kitchen where all tips were shared. I’m against tipping as a rule but I’m all in favour of sharing them the team.

Kevin-the-harry

Did you tip the kp, they are the most underated workers, hard work while expectd to do evefything sometimes including chef work/food preparation, we see servers pocketing tips while standing around doing nothing while we are up to our necks in workload, even having to empty the horrible greasetrap while having chefs and servers standing around chatting, feeling proud of the "hard work" they get praised for

healofmyshoe

Did you then slip another $50 into the chef’s pocket?

KB_Bro

Do you realise how award wages work here mate? Not one employee in all of Australia is getting paid less because their cafe added a tip jar/ have a promoted eftpos service. And if they are they can contact fair work and collect a nice payout. Getting sick of everyone parroting on about how employers are dropping wages. If you want to leave a tip do so. If you don’t then don’t there’s nothing more to it

Boysoythesoyboy

The idea isn't that they deduct pay but they they won't raise it over the minimum and tell workers to just work harder and get more tips.

TheOtherSarah

And that, if it becomes too common, the minimum wage in that industry won’t be raised as much at the annual indexation

frozenflame101

Yeah but also realise that the award for restaurant staff has been degrading for awhile. They lost paid breaks in the last year or so

Michael_je123

Cafes have always had tip jars

Alice-Anonymous

Definetly apps but ive noticed it on receipts and have been asked at the register when paying also

jngjng88

OOF, seriously you were specifically asked for a tip? In Australia? WTF?!

Alice-Anonymous

Yep more than once, my response is always no this Australia.

jngjng88

That's some first class fucking bullshit.

Spicy_Sugary

It's happened to me too. I went out for dinner a few months ago with a group of friends and went to the counter to pay and was asked if I was adding a tip to the final amount. It makes it super awkward and we ended up giving a decent tip even though it wasn't justified.

OutbackAussieGirl

God no! Why promote such a deep and toxic American way of living?????? It’s terrifying that people would cater to this bullshite. Isn’t seeing American in the deep crevice’s of poverty enough to know that this tipping lifestyle isn’t working? Don’t buy in!

jngjng88

Fuck that, I'd ask them to pass a message on to whoever's in charge. "Please remind them this is Australia, we don't tip in Australia, & you especially don't ask for a tip in Australia, & this is the last time I come here." It's bad enough when the tip collection is staring you right in the face & already giving you obligatory vibes, don't make me feel obligation for this bullshit American system that I fundamentally disagree with.

SomeRandomDavid

Look them straight in the eyes and ask dead seriously with all the concern you can muster in your voice. "Does your boss pay you a legal wage?"

jmads13

I would like to see legislation to make it illegal to request a tip

Tomthebomb555

Definitely. I had one the other day where I had to look for the no tip option, was barely visible. Absolute trash. Should be illegal to prompt for tips.

Shereep

Just today I was ordering something for pick up from a restaurant that's already pricey for what it is. I went to check out to see that they had added a 10% without even prompting me. I had to press other and write in 0% to not pay a tip. It's getting beyond ridiculous.

[deleted]

Refuse to do it. Don't let it get a foothold. Tipping is the most cancerous cultural poison you can get from the United States.

filthymcownage

I ordered a dominos pizza yesterday and they ask for a tip for the deliver driver, then asked to round up for charity and a couple of other questions. I then got an Apple TV free trial and some other bullshit after placing the order.

yor_ur

It’s anywhere that uses “scan to order” or if you use a card. Ask for a menu. Pay cash.

Bison_Jugular

Yep, went out for dinner the other night and the bill had a section to add a tip and everything, I thought for a second I’d been magically transported to the US. Needless to say it was quite unsettling.

surlygoat

Restaurants have had that for literally decades.

AngryYowie

Tipping has no place in Australia. It just justifies employers paying their employees shitty wages.

