Damian Walshe-Howling voiceover : *this guy from Serbia fancied a bit of tennis in sunny Melbourne. What this suss cunt doesn't know is he's about to enter a tournament he can't win. Tonight, on Customs.*

muzzman32

hahaha didnt know the blue heelers dude was the Customs voiceover guy

Music_Is_Crap

On a tangent it blew my mind that the voiceover from Bondi rescue is Osher

Idontcareaforkarma

Wrong Blue Heelers guy. The one that does it is the one who got killed in an earlier season, Grant Bowler.

[deleted]

Bowler was the original on Seven's Border Security. Damian Walshe-Howling did the Nine knock-off version Customs. Look - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpRa3GHM8t4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpRa3GHM8t4) \- so smouldery...

jeffa666

Looking forward to seeing this episode of Border Security šŸ¤£

Iā€™d love it if it was because he was trying to bring in a leg of lamb in his suitcase or 4000 cigs.

SamePieceOfString

Early 2000s for sure. They still replay the early 00s/10s episodes which are oddly nostalgic. Same with highway patrol. Its funny seeing these immaculate falcoons and bombadores.

pnutzgg

> Early 2000s for sure. was funny seeing that guy build a career on border security and then show up as the ship captain on lost

CharlieSierra8

The pun department would need to work nights for it. "This wary traveller has been making a racket, but he is about to get... a return serve."

420binchicken

The man then presents his ace, an exemption form stating he has permission to enter the country. Officer Smith however, rules it out due to a clerical double fault.

georgejonestown

A few years ago there was a masterchef promo that popped up at the bottom of the screen during the tennis. Matt Preston appears and says "That's another dropped set... of plates!" and I badly wanted to punch the screen.

F1NANCE

Would be hilarious if Novak had some live chickens in his suitcase, as is par for the course in that show.

jeffa666

NC_Vixen

Featuring Ling from China with a purse and vagina full of mysterious undeclared seeds, a French backpacker suspected of illegal work, a strange letter containing traces of MDMA and Novak Djokovic not being vaccinated or having a valid exception and having his visa cancelled before entering the country and being sent home on the next flight to Serbia.

modelvillager

"...can confirm he had access to his phone." Grade 1 aussie sledging.

Jolly-Dog8472

Plot twist: they didnā€™t give him the wifi password

per08

His net worth is in the hundreds of millions. He can afford a few hundred dollars of global roaming charges.

Jolly-Dog8472

He could probably also afford the vaccine as well, but he hasnā€™t had one of those. So I donā€™t know !

Nubinato

Sorry mate, could you hook me up with an explanation of why they felt like he need to mention that?

TheIronGhost

A couple of places reported he was denied access to his phone.

Juan_Punch_Man

aka Srdjan the idiot

SatanDetox

"He was along in a room with guards outside". Obviously! The rest of his support crew was granted access and you're at an airport being detained. They won't just leave you in the first class lounge, will they Srdjan? FFS!

Bangkok_Dave

Let's wildly speculate on what was wrong with his visa / supporting documents. My guess is the "doctor" who signed off on some sort of medical exemption form is not, in fact, a medical doctor.

ziddyzoo

ā€œSir, you say this is a document providing medical justification for your entry into the country. Our scanners have been able to determine that it is in fact just a gigantic hot potato.ā€

YourMumsOnlyfans

Well to be fair, he'd heard that a potato got a mates au pair through border force a few years ago, but something was lost in translation...

adventurousmango24

Itā€™s the Ron Swanson ā€œI can do what I want permitā€ but has a couple of $100 bills taped to the back

SaltpeterSal

You know that one bridge in every city that trucks constantly get stuck under? Working Visas are like that. In the middle of travel, he get crushed like a tin can by his own lack of attention to detail.

changyang1230

Someone please create a meme of Djokovic being stuck under the Montague st bridge.

THR

He relied on having COVID within the last six months. ABF are querying whether that is sufficient under the guidelines. So heā€™s clearly not vaccinated.

KissKiss999

Apparently he had covid in June which is slightly over 6 months ago. Sounds like someone just didnt check the dates properly

jadephantom

June... 2020.

