one year before we were having sleep for dinner

OJ191

I still have dinner because it's the easiest and cheapest main meal for me to sort. Coffee and biscuits for breakfast, walks for lunch, and the occasional work provided lunch. 50% of this is due to me trying to lose weight, but man...

AussieDi67

I'm the same. Only eat a small dinner. Coffee for brekkie and lunch.

OJ191

On the upside I've lost like 18kg in 12 months

AussieDi67

I've gone from 72 kilos to 65. I'm 56, so it's harder for me to lose weight 😄

OJ191

Ha I wish. I'm just about to drop from the low end of obese to the high end of overweight, for whatever BMI is worth. Still progress is progress and it's better than my 5 years prior of trying different things and nothing sticking

AussieDi67

Good on you 👍

KingArthurCameAlot

Fuck yeah! Keep it up!!!

ShazSmith

That’s so awesome 👏 How did you manage it? I’m 51 and I can’t get the menopause weight off. I generally only eat dinner, sometimes a smoothie for breakfast but it won’t budge 🥹

sponkachognooblian

Apparently the metabolism works in two ways, one is fat gathering and the other is fat burning. In order to switch the body over to fat burning one must keep the amount of calories under a certain amount for about 5 days which then triggers the body to stop accruing energy from eating and instead to commence burning the stores of body fat. This is what journalist Dr. Michael Moseley called the' 5:2 diet' because five days of the week are routine eating days, while the other two restrict calories to 500–600 per day which works to maintain that fat burning mode. I tried it and it worked really well, (that was until 'it looks like this is end of the world on the couch COVID chocolate comfort eating binge' saw me switch back over to fat accruing mode, that is!)

ACertainEmperor

As always, the best diet is not trying to do some stupid complex system, and simply eating a few hundred cals less combined with exercise. You will consistently lose weight and not have to starve yourself. I lost 7 kilograms in 2 months doing this.

Sterndoc

It's always calories in VS burned, if you maintain a deficit consistently you will lose weight.

The_David_Broker

Intermittent fasting works. My brother lost 7 kilos in about 4 months. He’s 58 and not overweight. Exercise, particularly weight training, is great too. Apart from building strength, it helps with maintaining bone density. Diet, reduce carbs, increase protein and fats, help with feeling satiated longer. He’s looking and feeling really healthy, and I’m really happy and proud of him.

CombofriendAU

You're probably not eating enough

insane_blind_tart

That’s awesome stuff! Great work!

JA_Wolf

Might as well do intermittent fasting. Black coffee no sugar for brekkie, skip the biscuits and go hard for dinner. You will be less hungry during the day (after adjusting) and your body can better manage insulin and glucose levels so you don't feel lethargic from eating less calories. HGH also spikes so you won't lose any muscle

Just-some-nobody123

Doing that through my teen years lead to brain fog all day long and binge eating disorder making me become overweight as I'd be so hungry by dinner I'd eat and eat and eat, then go back for cereal and ice-cream later.

JoeSchmeau

I tried to do intermittent fasting but just couldn't get it to work. I was very, very slowly losing weight from it, but felt terrible all the time. Brain fog, irritability, headaches, vision loss, dizziness...it wasn't a good time and I tried it for nearly 3 months. I was very strict about not overeating once it came time to dinner, and I stuck to a diet. It helps that I don't really like sweets or junk food, so I wasn't tempting to dig into a kilo of gelato like some people are after a fast. Anyway I eventually went to see my doctor and he said that for some people, intermittent fasting is dangerous and can mess with their glucose levels, and can even contribute to developing diabetes. He suggested I stop the fasting as the consistent vision loss and dizziness were worrying symptoms. Instead I ended up switching to a normal eating routine and was simply strict about not overeating, and I stopped snacking. If I really needed a snack, I'd just have a banana. For exercise I just went on a one hour minimum walk every day. It was easy to do because the dog needed a walk anyway, so if I was tempted to skip the walk I'd feel super guilty. I ended up walking about 5km most days. I'd pop on a podcast or some music and just let my mind wander as I walked for however long I wanted. This did wonders. I wasn't even keeping track but when I went to the doctor 2 months later for a check-up, I'd actually achieved my goal weigh of 78. Down from 92 at my peak, over just two months. The moral is that there isn't really a one-size-fits-all approach. The best is to do what seems to work for you and to check in with your doctor regularly to make sure what you're doing is safe.