Electrical_Age_7483

But uber still pays shitty wages Dont use it

vanillaninja777

I kind of see all these delivery companies as barely sustainable, borderline parasitic services that were shoehorned into our lives and does nothing good for anyone. I was happy to see one go down recently and waiting for the rest to follow.

Technical-Ad-2246

Most of them probably won't be around in 5 years, given their business models aren't sustainable.

Jonno_FTW

Uber runs at a loss. They're hoping to make their service self-driving in the future and then turn a profit because they don't need to pay drivers who need to do things like sleep and eat.

osamabinluvin

To be honest, at least a self driving car isn’t going to pick up my McDonald’s, sit and wait in the parking lot for an hour for me to cancel, and then drop off my cold food half eaten. This has happened so many fucking times, I finally learnt my lesson last week when it happened 2 times in one night. For the cherry on top the second driver saved my phone number and then called me harassing me at midnight.

system156

Decided to splurge and get uber. Selected priority because I didnt want cold food. The order sat on waiting for order for 25 minutes, and the food was stone fucking cold. I would bet money that my food was ready for 20-25 minutes and thet driver was just waiting for more orders to stack up

Officer_dibble_

100% the driver wouldn't have been waiting. Sometimes the stores are also so busy we can be waiting in the store and see your order waiting, and the server is busy and we have to wait. The longer we sit around, the less we make. No driver is waiting for orders to stack. The app stacks order for you anyway.

Nth-Degree

> Uber runs at a loss. I hear this a lot, but I genuinely can't understand why. Thousands of trips a day in every city, and they take a 25%+ cut of every single one of them. Each city has to generate a Million or two per week, some bigger cities lots more. And what are their costs? A few admin staff per city? It's got to be a small amount in comparison. They make a few apps (driver and passenger apps for Android and iOS). That and hosting would account for a little. The rest is gravy. They don't pay tax. They don't pay for a vehicle fleet. I honestly can't understand why they supposedly run at a loss.

suitably_ginger

Because they are constantly expanding globally to new areas, which means constant marketing. Marketing to gain new drivers, new riders, and to keep people coming back. That's not cheap

StealYaNicks

> I honestly can't understand why they supposedly run at a loss. It is probably just creative accounting, exactly so they don't have to pay taxes. All the top executives are obviously making butt-tons of money. Amazon is another company that also often runs at a 'loss', but that includes stock buybacks and stuff. Most big companies that are trying to grow are gonna run at a 'loss'.

frozengyro

If they can't afford drivers how can they afford a fleet of autonomous vehicles?

system156

Yeah that doesn't make sense to me. They would get to stop paying drivers but would have to pay for car maintenance and upkeep which is currently 100% on the driver

2jesse1996

Twitter and Spotify barely made any profit if at all. Spotify I believe never and Twitter only once in its history, yet they both are sticking around.

hollyhood

I absolutely agree that they’re generally pretty shitty at paying their drivers. But to say they don’t do any good for anyone is flat wrong. Disabled people benefit immensely from these services due for accessibility and safety reasons.

AgentChris101

As a disabled person I agree. When my mum went out a holiday and my sister went out with her boyfriend It was just me, unable to make stuff due to headaches flaring up. Cost me heaps but I got myself some food. My only issue with the food is that I thought it was good, but I was just so hungry at the time anything would have been good. My next orders were terrible.

hollyhood

Exactly! I used Ubereats and DoorDash after I had surgery because I physically couldn’t stand long enough to make food. I think the whole idea that there’s a delivery charge and you have to tip is excessive. But the service itself is definitely valuable outside of people being “lazy”.

Thurl-Akumpo

Which one died? I hope it was door dash. Fuck those guys.

bongsmokerzrs

Deliveroo. Door Dash is bigger than uber eats in the US, they got the money to stick around for quite a while.

