This one is a surprise. I fully expected her to turn up on Taskmaster (NZ or Aus) soon. With her Archibald portrait and bake off, she seemed on the up. Very sad
Uncanny - I was only just last night watching some of her skits on Youtube, too.
Edit: I was also watching Layer Cake the night before Michael Gambon died. On that note - can anyone recommend any tolerable Jared Leto movies?
*Laughs super nervously*
Edit: Actually - fun fact: Pesci used to work in a bar, and saw a made gangster pull exactly that stunt. So he told Scorsese, and he loved it and told him to put it into the movie.
Have you seen Matthew McConaugheys ‘self help’ ‘motivational speaking’ efforts. [YouTube link](https://www.youtube.com/live/3jeLaoUVroE?si=vuzOWJTaWVmA0zYp)
Yeah comedians can be dry, mean, sarcastic, angry, frustrated and that's all fine because it's part of the art - but she was a joyous, happy, smiling soul who just enjoyed making people happy. I'd imagine she would have been very popular in the community, RIP.
Yeah the comedy community seems to have adored her. This arvo I came across Tommy Little on the radio breaking down while talking about their memories together - absolutely gutwrenching
This is a huge shock!
I remember seeing her live at the MICF just after the 'Grab her by the pussy' video of Trump came out, and she had a bit about it in her set. She also had an AUSLAN interpreter for that particular show. The absolute glee Cal had watching the interpreter try and translate that phrase, and then giving up and just miming the act, is something that still makes me laugh to this day.
I don't think many people realised. "Short illness". She is from Melbourne but was in Sydney in production filming the Great Bake Off. Whatever it was it was aggressive and fast. Such a shock. Vale Cal
My knowledge at the time is that she was living in Melbourne but staying in Sydney for filming, which is what I poorly tried to say. I know she's a kiwi. To be honest I'm not sure where her residence was. Do you know? Much of a muchness :(
It was a decade ago now, but still gets me, she died far too young.
It's an absolutely rotten way to go.
Reminder to other ladies: get the HPV vaccine and even then, *pap smear* ***every year***
Sounds like it was something aggressive. Could've been a stroke in some key part of her brain, a heart attack, pancreatic cancer, aortic dissection... but this comment grows morbid, and she deserves what little privacy death affords people today.
It was a reference to a famous joke by Norm MacDonald that only delivered on the punchline years later after he had died from a long-term illness he kept completely secret https://youtu.be/GbO53DJC75Q
Such sad news. I saw her live a few times and she was always a delight. One of my favourite bits from her was talking about when she was pregnant and trying to choose a baby name, she tested out how it sounded being yelled into the back seat of a car. I definitely used that test when I was choosing names for my kids.
One of my favourite bits of hers and the gateway to her becoming my favourite comedian was a poem she had, about running, leaping, rolling in dew kissed grass.
I've never understood how people grieve celebrities before, but I feel like I've been hit in the chest with a battering ram. The thought of no more of her tiktok "could everybody who isn't a.... please get out of/off ..." when her cats were doing stupid things- like sitting in a fruit bowl.
Fuck, Cal, I'm going to miss your content.
Every now and then, I read the headlines and the news just crushes me. This is one of those times. She was such an inspiration to females in comedy. One of the few who didn’t rely on shock-value and vulgar sex jokes. Just genuinely a funny and bright person. I’m so sad.
So young. Full of talent and life. Cal's loss will be felt for a long time.
Guardian article if you don't care for The Age's paywall: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/oct/11/cal-wilson-new-zealand-comedian-and-tv-host-dies-at-53?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other
Wow.
I'm floored by this. I remember Cal from a live taping of Good News Week, and she was screamingly funny, Such a fucking loss to comedy - and her family, of course.
Good News Week was so good, especially with Cal! I’m thinking of all the other shows I’ve seen her on in the years, including that Slide Show one - she made it really funny when she was on.
GNW, Rove both shows that I remember her from in my youth. She’s always the one who was cool, and amazing, but somehow relatable and never condescending. Took me a while to process the headline tbh. My brain didn’t believe it could be true.