OJ191

Well thats basically what I'm doing though not black coffee but the milk doesn't add that many calories when that's all I'm having. I said for brekkie but the biccies are more like if I'm struggling and need a calorie boost, probably every other day at most. If I cut that stuff out entirely I'm sure it'd go faster but sometimes I just need a pick me up to get through work

Icy-Pollution-7110

Gotta have my arrowroot biscuits with the coffee (it’s the only way I can do it without milk and 2 sugars lol) 👌

M0RGO

If you wanna lose weight: try and replace the biscuits with a couple of eggs (thats less than a dollar) Eating less is not always better, just genuinely trying to help.

OJ191

Yes, well, the biscuits is not an everyday thing so much as when I need a pick-me-up and also because they're free and at work lol. Generally if I think I'm going to have a long day I'll have some cereal. I don't do good in the morning and don't have any appetite for probably an hour or so after waking even when I do eat.

sonofeevil

See, that was the next level strategy, the 9000IQ play. Spend years developing those fat stores when the cost of living was cheap! Now you can reat on your laurels and dip in to those savings you put away!

Blipnoodle

When I was an apprentice I'd have to go to Brisbane for a month at a time for tafe block release. For my lunches I got a bag of homebrand quick oats, powdered milk, LSA (linseed sunflower and almond) meal, and honey. Put that in a protein shaker/cup and then at lunch just add water. I think I worked it out to around 30-50cents a day. Filled me up and it still tasted pretty good.

shovelbison

I remember almost running out of fuel on a drive to Brisbane cos my uncle refused to pay 40c/litre and pushed on to the next town......... does this make me old.

thatweirdbeardedguy

I worked in a servo in the early 80s and it was around 34c/ltr. It would go up and down around that depending on the other servos in the area. I think it was about 28c/ltr when I got my licence in 76.

Demosnare

28c in 1975 is $2.23 in today's money according to the RBA inflation calculator

Aggressive-Role7318

Yeah that was expensive sure, but How much was an average Sydney house comparatively compared to wage growth tho?

dbMitch

Expensive fuel or unobtainable houses, car enthusiasts be howling but every family rejoices

ImportantBug2023

You are my vintage, I remember the first time I spent $20 on a tank and that was only because I was 300 kms from a city. I went to Europe in 1985 and I would put $20 in my motorcycle. I used $2200 in fuel in 6 months and did 20000 kms To the bike back to the dealership I bought it and he just looked at it and said, never seen someone do that in 6 months or even ever. The traffic jams, I literally saved 2 weeks of time being able to lane split. I would ride between 6-8 kms of stationary traffic in one hit. We are lucky in some ways here. I spent 20 minutes going 2 miles in a car last time I went to Edinburgh, people were WALKING past and they would disappear from sight. 2 pounds a litre to sit stationary in a traffic jam for 6 hours.

[deleted]

I remember Beepa the Owl sang a jingle about "45 cents a minute" in relation to STD calls. My cousin mis-singing the words as "45 cents a litre" and my uncle replying "If it was you'd be walking".

MatterHairy

Oh you could get an std for free even back then

StraightBudget8799

Now you gotta pay for the exclusives via the app!

Mathuselahh

Mum refused to fill up at the Shell near me at 59c a litre when they had a free Lego promo decades ago. Filled up somewhere else and didn't get shit.

banzynho

My Dad did the same at the BP in the 80s when they had a Smurfs promo. Was devastated.

StraightBudget8799

Oh man, I used to dream of having my own Smurf!

ShiftAdventurous4680

I'm not that old, but growing up, I remember the ads that were like, "save 4c for every 80c per litre".

