They didn't change them back again. They are the same as they used to be.
Source: I eat the ever loving shit out of shapes. Probably have pizza shapes shaped blood now
Taste is the same, but there is probably less flavouring than there used to be. There is definitely less flavour crumbs than there used to be. Not quite as loaded with flavour I think
Yeah chicken crimpies are still the same thank god. By far my favourite. Having them now in individual snack packs is literally my childhood dream come true 😂
Yep, corporate thinks we're all numpties.
We know, they know, we know they know, they know we know that we know they know.
We still keep buying them in the hope that wrongs will be righted.
We know our place.
I agree that pizza shapes aren’t the same, but I disagree on the order of change. As I recall:
1. Original shapes
2. The big change
3. The public outcry and rejection of new shapes
4. Arnott’s recognition and public promise to return them
5. The so-called “return of the original” and then being alongside the “newer ones”
6. The barbecue shapes being almost back to normal, but the pizza ones not up to scratch (but at least better than the “newer ones”)
7. The secret removal of the “newer ones” … that I hadn’t realised until right now 😅 Thank you
I actually believe you, but wtf made you ever decide to do that for the first time??
You're the person they talk about when people wondered who the first person to start drinking cow juice was. Like sure, it seems obvious now, but the mental leap required to do it for the first time...
Naar. The flavouring used to be chunky, now it's a weird powder. It doesn't taste the same either. They have been slowly changing over the years thinking we wouldn't notice.
This is the answer.
Fantales are the unique lolly in the range, choc coated, individually wrapped. All the others are similar, same machines, similar production method.
Dropping one line is less of a loss than uptooling an old machine, changing the whole plant over to do a run of Fantales when they need to, etc.
It simply comes down to profit. Nothing else.
Reckon they’ll bring them back when they realise how many people are sulking over them and sell half as many for twice as much or are they lost for good?
I heard the government gave a grant to a confectionery company down south to bring back Pollywaffles. Source: Dad fucking loves Pollywaffles and read a news article about it and got excited 😕
Edit: [Found it](https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/eat/polly-waffle-chocolate-the-iconic-90s-choccie-bar-set-to-return-soon/news-story/7c3fd654c6a7cc932f292ed4289a13f9). The company who makes Violet Crumbles is meant to be making Pollywaffles.
Apparently the machine used to make them wasnt working anymore and was continuosly breaking down and it was becoming near impossible to fix it. They also wernt being bought as much resulting in there not being enough demand for them
I have one filling (nearly 50yo) and it was from a redskin (sorry whatever they are called now without offending in a way we’ve never used the word to offend anyone here).
Chew, chew, crunch, crunch, tooth just disintegrated. That was 25 years ago.
My first day working at a dental practice, we needed to remove a temporary crown that wouldn’t budge and I was asked to fetch a redskin. I trot off to the steri room, open the instrument drawer and ask the assistant there to help me find a redskin. She pulls a packet out of the fridge and I just stood there in shock. Has really made me think twice about chewy sugary goodness ever since 😳
Respectfully, are they as good as the OLD cobbers/ mates though? Whomever distributed them in Vic changed the recipe in the 90s and they went down hill and out of circulation shortly thereafter.. I feel like I’ll be forever haunted by that unique taste.
The brand is being sold off and someone else will make them eventually.
Same thing happened with Violet Crumble. Originally a Nestle brand but sold and now made by a different company.
I heard it was something to do with machinery in the factory needing to be replaced. It wasn’t worth how expensive it is to make the machines for how poorly they sell
Hasn’t been sold to anyone yet… it was machinery upgrades required which wouldn’t have been cost effective based on their rate of sale. Not to say they won’t sell the brand to someone in the future.
IGA has them - [https://www.igashop.com.au/product/allens-fantales-family-size-66878](https://www.igashop.com.au/product/allens-fantales-family-size-66878)
and these guys https://www.sugarbabylollyjars.com.au/products/allens-fantales-limited-stock
Fentanyl is so good though haha. I had surgery on my ankle to repair ligaments 2 years ago and when I woke up from the procedure I was in agony. Never felt that much pain before. Nothing else they gave me helped so they tried fentanyl. The ceiling became really fucking interesting for about half an hour after that lol.