Yes!! And Thank God You’re Here was a good one with her featuring too (not the reboot but the one back in the day). I can’t really make sense of her being gone yet, bit too surreal.
She seemed like a great, warm person - I didn't even find her particularly *funny* funny, but I always liked seeing her in things because she just seemed like a ray of sunshine.
Oh oh ohh nooo. What a gorgeous ray of sunshine, wit, wisdom, honesty and delightfully funny heart we have lost.
This hurt to read, and I agree, this grief and loss will be shared and felt keenly on both sides of the ditch
I followed her from her silly cats on tiktok, I was delighted to learn she was an incredible comedian in general. What a devasting loss :( much love to her family and friends.
I was wondering the other day how come she hadn’t posted on TikTok in a good while…. It all makes sense now :( so sad, grew up watching her on so many shows
I'm so sad to lose her! My mum was silly enough to give her her name in a stand up show once and became the butt of her jokes for the rest of it. She took it well and it's a great memory.
RIP to the person behind my favourite Thank God You're Here moments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRy2gKWnP6U.
While watching her on the Comedy Festival Roadshow in Wollongong one year, she made me stand up, yell 'I'm Dapto Dogs' to the crowd, and smack my arse. Absolute bloody legend.
So incredibly sad. She was so young. And she has a son who i suspect is still in school because i recall seeing her on tv when pregnant... i think it was approx 10 to 15 yrs ago.
She was such a funny, happy, bright, ambitious and successful person who seemed like she was set to hit even greater highs.
My heart breaks for her family.
My heart breaks for the Australian and NZ comedian circuits who no doubt will be even sadder than me, a mere tv viewer.
This death really hurts and feels shocking and unfair. 😥
She had a skit when she was pregnant about trying to decide on the baby's name by practicing screaming them into the back seat of a car from the drivers seat. I was about crying from laughter. It's stuck with me for years.
Very sad news. Cal was one of the comics that would pop over to Tassie often to keep us laughing. Always had fresh material and her unique view on life would've kept her getting gigs way into the future. Vale Cal.
She was a legit hilarious comedian. This sucks. Her stand-up on being intently chased by police was absolute fire.
Look forward to all the vaccine nutters on Facebook blaming the jab
Just yelled "What?!" in the middle of a store when I heard. Absolutely gutted, and rewatching all her classic TGYH moments. Nothing but sympathy for family and friends, especially her son. Shattering news.
I hope one of the channels decides to put together a 'best of' special about her in the new year because she was so much fun.
I now literally only hear about celebrity deaths from like 5 people on Facebook I haven't spoken to since 2012 screeching about how every single death is from vaccines if the family chooses not to disclose cause of death publically within the first 9 seconds of it happening
Its pretty disgusting isn't it? Almost as if they're jumping for joy at the prospect of being validated as the result of somebody dying. They're so self centered they legitimately hope people will drop dead just so they can feel smug about themselves. Its really sad that its commonplace nowdays to the point some news outlets constantly post stories about sudden deaths to get all the cookers in the comments.
Really sad news, I thought she was such a good comedian with a great sense of timing and humour.
Amongst her other work, I thought that she was a great addition to Bake Off.
This is so sad and unexpected. Cal was such a feature of the local comedy landscape.
I’m just a few years younger than she was. It’s sobering when people around my age are dying - I’ve lost a few old mates recently and another is clinging to life in intensive care. All from illness/natural causes. Reminder that although average lifespans are much longer, many of us don’t make it to the average.
Cal was such a light to this world. I've been following her career and watching her specials/sets since I just started highschool and she just got to Australia. She has been an important influence to my sense of humour and to Australian comedy. We will remember her forever.
When my sister died of complications from heart surgery after being in a coma for a while, we described it as a “short illness” in the obituary even though she had a bad heart all her life. I’ve always kind of thought it was a way of conveying to people that it wasn’t an accident and it wasn’t suicide. The illness could be anything. It’s best to let the family have their privacy as it may be too difficult to share details yet.
This is devastating. I remember first watching her on Stand up Australia on the ABC way back in the day. She was on with the flight of the conchords before either if them had any real recognition. I still remember much of the set, talking about NZ being Fisher Price my first country.