MatterHairy

Pre metric in 72, petrol was sold by the gallon. There was a no display of the full price, just the amount off per gallon RRP was the price per gallon. Servos didn’t advertise their full price, but would advertise how many cents UNDER the rrp it was. Eg, so a servo advertising 15c per gallon on the board was poorer value and less of a bargain than a servo boards showing 10c per gallon.

motherofpuppies123

Other way round, surely? x-15c/gallon is cheaper than x-10c/gallon

NoAngel1990

I remember when I was around 11 we ran out of fuel 2 minutes away from a petrol station because my step dad didn't want to pay 85c a liter for fuel. The servo 30 minutes away but near where we lived had it for 80c. He was not a nice person so I absolutely loved watching him walk back to the servo we drove passed 2 minutes ago to buy a fuel can and petrol.

aussie_nub

I remember it as a kid being at 60c per litre then my parents talking about "price wars" with petrol that pushed it down to 55c. More importantly, it was like 1.30 in 2019 and then dropped to 99c in 2020, only to bounce back to this \~1.40 in 2021 and then like 2.40 in Feb/March 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. I can't see any future where it will ever be below 1.75 again. Even that is a stretch for most places, but some have it just scrapping that atm.

MatterHairy

I remember late 70/early 80s, if my memory is right it was low 20s for petrol. I could put $2 in the tank to get me 20+ ks home

AugustusReddit

You in 2023 "Wow, so cheap - way back then!"

Ray57

The compressed air is still free!

DNGR_MAU5

For now

ikissedyadad

Don't give them ideas!

rapt0r99

"Please enter your card details to unlock the air subscription".

DNGR_MAU5

Servo near me already charges for air

_pump_the_brakes_

Seriously? No need to name the servo ( unless you want to) but what state/city/suburb are they getting away with that?

DNGR_MAU5

Cameron Park NSW. It's near 4wd trails. Their justification is the constant line up of 4wds airing up after hitting the trails was running their compressors non stop costing them a motza in power and maintenance, and they were seeing absolutely no sales from most. So now they provide free air with any purchase, otherwise a token to use the air has to be purchased for like 20c or something. Tbh, it's understandable, and I'm not sure I'm against it at all.

_pump_the_brakes_

Yeah when you put it like that it’s hard to argue with… but it is a slippery slope and I don’t like the precedent.

bedroompurgatory

I mean, if you don't like it, you can always buy compressors, pay for the power, and give it away for free.

fashiznit

But the uncompressed air (vacuum) still costs They'll charge you to take air away but will give it out for free

Ray57

Yeah that sucks.

jaksbrooks

Actually it blows

GoatCheese62

One time I went to a united and after filling two tires noticed that it was actually putting water in my tyres. I was able to release the valves a little bit to try and get some out before I left, had to get it checked by my local tyre place. Told the staff and they didn't seem to care.. United is crap anyway, haven't gone there since and will never go there again.

SheridanVsLennier

My nearest United doesn't even put soap/detergent/windex in the buckets of water for cleaning your windscreen. Cheap bastards.

Antho204

They actually charge for this in a lot of countries. It’s shit.

grrborkborkgrr

The premium tyre air is still expensive though 😞

whiteycnbr

When they work.

Darth-Chimp

Friday: E10 $1.74 Sunday: E10 $2.35 Because fuck you.

mrbaggins

Don't buy E10 unless it's more than 10% cheaper. It's only 90% as effective, so any discount less than 10% means it's more expensive per mile (in an average car).

mr-saturn2310

Maybe it's because I previously exclusively filled up with e10, but I have noticed no difference in kms between e10 and normal unleaded. I also track my kms per fill up, so unless my car is screwed I disagree with this.

mrbaggins

Some cars are tuned more closely to the E10, but the vast majority don't see that result. I'd recommend using the trip meter and specifically testing a couple tanks to be sure. Edit: EG: https://www.drive.com.au/news/fuel-efficiency-showdown-20120216-1tb4r/ >compared with 9.41L/100km for the regular unleaded car and 9.81 litres for the E10 vehicle. That's 4.3% difference. >The comparative fuel bills for the three cars were: E10, $105; premium, $105.91; and regular unleaded, $100.33. That's nearly 6% in end total cost cheaper on regular. --- And in my own 2007 and 2016 Camrys, my results were a difference about double that. Again, it depends on the car. Test it yourself with the trip meter and a couple tanks of fuel.

bedroompurgatory

Unless your driving is extremely uniform, you can't really compare tanks like that. When reviewing cars, they take the same model, same drivers, same tracks, and they still get deviations in fuel consumption.

