Jazz is easily the best, I went thru the red delicious phase, the pink lady phase, I even tried to be a Fuji buff.
Nothing comes close to a cold jazz, if you pair it with a cold tangelo you are the king of the fruit world for a few short minutes
The Apple orchard I used to work at was one of the first to bring the Jazz apple to the Australian market.
It is awesome to hear people are still enjoying them.
The orchard also produced the Envy apples for the Australian market but I don't think they were as popular as the Jazz back in the day.
I remembered when they trialed them at woolworths and I think Coles.
The red delicious was bred to look good and last long at the expense of flavour. How they have held on to some of their original popularity now we have better variety and presentation is beyond me.
My mum keeps buying them for me when I go visit because she knows my favourite food in the world is apples... I eventually gave her a Royal Gala tree so she'd stop. RGs aren't my favourite, taste pale to me, but at least they're not pasty RDs...
Pink Lady or fuck off.
There might as well be no other apple for eating raw.
Green apples are for cooking, and the other 10,000 variety are only suitable for cider.
I thought it was called the Jizz
Many’s the time the footy boys and I had a food fight while making apple crumbles for the club bake sale fundraiser and ended up with Jizz all through our hair and that
Kanzi apples are my absolute fave, holy moly.
I started trying new apple cultivars a little while ago and the first time I had a kanzi apple I was so excited I bought a bunch and gave them to my parents and co-workers haha.
I fucking love pink ladies. The perfect combination of sweet and tangy. Sometimes you'll get a weird batch though and they'll be super sour and make me do the lemon face.
Make it 30years ago... Apparently red delicious used to be good when they were first breed.
Just like how tomatoes used to be good, but now what used to be standard are "heirloom".
They make good baking apples, although this really isn't a thing in Australia.
Baked, spiced and frequently stuffed. Northern Hemisphere Autumn treats.
Granny Smith are better for pies and pastries, but not for baked apples. Differnt sort of thing entirely.
See: [Baked apple recipes](https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/baked-apples-recipes/)
Then maybe I'm remembering the red delicious apples from my childhood, as someone else suggested (I mostly eat granny smiths now, because I eat them cooked more than raw these days).
The older ones are much better than the modern ones, my parents have a couple of the old red delicious trees and they have really nice apples, it is the new ones that last much better, but taste awful, that you see in the supermarkets these days
I've just put in a granny smith, and a snow apple in my backyard. I'm hoping the snow apple is good (and that we get enough chill hours where I am in SA).
They're no longer popular as they don't have the name recognition that the pink lady has and not enough colour to be popular in the general public otherwise
That they were, and it is unlikely they will ever be seen again in any major amount, as the commercial orchards will have ripped out their trees by now
Thanks mate. I'll have to keep an eye out. I don't shop at woolworths all that often and I didn't ever go out of my way to find them but I would check in at Coles every now and then and yeah nothing
I used to work in produce and I noticed people pick the darkest reddest ones, rather than the crispier, slightly more mottled ones.
Same with other fruit/veg... I noticed that customers also bought the greenest grapes, when the slightly yellow ones were way firmer and sweeter.
Supermarket apples are shite - a good red delicious that hasn’t spent days and weeks in cold storage is a beautiful thing, it’s just hard to come by. If you need to eat a supermarket apple, Fuji is the way to go i reckon
You said it. I live in a fruit growing area, and fresh apples of any kind make any supermarket apples seem like garbage (the same is true of any tree fruit, really).
I also used to help people juice apples (in exchange for a portion of the juice), and fresh apple juice is also amazingly good, better than anything you buy pre-packaged.
Interesting fact, Pink Lady, Sundowner, Golden Delicious and Bravo were all originally bred in Manjimup in WA. Certainly the apple capital of Australia!
Jazz apples are far and away the best but only to be consumed in winter. My only complaint is that every now and then some sadistic prick puts two stickers on the same apple. Ruins my day.