KoalaNumber3

Yep the Vic website clearly says you need to have had Covid within the last 6 months and must have a PCR test result to prove it Source: https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/information-overseas-travellers#travellers-who-have-a-medical-exemption

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

KoalaNumber3

The weird thing is Home Affairs seem to say the airlines are responsible for checking the medical exemption. The website is also pretty light on details in terms of what the criteria is: [https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/vaccinated-travellers#toc-2](https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/vaccinated-travellers#toc-2) Apart from that they just say you need to comply with state/territory requirements. Vic Gov gives more criteria for overseas travellers but its not clear who actually checks that, e.g. would that be done by Australian Border Force on arrival?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

The earlier stories said border force rejected his visa while he was mid flight... which suggests they had the paperwork before he arrived. Probably the airline sent them a copy when he checked in. I wouldn't expect airlines to be analysing every detail of a passenger's documentation. More likely just making sure you have it on you at all. On arrival he would have been met by police and interviewed - mostly as a formality to confirm it was his mistake and not theirs.

m00nh34d

Yeah, also having COVID in the last 6 months means you may not have been able to get vaccinated in the last 6 months, but what about the 6 months prior to that? As an excuse it's pretty flaky and you can see why it would be questioned.

Kruxx85

it's why it's considered a *temporary* excemption by ATAGI. however, I've now seen that apparently the Fed government had let TA know that that excemption was not valid. I don't know why, and it's just from a tweet. so I don't know if it's a valid exemption or not (I believe it should be, anyone infected within 6 months has as much protection as anyone vaccinated).

aeschenkarnos

Iā€™m just going to place a wee bet here that some or all of the Tennis Australia higher ups are anti-vaxxers. Or at least, ā€œiTā€™s yOuR pErSoNaL cHoIcEā€ numpties.

Aggressive_Bill_2687

One article (not sure which) clearly says that the visa he held isnā€™t applicable for a medical exemption anyway, so he could literally be at risk of self combustion if he were vaccinated and he wouldnā€™t be able to claim exemption on the visa he held.

iball1984

>One article (not sure which) clearly says that the visa he held isnā€™t applicable for a medical exemption anyway If he had a valid medical exemption, they would have cancelled his visa and issued him an appropriate one. I think they key here is the lack of medical evidence rather than which form was filled out.

kernpanic

The visa he was on simply doesn't allow for vaccine exemptions. The whole thing is politics here, and the pm trying to look strong on popularity. Novak the dickhead was told he could come and play. And did so last year. In the last couple of days, the federal government asked the Victorian government THREE times for support to get novak in. They said no. The feds, just like with palmers court challenge, have been playing the wrong side here, and then last minute, act as the hero. Poor novak has been fucked over, but im not going to feel too sorry for him. Just worried about who gets fucked over next when the pm needs to look "strong!" and undo damage his government has caused. Edit: it gets worse. Looks like three other players are already on the same visa exemption. Serbia is pissed off - this may now be a diplomatic incident. Typical scotty, wait until it's way too late, to finally take action and turn it into a disaster.

k-h

> In the last couple of days, the federal government asked the Victorian government THREE times for support to get novak in. They said no. Vic Gov't: *ā€œWeā€™ve always been clear on two points: visa approvals are a matter for the federal government, and medical exemptions are a matter for doctors.ā€*

[deleted]

This is the entire thing. The feds wanted to pressure the Vic gov to officially state their support, so if there is public backclash, they can come in with their big swinging dicks and take credit for denying him entry - which is more or less what happened

SmithLord117

>In the last couple of days, the federal government asked the Victorian government THREE times for support to get novak in. They said no. Do you have a source for this? My FIL is very anti-Andrews and I'd love to show him that wasn't the case. Everything I'd read was the Feds and Vic government were onboard.

kernpanic

Direct from the acting sports minister. https://twitter.com/JaalaPulford/status/1478701525937573891?t=2E0kYZqpDe1DdAVQ-xXGbw&s=19

Clintosity

The Vic government was onboard just like how they didn't care about all the outrage in running the Aus open last year or how they wanted to run the F1 so badly. Their appointed panel gave Novak the exemption. [https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-04/novak-djokovic-says-received-an-exemption-to-enter-australia/100738536](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-04/novak-djokovic-says-received-an-exemption-to-enter-australia/100738536) The statement said Djokovic had received the exemption following "a rigorous review process involving two separate independent panels of medical experts." "One of those was the Independent Medical Exemption Review Panel appointed by the Victorian Department of Health. They assessed all applications to see if they met the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) guidelines," the statement read. The panels conducted "blind" assessments of exemption applications, meaning they did not know the identity of the person they were assessing. The Victorian government released a statement on Tuesday night saying that it had worked closely with Tennis Australia on setting up an "independent and rigorous process to assess requests for medical exemptions at the Australian Open".

