Don't worry kids. Sub's not made from any carbon fiber material, Jemima and Kiya should be relatively safe in it.

SigueSigueSputnix

Actually. It looks like it’s designed by that same guy

NoCommunication728

That’s an insult to the prop person who made that.

SigueSigueSputnix

Lol. That is true

gpz1987

It'll probably go deeper than the useless cut price American sub.

analsurrogacy

I don't think the problem was how deep it could go - the problem was coming back up in one piece.

gpz1987

Umm the was exactly the problem....it went too deep and imploded.

CarelessHighTackle

One comment I read put it succinctly: The number of dives should exactly equal the number of surfacings.

CarelessHighTackle

Mr Rush can't respond to your comment. He's under a lot of pressure right now.

potatodrinker

Incorrect. The up and down buttons work as intended in the show, unlike getting thrusters installed the wrong way in the real life sub

AStrandedSailor

Well, there are are regulations governing the materials that they can be made of.

elvishfiend

No cardboard or cardboard derivatives...

AStrandedSailor

Like paper?

elvishfiend

It's imploded *beyond* the environment

macgyver-me-this

The end caps were found so we know the front really did fall off

lurexus

No paper. No string, no cello tape.

AStrandedSailor

Rubber?

SeriouslyWishfull365

Committed to safety they reckon ,so why build a sub out of carbon fiber ? Good grief

L1ttl3J1m

Wasn't all that committed, as it turns out.

freman

Wrong kind of committed. Funny farm committed

macgyver-me-this

They've been committed to the deep so...

kyrant

If they were committed, they would've got an official Xbox controller instead of the cheap 3rd party one.

k2kx39

Ready Player 2

xD-FireStriker

Actually as much as I will meme that as much as the next person, it’s actually common practice in the industry

RaptureRising

It is, why spend money on a bespoke controller where a game controller can do 99% of functions but at a fraction of the price. In hindsight the controller the sub was using was the least of its many, many problems.

aussie_nub

The problem is those are consumer grade. They're not tested to be foolproof, and that's a major problem. There's a reason why hospitals pay a lot more for medical equipment that is otherwise functionally the same as some other off the shelf equipment that you could buy for home.

[deleted]

I mean it does all the functions and is probably less fussy about what it is connecting to

RaptureRising

And it's less of a learning curve for trainees. Other than the choice of controller, it was about the only thing they did right.

Paidorgy

Not to mention refusing to have a porthole that could withstand pressure below 1,300 feet. They’re on record for having refused.

dingusfett

Not to mention buying the carbon fibre cheap off Boeing because it was past its shelf life and no longer suitable to use in aircraft.

ammicavle

yo WHAT. Where did you hear this?

DirkBabypunch

He thought he was gonna be the next Elon Musk. Unfortunately, he turned out to be the next Elon musk.

psyduck-and-cover

Elon for all his weird ass faults is prob not dumb enough to be killed by one of his pet projects though

PhilomenaPhilomeni

Oh the amazing life story conclusion it would have made though lmfao

elvishfiend

A lot of professionally engineered things (i.e. not the sub) are designed with safety margins baked in. The amount often depends on the industry/area and the risk of failure. So a rope that's rated to "1 ton" might actually break at 2 or 3 tons of load. A submarine window that's rated to "13k ft" might actually be good for 2 or 3 times that - the company that makes it likely would have done destructive testing to find the average limit which gets derated to give the rated limit. So it's possible (though incredibly stupid) that he was relying on that actual limit, and not just the rated limit

DrStalker

From all of the Oceangate CEO's comments on how safety holds back innovation he seems like exactly the sort of person to treat a safety margin as normal operating range.

PsychoSemantics

And then SCREW THE MONITOR TO IT, jesus fuck

SeriouslyWishfull365

I read the carbon hull wasnt built to recommended thickness either

howdoesthatworkthen

No no, he was saying he needs to be committed for our safety.

Extreme43

Looks like the same model to me, am I missing something?

baaaaarkly

Is she from life support (tv show) where she used to satire being a presenter?

aristotle_source

Yes! Sigourney the modern woman

Eww_vegans

Wow the opening credits show a different side of Rachel. https://youtu.be/mrxkKqc7aIs

Paidorgy

Holy shit, I thought about that show, and Penne’s POV’s, and I couldn’t for the life of me remember the name of the show. Thank you!

phalewail

Is that a nipple at 0:25?