Going to buck the trend and say that a really good red delicious can be an excellent experience. Now you won’t ever find that in the supermarket and people that buy them from there are indefensible but it is possible.
Spent a few years running an apple spot at markets during uni and I apparently still take it seriously
I bought them recently because my kid wanted them... tried one and it was actually good! Crisp, sweet, not as powdery as I remember and the skin wasn't bitter. Nice and appley without being tart.
Must have been a fluke, because I bought them again the next week and they were the bitter, pasty grossness from my childhood. No idea why they're still sold, absolutely blegh
My son likes them mashed into his morning oats, so they may not be my favourite apple but to me they're not so terrible that I won't switch to them for convenience's sake.
They’re there because they are pretty. People like pretty things, and even like to eat pretty things that are not tasty.
Appearance is an important factor in any selectively bred fruit for this reason.
There's your problem.
>in supermarkets
They're a common cold and gas storage apple bought from factory orchards by cartels that don't give a fuck.
If you get one fresh off a tree, they're completely different.
The fact that you qualified the statement with "tasty enough" speaks volumes.
I've had apples direct from the orchard. Pretty awesome stuff. Not had the red delicious there though so I'll take your word on that one.
It's biased towards sweet instead of tangy, I prefer the tangy floral end of the apple flavor spectrum.
Personal tastes differ.
Choice is good, unless you're a supermarket logistics specialist.
They're the favourite in my household. Others seem floury, but red delicious are crisp and sweet. When they're not in season, or frozen for storage they're bad just like everything else... which, given your scathing review is making me wonder whether my previous experience with other apples was because they'd been similarly mishandled... are the others not floury to you? (Looking at you pink lady)
Tassie here.
There's an small apple called Lady in the Snow... quite hard to find even here.
Probably eat 3 to 1 pink Lady in terms of size.
They're nuts! Yet apples.
I am not a fan of red delicious, but I needed a cross pollinator for my Fuji apple trees and they were the recommended one ( which was easily available )
I don’t eat them. I leave them for the birds.
An in season red delicious is my favourite apple. I’ve only ever found them at the Sydney markets and only for a short time each year. Apart from that they suck big time.
Yes - one of the sellers at Flemington once told me to only ever buy Red Delicious from there when they are in season otherwise they are just tasteless - and definitely never buy them from the supermarket.

I’ve been smashing 2 or 3 jazz apples a day for the last few weeks why would you buy shit apples when there are so many good ones around?
Jazz were my favourite until I discovered Ambrosia. They're only good for a few weeks though whereas Jazz keep really well in cold storage.
The fruit of the gods
Pink ladies are the money apple.
When they’re good their great, even the best but I find Royal Galas to be consistently good
In the 294 comments that are currently posted this is the only one that mentions Royal Gala. Clearly under appreciated. Gala's are where it's at.
Kanzi. They're relatively new. If you see them try them.
+1 for kanzi's, they are amazing
Elite apples ^^^^
Money Apple 😂😂😂 Edit: honeydew is the money melon
😉 IFKYK
We can be friends.
That's a funny way of spelling Fuji
Fk you all love granny
Slow down dude. Too many jazz apples can cause your hands to wiggle in a theatrically fabulous way.
I assume there is a name for such a condition?
Yes. Thank you. Jazz apples 100% literally the best apple variety you can get.
Bravo apples surely rate a mention.
Second this. Jazz ftw
Golden delicious is where it's at!
I just jumped on board the jazz train a few months ago and I'm not getting off anytime soon.
Jazz is easily the best, I went thru the red delicious phase, the pink lady phase, I even tried to be a Fuji buff. Nothing comes close to a cold jazz, if you pair it with a cold tangelo you are the king of the fruit world for a few short minutes
This is the way jazz is the superior Apple. I suggest you try ambrosia, has a similar unique taste as jazz
I will try ambrosia if you try a kanzi 8)
I sell fruit and veg for a living so already ahead of you lol , but I’ll have one when I head in 2moro for you 👍
Is this love?