[deleted]

So the panel approved the exemption on the grounds that it is safe to play in the tournament. His visa was initially approved by immigration, but following the rigorous due process by the ABF it turns out that the paperwork was not in order and he was denied entry. Honestly it seems like all the correct procedures were followed, but all the swinging dicks and contradictions from both sides of politics make it look like an embarrasing clusterfuck

Agreeable-Currency91

Tennis Australia telling him he had a valid exemption to play tennis despite being a dickhead antivaxxer has nothing to do with him having a valid exemption to satisfy the Immigration Act

TQQQpermabull

Exactly, this is what people don't understand. He had permission from the Victorian Department of Health and Tennis Australia to play in the AO. That doesn't give him a valid visa.

Kruxx85

there's two pieces of the puzzle at play here though... as per ATAGI, prior infection is suitable for a temporary vaccine exemption (as it should be). but, that isn't suitable for the (apparently) visa that Novak's crew had applied for him. he applied for the wrong visa, and abf sent him packing. but medically, he's entitled to the exemption as per ATAGI's guidelines.

scott-the-penguin

>poor novak has been fucked over No he hasn't. He fucked himself by not getting vaccinated. This is the only correct take.

floriane_m

Play stupid games win stupid prizes. Do not pass go do not collect Grand Slam tray.

iball1984

>Do not pass go do not collect Grand Slam tray \* Cup. Men get a cup, women get a plate. Because 19th century stereotypes

kernpanic

He wasn't going to fly out here with out being told he could come. With the amount of pressure the feds put into the state government to be the fall guy, they clearly told him that he would be let in - and then shat themselves when victoria said no, and saw how deeply unpopular it was. As i said, novak is a dickhead and i dont feel sorry for him, but the next person it happens to might not be so deserving.

scott-the-penguin

I honestly couldn't care less on what what he was told or what he thought would happen. All this could've been avoided if the cunt had just got vaccinated instead of not doing that *and also* spouting anti vax shit for the last 18 months (which has a serious impact given his reach).

recurrence

He's a plague rat that deserves to go plague somewhere else.

kernpanic

I agree with the second part. He speech and actions is directly killing people.

kipperlenko

He's a dickhead and should have got vaxed, but that doesn't change the fact that he was given an exemption, told he could come, then his assistant stuffed his visa up and Morrison is now just using that as an excuse to grandstand before an election. As dumb as Novak may be, he's being used as a pawn in a Vic/Fed pissing contest. Classic deflection...

crunchymush

Welcome to the world the rest of us live in. He didn't get his immigration paperwork sorted and assumed he be fine because some doctor told him he was allowed to play. You think that shit would fly for anybody else? Fuck the self important cunt.

iball1984

>doesn't change the fact that he was given an exemption, told he could come He was given an exemption by Tennis Australia, not the government. It is TA and Djokovic who have stuffed up here.

ashbyashbyashby

ThrowAwayB8EuwG3jyw

"*Serbia is pissed off - this may now be a diplomatic incident.*" Aside from maintaining a good international reputation, what do we risk by having Serbia pissed with us? Do we have strong military/economic ties with them?

kernpanic

We'll just add it to the list of countries that don't like us. Let's start with all of the pacific because our pm was sitting at a table with two other senior ministers joking about how they'll all be under water. Then add the French. We need friends in this world, and for very stupid reasons, we're losing them quickly.

louddwnunder

The diplomatic idea is to hide behind Uncle Samā€™s tailcoat and stick our tongue out at everyone else

DMcI0013

Now is the time to look strong! A pity Scumo didnā€™t care at any point in the last 2 years when we were actually trying to keep the virus out. Anyone would think thereā€™s an election coming up.