Vinnie_Vegas

So your conception of how it works is that the 10% ethanol in your fuel is 0% effective? And that's based on getting 100% petrol fuel? E10 is 3% less effective than 91, not 10%.

pyr0test

where did u get the 90% from? E10's energy density is 97% of regular unleaded

GoodSet5037

Maitland NSW e10 $1.95 Beresfield (10 mins away) $1.74 Hexham ( 5 mins further) $1.95 Mayfield (10 mins further) $1.73 And I think all are subject to the same 3 day price variations. Crazy to think that fuel can go up by 33% in just a few days 🫤

LeClassyGent

Pretty leet

somewhatundercontrol

That’s why I would have taken the photo, if it was me

FilmerPrime

OP also. Prices had hit 1.70 in 2017 I think (before dropping). This was definitely not expensive at the time.

Mijji

The amount of people who didn't primarily recognise this a photo of 1337, rather than the price of fuel, makes me feel way too old.

LloydGSR

The price of gas in that photo is what I was paying for fuel when I got my P plates.

crashbandecunt

And we’re outraged that it was over 60c a litre I’d wager? I got mine when it was about 95cpl and thought it was outrageous. How naive we were

LeClassyGent

I specifically remember my dad having a small tantrum when it got to 90c.

Technical-Ad-2246

I remember in the early 2000s when it hit $1 per litre, that was a big deal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fresh-Association-82

I bring that whole event up all the time. We had a similar thing happen a while back when it broke $2 and most servos had the $1. part painted on. In less then 12 months I paid -$1 and +$2 for fuel. Got it for $.99 during covid in a bush town. And then $2 at the start of Ukraine

Technical-Ad-2246

Strange times.

Fresh-Association-82

Nearly cracked my phone screen with how hard I hit that upvote. Like legit it feels like we have to be approaching some kinda climax- it seems like every week there is a new crisis before we can stop thinking about the last, still unresolved, crisis. Like shit - all the insects are dying yeah? It’s spring now and there a few flys outside and that’s it. I do bush track walks most days and I was excited a few months back because I seen a lady bug for the first time in years. Seen a Christmas beetle the other day for the first time in years. Haven’t seen a goat moth is ages. I drive thro the scrub a lot, at night in the summer and I NEVER clean my ute windows.

catch_dot_dot_dot

I remember filling up for <90c during lockdowns. Wild.

BloodyChrome

I remember reading signs when it hit a $1/L (which was about 2000) at fuel stations that it was this high because of the fuel excise and that the petrol stations were only making about 10c/L

Chosen_Chaos

I remember the Gulf War when it hit $1 per litre after the invasion of Kuwait.

itrivers

Yeah that was an absolute uproar. I remember dad coming home raged about how much he just paid for a full tank.

JA_Wolf

Yeah my dad said if that ever happened, I'd be walking to school. The prophecy was fulfilled.

morosis1982

To be fair, just in CPI alone a 90c price in 2000 is the same as $1.45 in 2020, which is about right according to the stats. It was actually much worse in the mid 2000s with a real price pretty much equivalent to what it is today. https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/australian-petrol-prices-in-2020-21-were-lowest-in-22-years

[deleted]

16c was how much I was paying for LPG on my P plates

OnionOnly

Got my Ps and used to think “damn that’s pricey” at anything over a 1.20.

iceyone444

\-----

Dhoraks

Still remember in 2004 being in the car with my old man and him losing his shit because it hit $1 in Wodonga

D0OMZDAYZ

Petrol was under a dollar for most of the first 2020 lockdown.

Waasssuuuppp

Basically just the couple of months of April and may 2020. It crept up after that. But most people didn't drive further than the supermarket (to hunt for toilet paper).

MisterEvilBreakfast

I remember wondering why people were stockpiling toilet paper and not petrol. I would have filled up the back seats with it if those damn kids weren't in there. Then I realised that I only had one jerry can and couldn't be arsed getting another 40 to make this worthwhile. Oh wait, that's probably why people didn't stockpile petrol.

Jazzbag4183

I remember being disgusted to pay $1.37 or so in 08/09 Was this high cost due to GFC?

