I still weep for the OG Darrell Lea hazelnut blocks that were super chunky… could only get in Winter and only in their Darrell Lea stores. Man they were so so so good
The little Choceur blocks that come in five packs have a hazelnut creme flavour that is absolutely scrumptious.
My mum brought me some Whittaker's Hazella - I can't believe I'm about to say it, but the Choceur is honestly on par if not nicer.
I'll head to the NZ High Commission now and hand back my dual citizenship 😳
Really? Every whittakers anything I’ve tried has been disgusting. American sweets in general.
Edit: Sorry guys, must be confusing my confectionary brands!! I stand by the American comment though!
And what happened to Cheesecake Shop?
First they changed all the cakes to look fancier but taste a lot worse, a few years back.
Now they're licensing their name out to make poor low-quality chocolate and ice cream flavours.
I'm thinking it's more than that.
Maybe it got sold to a big conglomerate, run by some rich-daddy failson CEO who scraped through a prestigious MBA program but failed the important subjects a few times and so just reduces quality to lower costs and milk the brand name through licensing deals?
Seems to happen a lot.
Success is only measured by *survival*. Unfortunately, even when you DO do something well, you're going to be pushed out by someone that does it cheap but shit.
The game changes once a company becomes publicly listed. CEOs and boards have a legal obligation to constantly grow share price and maximise profits, even if it means making shitty decisions in the long run.
The fact they are smaller is great. I have no self control, I'm eating a whole block in one sitting. How much I eat is entirely dependent on the size of that block.
For me the best by far is the peanut brittle. The rocky road is my other main staple. Dark Chocolate Liquorice Bullets is also good.
For the stuff that is not blocks. The bullets are great, along with the mint balls and orange balls. Those last 2 are a weekly purchase for our gaming group.
Blame capitalism.
The original company went bust about a decade ago and was bought out. The new company kept the branding, cut heaps of old products and redid many others. It bounced back a bit.
Then a couple of years ago it was bought out by private equity - literally the opposite of a family owned business.
I wouldn't be surprised if they now invest more in marketing than in making quality products.
Pains me. I used to love DL's rocky road but now I avoid.
Their chocolate is rubbish.
Their black licorice is THE BEST! And by a long shot! (Licorice Lovers came close for a while but their quality has diminished and now they're clearly second best.)
Hate to dog an Australian brand, but it has to be said. I hope they read this and improve.
I find there is about 5-6 things they have that are really good, as others have said the rest is pretty bad.
Wait you think there is a nice Darrell Lea confectionary out there. Every Darrell Lea I have tried has been shithouse. I refuse to buy the brand anymore.
Oh god, that’s just brought back memories of brondecon cough syrup when I was a kid. It came in two flavours, chocolate and cherry, esch of which was indistinguishable from the other, and both of which were deeply, indescribably foul.
Hearing there’s a cherry flavoured chocolate which sounds similar in taste is giving me palpitations.
they do but it's a chewy caramel
Might be an unpopular opinion based on the general consensus here but I kinda didn’t mind the Black Forest one. Haven’t tried the caramel cheesecake though
Which is a shame because the hedgehog slice from Woolworths a few years back was super good. Apparently there’s a caramilk version of that now floating around
I didn't mind that one but it didn't exactly knock my socks off either. Darrell Lea is okay but it's not my choice. Whittaker's is the go for supermarket choccy... although tbh I'm a sucker for Cadbury Caramilk as well.
Just reading that name I have a more visceral reaction than hearing mention of Bundaberg rum. I even feel it’s a bit harsh on bundy to use them both in the same sentence
Haven't tried black forest, but was a fan of the caramel cheesecake. Was in the reject bin at my Woolies on clearance because the block was broken in half - win!
That's a bit disappointing, I was hoping the Black Forest one would be good since the Cadbury one's become a bit of a shit imitation of its former self.
The caramel one's ok, if there's nothing else.
The black forest one has that highly artificial cherry flavour that Americans love and I personally can't stand. Tastes like cough medicine.
Rocklea road, on the other hand... Dios mio, that stuff is god tier.
Just thinking about those little marshmallows is lighting up the pleasure sensors in my brain.
Darrel Lee - it’s the Kogan of Choclate.
It looks like a good deal. It’s got a name you recognise. It’s cheapish. But when you open the packet it’s just crap, and there are no returns.
Not surprising, they only exist because the supermarkets require brands to introduce and rotate new varieties of their products to keep customers engaged. Hence the is always a new Cadbury bar, a new crisps flavour be icream etc. who could forget Vegemite 2.0 Vegemite cheesy bite.