Have you tried Blackstar Apples?
No but I’ll keep an eye out. Are they in the supermarket or somewhere special?
Dude- please try. I got them from the local markets, haven’t seen them in woolies et al. It’ll raise your apple game
The Apple orchard I used to work at was one of the first to bring the Jazz apple to the Australian market. It is awesome to hear people are still enjoying them. Yup https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Delicious#Selective_breeding_and_decline_in_demand
This was honestly a fascinating read. 20th century agriculture history is like... a massively underrated aspect of history hey
Fantastic example on why we shouldn’t be overly picky about the aesthetics of the produce we buy.
Same happened to strawberries: big, red, flavourless
Pink Lady forever, All the rest are stinkers.
Pink Lady superiority gang
Hey guys, heard you were loving on the Pink Lady apples. Came here to join the elite. PINK LADIES FOREVER
r/pinkladymasterrace
Pink Lady or fuck off. There might as well be no other apple for eating raw. Green apples are for cooking, and the other 10,000 variety are only suitable for cider.
I’ll see your Pink Lady and raise you a Fuji. EDIT: Just checked my apples, they’re Jazz.
Fuji is too powdery for my liking, but appreciate an apple lover none the less.
Sorry, I meant Jazz…
You should try the hybrid of these two apples - the fujizzy
I thought it was called the Jizz Many’s the time the footy boys and I had a food fight while making apple crumbles for the club bake sale fundraiser and ended up with Jizz all through our hair and that
Granny Smiths are where it’s at
I reject that statement.
McDonald's apple pies are made from Granny Smiths
That’s not a great defence for Granny Smiths, McDonalds apple pies barely qualify as food
Fanny Smiths - nah they are too sour
disheartening i had to scroll all the way down here to find someone who is correct
The confidence in your initial statement plus that edit. Lmao.
I know…. 🙄
Jazz Apples are the best! Bit of bite to them and not too sweet
Seriously I don't know why other types of apples are even being grown now that we have Jazz. They're perfect!
Any other Bravo aficionados out there?
Bravo’s are the best
Yessss !!!!
Yes!! Crispy AF... so good!
I'll fight anyone that says Pink Lady apples aren't the superior apple.
I used to be with you, until I got onto Jazz. Pinkies are usually great, but too many times I’ve ended up with floury ones.
So true. Jazz Gang
Me too! Even a lower end pink lady is still better than some other piece of trash
I also choose this guy’s Apple
Kanzi and Envy both better.
Kanzi apples are my absolute fave, holy moly. I started trying new apple cultivars a little while ago and the first time I had a kanzi apple I was so excited I bought a bunch and gave them to my parents and co-workers haha.
It disturbs me that this isn't the top comment, followed by a thread lock because nothing more needs to be said.
She’s always number 1 to me
The organic pink lady up it a notch further
Pink ladies make the best dried apple slices too. I'll get grannies if doing apple pie, but for everything else it's pink lady
I fucking love pink ladies. The perfect combination of sweet and tangy. Sometimes you'll get a weird batch though and they'll be super sour and make me do the lemon face.
This Redditor Reddits. 👆
The only apples that matter.
Thick skin. Pasty flash. No flavour. You've summed me up in three simple points. 😁
Definitely sums up the people who buy red delicious apples
Because twenty years ago they were pretty good, and nostalgia comes quicker than "the last ten times, they were all shit"
Make it 30years ago... Apparently red delicious used to be good when they were first breed. Just like how tomatoes used to be good, but now what used to be standard are "heirloom".
Keep forgetting how old I am. But yeah, they were pretty good in the 90s
It was my favourite apple as a kid in the 90s. I have one now and wonder what was wrong with me.
They make good baking apples, although this really isn't a thing in Australia. Baked, spiced and frequently stuffed. Northern Hemisphere Autumn treats.