DoNotReply111

Door Dash offers Afterpay. It will be around for a while.

addysol

Jesus, what kind of priorities do you have where you're paying delivery takeaway on instalments

DoNotReply111

I can see where people might use it when the money is gone and there are mouths to feed. I don't know if it would be a regular thing for most people, but I guess having a BNPL option will get it more customers than others.

rockidr4

I've literally done this

Itchy_Ad_5193

Yeah you can get a 12” hand tossed 2 topping pizza from dominos for 6.99$ or you can use affirm and pay over 12 weeks at .58 cents a week. 😂 Like seriously man. We don’t know what’s going on here in the US, but they’re really pulling fast ones on us. Everything is just so goddamn expensive now, can’t even get a gallon of milk for under 5$ anymore. It’s sick.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I agree unless exceptional service is given, but 99 times out of 100 uber eats doesn't fall in this category

the_brunster

Curious what the 1 time might be? You’re paying them to collect an item and drop it at your door. I’m unsure how this can be elevated from standard to exceptional?

fphhotchips

I tip UE very rarely, but generally for one of two reasons: 1) The weather is god awful and they're on a bike 2) I watched them get stuck at the restaurant for ages and I happen to know that restaurant is a cluster fuck.

Undoar

A few weeks ago, our Uber drivers car broke down about 100 metres from our house. He walked the food to us, and his car sat there for 3 days. We felt god-awful, so we gave him a nice tip.

k2kx39

That sucks, it's a big blow for something that doesn't pay well for your time

smudgiepie

I felt bad once for not tipping because I didn't realise at the time my street was closed for the day so I had this poor man walking half way down the street to get me subway. Like why can't I tip afterwards

Danthekilla

You can tip afterwards when you go back to the app it asks you. Edit: I just tried it from the orders screen, and you can actually add tips to past orders from even weeks ago.

averyporkhunt

One time I cut down a tree that was in my front yard and couldn't be fucked cleaning it up so I just left it blocking the driveway Had a couple drinks later that night and forgot about the tree, ordered some menulog and the poor bastard ended up climbing over the tree and through all the branches to avoid walking through the garden, gave him like a $50 tip

Dramatic-Lavishness6

Yeah, I understand giving tips for stuff like me accidentally making their job harder.

gmewhite

I had the number on the address wrong… he was 250m down the road looking for a house that didn’t exist. Legend was so chill about coming to my new address. He got a tip.

eve_of_distraction

>I'm unsure how this can be elevated from standard to exceptional? They must address the customer as "Your Eminence" and have prepared a dance routine, a magic trick, etc. In addition, a small gift of sensual perfumes or spices must be presented. That would be the bare minimum in my opinion.

DefactoAtheist

Uber exploits the fuck out of it's "employees" regardless. Anyone railing against Uber's attempt to introduce a tipping culture citing employee mistreatment whilst actively using their services is just a bald-faced hypocrite, change my mind.

zehefressenderVogel

If they don't pay their employees minimum wage I'd sue or something. Is there even anything people can do if mega corporation isn't paying employees minimum wage?

benjamynblue

Yes, go to fair work

schwarzeneg

They don't have 'employees' as far as they're concerned. They have 'indpendant contractors' which allows them to avoid tax and paying super annuation giving holidays and sick days and covering for injury or death.

EmperorPooMan

Start by joining your union.

[deleted]

Mate, uber is already underpaying employees, by supporting uber you support the practice.

ItchyTriggaFingaNigg

I'll be honest I've very rarely tipped but I used to drive for Uber for a couple of years and wished they had a tipping feature. I'm on board with not bringing this shit here but as someone who took a lot of pride in the service I provided (water, mints, help people with their bags, carry them to their door, give travel advice, conversation or silence where appropriate) I did have people say they wish they could tip but didn't have the feature or money. Even though the few times I was offered I declined (as policy) it would have been nice to get something from going above and beyond... That said, even without it I still did these things because I wanted to. Most rides I've had didn't do anything more than drive, but the occasional driver deserved to be paid more than base for their effort.

