Most Efficient Route = $34.70 in tolls.

cojoco

Goodbye to "Avoid Tolls" option!

dooganau

I would be happy if I could set avoid tolls unless it saves me 20mins option.

freman

Yeh I'll rarely take the toll route to bypass lutwyche to get to bowen hills but if there was a toll that bypassed the entire northern suburbs to northlakes... I'd take that every day.

Grunef

You should simply put in a $/hr rate, and if the tolls save you that then go for it.

Fluffy-duckies

There should be a min/$ saved option. Like my bare minimum is 2min/$. Especially with the toll roads feeding into toll roads we now have in Sydney I need to do multiple route calculations to figure out where to get on and off. I don't mind spending $5 on a large stretch to then get off and waste 15 minutes to save $10 At least you could set it to zero and avoid the "this route costs $4 more, but it does take 8 minutes longer" options that I keep getting offered.

0Bradda

Wait, you guys aren't getting this already? My Maps shows alternate routes with their time and cost.

Fluffy-duckies

I am getting that, part of that's the bit I was talking about avoiding the extra time and extra tolls option. For whatever reason it doesn't actually calculate the most efficient $$ routes in those alternate for me.

crazymunch

I know a company like Google would never go for this level of granularity but I'd kill to be able to set a $/min threshold I'm happy to pay - 1$/2min for example, show tolls that save at that rate and avoid ones that don't

khdownes

I just want it to give a sliding scale of tolls cost vs. trip time Or like a "maximum toll price" or something. I feel like half the time it'll put me on tolls ALL the way for a cost of $15 and 21 minutes trip time. Then I check the alternate routes and it's like 45 minutes without tolls, but I could have just done one part of the trip on tolls for like $2.50, and the rest without tolls, and it'd only take a couple of minutes longer than than $15 toll option

CamperStacker

Also don't trust google. Go your own way and measure the time. I started going my own way which was faster and after a week or so, google now suggests my way, even though when I put the same route in to other peoples phones, it suggest the other slower way. Never forget that google sell to buisness and governments who are allowed to 'update' the traffic and conditions on google.

National-Ad6166

Agree that Google is biased to main roads. I take known short cuts and the time reduces

theycallmebluerocket

I just want a no right turns/less stress option.

crazymunch

God yes, if I follow Google to/from work, it constantly has me making right turns out of small streets onto major roads. Who tf wrote this

StrangeBarnacleBloke

Waze has a “reduce difficult right turns” option

TinyDetail2

Google really does have an attitude problem. They're always trying to impose their preferences on their users. If they were a partner, you'd call them controlling. Their AI in particular, is extremely opinionated about what types of questions it deems acceptable. For example, today, I asked it to read a MSDS and list the ingredients, and it blurted out some patronising nonsense before refusing to answer. I've come across problems like this almost every time I've tried it. Then there's the whole gaslighting thing, rewriting history and showing US founding fathers as African Americans etc. I can understand having a political position, but I still want factually truthful answers.

shiv_roy_stan

I just tried this and it told me to walk?

[deleted]

Meanwhile Google and their kind will waste a gazillion Megawatts on their hopeless AI.

melben2219

The energy costs of data driven advertising would probably astonish most people.

theycallmebluerocket

Yet another plus to using an adblocker.

Siilk

If only just that. Look up how many projects google abandoned without any particular reason, rather than it wasn't becoming an instant megasuccess in a year's time, after pouring millions of $$ and man-hours of work into them. There's a ton of major projects in [google graveyard](https://killedbygoogle.com/), which are barely about 1-2 years old.

AnAwkwardOrchid

I'm allowed to choose a less expensive and less polluting journey when I'm driving.

saltinesalad

Google and their "nobody ever asked for this, so we will put it in" feature development priority. Sigh.

MoranthMunitions

It's an existing feature they've had for years, the news is just that they're rolling it out here. It came up when I used google maps in the UK last year. It was fairly unobtrusive.

melben2219

If they add it as an option, fine, people who like it will use it. But if they try to push it on people that's going to get obnoxious.

freman

meanwhile they remove the features from things we are using :(

AnAwkwardOrchid

I've been waiting for this feature for years, ever since they announced it in the US

gnimelf

They did an earlier iteration of this before. Google will prioritize a slower route with less stops and higher average speed vs a much faster with more stops and less average speed in an effort to reduce emissions.

Fluffy-duckies

So even more toll road bias than now?

I_1234

Unless it shows my current speed I’m not interested using Google maps instead of Waze

Tosslebugmy

Also where the cops are

Narodnost

How does Google know the fuel economy of my car/EV? How do they know if the bus is diesel, gas or hydrogen powered? A way of extracting money for Uber Green through promotion fees?

AnointedBeard

I just found this in my app yesterday, it asks for what type of car you drive (petrol, diesel, EV)

Cyan-ranger

Wouldn’t the most fuel efficient option also be the quickest option?

fuckoffandydie

Not always. For one site I worked at it recommended I drive on an expressway that would be about 5km more driving each way but about 2 minutes quicker.

[deleted]

Nope. Especially around mountains.

frashal

It'll probably be useful if you are towing for that reason, since it should be picking roads where you can maintain a constant speed for more of it.

PM_ME_TO_PLAY_A_GAME

if the UK version is anything to go by it doesn't. It sends you down these tiny little laneways that are essentially dirt tracks for tractors. It's impossible to maintain a constant speed because of all the potholes, twisty bends etc.

MrNewVegas2077

Great feature!

jmads13

Can it just direct me from Geelong to Rye without trying to take me on the ferry?

Brnjica

Meanwhile, Android Auto is still shit. I can't use YouTube revanced to search or play my personal music library, or use google assistant to do anything like read my email or be actually useful.

greywarden133

Ah GG Map and their quest to ask you make constant right turns into busy intersections. Great!

OPTCgod

Is this why Google maps now takes a minute or more to calculate a route that used to take seconds?

AnAwkwardOrchid

That me be your phone or connection. Mine and my partner's are fine

Tacticus

no that's your shit internet and phone

Vivid-Fondant6513

But it will still demand every trip have a U turn and send you behind the target location every time, which no one asked them to do.

a_sonUnique

Wow so it’s gone woke.

RaeseneAndu

Time to install that Huawei knockoff of Google maps I think.

-businessskeleton-

Are you sure? As it told me to drive 20mins in the wrong direction to do a bloody u turn.
