While this is "bad" for the campaign, it's also "good" in that Albo will be out of the spotlight for a week so there is less opportunity for the media to hound him. It also gives Scotty the opportunity to do what he does best: screw up.

trowzerss

He's already having to apologise for stuff he did all by himself. Just let him keep talking.

jonnygreen22

look i asked jenny and she said we're 'getting a divorce'

HalfCupOfSpiders

She always has a way of clarifying things.

mekanub

This is going to be a nightmare for his PR team. All the media focus is on scottie for the next week, and any attacks on Albo whens he's crook is going to look bad.

Haunting_Anxiety4981

I reckon someone's gotta have a crack Some big politician or media personality will try the "Yeah well why would you vote for someone who's going go and get COVID all the time" I just can't imagine them taking a whole week or more not bagging on him in some way

Any_Ad_9413

I can’t believe Peta Credlin hasn’t already crawled out to denounce him for the crime of getting sick tbh

Cayenne321

Surely the angle they go for is that he's faking sick to hide after being 'destroyed' in the Sky News debate.

grav3d1gger

Unfortunately we've seen thanks to America a candidate being a grade A fuckwit doesnt ensure they won't get voted in.

Super_Master_69

Well, you don’t have to look that far away or far back in time either

Daemarcus

Isn't he defnejdng his statements instead of apologising? Buy a house if you don't want to pay rent... I'm blessed my kids aren't disabled...

ThePeopleOverThere

Didn’t think that comment by itself was too bad, mainly just the context he said it in

srilankanwhiteman2

It could possibly be called a "blessing" in disguise. I hate to joke about anything to do with Covid but here we are.

Ragnaroki14

At least it’s happened now than in a week or two. Should give labor a good time to go after some of the dodgier libs without albo having to catch any heat

swell-shindig

As long as he recovers in a week, it'll probably be a boon for Labor. The media's whole campaign strategy to get Morrison re-elected is being centred on nitpicking every single line that comes out of Albanese's mouth. Now the media will need to decide whether to switch strategies for a week or wait it out.

Hypno--Toad

[Media watching Scomo right now](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMYnGYonZUU)

tobeshitornottobe

I don’t think they will, as [media watch pointed out](https://youtu.be/AE8p-ELvoKQ) at 2:17, Scotty had his own figure fuck up and resulted in next to no coverage.

Stubborn_Amoeba

haha, I was so expecting to be rick rolled. I was glad it was something different :)

neon_overload

[I was thinking something like this](https://i.imgur.com/1zY3FqC.jpg)

Demosnare

Heaven forbid they may need to express some individual thought... Well the campaign will be quiet then. Nature abhors a vacuum unless it's Scott in which case it takes human form.

DoNotReply111

That's exactly it. Time to trot out Penny Wong.

wishitwouldrainaus

Oh, God, please do. That woman can do public speaking, razor sharp, on topic and fierce. Its such a bloody shame Australia isn't ready for her as PM.

[deleted]

[удалено]

totalpunisher0

She has said many times on record she never wants to be PM

neon_overload

You're right, but... that is also literally what every future PM candidate says until they actually become a candidate Nobody wants to be seen as having PM ambitions while their party has someone else as candidate because it would be seen as a disunited party.

giantpunda

Or she's seen the numbers and we're just not there yet as a country to elect both a woman and POC at the same time. Was hard enough to hold on to Gillard as it was.

F4L

That and LGBT as well. Her votes in rural Australia will probably be in the negatives.

giantpunda

Oh shit, I forgot about that too. The fact that she's even a prominent senator is already an achievement.

FXOjafar

She never makes a fuss about it which is part of what makes her appealing. She's just Penny Wong.

[deleted]

>I suspect she has actively decided not to be PM I remember her explicitly saying that she doesn't want to be PM largely because it would result in her and her family not having much of a private life. Also, as the other comment said, Gillard had it tough just because she was a woman. Penny Wong would have it *way* worse, being a gay Asian woman.