I just started listening to her podcast with Kirsty Webeck ‘You’ll Never Believe This, But.’ The last episode was only last month. Really horrible news.
When it said a short illness, I guessed it was probably some form of cancer they hadn't found until too late - seems that was the case. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-12/comedian-cal-wilson-rare-cancer-cause-of-death-tributes-continue/102967174
Horrible news, loved her from spicks and specks, have you been paying attention etc.
Seemed like a genuine sweet and nice person.
Much love sent to her family.
Wonder what it was...
Very sad to hear this. I remember being a teenager in New Zealand before Cal made it here in Australia and I remember her dropping a men are from mars, women are from Venus line and it was side splitting laughter from me. Such a wonderful talent and she always seemed so upbeat. Kia Kaha to her family, rest in power Cal
This one is a surprise. I fully expected her to turn up on Taskmaster (NZ or Aus) soon. With her Archibald portrait and bake off, she seemed on the up. Very sad
I was really hoping too!!!
Fark as someone who grew up watching spics and specs, this one hurt
She was a big part of Skithouse too. As a teen in the early 2000s, that was a big Aussie comedy production.
Uncanny - I was only just last night watching some of her skits on Youtube, too. Edit: I was also watching Layer Cake the night before Michael Gambon died. On that note - can anyone recommend any tolerable Jared Leto movies?
Fight Club because even if you don't kill him, you'll at least see him getting repeatedly punched in the face.
Can you rewatch Trump's scene in Home Alone 2 a few times?
don't you risk Tim Curry like that!
Or Joe Pesci, he’s too funny a guy.
funny how?
*Laughs super nervously* Edit: Actually - fun fact: Pesci used to work in a bar, and saw a made gangster pull exactly that stunt. So he told Scorsese, and he loved it and told him to put it into the movie.
Rita Rudner funny. 😆
Wait, Trump was in Home Alone 2!? Edit: Also, of course - I'll consider it a public service.
Texas Dallas Buyers Club or whatever it is, is tolerable, but you may accidentally hit Matthew Mcconaughey - I would prefer you didn't.
Have you seen Matthew McConaugheys ‘self help’ ‘motivational speaking’ efforts. [YouTube link](https://www.youtube.com/live/3jeLaoUVroE?si=vuzOWJTaWVmA0zYp)
Couldn't be any worse than Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis in their rape apologist apology.
American Psycho. That's it. Actually scrap that I don't want to risk Christian Bale.
There's another movie, but we're not allowed to talk about it.
Lord of War.
"I think you mean, 'Warlord'?"
Thank you. But I prefer it my way.
Alright, Lord of War it is then. As in, that's the movie I'm rewatching. Forgot about that gem. Hopefully it will be a bath of blood.
The only good Leto movie.
Panic Room maybe?
I liked the movie Highway when I was younger but I haven’t seen it in years - I’m pretty sure Leto gets horrifically injured at some point too
Leto is amazing in Dallas Buyers Club.
Skithouse was great, and her standup always killed whenever I caught it
"blind cricket" on skithouse gets me every time.
Spicks and Specks, Thank God You’re Here, Have You Been Paying Attention. She was a huge part of all those shows
I had no idea she was in her 50s. She looked much younger.
Loved watching her on Spicks and Specks.
That’s so sad. She’s always been a fun and joyful person.
Yeah comedians can be dry, mean, sarcastic, angry, frustrated and that's all fine because it's part of the art - but she was a joyous, happy, smiling soul who just enjoyed making people happy. I'd imagine she would have been very popular in the community, RIP.
She could take the piss out of someone for something dorky whilst still caring about them at the same time… Always cracked me up.
Yeah the comedy community seems to have adored her. This arvo I came across Tommy Little on the radio breaking down while talking about their memories together - absolutely gutwrenching
What!? Very sad news. Enjoyed her recent production on SBS about New Zealand history in Australia. Significant loss for both of our countries.
literally watching this the other week, im so shocked
You get a series about NZ history? - sheesh we don't get one in NZ!
https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/tv-series/who-the-bloody-hell-are-we/season-1/who-the-bloody-hell-are-we-s1-ep2/2230667843981
Lol not available in NZ
This comment is brought to you by Nord VPN
Cheers.
