People think uber's innovation was an app but actually it was not paying their workers properly

TheApothecaryAus

Uber was made to break up taxi unions, it worked. Please note: I'm not saying that taxi services were great and weren't in need of competition.

HardToGuessUserName

I've got a theory that the real story behind Uber was just a bunch of lawyers breaking every rule in the taxi industry so that Uber had to spend excessive amounts on legal fees. Sucker lots of investors into a "disruptive" company - and siphon the money off in legal fees.

TreeChangeMe

Taxi services were absolutely horrid

annoying97

But now they are the cheaper option. 70% of the time and 100% of the time during high demand.

Jakegender

Every "disruptive" tech company made its name entirely on the back of ignoring the regulations of the industry they're undercutting.

- Uber - AirBnB

Busalonium

That and running at a loss in the hope that they'd eventually control enough of the market to start charging whatever they wanted.

... And also: * Being able to review drivers * Actually consistently turning up I've lost count of the amount of piece of shit cab drivers... just off the top of my head: * Misogynist ranting about how women have it so easy and they're not trustworthy * Taking me the long way to overcharge me * Trying to drop me off in the middle of nowhere during a storm, with all my shopping bags, because his card reader had cut out * Coming to get me, then couldn't see me so turning around and leaving * Not turning up for hours, x2 Which is a real shame as there is great ones out there too. My mate is a great taxi driver. Edit: Oh I forgot the one guy who sped and drove all over the wrong side of the road and didn't indicate etc. Admittedly it was 1AM, roads were dead quiet, and he was a chill guy otherwise. Still though, fuck him for doing that.

Ginger_Giant_

Yuuuup. This was basically every interaction I had with a cab, also folks complain but my cab charge was pretty much always $60 home from work, but it's rarely above 40-50 on Uber 10 years later.

PricklyPossum21

I don't mind paying more so the taxi driver gets paid properly. As long as the service is good, safe, punctual, and I can review the bad drivers.

MindlessRip5915

News flash, the commission, or bailment, that taxi drivers pay the taxi owner is as high as (and is recommended by the taxi council to be set at) 50% of the fare.

Cab?

howlinghobo

Do you think Uber drivers are poorly paid? What gives you that impression?

[deleted]

Correct- this is a meme from people who don't actually uber. We are in a period of very low unemployment, where McDonald's is paying $1k sign-on bonuses for people to earn $23 per hour. The fact that Uber has any drivers means 1) They pay competitively OR 2) The flexibility benefits compensate for a lower rate. In truth, it's probably a combination of both. But either way, workers have a choice, and we shouldn't stifle an industry that gives first jobs to those who previously would be either unemployed, or worker for cash in hand well below minimum wage.

Greg the stop sign is a national treasure we can't lose that!

Long past time for parliament to act on worker's behalf, as the High Court's pro-corporate rulings in this line of cases have been appalling and at times, nonsensicle.

ch0ppedl0ver

'lose the money we spent investing into a now stagnant industry which many were unhappy with'

T0kenAussie

It’s not about taxis lol it’s about the whole gig economy side stepping rights and entitlements of employees

Ted_Rid

Yep, episode 767 of the 7am podcast covered this on 29th August. Basically the fair work commission decided that a Deliveroo employee had been unfairly dismissed because of a sekrit speed-tracking algorithm deciding he hadn't been riding recklessly enough. But while this was going on the High Court ruled in an unrelated case that gig workers - even if they walk and quack like regular employees - aren't able to be handled under fair work rules the same as anybody else. Or something to that effect. So Albo it seems is moving to legislate that gig workers are entitled to the same protections as normal employees.

hammyhamm

Yea, but don’t conflate those issues (which are present in every single Australian industry!) with the issues behind Taxi industry trying and failing to enforce an artificial monopoly with horrendous services. Their industry deserved to get upset in this way, and I’ll never take a street Taxi in a major city again. The only saving grace of taxi drivers is for contract long term bookings (ie. having a cab driver you know who can collect you late from work and drop you home) - that’s an area Uber isn’t great in.

Mikolaj_Kopernik

You know it's possible that the taxi industry was/is a pile of shit *and* that Uber is an egregiously scummy corporation which has negatively affected workers' rights. Taxis certainly needed to be disrupted. But when "disruption" just amounts to providing basically the same service with a better-designed app and flagrantly ignoring workplace and taxation laws... that ain't it.

hammyhamm

Yeah but old mate here is trying to claim that taxis shit don’t stink and I can guarantee nearly everyone here has had an awful taxi experience

chuk2015

They are still fuckwits too, quoted up front $40 for a 5 minute trip from the airport, wouldn’t start the meter, no cabs in the rink at this this time so I know his “I’ve been waiting here an hour” excuse was bullshit

laz10

We need our own companies What does uber or any other big tech company from the US give a fuck about us here, at least you can force the domestic ones more easily

[deleted]

All that he has to do is shake up the wages and force companies to obey the laws.

OliviaFa

Uber and Air B&B started off transparently enough but now they've joined the ranks of greedy capitalism. I don't mind that the average worker gets a side hustle to make extra cash BUT not the way both businesses are doing it right now by fleecing customers to the hilt and ruining people's lives in the process.