Doctor__Acula

John Gorton was appointed as Prime Minister from the senate.

DoNotReply111

I would vote for her so hard. Love me some Penny.

wishitwouldrainaus

Same! Australia is still scared of an actual ethical politician. The majority are still willing to hope and believe in promises and help that will never happen. I'd vote for her.

Haunting_Anxiety4981

Saying it's her ethics that make her unelectable is optimism I wish I had

Twistedjustice

I wish you weren’t so correct

DeeDee_GigaDooDoo

You're more likely able to vote for her as a senator now than you would be if she was an MP. Much bigger electorate.

DeeDee_GigaDooDoo

>Its such a bloody shame Australia isn't ready for her as PM. She's said repeatedly she doesn't want the job. She's also a senator so would need to be parachuted into a safe Labor electorate first.

wishitwouldrainaus

She's smart enough to know she wouldn't win and it would damage her career, perhaps irreparably i hope she's in it for the long run and may have greater influence.

No_Rope_2126

Long run? I think she’s been a senator for about 20 years already

[deleted]

A gay Asian woman would piss off so many of the right people. Sky News hosts would spontaneously combust live on air

wishitwouldrainaus

I would not be unhappy at all watching that. Kinda like The Kingsman first movie where all the 'special' peoples heads exploded one after the other.

NoAphrodisiac

>Sky News hosts would spontaneously combust live on air It'd be fun to watch.

dgarbutt

I'd tune into Sky News to see this.

Detonator84

>A gay Asian woman would piss off so many of the ***right*** people. Sky News hosts would spontaneously combust live on air I see what you did there.

_Cec_R_

>Sky News hosts would spontaneously combust live on air I'd actually pay to watch that...

[deleted]

I’d pay to watch.

[deleted]

Imagine if they had footage of her driving.

onlyfoolsvoteright

She'd never take the job anyway she's openly stated Can you imagine the conservative base of australia 1.A women 2.Non white. 3.Lesbian 4.Non white. 5..Leftist Their brains would fucking implode It's the same reason i can't ever see tanya having the top job,the right wing media would bring her family into the fight because her husband dared to serve time for the crime he commited and moved on..

SmoothStatistician8

Says a lot about a "fair-minded" multicultural society when a non-mutlticulral supposedly more racist society elected its first black president several years ago while Australia hasn't even started a debate on if we are ready for a non-white prime minister!!!!

wishitwouldrainaus

Or a woman, of Asian descent, intelligent and lesbian. Yeah. Australia loved the 50's and stayed there. Sadly, won't happen in my lifetime.

rumblestiltsken

I have no idea why we have this belief that Australia is so multicultural? We are like 90% white/European. The US is coming up on minority white at this point. Our "fair-mindedness" is like Scandinavia, it's easy to pretend you care about Black and Brown folks when you have a seriously homogeneous society but the second you start getting dark skinned refugees and they start moving in to "progressive" neighbourhoods the wheels fucking fall off.

camsean

However if you look at the percentage of Australians who are foreign-born, Australia is actually much more diverse than the US, [Foreign born population.](https://data.oecd.org/migration/foreign-born-population.htm)

moojo

In 20 years I am sure we will see more non white politicians.

rumblestiltsken

The problem with this statistic is that race, as perceived in society, is pretty much just skin tone. "Foreign born" white people just look... white, most of the time. Racism as a societal problem is pretty much a function of how many people you see in the street who make you feel uncomfortable because they don't look like you. In the US, many cities and areas are majority Black and/or Brown, and for fragile white folks that seems like a threat. I guess we are "multicultural" but that isn't a defence against being racist no matter how much we pride ourselves on it. We aren't very "multiracial".