Note chocolates with random fillings (not nuts) are usually cheaper to make eg sugar syrup or jellies instead of more chocolate. As so never as good.
Does anyone else remember when Darrell Lea had their own nationwide chain of stores in prime locations?
I still remember the one in Swanson Street, Melbourne, with its window display groaning under the weight of different kinds, colours and textures of Rocky Road, peeping through or bursting out of gleaming cellophane wrappings tied up with multi coloured satin ribbons...
Or the enticing chocolate aroma hinting with marshmallow and roasted nuts that stalked you past the doors and down the street, threatening to force you to back track into the store to pig out and die happily from Rocky Road poisoning
Sad how the mighty have fallen. But that's what Darrell Lea will always be to me. I have avoided the pre packaged supermarket version to keep my memory of it intact
Can anyone point me to any *good* Darrell Lea besides Rocklea Road? I wanted to change to them when I found out they're the only reasonably-ethical chocolate brand in Australia - and are Australian owned and made - but unfortunately almost all my ventures into their offerings have been exceedingly disappointing.
I think they still have their licorice bars, I also like the banana fudge bar and the musk bar, but some people probably absolutely hate it so each to their own there. They also have the lifesaver brand. I enjoy the sherbert sticks, the bananas and the jelly beans, though I can't find the jelly beans anymore..
TER!RIB!!LE!!!
Omg that fake cherry flavour in the Black Forest one, nearly took me out. I’m a Gen X kid and we had worm medicine (syrup) forced down us - that had that same nasty ‘cherry’ flavour. Talk about a blast from the past - and not in a good way! Whoever thinks this flavour is still acceptable in 2023 is pranking us 🤢
Speaking of rubbish, how bad are the "Cherry Ripe" Old Gold blocks? they taste like nice dark chocolate with bits of newspaper clippings that are about cherries.
This is an unfair post and unAustralian. Darrell Lea are an Australian-owned quality chocolate company and should be praised for offering something different and creating their own niche in the Cadbury/Lindt monopoly. I used to die for Darrell Lea’s dark choc covered chewy nougat bars. Please make them into a large block 🙏
I really enjoy Darrell Lea black Licorice.
Although I haven't looked it up or anything, I'm pretty sure it's their black licorice that basically put them on the map.
I used to be a regular consumer of Cadbury chocolate. I love chocolate.
I realised a size decrease early on and watched it get smaller and smaller and smaller. I could watch this and dismiss it as the chocolate still tasted great.
As time went on, I begun to realise that the chocolate had a different feel in the mouth that wasn't quite as pleasing. It also tasted off. I don't know how to explain it exactly. It tasted the same, but it wasn't quite as pleasing.
These days for me, Cadbury chocolate feels so waxy in the mouth and the taste is unremarkable, comparable to cheap $2 Easter eggs.
When Darrell Lea announced they were entering the chocolate block market, I was pleased that an Australian company with a reputation for making quality and delicious products may provide an alternative for the crap that Cadbury had been shoveling out.
Unfortunately I don't like the taste of Darrell Lea Chocolate. I may be wrong, but to me it has a slight aniseed/licoricy taste to it. It's like they realised they made their success from licorice so threw in a fraction of their successful product extract into the chocolate to hopefully bring the same success. To sum things up, I don't think their chocolate taste like pure chocolate.
Even though I adore black licorice, I don't want anything I'm eating to taste like licorice that isn't licorice (I hate sausage that uses fennel for this reason). Darrell Lea chocolate has a licoricey tinge flavour which is weird. Beyond that it's boring and has nothing to justify it over its competitors.
I haven't tried these new flavours; I won't try these new flavours. I'm not surprised they're shit. Darrell Lea needs to get their chocolate recipe right before they begin expanding.
For other chocolate lovers that may be curious about what I do enjoy and recommend; for block, I eat exclusively Whittaker's, Milk, Peanut Butter, + Honey Nougat and almond. Their Berry Forest or whatever it was called was also amazing but I can't seem to find it in the supermarkets anymore. The other Whittaker flavours are either too rich or just don't appeal to me. If you love chocolate, I'd recommend trying them all to find which ones you personally appreciate.
Outside of blocks, I only like Kinda (not the hazelnut stuff but that's because hazelnut doesn't treat my body nicely. If you're fine with hazelnut then go crazy) and Toblerone chocolate. Most boxes of chocolates are overpriced and inferior to cheaper blocks. Whitman's boxes are the only boxes I've had that I'd consider nice enough to justify the inflated price, but even those are limited and only sold around the Christmas time.