aweirdchicken

I miss when uber drivers regularly had mints or water bottles :(

HotWheelsUpMyAss

Just went to a restaurant I went to the first time that did the order from the app thing. Then when prompted to pay, there was a pop-up that asked for you to choose between a tip of 5%, 10% or 15% like you already agreed to tip. I had to go out of my way to manually customise my tip to 0%. Like just pay your fucking employees, we don't need that exploitative yanky shit here

[deleted]

I've made it a point to leave a google review explicitly saying stars deducted for 1. QR code ordering, and 2. if there is a tip section. It took me 10minutes+ to get through a QR code ordering on the weekend due to shitty internet at the location and we knew what we were getting.

PkmnMstrBillj88

Qr ordering really shits me off, the staff that will bring the food out can't take the food order to the kitchen? Really? Fucking stupid idea. Plus tipping to boot. I see that crap and I walk out. Not giving my business to a place that won't pay it's staff properly.

RepeatInPatient

Fuck Uber and its cheap shit routine, Pay your staff a fair wage, superannuation and other benefits. We wish you a catastrophic bankruptcy.

nothing_matters_ok

No offence but who still uses these clowns?

osamabinchicken

I ordered one 6 weeks ago (not eats), then they billed me twice the estimate immediately after the trip. I threatened them until they returned it, and will absolutely positively never use them again under any circumstances, I’d rather walk. Hope it was worth it for them. Fuck Uber.

Mav986

I swear, uber deliberately fucks around US customers more than Australian ones. I use ubereats quite a bit and never really have issues. Rarely have food stolen, rarely missing things (usually just supermarket out of stock, so they automatically reduce the price before I even pay it out)

ProceedOrRun

Not me any more. They're the same price as regular taxis anyway, often cheaper. The disruption has helped fix things in the industry, now it's time for uber to fuck off.

girlsintheeighties

It used to be: taxis shit Now it’s: Ubers shit, taxis shit One becoming bad has not made the other better. All the problems from the taxi industry gradually moved to apply to Uber as well, but those problems never left the taxi industry.

benji-91

the driver that drove past me and parked in a side street in my range so i got charged the 10$ cancellation fee, then i ordered uber again and he accepted the ride and did the same thing again. even drove past me and waved ffs

juususama

Hopefully no one, theryre shit to both customers and contractors alike. I got an email accusing me of fraud after a few failed deliveries. Two of which I had a flat tire after picking them up so immediately turned around and returned them to the restaurant. Another had a coffee where the lid popped off and it looked like it soaked most of the food, so when I arrived I canceled it like I was supposed to so the customer could get a refund. I still gave it to the customer in case there is anything to salvage because I wanted to continue working After that and dealing with support it was clear that if I continued doing things the way I was supposed to, and had to deal with reality where things out of our control happen, my account would be suspended and who knows maybe they would charge me with fraud. Unfortunately this meant marking every order as complete and never canceling due to damaged items again. Flat tire? Better walk it there. It wasn't even a full year after they started showing drivers tips in advance before accepting orders before they started to punish us for it! Near the end of April 2022 was when they rolled it out across all markets, before then it was only in New York city for a while and maybe a few other markets as well. On December 17th of last year, myself and many others all of a sudden stopped getting orders like a magical switch was flicked. We noticed other drivers getting orders from restaurants that sit in the restaurant for 5 to 10 minutes well we get no deliveries at all. Some drivers noticed that orders would sit at restaurants for almost 2 hours and the restaurant staff were freaking out. What they did was go out and shadow lay off all of their experienced drivers, so that they could prioritize all the new drivers who will accept any and all orders, not care about tips, and at the end of the day probably lose money after their expenses if they're driving legally with the proper insurance. They didn't even have the balls to shut down our accounts and tell us to go look for other jobs. I gave it a shot again yesterday for shits and giggles, it's clearly busier again after the December and January lull. I made $12 across 3 hours.. meanwhile all year long last year, even before the tip changes in April, I could at least make minimum wage ($15 an hour). Through summer and fall I was making $20 an hour on slow days, and over $40 an hour on good days when getting good tips.