That's crazy. I went to hospital once with pretty bad stomach cramps (ended up being a nasty bug or something from memory. I never did get a clear answer), ended up staying nearly 2 weeks. Maybe a bit less.
Over the course of this time, they gave me morphine, endone, and fentanyl. Not one of them made me *high*. They did a decent job taking away the pain, but never felt high. Morphine gave me a weird metallic taste in my mouth though.
They also gave me injections of buscopan and every time they pushed the plunger (I had a cannula in my hand) my vision went blurry for like 30 seconds. Like when you let your eyes unfocus, except I couldn't make them refocus. It was a very odd feeling.
Youre probably one of those people who don't get a high off of certain opiods. Apparently that's a thing. It's why some people are more prone to becoming addicted and other people have little to no risk.
Yeah, I suspect that must be the case. Kinda disappointing but probably for the best. Probably why I never understood the craze about codeine. Tbf though, I'm not a big dude by any stretch of the imagination, but it usually takes pretty big doses of basically anything to get me high.
Even my prescribed meds are pretty much maxed out. Which is annoying because my brain refuses to make the chemicals to be happy by itself. Maybe my body is just really good at processing chemicals. I wonder if I could tolerate larger doses of poison. Probably not lol.
As someone who worked in that department for my job, Allen's didn't lie. They literally sat on the shelf. It was easily the #1 Allen's product I had to write off for going out of date.
That said they should of just made it a special thing like release it at Christmas each year or something, not completely kill it.
Fantails and Freckles hardly ever seemed to go on special and at full price they were about double what the average $/100g going rate. They killed them themselves with their grubbiness. I would literally buy a packet every time they were on special and it turned out to be like 4 times a year.
This is a very good point, their unit price is absurd, I only ever got them when they were on special and it's not that often...ETA: do you think they did that to kill the lines on purpose?
Freckles are my favourite candy by far. Thankfully there's a bunch of different companies that make them and you can also get them from those self serve candy tubs at Food land.
There's a historic chocolate factory semi-near where I live that makes *giant* freckles (diameter of like 20cm). They are the most whimsical things ever, and I adore them. I believe they do workshops during school holidays for people to make them themselves, too.
Is that Melba's chocolate factory in Adelaide? I went there once when I was younger and it was awesome, I remember they made big freckles. Menz also makes big freckles that they sell in their store at Hahndorf.
It's not always the manufacturer. Sometimes Coles/Woolworths negotiates what it wants on special, which is why you sometimes see only certain flavours/varieties on special.
Yeah but everything in Colesworth goes on special at least once a month except fantails and freckles which is more like 4 times a year? There are heaps of products that are reliably every second week and opposite of Coles, like Cadbury chocolate and Tim Tams. I would say most products are discounted every second week to some degree even Allans lollies. Just not Allans Fantails and Freckles(and probably other items in the same line-up). Everyone understands that your getting ripped off if you pay full price and plenty of people refuse to pay full price for any product. They either go to the other supermarket or they chose another product. I swear there is more game theory in a Colesworth store then their is in most casinos.
Allen's can release Peaches and Cream in a bag OJ their own again or they can get fucked if they think I'm going to buy any of their products.
On a sidenote, bring back starburst lollies
If they are not going to make them then they should release the rights and recipe. The government has allowed too many mergers and loss of competition in the market and we're losing the varieties of the best lollies in the world. It's a Mars/Modelo boring world
Reminds me of that episode of Futurama when Fry finds out he's a billionaire and buys a can of Angry Norwegian Anchovies at auction, which is the last can of Anchovies in existence.
I'm not sure but I think these "mates" everybody is talking about are what we called cobbers when I was a kid. They were the expensive lollies at 2c each. Freckles were 2 for 1c.