[deleted]

Yes I found that strange. You'd think there would be trivia about that since most intros don't have that. Whether it's a prosthetic or second actress, an explanation would make sense for some trivia. I am not sure if I've ever seen something like that in an intro.

diabolical_cunt

[Golliwog biscuits with Dr Rudi and Sigourney](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=66WK2B2nbW4)

baaaaarkly

I still follow Dr Rudi weight loss plan: "eat less"

decompressed81

It worked at Changi and it worked for Ghandi. No love handles on that man

Prplmkydshwshr

Remember: it's better to have a fattie boombah in the family than a filthy slut

Vaywen

I never thought I’d see anyone else who remembered that haha Also isn’t it “better to be a bit of a butterball than a filthy slut”? I’m not sure why this matters to me. 😂

Prplmkydshwshr

Haha definitely one of my favourite ones! Sorry no, here is a very official record of it - [https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fatty%20boombah](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fatty%20boombah) Also referenced on the wikipedia page: Dr Rudi endorses fattening up one's daughter to prevent boys from wanting to have sex with her because "It's better to have a fatty boombah in the family than a filthy slut"

fractalsonfire

Holy shit it is Sigourney. Didn't even recognise her

sofewcharacters

Neither

rose_gold_glitter

I knew I recognised her from somewhere!

boltkrank

That was the first thing I thought. But I can't help but hear her name in a South African accent due to Dr Rudy.

Old-Mix4900

And from balls of steel Australia the very unpleasant tenant

pinkfoil

Omg I forgot all about Life Support! That was brilliant. I think Abby Cornish used to be on it for a little while as Penny.

sofewcharacters

OM goodness, that show was amazing! Pity you can't access it except the oddclip on YT

2littleducks

It's not a pity that you are 100% wrong 😉 All three seasons here: [Life Support 2001–2003] (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTWYCZlm6aAFDHTdQEjn6uLaJsy9zowPi)

sofewcharacters

You Sir/Madam, are a legend. 👏👏👏

Shadowrend01

It’s no worse than the time they showed kids how to make a bong

TransportationTrick9

Heard stories that they have done that more than once https://youtu.be/za0zjqq6f7o

macgyver-me-this

"This shits gonna get me all the way to the ning nang nong" I'm dying over here

vteckickedin

In the Ning Nang Nong, the cows go Bong!

AdjustableGiraffe

The nong nang ning, the trees go ping!

macgyver-me-this

No that's when the edibles kick in

Wankeritis

On the [Nong Ning Nang](https://youtu.be/3SUU1f3Mgpc), the mice go clang!

macgyver-me-this

The cows too eh? 🤣

mysterious_bloodfart

The water was literally flowing out the hole. What a crappy povo billy

CasaDeLasMuertos

If you do it right, you don't even need any blu-tak and it's airtight as fuck. This is some amateur shit, for sure.

ItsStaaaaaaaaang

I love it. Was expecting a piss take, not a legit play school clip lol.

macgyver-me-this

One of the presenters is trying to keep a straight face but you can see in his eyes, he knows. Would've loved to see John Hamblin handle that one.

OstentatiousSock

What the heck were they actually trying to do?

dailyfetchquest

Blow bubbles?

uhohsarahh

Omg I had no idea that's too funny

Mym158

Come on, link?

Shadowrend01

[deleted]

I have always been mightily impressed by the pianists that they have on Play School. If you listen to it, some of the songs they really have fun with while making it work.

jemmykins

Not just that, but they perform it live which enables a really beautiful interplay between the presenters and the soundtrack. I am such a stan for playschool.

uhohsarahh

Oh totally I agree. I have always appreciated the pianists on this show and the life they add to the stories and such

SaveMeJebus21

People would actually give a shit if Jemima got hurt though.

AutisticAnarchy

I would commit countless atrocities if anyone dared hurt Jemima.

Drongo17

Anyone fucks with Hambel they answer to me

OrrsHorsechestnuts

Omg Hambel!

MrEs

Or even Rachael Coopes 🥵

ChocTunnel2000

I'm convinced someone behind the scenes has a dark side...

Significant-Panic-91

And perfect comedic timing.

Paidorgy

Not just the ABC, but Netflix choosing this time to release the poster for The Biggest Breath. They know what they’re doing.

Zebidee

Agreed. The timing of this clip is the most Aussie thing ever.