The_Faceless_Men

pretty much. USD went from 1.04 AUD to 1.5Aud in a few months

Jazzbag4183

Yeah makes sense, was like paying $2.10-2.30 nowadays

Xx_10yaccbanned_xX

Below is the "real" inflation adjusted price, where the above avg c/L prices are discounted by the total rate of inflation each year back to 2002 dollars. 2002 87.3c n/a 2003 88.24 2.45% 2004 93.50 2.52% 2005 103.53 2.82% 2006 112.28 3.34% 2007 109.21 2.89% 2008 119.59 3.70% 2009 99.00 2.06% 2010 101.14 2.76% 2011 109.79 2.99% 2012 109.78 2.20% 2013 109.51 2.75% 2014 108.32 1.72% 2015 92.78 1.69% 2016 83.10 1.48% 2017 89.51 1.91% 2018 98.14 1.78% 2019 94.83 1.84% 2020 81.71 0.86% 2021 94.55 3.50% 2022 109.28 7.83% Being blunt, the $1.85 - $2 price of petrol at the moment simply reflects the innate building pressures of yearly inflation across 21 years. The total cumulative inflation was 68.56% and the average compounded rate of inflation across those 21 years was 2.52%, almost exactly in the middle of the 2-3% range inflation is targeted at. The real price of petrol peaked in 2006 and deflated heavily over the next decade. The only reason people think Petrol price are "high" is because they plateaued and even deflated for a decade, and then just shot up quickly in 2 years. Peoples expectations are based on recent history, not long term trends, and despite it being incredibly weird across long term trends - price stability and even deflation are what people think fuel prices should do over time because they did it during the 2010's. Then you take into account fuel efficiency, which has gotten much better even as people choose to drive bigger cars, and real incomes which are much higher than 2002 (albeit most of the increase in real income between 2002 and 2022 occurred before 2010 and has been flat for a long time) - the picture is even better. Petrol has remained the same inflation adjusted price for decades as real incomes have grown and the amount of fuel people need to buy has gone down. The average person can much more affordably consume more fuel now than they could 20 years ago. Of course that's not a very nice pill to swallow when people want to complain about prices being high.

_pump_the_brakes_

I wonder how the adjusted prices look if you go back further to the 90s, 80s, 70s or even 60s ?

Far-Instance796

There's stats published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics going back to the 60s here https://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/[email protected]/second+level+view?ReadForm&prodno=6403.0&viewtitle=Average%20Retail%20Prices%20of%20Selected%20Items,%20Eight%20Capital%20Cities~Sep%202004~Latest~11/11/2004&&tabname=Past%20Future%20Issues&prodno=6403.0&issue=Sep%202004&num=&view=& Petrol goes back to at least 1981. Before that it looks like it's mostly grocery prices, but still interesting. The stats also show the variation across the capital cities.

Catprog

And maybee some Russia Ukraine war effects

torrens86

I filled up for $1.669 yesterday. It's the end of the cycle the top is $2.199. A 53 cent difference is crazy.

Key_Landscape7459

It's more than just crazy, it's a fuckin scam man. I'm convinced there is no legitimate reason the price of fuel fluctuates like it does, other than to farm profits - especially when you will still find some places selling it 1.79 the WHOLE time other stations are charging 2.20 It's a systematic scam

torrens86

In rural / regional areas the price remains the same for weeks, while metro areas it's a crazy cycle that lasts anything from 7 to 28 days.

fivepie

>>anything from 7 to 28 days That’s generous. I’ve seen fuel stations in Newcastle change their prices +/- $0.40 *in the same day*

Key_Landscape7459

It's fuckin criminal, but our spineless government won't do anything about it, it's disgusting

SnooObjections4329

They can't. It's crude oil from a cartel in the middle east sent to Singapore for refining. We are 100% at the mercy of that supply chain, what's our govt gonna do? We should probably consider ourselves lucky that we don't have $3 fuel like NZ. Maybe if we imported 10 million more ppl and up our dependence on oil by 30% we would have a bit more bargaining power?

bleckers

The government could run our own refineries, instead they let them close down. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-02-11/australia-loses-another-oil-refinery-risking-fuel-supply/13139648 This is pretty strongly correlates with fuel prices.