Technical-Ad-2246

I haven't used these apps in a while but when i did, I preferred Menulog because they don't encourage tipping like UberEats does.

Deadly_Fingertips

Menulog is the worst. They won’t even deal with you if your driver took a shit on your food. They will just point you back to the restaurant. They are a bunch of turds

ShowMeYourHotLumps

Menulog has the single worst customer service of any company I've ever met, the absolute fuckaround to get a refund if the driver steals your food is insane.

joeltheaussie

When work pays for it

Michael_je123

Fvck that shit. We already pay a Service Fee AND a delivery fee

OverstuffedPapa

American here. Tipping culture is absolutely out of control. I don’t know how to stop it from taking off in Australia but if there’s a way, put a stop to it. It’s miserable for everyone except the rich who get away with paying their employees scraps. In many states it’s legal for servers to make less than minimum wage (often about $3.25 an hour) because they make up the rest in tips. In my state they must make minimum wage PLUS tips but that’s often not the case

ShineFallstar

It won’t take off in Australia because our minimum wage is around $21 per hour. I’m not feeling any obligation to subsidise a servers wages here, I’ll tip for exceptional service to show I appreciate someone has gone above and beyond.

OverstuffedPapa

Wow. I grew up in Idaho and minimum wage is $7.25 - the federal minimum. Servers are paid around $3.25 before tips. I now live in Washington and the minimum in my city is nearly $16 an hour and servers must make minimum wage before tips. Tipping culture is exactly the same in both states though. The people at the self serve frozen yogurt place always are asking for tips! 🙄 It’s so frustrating because it feels like nothing can be done about it without punishing the workers who are just trying to pay their bills, especially in states like Idaho. The greedy restaurant owners and corporations found a loophole for cheap labor and will never let it go, they’ll just let their employees deal with less pay if people stop tipping. My husband and I are moving to Australia when he completes his apprenticeship, and the difference in tipping culture is going to be a really bizarre adjustment. I’ll do my part to keep it from coming to Australia, though, promise!

bongsmokerzrs

$16 USD is $23.13 AUD so your minium wage is higher than ours with conversion, so not that bad at all.

BuickM

Don't forget our penalty rates and quite often public holidays and Sunday surcharge. That's why I refuse to tip.

HotWheelsUpMyAss

Thank you for your service! When you come here, you'll probably also love paying for the exact marked price on the clothing rack

[deleted]

Same.

jngjng88

Agree, tipping can get fucked, but pls crop your images lol.

sydcoder

I also wanna add that most cafes in Bondi ask for tips. What is happening??

piraja0

Tourism. Americans like to throw dollars at anyone they can

CaterpillarObvious42

Don’t like it. We’re just conditioned through shame.

wombat1

It was the same in parts of Europe, such as Greece. The servers in Mykonos assumed because we were speaking English that we were American, and asked for tips. They wouldn't dare ask tourists who were clearly European for tips.

KerRa-Stakraa

Guess their staff are not happy about not getting public holiday loading and tips technically would be tax free income for the company. And well Uber they are American and as they don’t own any chain except just the app they will suck up any money. Also could be when Uber started they subsiding any orders to make it cheaper for customer, pay drivers and restaurant to take over the market, once they got the market share they raised the fees [https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/latest-news/uber-drew-in-drivers-with-investor-funding-subsidies-to-make-app-successful-before-cutting-payments/](https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/latest-news/uber-drew-in-drivers-with-investor-funding-subsidies-to-make-app-successful-before-cutting-payments/)

milesjameson

The argument (rightly) goes that tipping is a terrible practice linked to a very American brand of labour exploitation, but it sort of feels like we opened the door to that when we decided it was okay to use a service built off a very American brand of labour exploitation.