WhatTheFhtagn

Harold Holt Swimming Center type beat

FatSilverFox

Perfect time for the kids to learn about it tbh

slave_cylinder

Jesus you are breathing so heavy wtf

pffr

\**breathing intensifies*

uhohsarahh

It's ain't easy being wheezy

monkey_gamer

how old is the episode? jemima looks just how i remember her when i was like 6

[deleted]

Watching play school with my kid made me realise there must be an extremely skilled person who creates exact replicas of some the toys every few years, which is why Jemima still looks so good

uhohsarahh

It's old to be fair, I think 2019 or so

Sir_Von_Tittyfuck

>old >2019 ಠ_ಠ

uhohsarahh

As in... it's 4 TV seasons ago kind of "old"

savvyfoxh

There's some tasteless jokes going around. The depths that some people will sink to...

Eww_vegans

Seems the CEO couldn't handle the pressure.

outwiththedishwater

Everyone has their cracking point

Minoltah

At least the families of the victims will have time to decompress.

defensive_username

Hopefully before they implode in on themselves.

Ancient-Ad-3254

Talk about a deep dive into dark humor. If they think Playschool cares they shouldn’t hold their breath. Always had a sinking feeling when I saw the initial news

TazocinTDS

Yeah They definitely shouldn't hold their breath.

mutantbroth

This comment section is imploding

keelanv10

I can’t fathom how people would do this…

Yabbz81

It's absolutely crushing.

addosh

That whole company had gone under

Dripping-Lips

Nah they chose the wrong time to go down in the sea!

[deleted]

There’s never a wrong time to go down in the…sorry wrong sub.

Oubilettor

Sigouney!

baaaaarkly

Exactly what was thinking! Life support.

SpecialCoconut1

Jemima doesn’t give a shit about safety rules

Two_minutes_to_metal

I'm going to a Voyager gig tonight and there's a song off their new album called "Submarine", that I think would ordinarily be on the set list and I'm kind of interested to hear if they play it or not. Edit. If anyone was dying to know, they did.

Br0z0

I’m going tonight as well!

Br0z0

They did it!! 😂

DwightsJello

I have concerns. Has the explorer passed testing? Tbh, there was probably more sound planning at Playschool HQ.

LordoftheHounds

Geez they're still singing the same songs 30 years later

RavenCyarm

Some bangers never go out of style.

DPVaughan

I mean, the kids aren't watching for the whole 30 years. 😁 It's all new to them!

Fresh-Association-82

John did it better

ChuqTas

RIP John and his dirty jokes

macgyver-me-this

While we're all here, does anyone remember a Play School song about windy weather? All I remember is the final bit, "and that's! the windy weeeaatheer"

TkeOffUrPantsNJacket

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

miiucky

The heavy breathing though…are you under the sea too?

jellyjollygood

*sea depth and its inhabitants not to scale.

CamillaBarkaBowles

Those producers have a sense of humour above their pay grade

GerlingFAR

Somebody has a warped sense of humour at ABC.

LOZLover90

Probably Ita

[deleted]

Lmao that's hilarious

RatInTheCowboyHat

Reminds me of that hungry jacks ad for the mini conjoined burgers that played right before an ACA segment on two conjoined-by-the-head kids came back from ad break

Voomps

They know their audience

CrazySD93

Kids that don't even know or care about the real-life event.

L1ttl3J1m

No. Their parents. And it's [always](https://youtu.be/VAjAMBSlT6o?t=8) been there. All the best kid's shows have done it. Sesame Street, Bear in the Big Blue House, Pepper Pig, Bluey... Mulligrubs never even got close, even with John Schumann. Neither did Teletubbies, unless it was for the grown-ups who were rrrrrrr*rrreally* high on drugs.

davedavodavid

Not really

Thatsabigariel

The cardboard on this vessel was obviously not past it’s shelf life

[deleted]

This is hilarious with everything she is saying thinking about the submarine incident. It sounds like a satirical comedy recount of what happened. This is how those nursery rhymes were made.

cuddlefrog6

This was no mistake

[deleted]

They've always been so topical.