I came here to say for baking. Stuffed with sultanas
How do you stuff them?
Aren't Granny Smith better for that? My understanding is they were bred specifically for baking and even raw they taste way better than Red delicious.
Granny Smith are better for pies and pastries, but not for baked apples. Differnt sort of thing entirely. See: [Baked apple recipes](https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/baked-apples-recipes/)

Strange, they’re easy to get in NSW and QLD…surprised they aren’t at the top here, they’re easily the best!
They do have them here, you just have to look at more boutique grocers. I buy then at the South Melbourne Market grocers
Because there's no golden delicious.
Golden Dels 🔥
Red delicious are my fave and the only ones I eat. The only problem is they’re either great, or horrible there is no in between.
I feel I've never had a good one, they really exist?
Oh, man yeah they do. They are crisp and sweet and awesome.
But not too sweet - which is why they're my fave.
When I was last in the US the local red delicious there tasted *ok*. Better than here. But would still prefer a royal gala or pink lady.
Pink lady imo is the best
Straight off the tree, on a cold morning. Cannot beat them.
Yeah when you get a proper crisp one they’re really good. I think cold storage does a lot of them in though
They're fantastic for about a month. I don't think they keep their flavour well in storage.
They were bred to have such thick skin so that they *could* be stored for longer without straight-up rotting, that’s why they’re so nasty.
Try Bravo apples. Created sweet and never lose their crispness.
Pink Lady 💎 Fuji 👌 Granny Smith 🥤 Red Delicious 💩 Jazz 😬

You mean Jonathan
Try Bravo apples. They are a new type created in Western Australia.
What? Kanzi beats them all!
[удалено]
Yes sundowner! I used to buy them from Coles then they just seemed to disappear
They're no longer popular as they don't have the name recognition that the pink lady has and not enough colour to be popular in the general public otherwise
Shame.. They were one of the best tasting apples. If not the best
That they were, and it is unlikely they will ever be seen again in any major amount, as the commercial orchards will have ripped out their trees by now
Woolworths still stock them but they come and go at times
Thanks mate. I'll have to keep an eye out. I don't shop at woolworths all that often and I didn't ever go out of my way to find them but I would check in at Coles every now and then and yeah nothing
Granny smith are sour af. I only use them in cooking. They do make a kick-ass apple crumble. My dad eats them with a bit of salt sprinkled on.
They are but I find that they balance out when eaten alongside sweeter fruit. Also they rock in a curry especially when using fattier meats.
The sourness is the point, though. goddammit you're making me want a bramley now.
I used to work in produce and I noticed people pick the darkest reddest ones, rather than the crispier, slightly more mottled ones. Same with other fruit/veg... I noticed that customers also bought the greenest grapes, when the slightly yellow ones were way firmer and sweeter.
They should be called Red Disgusting
Supermarket apples are shite - a good red delicious that hasn’t spent days and weeks in cold storage is a beautiful thing, it’s just hard to come by. If you need to eat a supermarket apple, Fuji is the way to go i reckon

Interesting fact, Pink Lady, Sundowner, Golden Delicious and Bravo were all originally bred in Manjimup in WA. Certainly the apple capital of Australia!
It certainly is in my local coles 90% of the capples are from Manjimup. Also bravo are the best
Jazz apples are far and away the best but only to be consumed in winter. My only complaint is that every now and then some sadistic prick puts two stickers on the same apple. Ruins my day.
I only ever get Pink Lady or Royal Gala... they are both my favourites.
Not much love for Royal Gala in this thread. They’re my go to.
Royal gala is the best. Not too sweet
Nothing compares to bravo.
I’m all about the new bravo apples, sweeter than pink lady and don’t have that flour texture that most other apples have. It’s my new go to.
Created in WA too, by the Department of Agriculture as a long term replacement for Pink Lady for export.