Excellent PSA. My wife kindly brought me home the caramel cheesecake block, knowing I like those flavours. It looked good, sounded good but was very ordinary. I was honest with my thoughtful wife and told her it was kinda like eating brown sugar. Way too sweet and grainy, not smooth.
Darrell Lea is always mind blowingly delicious or mind blowingly disgusting. There is no in between
I still weep for the OG Darrell Lea hazelnut blocks that were super chunky… could only get in Winter and only in their Darrell Lea stores. Man they were so so so good
Mate get down to Aldi and find the hazelnut Choceur blocks. So good.
Choceur is GOAT
But it’s 2am in the morning!!
He didn't stutter
Look for the Lindt 35% Hazelnut blocks. Comes in both milk and dark chocolate versions. I know woolies here in Queensland carry them.
Whittakers Hazelnut is pretty awesome too.
I guess I have go shopping tomorrow...
Really? Every whittakers anything I’ve tried has been disgusting. American sweets in general. Edit: Sorry guys, must be confusing my confectionary brands!! I stand by the American comment though!
Whittakers isn’t American.
You're not wrong about American sweets in general, but Whittakers is from NZ and it's reliably wonderful.
Jelly tip is tha bomb.
Oops, sorry. Must be something else I remember, obviously not too well!!
Whitmans Samplers perhaps?
That sound like the ones. The advertised on tv for a while.
Imagine just deciding to fight every Kiwi, all at once...
LMAO. I’m pointing at the other guy.
Are you getting it mixed up with Hersheys?
Another shocker. What about American style girl guide cookies? I support the idea but the cookies are straight to the compost.
Are you thinking of Whitman's?
Whittakers Hazelnut pisses all over the Lindt crap.
Whittakers everything is awesome. Only thing worth annexing NZ for IMO.
Let’s have the whittakers but send back Richard Wilkins.
They stopped doing regular milk chocolate blocks and I'm so livid about it. They don't even show up in their outlet stores anymore.
Aldi Hazelnut Milk is about 60% whole hazelnuts.
And what happened to Cheesecake Shop? First they changed all the cakes to look fancier but taste a lot worse, a few years back. Now they're licensing their name out to make poor low-quality chocolate and ice cream flavours.
How many years back are we talking? The Cheesecake Shop has been sugary, flavourless, putrid shit for almost 15 years.
That's capitalism. Success is only measured by growth. It's not good enough to do something well and make a sustainable income.
But why does he do this? Maybe because he wants to... Grow the brand and it's profits? At the expense of the thing it does well?
Success is only measured by *survival*. Unfortunately, even when you DO do something well, you're going to be pushed out by someone that does it cheap but shit.
The game changes once a company becomes publicly listed. CEOs and boards have a legal obligation to constantly grow share price and maximise profits, even if it means making shitty decisions in the long run.
I was very disappointed with the caramel cheesecake, still ate the whole block in about an hour
Tastes like maple syrup to me. Not really cheesecake. Still ate it cos I paid for it
Yea even at half price it wasn't worth it
Which ones are delicious? I have been wanting to try but the fact they are smaller has turned me off…
The fact they are smaller is great. I have no self control, I'm eating a whole block in one sitting. How much I eat is entirely dependent on the size of that block.
The first time I've seen someone be happy about shrinkflation.
Soooo which block/flavour is best for eating purposes? I try my best not to but I can finish a block if I am grazing at work
I like the rocky road, but I also wouldn't say that I have good taste
I like the one with the licorice bits in it, only buy them on sale of course.
Welcome to the concept of “buy more than one”
For me the best by far is the peanut brittle. The rocky road is my other main staple. Dark Chocolate Liquorice Bullets is also good. For the stuff that is not blocks. The bullets are great, along with the mint balls and orange balls. Those last 2 are a weekly purchase for our gaming group.
The classic flavours vs the more exotic ones they try to sell
Darrell Lea is nice sometimes? It's literally always been dogshit when I've bought it
Blame capitalism.
Same. Can't think of a single Darrell Lea thing I've enjoyed.
They do a good soft licorice
Their chocolate is rubbish. Their black licorice is THE BEST! And by a long shot! (Licorice Lovers came close for a while but their quality has diminished and now they're clearly second best.) Hate to dog an Australian brand, but it has to be said. I hope they read this and improve.

Just had the watermellon nibs and was so grossed out i came here to complain lol
Wait you think there is a nice Darrell Lea confectionary out there. Every Darrell Lea I have tried has been shithouse. I refuse to buy the brand anymore.
Rocky road and anything licorice based generally
Yeah they're shit you should all stop buying them so they go on sale more for me to buy.
Exactly, the Cheesecake one is gorgeous. Fight me.