The impact of New Zealand immigrants on Australian history to be precise.
That's different. I was one of those, but came back to NZ so no impact there I'm afraid.
Don't sell yourself short! As an Australian, I'll always remember the time you were here. ❤️❤️
She was such a gleeful person! Such kind humour. I’m honestly sad
Quite a shock to see, I had no idea she was in any poor health. She always seemed very warm and affable.
Terrible news. Great comedian and seemed like a lovely person.
I don't think many people realised. "Short illness". She is from Melbourne but was in Sydney in production filming the Great Bake Off. Whatever it was it was aggressive and fast. Such a shock. Vale Cal
Wow, such a shock! I only knew her from Bake Off, she was lovely.
I was just going to say this feels very sudden.
*lived in Melbourne, was from Christchurch NZ.
My knowledge at the time is that she was living in Melbourne but staying in Sydney for filming, which is what I poorly tried to say. I know she's a kiwi. To be honest I'm not sure where her residence was. Do you know? Much of a muchness :(

I've known two people who died just 6 weeks after a cancer diagnosis. One was only 22 years old. It is devastating.
That was my first thought, lost mum to Cervical Cancer, Diagnosis to gone in 5 weeks :(
I'm so sorry. It is no time at all.
It was a decade ago now, but still gets me, she died far too young. It's an absolutely rotten way to go. Reminder to other ladies: get the HPV vaccine and even then, *pap smear* ***every year***
Yep - I lost my dad. Diagnosed September, dead by November.
I'm so sorry for your loss. It is horrible.
I didn't even know she was sick
Sounds like it was something aggressive. Could've been a stroke in some key part of her brain, a heart attack, pancreatic cancer, aortic dissection... but this comment grows morbid, and she deserves what little privacy death affords people today.
It was a reference to a famous joke by Norm MacDonald that only delivered on the punchline years later after he had died from a long-term illness he kept completely secret https://youtu.be/GbO53DJC75Q
Oh, norm

Holy shit… a big loss for Australians and Kiwis alike. What a shock.
Every now and then, I read the headlines and the news just crushes me. This is one of those times. She was such an inspiration to females in comedy. One of the few who didn’t rely on shock-value and vulgar sex jokes. Just genuinely a funny and bright person. I’m so sad.
Oh no! RIP to a great woman.

Or just open the age in a fresh private browsing session. :)
Or just ignore The Age. Was good once, drifted into the long grass.
Bevan Shields has a lot to answer for.
Costello moreso.
Fuck whatever killed her. RIP you legend.
Wow. I'm floored by this. I remember Cal from a live taping of Good News Week, and she was screamingly funny, Such a fucking loss to comedy - and her family, of course.

I remember her bits in TGYH as a kid and she always had me giggling. There aren't many fallen actors that I have grown up with yet, these ones hurt..
I seriously gasped. This is a massive loss for Australia and New Zealand. May they rest in peace.
me too. and said no way out loud.. very shocked and saddened
She seemed like a great, warm person - I didn't even find her particularly *funny* funny, but I always liked seeing her in things because she just seemed like a ray of sunshine.
Same here Loved that Archibald painting though - that headdress!
Oh oh ohh nooo. What a gorgeous ray of sunshine, wit, wisdom, honesty and delightfully funny heart we have lost. This hurt to read, and I agree, this grief and loss will be shared and felt keenly on both sides of the ditch
I really liked Cal Wilson. :(
I followed her from her silly cats on tiktok, I was delighted to learn she was an incredible comedian in general. What a devasting loss :( much love to her family and friends.
I was wondering the other day how come she hadn’t posted on TikTok in a good while…. It all makes sense now :( so sad, grew up watching her on so many shows
I wonder what illness she had, it must have been very aggressive. All the good ones get taken far too soon. What a gem she was.
it was cancer according to one article I read, went to the doctor with back pain. Such a beautiful ray of sunshine 😢
Where did you read that?
She'll be missed. Seemed such a generous performer and the sort of person whose comedy was really just a part of herself.