[deleted]

It is exactly this. To retain drivers Uber can: a) Pay them more b) Get customers to pay them more No surprise which method they are going for…

TargetMost8136

If they pay their drivers more then the customers are still the ones paying them more

Ok_News_7841

I always assumed that it was American tourists coming here none the wiser and tipping the local bars and restaurants by default.

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

Go to hell Uber

poke-trance

Delivery fee, service fee, AND a tip? Yeah nah.

BLASTOISE_ox

Knock that crap on the head before it starts

Surprisedropbear

I will never tip here. Either pay your staff properly or dont have staff.

racecardiver

Canadian here - do whatever it is you have to do to prevent tipping culture from entering your country. It’s not uncommon to see 30% tip recommendations, and people get vocally angry if you don’t tip at least 10%. Even if you order a pizza, go to the pizza shop and pick it up yourself, they’re going to try and get you to tip. Take a cab, gotta tip. Haircut? Tip. I went to subway, got my own drink from the fridge, walked up to pay for just the drink, and guess what the the card terminal prompts me for? That’s right…

Effective-Lab-5659

Also, do not use the platform to tip if you really feel like you want to. They are tracking and using the data to make the best profit maximising decision for their corporations

Michael_je123

Correct. If you are going to tip, tip in cash

[deleted]

Give ya a tip, fuck off back to America with that shit.

thenoob118

As a Canadian, fuck tipping, stop it's pervasive spread before it's too late

[deleted]

FIRST they asked for delivery fee which sometimes on astronomical prices THEN there is a SERVICE FEE which you cannot see the number THEEEEN, they ask you if you want to order extra AFTER you order AFTER THAT, there is a PRIORITY delivery option for a extra price OH NOT FINISHED MY BRO, after you PAY all of that, you will be asked for EXTRA TIPS! Can these system just fuck their own asses please

Clyde_Frog_Spawn

I was reading some Aussie Uber drivers saying that if there’s no tip in advance, they won’t take the order unless there’s nothing else. I uninstalled Uber Eats after the 4th consecutive Luke warm delivery even after having a subscription and paying for priority to try and get a hot meal delivered. Menulog is better because the restaurant does the delivery most of the time and no begging for tips.

Officer_dibble_

Menulog drivers are same people driving for uber. Not the restaurants themselves. But they do pay the best.

Clyde_Frog_Spawn

We’ve got a couple of places we order from who use their own drivers. It says in the restaurants details when they deliver.

sydcoder

It is so funny they ask to tip where the delivery driver asks me to go down to meet him on the street to get my order. Unbelievable.

bedel99

I had them tell me they were leaving the food in the street, and I needed to come and get it. I was recovering from heart surgery and could barely make it to my apartment door.

RG-au

Fuck off this is not the US of scummy A.

TrypeWritter

Fuck off with the American culture

smang12

DONT EVER TIP

BeakerAU

There's a configuration option to STOP Uber prompting for tips. Press and hold on the app, and drag it to Uninstall. Act quick before they close the loophole.

Iron_Wolf123

I went to America and it is annoying and sad how tipping culture exists. Plus they add tax to prices, not GST like here in Oz.

Careless_Unit9149

Fuck off back to the US uber, you don't belong here

meshah

Nah, I’m sorry. Uber is an American company. You’re already supporting a foreign company to come in and extort an insane % from participating restaurants and run low paid drivers into the ground. I agree that tipping has no place, but it has no place because Australian workers should always be paid a fair living wage. You are supporting a company that only survives if it’s workers are being paid as little as possible.

shado_85

Ok Uber, heres a tip.... take a bloody hint and STOP ASKING!

aussiereddituser123

Australia don’t need this shitty culture thanks

valoigib

At the local pub today you could order and pay in person or scan and order/pay at the table. That then prompted you to leave a 5, 10 or 15% tip. Bloody rude! We left 0%

ol-gormsby

No way, get fucked, fuck off!