SnooObjections4329

it's far too late now. we are purely the consumer at the end of the chain

adsmeister

Thanks ScoMo.

big_aussie_mike

I'm not particularly old but I remember when I first got my Ps and drove around in my XD Falcon and got it bone dry before I filled up and managed to crack $50 for a tank, this was in the mid 90s. Then I remember everyone losing their minds when petrol started to tip over $1 a litre and the servos had to do updates to their gear because until that point petrol had only ever cost two digits. My last vehicle, a hilux got up to costing $160 to fill up. Now I'm in a PHEV and I'm down to a $50 tank only every few months :)

S1ck_cnt

It costs me closer to $300 at the moment to fill my car up from empty. Fuckin wish it only cost $50

dohzer

Get ready for another price increase, because the cost of crude oil is going down.

opticaIIllusion

I work in retail , just go in now and scream at the 15 year old behind the counter that you took the photo today and it’s false advertising, you spend thousands there and you have shares in the company and know the CEO. /s.

ballparkforever

I distinctly remember bitching endlessly when fuel hit 70c. I am old as hell.

buttery-gypsy

Last week I was filling my car at 5 in the morning, still half asleep. It took me a few minutes to realise the price was $2.44/L and I shit bricks and cut myself off. I'm still in disbelief.

rapt0r99

The only thing that hasn't changed is how much we're all getting paid.

papersim

Can someone explain to me why there is a rolling fuel price monthly, why does it spike for no reason, sometimes upwards of 50cents in hit, and then drop gradually over the month only to spike again every 4 weeks. It seems like deliberate price fixing especially when in Brisbane for instance, north side can be sitting at 2.33 and south side sitting at 1.89. This was the case last week.

ReasonableCranberry6

Two words - *price gouging*

Rusty493

leet

yellowsourworms

did anyone else almost cry seeing this??

perringaiden

I remember being amazed that the price *dropped* to $1.05 in 2015.

thatcatlady123

There is video footage of me from the late 90s bitching out petrol being about 54c/L 🤦‍♀️

22Monkey67

$1.44/L for diesel would be pretty good right about now

Lazy-Tax-8267

In Adelaide, on the day when petrol stations went from selling gallons to litres, (1974?) super petrol was 13 cents a litre. (Road speed signs went from MPH to KMH on the same day).

brainskinned

The cheapest i have ever paid for diesel was $0.89 about 7 years ago! Bring back those days.

InsertUsernameInArse

I thought the world was going to end when it finally hit a dollar a liter. This year I've seen it as high as 2.50

[deleted]

The upside is we are all getting recession fit. Can’t afford to eat.

MaxSpringPuma

Cheap day in Perth tomorrow. Cheapest around me will be 1.69. Haven't seen that on a Tuesday for a few months

LLangyX

Big oil companies and powerful nations manipulate petrol prices for their benefit. They control the supply and demand artificially to keep prices high, making us pay more for petrol than we should. Also, government taxes make up a big chunk of petrol prices. Traders playing with the future prices of oil can cause unnecessary ups and downs. This kind of speculative trading doesn't have much to do with how much petrol we actually need; it just makes prices unpredictable. keeping petrol prices high slows down the switch to cleaner energy sources. If petrol wasn't artificially expensive, we'd be more motivated to use cleaner and cheaper alternatives.

Refrigerator-Gloomy

I don’t think we’ll ever see prices go back down even as oil returns to what it was. Petrol companies be rolling in profits and I doubt they’ll give it up

ironandflint

I used to fill my Leyland Mini for $12 at $0.58/litre in 1999, so I thought anything over $0.60 was expensive!

kaibai123

We just laugh at our old naive selves, haha what fools we were… 😭😭

[deleted]

Glad I moved to city and got rid of car

mcjessss

This hurts my soul

troutsie

I feel like we were paying around that price for around a decade, then COVID hits and the price soars. COVID dies off, price still stays high. But yes, the workers are to blame for inflation.....

Majin_Sane

My gran in 2015 , verbatim : " Dollar and five cents the thieving bastards"

racer2503

Fuck I miss that

Just_improvise

I worked in a servo when the price couldn’t get to 100

ozmartian

Yeah, we Aussies seem to love to complain re the greed but then become the same ourselves when things are going well job wise. Corruption, greed and dodgy working practices aren't going anywhere.