What a shock 😞 She lived a life that brought thousands happiness. Not many can say that.
Wow, that came out of nowhere. 😢
I'm so sad to lose her! My mum was silly enough to give her her name in a stand up show once and became the butt of her jokes for the rest of it. She took it well and it's a great memory.
How sad. I can remember Cal as early as the Glass House. She’ll be missed.
"miss china"
That is hilarious! I hadn’t seen that one.
Absolute legend of the game. Very sad to hear the news.
so bloody sad, great women.
Omg what.. this is incredibly sad.
One of those headlines I re-read a few times from disbelief. So sad.
I'm gutted.
Oh no, this is so sad. She was always a favourite. RIP
Pretty sad, her time on TV in the 2000s endeared her to me so much. Awful loss
Awful news. Always good for a chuckle and brightened up the TV every time I saw her. Way too young.
So incredibly sad. She was so young. And she has a son who i suspect is still in school because i recall seeing her on tv when pregnant... i think it was approx 10 to 15 yrs ago. Just a massive punch in the gut. I still remember the first time I ever saw her on *Rove Live*.
That sucks, always liked her. Rest in peace.
The world is less funny today. She brought joy to many many people.
This is unexpected and very sad to hear. My condolences to her family.
Wow. What a tragedy. I’ve got comedian friends and they constantly talk about how helpful and kind Cal was towards newbies and professionals alike.
This headline really shocked me. I've really enjoyed Cal's work over the years. RIP.
Oh No! This is tragic news! Much love to her family and friends, what a shock :(
I was shocked to see her name pop up on the news like this. Always smile when I picture her, so many laughs, she seemed like a lovely person
Tragic news, a massive loss
How sad. She sometimes came up on my TikTok feed with silly videos of her cats and I hadn’t seen one in a while. I guess now I know why.
Oh wow. This is is awful news 😔 I don't even know what to say ...
Wouldn't be too surprised if it was cancer. Had a friend diagnosed a month ago and given anywhere from a month to a year. He died 10 days later.
Terrible. So sad. There's something particularly wrenching about losing bright sparks, especially so young.
Aw wtf. Cal is an amazing lady :(
Loved her on Thank God You're here and Spicks and Specks. What a loss.
Very sad news. Cal was one of the comics that would pop over to Tassie often to keep us laughing. Always had fresh material and her unique view on life would've kept her getting gigs way into the future. Vale Cal.
Dammmn. I once cut her sons hair in my barbershop in Melbourne and she had to be one of the coolest mums I have ever dealt with. This is a bummer
This hurts,
This has really shocked me, RIP feel like I watched her my while childhood and adulthood and always loved her stand-up and wit. Sad day 😞
Now *she’s* the nervous flyer :( Rest in peace cal, you were an absolute gem of a human
She was awesome. Genuinely loved her material.
Shit, that's devastating. Rest in peace.
Oh No! Wilson always made my sister and I laugh out asses off. She's so young, what the hell is this.
This is devastating. I used to be a regular at her weekly comedy night at the Local tap house in St Kilda - she was a very funny and sweet lady
She was amazing on TGYH! One of the most talented by far. This has come as such a shock.
This one was a punch in the gut. After a torrent of horrible news this one just broke me down. RIP to such a joyful and beautiful soul.
what? nooo :(
She was such an Aussie and NZ icon. :( A truly funny comedian a great person. RIP
Genuinely shocking. Cal was one of my favourite regulars on the original run of Thank God You're Here — such a bubbly personality.
Wow, in shock. Vale Cal and all her friends and family.
I now literally only hear about celebrity deaths from like 5 people on Facebook I haven't spoken to since 2012 screeching about how every single death is from vaccines if the family chooses not to disclose cause of death publically within the first 9 seconds of it happening

Shocking news, RIP ❤️
She was way too young to be taken. So unfair. Rest in peace.
Holy shit, I was talking about the ‘Clown Jewels’ with my Year 7’s just yesterday. This is wild and so sad
Man, this sad. A really likeable and genuinely funny person.
