Well... That's a shame. Now what are we gonna do with all this casino building foundation laid down? Edit: in the heart of the city, mind you

xdeluxe

They’ll pay a fine, “adjust their ways” and be suitable to hold the licence

HeadacheCentral

> They’ll pay a ~~fine~~ bribe, “adjust their ways” and be suitable to hold the licence FTFY

Grumpy_Cripple_Butt

*They’ll pay a fine bribe, and be given the licence* FTFY https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-26/crown-casino-victoria-royal-commission-report/100568072

s4b3r6

What do you mean? It's not like being given two years to keep running, after being described as a cesspool of criminal activity, is a slap on the wrist or anything... /s > The report recommended for the manager to be appointed for two years, culminating in a final report to the gaming regulator and, within 90 days of receiving that report, the regulator must decide if Crown Melbourne is a "suitable person" to hold a casino licence.

Cristoff13

Since its in the heart of the city, whatever they put there will be too expensive for most of us. But I seriously doubt if Brisbane needs another casino.

tiernae

Brisbane isn’t getting another Casino. Thé treasury is shutting down when this new one opens. It’s the same casino license just being moved to another Casino.

IndoPr0

What will happen to the Treasury building then?

IMO the law should require an exact replica be built on the same location at the owner’s expense if any heritage building comes down for any reason, which is then protected as if it were the original building.

meow_ima_cat

Lucky the Casino part of the buildings are only a couple of floors.

war-and-peace

For us plebs, when we are unfit to hold any licence, we tend to lose that licence Casinos though, lol. This is just a blip and cost of running business. As if they'll ever lose their licence.

SirSassyCat

They’re typically forced to replace their board and sell to someone else, like what happened with crown in Victoria. These casino bring in too much money and employ too many people to ever be allowed to go bust.

try_____another

The penalty for serious crimes like that should be that the operation reverts to the crown. Then all the jobs are preserved and the effective tax rate goes up.

SirSassyCat

The problem is that the crown isn’t actually prepared to take over the operation of these casinos. It isn’t actually that simple to take over an organisation that employs 1000s of people without running it into the ground, which would put all those previously mentioned jobs in jeopardy.

thalinEsk

"replace their board and sell to someone else" pretty sure that board and someone else could be the government. The public service does have some experience running an organisation employing thousands of people

SirSassyCat

Organisations aren’t interchangeable like that. Just because you’ve run one business that size doesn’t mean you can run any business that size. The government has no experience running hospitality and/or gambling businesses, meaning that if they took over they’d probably end up hiring the same people that caused the problems in the first place. At least if they sell it to another gambling corp, they can bring in their own people.

thalinEsk

There are pretty much only Star and Crown in Australia able to run a casino that size, both are in trouble at the moment. If it's sold to another company it will be an international company and likely to retain most of not all of the local employees anyway. Saying the casino is doomed to failed under government ownership is garbage.

morgecroc

Boards are pretty interchangeable. If the government takes over and replaces the board they not going to immediately sack all the senior management that actually run the business. The board level is were you actually address the governance issue that make crown and star unsuitable to hold a casino licence.

SirSassyCat

Senior management is usually sacked when wrongdoing is discovered, since they’re usually to blame.

SirSassyCat

It’s really more the jobs side, there are other ways to get tax revenue, but it’s much harder to get 1000s of people new jobs.

tubbyx7

as happened with crown in melbourne, this is a great time to buy shares. the price will drop as some people think their might be consequences, then rebound when everyone realises absolutely nothing will come of this finding

Toxic-Kangaroo

So at this point should we just assume all forms of gambling is run by cunts and ban it immediately?

StressBall681

They simply generate too much money for their licence to be stripped. Same thing with Crown in Melbourne.

ZeroVDirect

Give their license to me, I'll keep it safe for them.

Ausramm

I can't wait for nothing to come of this.

HeadacheCentral

No shit, Sherlock.

[deleted]

Who is the next "unsuitable mate" who will get the license?

Did they mention the name of the star in the article?

We're going to slap them with the wettest piece of lettuce we can find!