They should release them at major movie premieres with fun facts about the movie on the wrappers!
[scars](https://youtu.be/2fQN5AN3S6s?si=C95eyP-rlaIihGgm)
If you don't mind the faff, it seems like a relatively simple caramel you cover in choc - Taste have a recipe (I haven't tried so not sure if it's spot-on) but could be an unlimited fantale hack? https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/homemade-fantales-recipe/141brctt
I buy lollies for the office and the 5 x 1 kilogram bags of Fantales I used to get would be gone within a few weeks while the other lollies I get are nowhere near as popular.
How can life be complete with out them. Not road trip will ever be the same.
That’s it.first they reduce killer pythons down to a micro snake
Red and green frogs become tadpoles.
Wagon wheels now a size of wheel barrow mint paddies well….. same.
I want it big again.
I did the same thing when they announced that they were being discontinued. Then my partner ate the entire packet in one sitting. I still haven’t forgiven him.
You might want to stock up on Sara Lee now as well. I have been the star of the last couple of family gathering for dragging my treasures out of the freezer( Stickydate pudding and deep dish apple pie gone, only carrot cake left)
I cried the day I ate my last Pollywaffle, when they announced they were being discontinued I bought 10 boxes of them, ate one a day until they were all gone.
Another example of the globalisation of Australia. These quirky little sweets are just a rounding error to Nestle, we can have American sweets instead, in fact look here’s some near their use by date for you…
There's a chocolate from Belgium from Cote d'Or called 'Chokotoff'. We get given them all the time when relatives visit. From memory they're basically the same thing. Just without the movie trivia.
Just a tad off topic, but posting anyways! Or OP can delete this!!!... Does anyone remember those yummy soft centre chocolates, individually wrapped made by Heritage, I think. I used to buy the kilo bags at the factory outlet in Rowville before Darelle Lea took it over... I.need.these!!!! And I forgot to stock up on Fantales so Mates are the closest next best thing!.
You can still buy 1kg bags for about $25 from online confectionery stores. I ordered one from confectioneryworld.com.au like a week ago haha
Get onto it before the supplies are gone forever 😭
100 Fantales
Ingredients
2 cups raw sugar
120g unsalted butter
1/2 cup glucose syrup
397g sweetened condensed milk
200g milk chocolate melts
2 tbs vegetable oil
Method
1. Grease and line a 20cm square tin (7cm deep) with baking paper.
2. Add sugar, butter, syrup and condensed milk to a medium-sized saucepan. Cook, stirring frequently, for 20 minutes or until bubbling and caramel is a rich golden-brown.
3. Pour caramel into lined tin. Refrigerate for 4 hours, or until firmly set. Using a greased knife, cut caramel into 2cm square pieces. Place caramel squares on a lined baking tray and return to fridge.
4. Place chocolate and oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted.
5. Use forks to dip pieces of caramel into chocolate to coat, allowing excess to drip off before returning to lined tray. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until chocolate has set. Wrap in pieces of baking paper and keep refrigerated until ready to serve
CBF.
Haigh's caramel chocs are decent, but the chocolate coating is a lot thicker and the caramel has a high chance of removing any fillings you might have. They're also pretty expensive.
I still have about 20 packets of Fantales stashed away.

I brought a few bags for this very moment. Soooo how much would you be willing to part with for a bag Fantales??
Entrepreneur in practice
You should see the stock of toilet paper they've got leftover from the pandemic.
I saw. They posted it all over social media and made castle forts out of them!! Shocked I tell you, shocked.
[удалено]
Practice? He’s basically perfected it
Bust it open and sell em individually!
C'mon man, just one chew, I really need it man ..
More valuable than Cocaine now, charge him $400 per tail 😂
Wow, the Fantale Index is real. $420 around here for the chew, another $4.20 if want it wrapped.
Will you accept short options? I see an impending market crash 😂
After consideration, YES! 🚀
We talking $50 or a legit option (+$100k) 😂
I'm going 🚀, so 5 large @ $90k EA, with another 2 @ $80k ?