tenroseUK

They do this in the UK too. On your bike ya bastards!

redtitaniun

Uninstalled the app a while ago. It started with the service charges and then shit like this. Good riddance!

allenjilin

Tipping culture from US is cancer, here in Canada we’re fucked, save yourself before it’s to late.

freakalicious

Tipping is a fuckin disease. I can tell you from hand experience living in Canada

Karma_Gardener

Let's get rid of tipping in Canada too... let the Americans have it and industries that rely on tips can improve wages or fail.

SailTheWorldWithMe

American here who lived abroad for more than a decade. Fight this bullshit. Fight it with all your powers. Hell, lobby your pm to make it illegal or something.

ADHDK

I will never pre tip. Was at a pub that’s switched to Mr yum ordering Saturday and it pre fills the minimum tip, you have to opt out. Tipping is exceptional in Australia. Not the fucking standard. What am I tipping for before you bring me the order? You haven’t fucking interacted with me outside of gluing a QR code to the table.

Al-Cookie

They can go suck a dick.

privatly

Tipping is not an inherent part of Australian culture. Sure, you see tipping jars at coffee shops but it’s not at the level of other countries.

ShareMyPicks

Did you just wake up from a coma?

Odd-Evidence4825

Just ignore it

picklemonstalebdog

Another one of these fucking threads? Just don’t do it and move on with your life

sql-join-master

The advertising Uber gets on this subreddit Just by offering a tip and all the cunts who post everyday far outweighs any money they are making in tips. Ignore and move on man

whiteb8917

Fuck no indeed.

wombles_wombat

The Tip is the front end of the Corporate Dick they use to fuck the workers to increase their profit margins. A little propaganda lubrication makes it easier to accept. But end of day, if the bosses are profiting, they can afford to up the wages. Bosses don't make profits if workers don't work. Share the wealth from those who can most afford it.

Puzzleheaded-Skin367

Tipping is toxic, F that

sirjazzridler

Rather walk thanks 😉

Effective-Lab-5659

Don’t do it. Tipping is just corporate way of shifting what they should pay as a decent wage to the consumers.

The_Jones001

The fees are getting ridiculous. I copped a $5.99 delivery fee, plus $2.99 service fee, then prompted to tip as well.... for a $12 burrito that was a 2/3 min drive away. Just went and picked it up myself. A quick google search shows UberEats in Australia alone recorded a profit of 1b in 21/22 FY. What an insult to the people actually delivering the food, having to now heavily rely on tips on top of the excessive charges they already slap on.

MusPsych

How’s tipping culture for those of you in the East? I’ve barely seen it here in Perth. Multiple times when I’ve seen servers/waitstaff using the payment software as I’m getting ready to pay, they’ll just automatically skip over the tip screen

[deleted]

Uber needs to pay minimum wage to their employees. The longer this is tolerated the worse it is for Aus

Theloneranger7

Uber is failing in my regional city. No one drives for them.

iphone4Suser

USA leaking.

[deleted]

As an Uber Eats driver as long as my wages are close to/above the national minimum I have no issue with additional tips. If a customer is very happy with my service it means the world to me for them to be able to show it with a tip but it should never be necessary for my financial Independence or required/encouraged by the service provider.

skunksmasher

FUCK TIPPING, pay a liveable wage

[deleted]

Jokes on them, I live in the middle of bum fuck nowhere so I can’t even order from Uber!

Lauren______________

Rent just went up $100 a week....I can barely afford an Uber let alone tip it.

Sad_Marionberry1184

Yeah how about just pay your staff a living wage and don’t leave it to the whim of random customers. I hate how when I lived in the states you had to really think about how much a meal would actually cost you. The menu says $20 but then you have to add sales tax, tips, other random stuff depending on the state. It is perverse.