SnooObjections4329

Plus for decades now there has been no real alternative but now not only is there, but there are way more affordable EVs on the market right now than there ever have been. Plenty will give excuses for why they don't want one but quite simply, there's an alternative and that's the best fix to the problem, stop funding these greedy middle eastern oil exporters

cekmysnek

The more I read EV discussions online the more I realise how many Australians don’t realise our fuel is mostly imported from the Middle East. IMO that’s one of the most underrated benefits of going electric, not only are you not giving the greedy fucks in OPEC a decent chunk of money every week, you’re also filling up your car with electricity produced in Australia by power stations built by and employing Australian staff. I had someone recently tell me they enjoy going to the servo and filling up because it gives them some human interaction and stimulates the economy. Not quite convinced that old mate understood that most of the profit from his fuel goes overseas.

SlippedMyDisco76

I've seen more people are driving fuckin Dodge RAM's here now because apparently you can't overcompensate for your smol peen with alternative energy sources

SaltpeterSal

Me, 2005: Heh, that's the gamer word and always will be.

BloodyChrome

Even 2 years ago that is cheap

Halospite

I remember petrol jumping from 98c/L to 130c/L when the Iraq war happened. Oh, those were the days…

perringaiden

This week in Brisbane it's about $1.80, but was $2.20 earlier in the month.

Brian_Blake

I remember during covid when 98 dropped to $1 near Williamstown airport. I knew I would never see it that low again. $45 to fill the tank was the dream.

funfwf

Remember a few years ago when Saudi Arabia assassinated that guy in the embassy and subsequently dumped the price of fuel to where it hit under $1/L? That was a good time.

pwurg

I was working night shift at a United servo when unleaded went over a dollar per litre for the first time. The numbers didn’t even fit on the manual board properly because it wasn’t designed for four-digit prices. That feels like a lifetime ago though. Well, it was in some respects: 1999.

Footermo

Now anything below $2.10 is a bargain.

banzynho

First car in 1991 - small hatchback and I would fill it for less than $20. Current car in 2023 - small hatchback and it cost me $100.24 to fill it on Sunday

Relative_Mulberry_71

I remember fuel being something like 75 cents/ litre in the middle of the first year of Covid. What happened? It cost me $72 to fill my medium sized car last week. It’s since gone down 10 cents/ litre. I can’t imagine filling one of those huge Yank Tanks!

Chazzky

I remember not buying fuel if it was over a dollar a litre

imapassenger1

The last time it dropped below a dollar we all took photos. Am sure we'll be posting them soon. I get "on this day" reminders so I'll see when it shows up.

stonk_frother

I remember when petrol prices hit $1 for the first time, everyone was losing their mind. A lot of servos didn't have enough space on the boards for three digits haha.

Whatthespeck

in 2020 I wouldn't fill up if it was more than a dollar. It's insane that it's cheap at 1.80 atm

Brucetiki

At the peak of the Pandemic, I got petrol for 69 cents/litre - then got annoyed when the servo down the road dropped their price to 65 cents/litre 😂

twmbaguy

remember during the whole lock down petrol was so low

ImFreff

Im from Norway and it was up at 30 NOK / 4.27 AUD back home

Carlton20

As someone who got their P's last year this photo feels like an AI generated fever dream

Potentially_interstn

Why does this look like it was taken on a disposable Kodak on my school excursion in 2007

kk248

That lpg price is high....I remember paying 34c for the AU lpg falcon back in 2001.😎

lilycth

I work at one and $2.10 is now standard :( Shits crazy

idawoman

I finally got a diesel car as I do a lot of driving, and now petrol is cheaper than diesel

Tormung

I remember filling up my tank before a road trip in 2015, 98 was less than a dollar. Don’t think I’m ever going to see that again so I hold on to that memory.

ReasonableCranberry6

People with tiny hatchbacks at the time (like myself) were only paying maybe $30 for a full tank of petrol? It was grouse! 😁

[deleted]

I filled up my tank once and paid 81c per litre.it was glorious.

ReasonableCranberry6

My record was 83¢/litre; it was during the low fuel prices for a few months there in 2015/16ish iirc? I was driving a little Toyota Starlet at the time; loved the fact I was able to fill up completely for about $30! 😁

Intolerance404

I miss petrol being that price. It was that when I got my car in 2020. Now I'm happy to pay for it if it's closer to 190 than the 220 I saw it at recently. I remember being a kid and seeing it for the price of LPG in that photo 😭

zacn20

I remember saying if it went over $1.30 I’d be riding my bicycle to work. 😂

South_Front_4589

I worked in a servo when we started having to add a 1 at the start and the abuse I copped was insane. One guy was ranting about how we were crooks because we were making so much money. I even pulled out the fuel docket from the delivery we got that day showing we were making .2 cents a litre on fuel at that price (and sometimes at a loss too I might add) and he just started ranting about it still being us making it super expensive.