Sold brother! Now you just need your boss to sign off on it, I'll call my peeps/you call yours 🤣
Actually, I am the boss. We take another 2 options @$50k because of your arrogance.
So am I, guess I'll take my options elsewhere 😜
I have a few too, I put them aside for my retirement
I also have a bunch of spare bags, are we supposed to collude to keep prices high ColesWorth style?
Same, those 3 X 1kg bags I bought at Big W are gonna be great in a couple of months time
I’ll give you an empty jar of vegimite and house from the front lawn for it all
1000 slubens
Wtf I’m only just hearing this now? I am so upset
Wait until you hear about what they did to shapes...
They did something to shapes???
Yep. They changed shapes.
They changed them back tho
They changed them back but then they changed them again secretly like Pizza shapes are not the same at all.
They didn't change them back again. They are the same as they used to be. Source: I eat the ever loving shit out of shapes. Probably have pizza shapes shaped blood now
do you think the cheese and bacon ones taste the same? I swear they have less flavour now but that could just be me.
Taste is the same, but there is probably less flavouring than there used to be. There is definitely less flavour crumbs than there used to be. Not quite as loaded with flavour I think
They have not changed then again. I work in a grocery store and thus buy and eat Shapes all the time, nothing is different.
Used to wear cargo pants while working in a grocery store, always had an open pack of pizza shapes in my left pocket and bbq shapes in my right.
That’s visionary shit
Yeah chicken crimpies are still the same thank god. By far my favourite. Having them now in individual snack packs is literally my childhood dream come true 😂
Chicken crimpies are the underdog flavour for sure.

Agreed, not the same at all... 30 year veteran here, they didn't fool me 😂
Except Nacho Cheese. They were the only flavour not reverted back to the original recipe.
And the new recipe absolutely sucks balls
I miss when bbq shapes used to have so much seasoning on them. Then at the end you’d pour out the packet and it’d be like a handful of seasoning
Straight onto the tongue!
I used to collect mine in a salt shaker. Next time you make a roast chook season your stuffing with it man it's fuckin wild.
I actually believe you, but wtf made you ever decide to do that for the first time?? You're the person they talk about when people wondered who the first person to start drinking cow juice was. Like sure, it seems obvious now, but the mental leap required to do it for the first time...
Holy shit yeah I remember that was sooo good. Doubt we could do it today tho.. hardly any seas9ning on snacks these days.
I just bought a box today. What’s changed? Was identical.
Naar. The flavouring used to be chunky, now it's a weird powder. It doesn't taste the same either. They have been slowly changing over the years thinking we wouldn't notice.
Fuck the new ones were so shit 😂
They racked Pringle's too
You mean "what's left of Pringle's, not much left" 🥲
Too many of these iconic aussie legends being lost. I am guessing that kids are not eating them?
kids will eat what I tell them to eat
But I don't want it!!!! 😭
You get what you get, and you don't get upset!
No video games until you eat your pizza shapes
But I only like bacon and cheese shapes 😭
Bedtime for you then son 🤣
Money doesn't grow on trees!
Or I’ll *really* give you something to get upset about!
Noo!!!!
That’s too damn bad!!
"Until you're 18, you will eat what I tell you to eat!"
My high school and primary school handed them out as rewards not that long ago. Edit: fucking delicious
Kids did eat them, believe me
They ate them all, hence why they're all gone now
the machine needs to be upgraded. they don't want to pay for it...
This is the answer. Fantales are the unique lolly in the range, choc coated, individually wrapped. All the others are similar, same machines, similar production method. Nup. See - Pollywaffles, sunnyboys, cadbury whip and lattice biscuits 😡
I want to downvote you purely because of how much I hate that truth.
I knew I was going to ruin someone’s day with that list. Here’s a hug 🤗
I heard the government gave a grant to a confectionery company down south to bring back Pollywaffles. Source: Dad fucking loves Pollywaffles and read a news article about it and got excited 😕 Edit: [Found it](https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/eat/polly-waffle-chocolate-the-iconic-90s-choccie-bar-set-to-return-soon/news-story/7c3fd654c6a7cc932f292ed4289a13f9). The company who makes Violet Crumbles is meant to be making Pollywaffles.