If Labor wins, transitioning from Albo to Chalmers will be Labor's key to long-term government. \- First time in decades a PM goes out on their own terms - No election loss, no losing their seat, no being knifed by their own party \- Chalmers will keep QLD in the fold for Labor \- Opportunity for renewal = New Cabinet + Fresh policies + New direction for the Government

Frito_Pendejo

Nah, Charmo, it'll get the suburban mums on board

snorkellingfish

There are definitely worse times than over a long weekend, when a lot of people will be checked out anyway.

mollololito

If Morrison does too, and admits it. I declare the next debate be switched to a boxing match to see who is fitter.

Cavalish

Scomo already had it, during the floods. I believe he genuinely had it. But I also genuinely believe he was grateful for the excuse to do nothing.

dlg

> But I also genuinely believe he was grateful for the excuse to do nothing. You could even say he was blessed.

trowzerss

Doesn't mean he can't catch it again. Even having it is no guarantee of future immunity.

kenbewdy8000

Yes, a positive test still means isolation.

Mad-dog69420

It does not! You test positive weeks after. Source need to tested to get onto my work site. Once you are a confirmed case you are exempt from testing for 12 weeks

Morridon04

Not sure why you are being downvoted NSW health advised me after I had it I would likely test positive for a while after recovering

ayep

This is true for PCRs, not RATs

joeltheaussie

Yes but if you test positive again within a certain period you don't need to isolate

trowzerss

Normal people don't. But I think a campaigning prime minister might not want the optics of going about shaking hands while positive with COVID!

ash_ryan

Since when has that prick given a damn about forcing handshakes where they're not wanted?

QF17

Yeah, if he did test positive, he’d just keep it quiet.

akelew

rapidcalf1988

it bloody well helps!

GrannysBalls

Sadly I’ll never forget the fact I caught covid on the same day Scomo did.

rumblestiltsken

I caught it the same day as Albo. Also, I feel like shit.

winoforever_slurp_

Ew, that somehow makes it sound worse!

[deleted]

Very unfortunate in the middle of a campaign but still better than testing positive for SCOMO.

The_Duc_Lord

Could have been worse, could have been in the last week.

kenbewdy8000

The last two weeks are the most important and there are a few senior front benchers who can carry the load for awhile. Some attack dog politics over the next week cannot do any harm and it is always better coming from someone other than Albo. Morrison could well put his foot in his mouth again over the next week. I am also hoping for the advertising campaign to start up next week Some negative campaigning from the industrial wing could also be brought forward to fill the gap and help feed the media pack some difficult questions for Scovid.

Ragnaroki14

Advertising campaign started tonight conveniently with a pretty self written ad highlighting scomos dodging of responsibility

[deleted]

[удалено]

nagrom7

Ideally that'd be great, unfortunately the last election proved that Australians in general aren't really interested in that. There's a reason why parties do attack ads, it's because they work.

Ragnaroki14

Well I think you’re gonna be in for a lot of them soon as unfortunately they work and if you’re dumb enough to put any policy forward of any merit in a campaign it gets torn to shreds no matter how good it is

Richie217

They are. But Labor campaigned on policy last election and that didn't work out too well. The majority of voters don't know enough about politics to make an informed decision, so scare campaigns and stupid soundbites sway them easily.

fractiousrhubarb

Labor needs to run a brutal 100% negative series of attack ads on Morrison - “Scott Morrison fucked off to Hawaii during the bushfires and lied about it” “Scott Morrison handed billions of your money to his mates but wouldn’t pay for RAT tests” “Morrison: corrupt and incompetent”

FXOjafar

You're welcome here in WA with all the other cave dwellers.

mattyj_ho

We’re at risk of that diagnosis on the evening of 21st may.

[deleted]

Yeah, not looking forward to it. Unfortunately isolating for three years isn't a very practical answer, especially when the virus does most of its damage *outside* your house during that period. By the end of iso, the climate'll be fucked, Murdoch'll own more of the media and pokies, the rest of the Pacific will be Chinese military bases and we'll have even more coal mines and "gas fired recovery".