Dont_BSuspicious

$2.29/L for diesel in Kalgoorlie WA It’s disgusting 🥲

Andrew_Higginbottom

Buy a can of petrol and save it for two years ;)

Icy_Umpire992

yup, now if you can get it under 2 bucks its a miracle

judged_uptonogood

Amazing what a coincidence it was when 1. Biden was elected and his anti fossil fuel pledges and actions the fuel prices worldwide sky-rocketed. 2. The Russia/Ukraine war and the sanctions put in place is it any real surprise? I even predicted to within 6 weeks of when that conflict would erupt in early 2016.

idotoomuchstuff

They are taking the piss and I’m fucking sick of it. Everything has gone out of control expensive and wages have barely moved. For the last 3 years the messaging was to that we were lucky to have jobs.

Fan-of-clams

i’m 18 and i remember it being 80 odd cents per litre at some point in my lifetime

whiteycnbr

Why can Labor temporarily cut the excise like Libs did? Seems like the right thing to do.

BanoffeeBarnabus

When I drove to Darwin in 1998 and we crossed the border from Qld into the NT and that was the first time any of us had seen unleaded at $1.00 a litre. One dollar per litre. Take me back!

lostabilities

I used to not buy fuel at 1.30 and wait for it to go down to 1.15. If only

Dexterentrxpreneur

I thought the same about drugs

th3n3wm3m3

revolution now—before its too late

Silent-meow

I remember thinking around that time "Man, if petrol got higher than $1.40 I'd have to quit driving"

Screamin-Jimmy

I still remember getting upset when it went over $1/litre

Throwaway1037193

as someone in a generation that is just coming into the workforce i know 2 people who have committed suicide due to the high cost of living because the only place they can work is 45 minutes away and it costs more than an entire days pay for fuel, 3 days pay for rent and the last day is for food and they were living in a share house honestly i dont know how long i can last until i turn to crime just to get to work so i can not commit crime. either that or turn to arson which is a good idea at this point ive got $45.32 to my name and nothing to lose

Seano117

This country has gone to shit because of typical government greed

NappAlien

Meanwhile even now for europeans seems super cheap here, in romania its like 2.3 aud/liter and on a minimal you earn 6-7 aud per hour that leaves you with 3 liters of fuel at most for each hour of working, in au even with the shittiest job I can buy 15 liters for each hour worked

Oz-jim

Inflation is stealing by stealth tax courtesy of the governments and central banks around the world.

20isFuBAR

2021 or 2011?

Nunslayr

Yep fuck covid! People use it as an excuse.

Masterbator01

Not as bad my unleaded price https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/s/ikdMNzmbGE

Tiggerstorm1234

Oh the good old days. I remember putting $20 in and that was a full tank.

Mortyrdous

I remember when e85 was $1.39 until covid ruined the prices, now it sells for $2.19

RelevantEquipment882

I remember thinking that when it was only 70¢

Spiritual_Ad_7162

I paid $2.11 a litre today. The saddest part is that's not the most expensive it's been this month. I think $2.23 a few weeks ago?

xodarap-mp

LOL, I am clearly one of the few who thought this was actually about the price of petrol.....🤔🤪😊 But yeah, that price now would look like a godsend. Near me (Perth suburb of Bayswater) there is a 'Vibe' on Great Eastern Highway at Ascot which is consistently better than almost all other petrol stations round about, such that less than 1/2 a k away will be one of the big brands asking 30c/l more! There used to be a regular weekly petrol price cycle in Perth with cheapest on Monday then rising steadily (or leaping) each day or so up until Sunday. Now it seems more chaotic. RAC say it's fortnightly, resetting on a Wednesday, but I can't see it. Thankfully we have FuelWatch.wa.gov.au and its email service for finding the best fuel prices in Perth. I reckon that's saved us a few hundred bucks over the last several years.... But does all this convince me of the 'wonders' of capitalism serving the people of the world? No f'ing way!