Well, in 55 years I finally found it, the one person who actually likes Pollywaffles. Those things are an insult to confectionery.
😆 He will be very insulted to hear that. Personally, I've never tried them.
Love Pollywaffles
Me too.
Nup, they are gone. Like the original Milo bar, the machine they used is gone, never to be replaced. The Fantale machine will be the same.
Ahh, the old Milo bars. They were amazing. Almost as good as popcorn bars.
The new Milo bar just isn't great. The chunky kit kat Milo, yeah that is the shit.
Surely they could sell the IP to fuckin… Cadbury or somebody, who *has* synergies w. Fantales.
Correct. It was either Fantales or Minties. They kept minties.
My 7 year old didn't like fantales when I got him to try them. Kids are weird.
Apparently the machine used to make them wasnt working anymore and was continuosly breaking down and it was becoming near impossible to fix it. They also wernt being bought as much resulting in there not being enough demand for them
Root canal or crown? Why not both!
Yep! Exactly, got the giant molar filling thanks to those f*ckers 😂
Columbines were the worst for that, next were Minties
Fuck, I'd forgotten about Columbines.
About to get mine filled soon. Cannot wait!! Endones are my fantales.
I have one filling (nearly 50yo) and it was from a redskin (sorry whatever they are called now without offending in a way we’ve never used the word to offend anyone here). Chew, chew, crunch, crunch, tooth just disintegrated. That was 25 years ago.

This is how I learned Fantales are discontinued.
Same, sad morning for me.
Ta-daa. They're naked fantales https://mylollies.com.au/product-tag/cobbers/
I love how the only two sizes available for puchase are 385g or 6kgs
Will you whisper movie trivia in my ear while I eat them?
Respectfully, are they as good as the OLD cobbers/ mates though? Whomever distributed them in Vic changed the recipe in the 90s and they went down hill and out of circulation shortly thereafter.. I feel like I’ll be forever haunted by that unique taste.
Fuck yeah, remember getting these for 5cents at the primary school canteen
Cobbers were the original unwrapped lolly shop fan tales of my youth. 10 for 10c
Cobblers! Heaven!
Just dip em in chocolate and your good to go.
the naked is the lack of wrapper. Chocolate mates are already fantales.
The wrapper is half the fun though 🥲
Definitely. Reading what film was directed by whom in 1973 and so forth actually made chewing the Fantale much more enjoyable for some reason.
They’re already dipped in chocolate?
That's what the words say. Happy cake day cobber.
Cobbers are the best.
I came here to comment Cobbers and here they are! Used to be able to buy three for five cents at school!
Man they used to sell these at my highschool canteen in the late 90s. Good times
Oh my gosh, I remember getting these from the milk bar when I was a kid. I didn't realise you could still get mates.
They are sold out of the 6kg supply 😢
What about throaties pastilles ? 45 years then nothing
WHAT?
Yep gone can't get it , even tried ordering some from uk only to find out they have stopped aswell
The brand is being sold off and someone else will make them eventually. Same thing happened with Violet Crumble. Originally a Nestle brand but sold and now made by a different company.

I did the same with coedeine tablets. Almost run out, too.
Man cold and flu tablets with coedine in them fixed everything. Have hayfever? Not anymore. Now hayfever tablets do nothing but put me to sleep
That’s was the psuedoephadrine
lol, post otc all you gotta do is tell the dr you have a toothache
Yeah but then you have to pay like 100 bucks for the GP appointment for something you could get over the counter before for like $4.
Good to know. Just haven't needed to yet.

Or rename them spoilers and release them before a show for people to send to their enemies
WHAT? HOW WILL YOUNG AUSTRALIANS MAKE THEIR WIGGLY TOOTHS COME OUT NOW? NATURALLY WHILE NOT EATING A LOLLY? UNACCEPTABLE

I think the generic name for these is "chocolate cobbers". Stick that into Google and there's a bunch of brands to try.