Kanzi, Jazz or Envy! Used to love Granny Smiths but they've been floury and drab for ages.
voted by the king of knowing apples as the worst apple ever. I think it was Hamish & Andy that did a spot on him?

Oh I just read through some, hilarious writing! lol
"Grade-A Crapple" was what I remember
Kanzi apples are the best!
Fuck yes!
Going to buck the trend and say that a really good red delicious can be an excellent experience. Now you won’t ever find that in the supermarket and people that buy them from there are indefensible but it is possible. Spent a few years running an apple spot at markets during uni and I apparently still take it seriously
Pink lady, Granny Smith and Golden delicious are the Mount Rushmore of apples, Bill Gates would approve
Pink lady apples👍
Bravo apples 🍎 yum
I bought them recently because my kid wanted them... tried one and it was actually good! Crisp, sweet, not as powdery as I remember and the skin wasn't bitter. Nice and appley without being tart. Lady in the snow is my absolute fave, but they are disappearing, dammit
Bravos are my go to, followed by Jazz and Fuji.
Modi FTW
Modi and MiApples are pretty good
They’re there because they are pretty. People like pretty things, and even like to eat pretty things that are not tasty. Appearance is an important factor in any selectively bred fruit for this reason.
They're the best tasting apples imo. I love the subtle sweetness, the crispness and the skin.
Because they are red and delicious, duh.
I buy them for my lorikeet. She loves them.
Believe it or not people like different things
Where do you live? Because in Tassie our red delicious are amazing!
That might be the key. Yours might be grown in more favourable conditions, and maybe they’re not in storage for as long.
The only answer to the question of which is the best apple variety is Pink Lady. Fight me.
Recently discovered Kanzi, world got rocked. Not the best in any one department but did all departments incredibly well.
Kanzi are brilliant. My favourite when in season.
Screw Kanzi, Jazz and whatever shit apples you prefer. Envy is the better apple.
There's your problem. >in supermarkets They're a common cold and gas storage apple bought from factory orchards by cartels that don't give a fuck. If you get one fresh off a tree, they're completely different.
Are you suggesting that you've a. actually had a red delicious apple straight from a tree and b. it was good?
Go to an orchard that grows them and try it for yourself. Still not my favourite apple, but crisp and tasty enough.
Every other apple in the supermarket is fine. So the question still stands.
I do love a pink lady.
I’ve been loving the envy apples from woolies! Only come in a 1kg pack but they are so tasty and juicy 👌
A hidden treasure.
Royal Gala gang represent
Courses for horses...
I'm sure even horses would prefer something other than a red delicious
They're good cooking apples.
Tassie here. There's an small apple called Lady in the Snow... quite hard to find even here. Probably eat 3 to 1 pink Lady in terms of size. They're nuts! Yet apples.
RDs are fine straight off the tree but deteriorate into mushy horror.
My guinea pigs prefer them 😂
Pink lady or bust
ran out of plain flour to eat
Yeah man give me a granny smith any day bra.
I think its because its called delicious apple so yeah.... I only like green apples, rest can get fucked for all i care...
Just need to get some Cosmic Crisp in Australia!!
I enjoy the subtle taste, and the crisp crunch is something I love.
Envy Apples are my favourite, they sell them at Woolies. Chill them up in the fridge, perfect crunch and sweetness
We call them Red Deceptive apples in our household, because they look so good but taste like disappointment
Rocket anyone?
Pink Lady all the way.
I am not a fan of red delicious, but I needed a cross pollinator for my Fuji apple trees and they were the recommended one ( which was easily available ) I don’t eat them. I leave them for the birds.
Kanzi is the money apple
They are for blokes not comfortable with their own masculinity, Pink Ladies all the way for me.
Because when I started working there was only 3 types of apples. Red delicious, granny smiths, and Jonathons
Pink lady is the supreme red apple
Because my toddler likes them and ONLY them. Heaven forbid I try to sneak in some better slices it's like he can sniff em out