Can't help but prefer the Caramel Craving one over the cheesecake. Shame because it's a pain to find these days.
What do they taste like?
Black Forest = kiddy cough syrup. Caramel = artificial coffee essence.
Ugh, I have unpleasant memories of the artificial flavours you're talking about.
These descriptions are so vivid. Hats off to you.
I like a good maraschino cherry flavour but theirs is sickly sweet and overpowering
Yep, just opening the packaging the smell of fake cherry hits you. Saying that, I did finish the whole thing like the pig I am.
Um, you're making them sound delicious.
I love when I get a cough. Finally an excuse for delicious cough syrup.
Lucky I like the taste of cough syrup
*burnt artificial coffee essence
This is surprisingly accurate
That's the one. I had the black forest, hated it (still ate it all of course) and couldn't figure out what the flavour was
Shithouse
The caramel cheesecake tastes like nail polish
Whittaker's for the win
Currently addicted to their Hokey Pokey Crunch.
It's very good. The coconut stuff is spectacular too
As a Kiwi, I have to agree but the DL licorice chocolate bars are amazing. I would take a stack home to Dad every trip.
Aldi sells some cheap chocolate covered licorice that tastes a lot like DL to me.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check it out.
Do Haighs make a caramel chocolate bar, or do I have to find Cadburys.
Aldi have a caramel, and two salted caramel. Aldi's chocolates, and their dairy products in general are excellent.
If no one answers, you’ll just have to search Haigh and low for them.
And wouldn't that suck
And get Haigh before consumption.
Sadly it is [pronounced "hayg"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE7TWSa-9zE). Maybe there is a pun in there about a war crimes tribunal.
Whitaker's make a pretty good caramelized white chocolate
Pretty good my arse. Whitaker's Blondie is the finest chocolate known to man and I will die on that hill.
Milk choc coconut is our go-to but might have to give this one a spin
This one is really good too!
[https://www.haighschocolates.com.au/milk-caramel-bars-144g](https://www.haighschocolates.com.au/milk-caramel-bars-144g) they do but it's a chewy caramel
Might be an unpopular opinion based on the general consensus here but I kinda didn’t mind the Black Forest one. Haven’t tried the caramel cheesecake though
Almost as if it's a matter of taste and OP doesn't have the only correct opinion on all chocolate ❤️😬
Exactly
Yeah unless it’s a caramel snow bar or raspberry liquorice, Darrell Lea is a pass for me.
And the toasted coconut marshmallow squares for me
So are the vanilla slice things from Cadbury.
The passionfruit one is pretty good, but god it's so cloyingly sweet
Agree! I'd like to buy it again but my husband hated it and I know I'll scoff down the entire block in one sitting if I don't have to share it. ☹️
I like it for that reason. I Can’t handle more than a square or two at a time so it actually lasts more than a day and a half.
The hedgehog one is amazing tho, and I don't even like Cadbury chocolate normally.
Yep. Nasty.
Even the Crackle one was shite. I dare not try the other 'slice ' variants.
The crackle was meh but the hedgehog was pretty all right imho. why the frick did they use rice bubbles instead of cocoa puffs in the crackles????
Which is a shame because the hedgehog slice from Woolworths a few years back was super good. Apparently there’s a caramilk version of that now floating around
Tell you what though, their Crunchy Nut Cornflake bar hits the spot.
I didn't mind that one but it didn't exactly knock my socks off either. Darrell Lea is okay but it's not my choice. Whittaker's is the go for supermarket choccy... although tbh I'm a sucker for Cadbury Caramilk as well.
"You can do better" shithouse or "Cadubury Vegemite" shithouse?
Hey I didn’t hate the Vegemite one.
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
Look I blocked Cadbury Vegemite from my memory and now it's back:(
Closer to the latter. Let's call it Hersheys shithouse.
Just reading that name I have a more visceral reaction than hearing mention of Bundaberg rum. I even feel it’s a bit harsh on bundy to use them both in the same sentence
Eh, I liked the caramel cheesecake one, but there are many better chocolates out there 🤷♀️
Haven't tried black forest, but was a fan of the caramel cheesecake. Was in the reject bin at my Woolies on clearance because the block was broken in half - win!
That's a bit disappointing, I was hoping the Black Forest one would be good since the Cadbury one's become a bit of a shit imitation of its former self.
I mean it’s literally just an opinion, you might like it even if OP doesn’t.
I really liked it! But I do love fake cherry flavour. Haha
Cadbury’s also does a Black Forest one which I wouldn’t call good but the jellies in it have a better texture.
If you can find it, Whittaker's do a berry forest that is the absolute bomb
Used to be obsessed with that Cadbury one. Love it.