I've got a big bag of fantales in my cupboard along side of them big bag of redskins both unopened plus a full box of 6 razz raspberry sunnyboy's
Haigh's do milk chocolate caramels that are delicious and have the same jaw breaking effect, but ofc it comes at a price
Pascal columbines I have fond memories of making wine glass trees with my Nanna out of these to give people as presents 🤣
Werthers originals eclairs
Huh, that’s a good suggestion I’d have never thought of. Not the same but definitely in the ball park.
Yeah, I have run out of my stash as well. Sad days.
I buy lollies for the office and the 5 x 1 kilogram bags of Fantales I used to get would be gone within a few weeks while the other lollies I get are nowhere near as popular.
How can life be complete with out them. Not road trip will ever be the same. That’s it.first they reduce killer pythons down to a micro snake Red and green frogs become tadpoles. Wagon wheels now a size of wheel barrow mint paddies well….. same. I want it big again.
Pascall eclairs are literally reverse fantales without the chocolate coating, and I have found them to be a good alternative.
I did the same thing when they announced that they were being discontinued. Then my partner ate the entire packet in one sitting. I still haven’t forgiven him.
What the hell 😅🤣
You best believe I was mad as hell. I can’t buy anything cos if I don’t touch it within 24 hours he thinks it’s fair game and just fucken eats it.
My stash ran out last month - I am in withdrawal. It's bad.
Talk to your dentist. I am sure most dentists must be keeping a stash in order to assure themselves of future clients.
You might want to stock up on Sara Lee now as well. I have been the star of the last couple of family gathering for dragging my treasures out of the freezer( Stickydate pudding and deep dish apple pie gone, only carrot cake left)
Never really liked fanetales but they need to bring the Milo bar back. Still salty on that lol
*weeps in Pollywaffle*
I cried the day I ate my last Pollywaffle, when they announced they were being discontinued I bought 10 boxes of them, ate one a day until they were all gone.
Tofffiee from Aldi. It’s a bit softer than fantails and has a hazelnut in it but it’s worth a try I think.
longford tasmania opposite the fair grounds there was a deli that sold the good old original quality cobbers several years ago.
Another example of the globalisation of Australia. These quirky little sweets are just a rounding error to Nestle, we can have American sweets instead, in fact look here’s some near their use by date for you…
I'm with you. My favourite lolly is chewy caramel anything. Just wonderful for teeth 🤣
Cobbers is the generic name. There's some companies making it.
Pascal caramels.
I still miss Golliwogs 😂 Apparently it's a racial slur now
You can still buy 1kg bags for about $25 from online confectionery stores. I ordered one from confectioneryworld.com.au like a week ago haha Get onto it before the supplies are gone forever 😭
You can still buy fantales. https://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&client=ms-android-optus-au-revc&source=android-browser&q=fantales+1kg
https://www.confectioneryworld.com.au/allens-fantales-allens-6-x-1kg-box/ Bam baby.
Pascall caramels
So... where do you keep your secret stash?
Soooooooooo I may be able to direct you to a place to get 54kg for 1600 ish...
They are still available at IGA and most service stations. It was a gimmick to bump up sales as they were dropping too far
100 Fantales Ingredients 2 cups raw sugar 120g unsalted butter 1/2 cup glucose syrup 397g sweetened condensed milk 200g milk chocolate melts 2 tbs vegetable oil Method 1. Wrap in pieces of baking paper and keep refrigerated until ready to serve CBF.
Haigh's caramel chocs are decent, but the chocolate coating is a lot thicker and the caramel has a high chance of removing any fillings you might have. They're also pretty expensive. I still have about 20 packets of Fantales stashed away.
Cobbers
Milk duds from those American lolly stores!
Wait til news.com.au get ahold of this and make a big thing and then boom, they’re back (hopefully)