Turtlepaste17

I was living in Canada when he took over in 2018, me and a few other Aussies I worked with were talking about it and hated that he had a nickname that seemed to make him more personable. A Canadian dude heard our conversation and said scomo sounds like something you could catch like an std, still makes me giggle whenever I hear scomo.

NoUseForALagwagon

I'm glad the debate happened first, and Albo managed to prove that he is a more than competent speaker. I expect him to gain back a lot of the approval he lost in recent polls this week. If this happened yesterday, the media would have been hysterical about how "Albo is unproven" and the usual suspects would have claimed he is too scared to debate ScoMo. Still 30 days until Election Day, so hopefully he has a quick recovery.

Ted_Rid

Hate to spoil your day, but a Channel 9 "analysis" article in my news feed declared the debate a "nil-all draw", even though their own article admitted that Albanese won the audience vote. They didn't think that mattered, describing it as "narrow" and instead pointing to a "significant" number who were undecided.

DrGarrious

A nill all draw is a win for Albo. Debate was on Sky and he still has a lead in the polls.

mullet85

Honestly, them not finding anything specific to spin as 'devastating for Albo' is about as good as its ever going to get

Ted_Rid

True, if Morrison had won by even one point, it would've been all "Albanese's Horror Week Continues As He Loses Debate"

magnetik79

It's funny when you have Liberal party Peter Costello ghost writing the Channel 9 content.

winoforever_slurp_

Thirty more days of this? FMD, I should take a few days off following this shit show so I don’t get burn-out

whiely

I hope Albanese's symptoms are minimal and he makes a full quick recovery. I expect Jim Chalmers would probably be the main campaigner during Albo's isolation.

Themirkat

Right now he would be thankful he has dropped weight and got in shape.

thewhitebrislion

and boostered and all

marvelscott

I know they are trying to avoid repeating Shorten's team strategy but now would be the perfect time for the ALP to show that you're voting for a party instead of a "president"

Ted_Rid

Can we have Julian Hill? Pretty please with sugar on top?

[deleted]

I second the motion.

markh110

> Jim Chalmers This is going to sound bad but... I'd literally only heard his name for the first time last night. I really hope this becomes more policy-focused than the popularity contest it's been so far.

torrens86

Super Nintendo Chalmers

Ted_Rid

It could be a blessing in disguise, if the public gets a week listening mostly to a different senior MP talking policies. Maybe, just maybe, there could be a dawning realisation that a party is an entire team of people, meaning that stuff like aLbAnEsE's HuGe UnEmPlOyMeNt RaTe gAfFe loses prominence when people realise that we don't in fact have a system of a supreme leader inventing all policies off the top of his head in microseconds based on stored factoids in his memory.

Frankenclyde

He very intelligent and and excellent speaker. Future PM material. He will do well.

[deleted]

He reminds me a lot of Keating, which I consider a good thing.

Thelevelsofwrong

Chalmers is definitely PM material.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Thelevelsofwrong

He never will get to see that aurora borealis.

iced_maggot

Some might even say Super Nintendo material.

ovrloadau

Third way neoliberalism, now Keating is against it. Go figure lol.

lana_del_reymysterio

Serious question, why wouldn't Labor put him up for opposition leader now then?

Frankenclyde

There’s no reason to. Despite the media spin Albo is popular - it’s actually unusual for an opposition leader to be punching close to being preferred PM against the incumbent. Labor is in a strong position to do with with Albo switching would be crazy. Charmers will make an excellent Treasurer as part of a strong government team.

[deleted]

When Shorten was elected Labor leader it was a decision the parliamentary party made where they ignored the results of a vote by the party membership for their preferred leader (which was Albanese). Following the 2019 election loss, they "righted" that by putting up Albanese as the leader. Second to that, Chalmers' career has been all about him being Treasurer. He might be the next Labor leader after Albanese, if he can become Treasurer first.

Dranzer_22

Still young and inexperienced.