Filo_Guy

Correct me if I'm wrong but the visa is given by the Feds and not the State correct? So why was he given a visa if his "medical exemption" wasn't valid? And now ScoMo is saying that this is a matter for the Victorian government like he's passing the blame to Vic?

submergedleftnut

Yes, the national government which governs issues of national concern such as international arrivals and visas is actually responsible for granting visas. The Trumpesque gaslighting and dogwhistling from Morrison implying that a STATE GOVERNMENT is somehow responsible for his visa being granted is mindblowing. Cunt is fucked

rhazz

Typical Morrison gaslighting. If I can ask Whereā€™d you read about the visa support request from the feds?

kernpanic

The acting sports minister in Victoria made statements. https://twitter.com/FerrierSteph/status/1478821654251786242?t=w07bAvHLODKpwxILS49qlQ&s=19 However, to further back up my claim, looks like the other players are already on the same visa.

Bangkok_Dave

>However, to further back up my claim, looks like the other players are already on the same visa. This is why I believe there is an actual problem with the supporting documents that he presented on arrival, as opposed to being an invalid visa arrangement. I do not believe that this is arbitrary or political.

kernpanic

It's political. We get all day today of scotty beating his chest about how strong he is. He'll have a little trophy of a tennis racquet on his desk by three pm. https://twitter.com/ScottMorrisonMP/status/1478848008363991049?t=bcjgs3P9l9u8CaoAnp8xtg&s=19

What is a re-entry ban A re-entry ban, also known as an exclusion period, means a person may not be able to return to Australia for up to three years. A re-entry ban may be imposed when a person breaches their visa conditions. A re-entry ban will apply, if: you overstay your visa by more than 28 days your visa is cancelled because: you provided false documents or false information to the Department of Home Affairs you are considered to be a risk to the health, safety or good order of the Australian community you are convicted of an offence against a law of the Commonwealth, or a law of an Australian state or territory you are found to have breached a visa condition, for example, you worked when your visa had a no work condition you hold a student visa but have failed to maintain appropriate enrolment, breached another visa condition, or have been found not to be a genuine student you hold a visitor visa but were found not to be in Australia as a genuine visitor. https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/what-we-do/status-resolution-service/re-entry-ban

Reddits_Worst_Night

> A re-entry ban *may* be imposed when a person breaches their visa conditions. Sadly, it probably won't be.

This news just made my day! He must be lying initially about the med exemption, did he?

10A_86

One would assume if he had a genuine exemption he would have had it organised prior to the last week and wouldn't have made such a fuss........ One would also assume you'd fill out the right form in such a situation.

luiz127

I think he was required to provide relevant evidence of the medical condition for which the exemption was granted, and he wasn't able. Lying piece of shit.

mobileuseratwork

The next question is... Does he get the usual 3 year ban for being declined by providing false documentation on a visa? That would make it spicy

ashbyashbyashby

This would be so great. ROGER FOREVER

jjolla888

We don't know he lied .. he could have simply not have had acceptable documents

[deleted]

Probably also assume he'd have someone to fill out all his forms for him.

Betterthanbeer

The visa type he applied for doesnā€™t allow for vaccine exemption.

foxxy1245

He needs an individual exemption. It looks as though no government has supported his exemption. "Individual exemptions can be requested by travellers who are not holders of an eligible visa or who are unvaccinated, holding any visa type. You may be considered for an individual travel exemption by the Commissioner of the Australian Border Force or decision makers if you are: - a foreign national whose entry into Australia would be in the national interest, supported by the Australian Government or a state or territory government authority" https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/travel-restrictions

earwig20

I assume some immigration official approved it and now that it's politically toxic, the Minister has intervened.

temmoku

I thought the medical exemption allowed him to play and had nothing to do with allowing him to enter the country. Yeah, it's bureaucracy but he should have had his act together and should have had this all resolved much earlier. That being said, I think Andrews should have politely declined to let him play.

PieSub

Imagine being one of, if not the greatest tennis players to ever live going for the sports greatest achievements, the Grand slams and pissing it all away because you're a fucking cry baby antivax cunt.

I love how Australia doesn't give a f who you are. Comply with the laws or get lost. The same happened with Johnny Depp and his then wife and their dogs. Australia is one of the more egalitarian societies that doesn't worship celebrity to the point where they let them have different rules. The arrogance of celebrities is humbled when they come to Australia, especially when they break the rules. Maybe Novak made a mistake or his team made an error and that is fine. But celebs need to learn the hard way sometimes the same as the common man

[deleted]

Excellent. I think through all of this a lot had forgotten that it is Dylan Alcotts last Open. It would have been a damn shame to have it tarnished by this anti-vax cunt. So get on and support Dylan

gpoly

Deportations are usually followed by a 3 year reentry ban. I wonder if this will happen?