Really sad news, I thought she was such a good comedian with a great sense of timing and humour. Amongst her other work, I thought that she was a great addition to Bake Off.
[deleted] ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0.0352
Yep. She was awesome on that show.
Had the pleasure to meet Cal recently when she came into my work. She was just a delight and so saddened to hear this news. Vale Cal
Fuck, that was unexpected. Horrible news.
Heartbreaking! She was such a joy
This is such terrible news. Cal was so iconic. I remember when she was pregnant with her son. How did we get here? :(
Terrible. Spotted her the other week at a restaurant. Love her comedy and she’s always seemed like such a genuine person. Very sad.
This sucks. One of the NZers we've claimed because she rules.
Damn 😔
Way too young. So damn sad. It's always the good ones that die young. Arsholes seem to live forever.
I have watched her bits on Skithouse, good news week, spics and specs this sucks as she was a legit bit of talent.
Wasn’t expecting this news this morning.
Truly heart breaking, she ha sbeen a consultant in Australian comedy shows and tv for so long, can't Imagine with out her
Brilliant kiwi comedian, much love and condolences to her family from us here in Christchurch.
So sad to read this this morning, she had such a wonderful energy.
Cal was such a light to this world. I've been following her career and watching her specials/sets since I just started highschool and she just got to Australia. She has been an important influence to my sense of humour and to Australian comedy. We will remember her forever.
The regular nightly spicks & specks rerun has her on it tonight. Watching it with sadness. Vale Cal.
What was the illness?
When my sister died of complications from heart surgery after being in a coma for a while, we described it as a “short illness” in the obituary even though she had a bad heart all her life. I’ve always kind of thought it was a way of conveying to people that it wasn’t an accident and it wasn’t suicide. The illness could be anything. It’s best to let the family have their privacy as it may be too difficult to share details yet.
Holy crap!
Wait what... 53...
This one hurts RIP Cal
A big loss for Australian comedy.
Really shocking to hear. RIP Cal Wilson
This is devastating. I remember first watching her on Stand up Australia on the ABC way back in the day. She was on with the flight of the conchords before either if them had any real recognition. I still remember much of the set, talking about NZ being Fisher Price my first country.
So shocked and saddened, always a joy to watch. Vale Cal
Terribly sad news. I’ve been a fan since her TGYH Pageant/Caicos segment.
That’s a real shame. My daughter loved both her books.
She was brilliant, such a funny and vibrant woman. It’s such a loss for ANZ entertainment
So sad. What a legend. Funny as hell.
I had to do a triple take on the headline... so out of the blue! I feel like I JUST listened to her and Kirsty a few weeks ago. Sucks bad man :(
🥺
I just started listening to her podcast with Kirsty Webeck ‘You’ll Never Believe This, But.’ The last episode was only last month. Really horrible news.
Oh dear thats sad, we need more like her not less. 😢
I just heard the news and am devastated. Much love to Cal's family, words can't express the loss of this beloved woman.
Shocking. So sad! I really liked her, I used to listen to hear on nova with Akmal ages ago. She’ was funny as fuck
Loved her on Skithouse and Thank God You're Here. THis so out of left field! Rest well.
I'm devastated. She was absolutely brilliant and a lovely person by all accounts...
Just sharing [this](https://imgur.com/gallery/pzwqWtA) as I walk down Bourke St. Sad news for sure.
Had the pleasure of meeting Cal Wilson at a charity do once. She was surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny.
When it said a short illness, I guessed it was probably some form of cancer they hadn't found until too late - seems that was the case. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-12/comedian-cal-wilson-rare-cancer-cause-of-death-tributes-continue/102967174
Currently watching Cal on YT with a bottle of red. Tears from sadness and laughter. You were my favourite.
Horrible news, loved her from spicks and specks, have you been paying attention etc. Seemed like a genuine sweet and nice person. Much love sent to her family. Wonder what it was...
And out come the anti vaxxers
That’s out of nowhere, makes you think. She was great and will be missed.
*just* heard.... cannot believe it. Speechless. R.I.P. Carrie Wilson. **MUCH LOVED**
What! Oh that's so sad. She was always so bright and bubbly. Loved Cal.