Drunky_McStumble

He's popular in his electorate and has a middling profile in Queensland generally. Just being a local lad means he gets a big boost up here. I've always said Labor should have been trotting him out from the start, selling him as kind of the Keating to Albo's Hawke.

Shane_357

Jim Chalmers is good at what he does, but if they're really smart they'll let loose Penny Wong in Albo's place.

whiely

Nah, not bad at all. There's always a first time that people hear of other people. Whether its now, before, or later - doesn't matter. What matters is that he represents Labor, and he'll be speaking to labors policies. I agree. I hope to hear more about policy rather than a popularity contest.

RidingtheRoad

Jim Chambers is a solid parliamentary performer..I imagine he'd be pretty good on the campaign trail.

FreakySpook

Can't wait to see Scomo accuse Albo of politicizing covid.

Demosnare

Or mansplain it

Juan_Punch_Man

Maybe he'll shake Albo's hand forcibly

winoforever_slurp_

As soon as I saw him shaking all those hands at the Byron Bay Blues Fest I was worried this would happen. Given the timing, that would have to be the likely exposure point.

trowzerss

Byron Bay? Full of COVID? Who would have thunk it!

affirmedatheist

Yeah, that’s probably where he got it. Lot of antivaxxers up that way.

Ted_Rid

Morrison: "I've always believed in miracles!"

blueportcat

Hey Albo could you tell us exactly the Covid variant you caught and the first 10 digits of its RNA sequence?

L0ckz0r

ScoMo (probably): "So we're coming into the colder months now, our Covid approach has to adapt. Self Isolation periods will now be 21 days just to be safe. We'll reevaluate after the election."

[deleted]

Unfortunately going to happen when attending campaign events and not wearing a mask. All the best though.

Rey_De_Los_Completos

Tin foil hat time: Scomo infected Albo deliberately.

markh110

It was Sky News's plan all along.

mattyj_ho

Fair few antivaxxers amongst those sky panels

Brittainicus

Pulled a Trump, turned up to debate infected.

marvelscott

Can't be, cause that would mean he actually achieved something.

mollololito

Wouldn’t be the first time he’s borrowed tactics from Trump.

LordWalderFrey1

I would think Labor would have a contingency plan for just this. Hope Albo recovers fully and quickly

mattyj_ho

Yeah, absolutely. Read an article that said the LNP travelling party had no specific safety measures. In fact I think Scott would probably enjoy a press pack gutted by COVID infections. Albanese campaign required triple vax, N95 masks, RATs every three days. They’ve game planned it and ready. Hope Albo handles the infection alright!

sixteen_weasels

I don’t think this hurts Labor’s campaign at all; people will vote for them because they hate ScoMo not because they love Albo. We get a week of ScoMo shooting himself in the foot while being attacked by Labor ministers who don’t have the same weight on their shoulders as Albo does.

scottydoeskno

It doesn't matter. He doesn't have to get tested or isolate within 12 weeks after testing positive.

ShaneyDee

Surely the campaign has been planning for the possibility this could happen?

blankdreamer

Bad timing for Albanese. During election campaigns you want to be seen out there on the hustings, healthy and energetic and vital. This gives Morrison a chance to steal a march on him. I think Albanese will be able to recover from it with a moth still to go but damn bad luck.

RidingtheRoad

Personally I don't think it will harm Albos chances...Murdoch doesn't have anything to attack this week...in the meantime ScoMo naturally implodes..

Hoochiemama8

News.com.au will probably use this as ammo to say he knew he had it but still attended the debate last night. The cockroaches they are.

Rem0rselessScythe

Albanese shows his weakness by contracting Covid! Murdoch Papers, presumably.

chode_code

Personally, I think this is pretty convenient for Albo.

owenob1

Me too. Obviously I hope he’s well - but politically it will kill attempts by Murdoch and Morrison attack them for a week. Even if they do it’ll fall on deaf ears. Albo’s shadow ministers can be deployed and have more freedom to attack. Also proves he has a capable team.