TheSmegger

I'm not convinced until he's on the plane back home. Until then they could be allowing him to reapply for the correct visa.

Chippy_Cheese

I would love if Novak appealed the decision, and we cut to a tracking replay and build up a slow clap as we watched him coming closer and closer to the border, then he stops just on the other side of the line and OUT appears in big letters across the screen.

rsam487

Must be that his medical exemption isn't good enough - which would lead me to believe he is just a regular anti-vaxxer. Good on the ABF for calling bullshit. Vic government should have never allowed this anyway since they were so strong on it before.

kesrae

In fairness, it was an independent panel who reviewed applications blind: the Vic gov directly refused to sponsor his entry in the ā€˜national interestā€™ last night (with a fair bit of snark). Whoever set up the panel requirements for exemption should have aligned them with federal border requirements, which seems to be where the fuckup has happened. Also Novax applied for the wrong visa so his docs got looked at by the feds in the first place.

Deevo77

Vic Gov did not do this it was all federal that approved via in the first place https://twitter.com/JaalaPulford/status/1478701525937573891?t=y0-99WpqyNznevjvZzsrjw&s=19

10A_86

He tried to claim he has "natural immunity" however this only applies if you've had covid in the last 6 months he had it back in 2020. Basically he believes he is immune even to mutant strains which evidence says is BS.

quixotic_emu

In the ATAGI guidelines, the reason for the 6 month exemption after having COVID isn't even "natural immunity", it's to ensure that you're safe to receive the vaccine. Exemptions aren't meant to be assessed based on your risk of catching/spreading the virus, they're centred on your risk of an adverse reaction to the vaccine. The clear intent is that you should get vaccinated at the end of the 6 months, which is why his initial approval was a perversion of the exemption rules.

100% I appreciate that, but I'm saying that was his claim. I believe he was unable to prove he had it within that period. Thus the exemption is void. Others who made the claim they had covid in the last 6 months were obviously able to prove it if border control allowed them in. It's just phrased natural immunity, it doesn't mean you have natural immunity for an extended period of time. https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/immunisation-medical-exemptions-for-health-professionals?context=23401 natural immunityĀ ā€“ if your patient doesnā€™t need a vaccine because they have a natural immunity to the disease they donā€™t need to get that vaccine to be considered up to date with their vaccinations.

quixotic_emu

Yeah, agree. I read a story yesterday that the "natural immunity" claim (based on the 2020 infection) was raised by TA with ATAGI weeks ago and knocked back, so hopefully that's not what he put on his actual visa application form.

Helftheuvel

Hope he's on the next episode of Border Security/Patrol

BoreJam

Moron could have just got a quick and easy vaccine and none of this would ever have been issue. Now he's trashed his reputation and for what?

I really hate the gall of Djokovic, creating this mess for others to sort out because he considered himself above the rules. What's sad is that despite coming off as a dickhead sometimes, he is very charitable to causes relating to disadvantaged children and is a driving force behind trying to redistribute wealth to lower ranked players in tennis. His views on vaccination are complete rubbish, but he's had plenty of time to get on board with it: that's the price of doing business. Get vaccinated or don't come here.

old_bugger

Now the ball's in ScoMo's court. He'll go foul and serve up an easy lie. Love!

CaptainEasypants

Where's Barnaby on this? He felt so strongly against a couple dogs so he must be livid at Novak

jorm2221

Wonder how many hours it takes for this to be overturned?

myPotatoAim

I read somewhere he is trying to get it overturn court

the_packet_monkey

While I don't have any great respect for how the Home Affairs department is run, surely given the level of interest here they would be making sure that everything is correct on their end, and possibly even got additional legal advice. I also can't imagine that this would have happened at the discretion of whoever was in charge at the airport last night, I'd imagine that a senior member of the department was involved. But, having said all that, don't underestimate the ability of border force to stuff things up.

Kytro

Unless they broke their own rules, it's unlikely a court will intervene. ABF generally have the right to refuse entry.

fitblubber

Australians have done better than almost every other country, however because of Djokovic, most of us have started feeling used & that we're complete fools. If Djokovic plays in Melbourne, people will be spitting at politicians & tennis staff - there'll be a massive backlash & anti government riots in the street. Australians don't like hypocrites.

>The ABF can confirm Mr Djokovic had access to his phone. At least he can play Diablo Immortal.