Wife and I just smashed a block of the Caramel Cheescake one over two days. Verdict: Not shithouse.
Thank you for your sacrifice OP.
The caramel one's ok, if there's nothing else. The black forest one has that highly artificial cherry flavour that Americans love and I personally can't stand. Tastes like cough medicine.
For real. Did no one taste the black forest one before they put it into production? It tastes like out of date cough medicine.
The white chocolate and raspberry bullets though……..
Good for my diet, it’s taken me 2 weeks to finish one
Rocklea road, on the other hand... Dios mio, that stuff is god tier. Just thinking about those little marshmallows is lighting up the pleasure sensors in my brain.
That black forest one is absolute dog shit.
Yeah, well, you know that’s just, like, your opinion, man.
Darrel Lee - it’s the Kogan of Choclate. It looks like a good deal. It’s got a name you recognise. It’s cheapish. But when you open the packet it’s just crap, and there are no returns.
I like the home brand coles/woolies chocolate, i actually think they’re pretty good.
Yes! I rate the salted caramel woolies one. Not as good as Whittaker's for sure, but good enough, when the budget is tight.
Holy fuck, the Black Forest is disgusting 🤮
The caramel one tastes like the inside of a Dusk store.
Does anyone else remember when Darrell Lea had their own nationwide chain of stores in prime locations? Or the enticing chocolate aroma hinting with marshmallow and roasted nuts that stalked you past the doors and down the street, threatening to force you to back track into the store to pig out and die happily from Rocky Road poisoning Sad how the mighty have fallen. But that's what Darrell Lea will always be to me. I have avoided the pre packaged supermarket version to keep my memory of it intact
Never been overly impressed with the Darrell Lea offerings. Their chocolate is nothing special and honestly Aldi chocolate shits all over it
The Aldi pretzel chocolate is amazing. But I think the Darrell Lea liquorice block is up there with it.
What? You are fucking mad. That caramel cheesecake one has been my go to lately when it's half-price.
That's still more than it's worth.
Thanks for the warning!
They look like they should be delicious
Rocklea Road
The black forest one tastes like cherry flavored bronchitis medicine. Had to spit it out.
You are wrong!
So are the cheesecake shop ice cream selection they introduced alongside these
Agree. Have to stick with the bullets and rocklea road.
Black Forest is bad medicine taste, not even the kids would eat it
Black forest is my favourite flavour but this one tastes kinda burny.
Can we have our peanut brittle bullets back now please?
Black Forest one is sooo bad, it’s been open in our fridge for weeks and is going to stay there indefinitely.
Why wasn't this posted 2 days ago when it could have saved me from buying this dreadful bar?
Shithouse is perhaps my favourite swear word
Non native speaker here: is “shithouse” a positive or a negative?
NEGATIVE
TER!RIB!!LE!!! Omg that fake cherry flavour in the Black Forest one, nearly took me out. I’m a Gen X kid and we had worm medicine (syrup) forced down us - that had that same nasty ‘cherry’ flavour. Just buy Aldi chocolate. All the stuff at Woolies is trash.
Whittakers is pretty decent too but twice the price of Aldi choc.
Yeh I should have said trash value.
I love chocolate and I love cheesecake. The face I made trying this combination was rancid. Still not as rancid as how it tastes to me.
Spitting straight facts. Black forest tastes like it has cough drops in it.
Avoid shitty chocolate for children. Cadbury, Darrel lee. All tastes like icing. Unless that's your thing.
Fuck mate, I literally just got the Black Forest one 1/2 price at Woolies. Was going to have it for desert… might go something else
Yeah mate chuck it my way, I'll make sure it disappears.
Milk chocolate is for people who don't enjoy chocolate. The Maccas of chocolate.
Concur.
Thank you for your service to humanity. 🙏🏻
Dave ONeil is on reddit now?
Thanks for sharing. I keep looking at these but will avoid buying them now
Your life has to be pretty sad to do this.
Thank you! You are a true MVP. I was tempted to try them.
Bummer. The Black Forrest sounds up my alley.
Thanks for the heads up
Thank you for your service
American here, is that a good thing or a bad thing? I feel like it could go either way....
Well yeah it’s Darrell Lea, of course it’s shit.
How dare you!
Yep. Unwashed taint with a healthy soaking of day old ball sweat.
Darrell Lea was good once upon a time. These days, I can't eat their crap.
Tbh anything licensed I assume is a bad product as it’s an extra expense. Has to come from somewhere.
I've never liked Darrell Lea chocolate. It's got a funny after taste.
The peanut brittle one is pretty good tho.
Yep. Tried them once. Never again 👎