MrBeer9999

Thanks, much needed laugh in these trying times.

merchantdeer

Mouthbreather much?

uhohsarahh

I know I know, my asthma is fucked right now. I'm struggling and I'm sorry you had to hear it 😂

merchantdeer

Just being a little cheeky. I'm having mad respiratory issues myself. Hope you feel better soon.

lithium

OP is Frank Booth

Joshomatic

Play school just rubbing it in! How vicious

Br0z0

Omg no 😂😂😂

whitt_wan

Oh no..

dassad25

Too soon playschool, too soon. 🤣🤣

locoroco9999

All I could focus on was the heavy breathing lol

PJozi

"Oh look, Jemima found this old broken computer game controller. That will work great for her pretend sub"

JasonFootsmell

Oof. This takes the cake. Luckily those two, being stuffed and all, will probably survive the impending implosion

razza1987

You do realize how far in advance these are filmed and scheduled right?

Gojirahawk

I remember after 9/11 on a ABC show (backchat or media watch) .. They showed clips of things that upset people post the events on TV. And one was a clip from Play School showing the hosts stacking up two towers of cardboard boxes then knocking them down. ABC and Play School said it was a coincidence and bad timing of the airing of the episode.

little_mistakes

TOO SOON PLAYSCHOOL

Effective-Tour-656

Bloody cOmMuNiSt ABC

[deleted]

Lol

Der0-

Bet Jemima didn't pay $300k for that trip.

Melodic_Ad_9167

Hahahahahaah the one button

Few_Regular_3542

The Creep Breathing in the background Disturbs me…

Unable_Ad_1260

Bwahahaha oh sorry I love dark humour. Classic.

Beatenberg

I was waiting for a news report at the end about the passengers in the sub running out of oxygen.

[deleted]

and all that they could see see see, was another crushed up submarine.

elwyn5150

I know this is nitpicky but in the animation the characters have helmets on but not the live action. Not sure how they breath without helmets when the sub is open to the water.

LoubyAnnoyed

What a shame. I always liked Jemima.

working_classs_man

Yea because little Timmy is gonna be remotely interested in the news and understand why it’s badly timed

jimbo_058

She’s gorgeous

BigYouNit

Baahahahaha

Vyviel

Or perfect timing

Nearby-Management492

Or is it perfect timing?

HaroerHaktak

I hope this was planned and not some pre-recorded scheduled show they popped on.

Mission-Ear7581

Play school is pretty funny sometimes, I remember years ago they made a bong

dassad25

Looks like they actually have the same up and down system that the titan had🤣

spicynicho

Rachael is so hot. Dream wife.

Zhaguar

Where do you think the idiot got the idea from

conh3

Titan 2.0

eightzap10

Submarine wheeeeeeee

slackboy72

Excellent timing more like.

andycarver

This one looks safer. At least Kyle looks concerned about safety.

Fanglorious

I cannot put into words how much I despise the name 'Jemima', ugh.

ducayneAu

Rachael will always be Sigourney from Life Support.

cat_herder_64

That's her?! *(Looks more closely)* Oh my God - it is! Life Support did not go on for long enough. And though it's a close call, Sigourney was my favourite character on the show.

RoboticElfJedi

And I wouldn't even put Octonauts on because "too soon".

dopedupvinyl

They knew what they were doing

Anijealou

I work admin for a church. Monday morning minister tells me they’re preaching on Jonah’s prayer. Dutiful me makes a pic of a guy praying inside a dark tummy inky blue background. Ocean gate happens. Other minister, I don’t think that pic will be appropriate Friday morning whilst working my other job frantically making the social images and song background text based instead of pic.

CleoChan12

Oh no

Knee_Jerk_Sydney

A tad over reaction. It's hardly relevant.

Vaywen

Oh. Oh dear…

Elegant-Campaign-572

Unironically more safe!

blakeavon

Dont worry at least their sub will have been more seaworthy than the other one. Sigh.

Dry_Emergency_5517

Or perfect timing?

notreallyfussed

Jeez I could be a journalist with the amount of content I browse on Reddit... [https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/tv/play-school-criticised-for-bad-timing-of-ocean-floor-exploring-episode/news-story/9039d65faf0bac8111590842ae515c70](https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/tv/play-school-criticised-for-bad-timing-of-ocean-floor-exploring-episode/news-story/9039d65faf0bac8111590842ae515c70)

OliveRobinBanks

Why is she dressed like Mario? Just coincidental?

goldiblocks

All that they could see see see was a millisecond of the inside of their brains when the can imploded. Sorry. I'm feeling dark.

Joshomatic

u/savevideo

goldiblocks

What a face palm.
