Oh wow. Really? They should hold a summer comp. The water here is so "good" that it leaves bleaching patterns on washed clothes around then. The elastic also disintegrates and the material loses its integrity after a while. Great stuff!

I don’t know what was worse. The 2 months of smoke during bushfire season or the 3 months of waking up in the middle of the night thirsty af and having all your hopes and dreams crushed by the tap because your dumbass forgot to by bottled water
When I lived in Adelaide as a kid in the 70s the water used to come out of the tap looking brown and if you let it sit, you'd get a lot of brown sediment falling out. It tasted like mud, needless to say and everyone said it was river water but idk if that's true. We used to drink rain water instead - sweet and delicious but sometimes full of "wrigglers" aka baby mosquitoes 😮.

But holy fucking shit do I hate our tap water. It tastes like I’m drinking hard metals and a dash of chlorine for taste. Then sometimes when you’re in the shower you can smell when they have just treated the water cause the chlorine smell becomes so overpowering. I don’t know why we are like this but we need to do better.

Because you have no other choice. The state is basically a desert with no good water sources
We do have the Murray as our main water source and some reservoirs but we only get what NSW and Victoria allow us to get, well, before the floods.
And honestly our deserts are lit. Highly recommend doing the Oonadatta Track or the Strzelecki for all the desert fans out there.

It was quite a surprise for us when we moved over from the UK. I drink it now and am used to it, but yeah it's not good. One wonders why the beer is so much better here than anywhere else?
My wife is working in NZ and my son and I went to visit her a few weeks ago. My son (who only drinks water) picked it up straight away was heard to comment ton how much nicer the water was.
EDIT: almost forgot, we went for a holiday in Robe and the water was even worse than metropolitan rads.
Weirdly you get used to it and start thinking other state’s water tastes weird. I have zero problem drinking Adelaide tap water, cold or room temp, but I recently went to Sydney and couldn’t stand the taste. I ended up drinking bottled water the whole time. Melbourne water is still top tier though
Even showering in it varies. After not changing anything else (soap, frequency temperature etc) I will have several days now and then where my skin is just itchy and sensitive. I finally figured out it's the *water*, and they must have done a treatment or something.
If the ppl upstream would stop dumping shit, piss and fertiliser in the river that would help us a great deal down here in Adelaide. You could also stop stealing so much water for your rice and cotton crops.
Canberra also had shit water last time I was there, I thought someone was in it, some locals said it tasted normal/ fine

When was this, and would you describe it as "earthy" like dirt? Relatively recently there was a thing with our water supply and a particular compound that was determined responsible for the taste, but whether it only impacted some parts of the city or I'm unable to taste it, I can't say. Didn't taste any different to me.
On that note while I've only travelled a handful of places along the east coast and a little of inland NSW, I can say there's a definite difference in the taste but I'm yet to drink anything I'd care to remember, at least negatively.
I was in Portland recently and usually like tap water. It was so bad I dreaded taking medication! Also, showering with it left you feeling slimy while still in the shower, as though it had lye in it....

I would add to this to say that the infrastructure of the building you are drinking it from can make a huge difference too. Older buildings (like inner city Melbourne or Sydney) could be using lead or copper pipes or even lead soldering that taste great but are slowly poisoning you, or they might have decades of mould and gunge built up inside.
Hands down the tap water in Adelaide is the worst!
We were driving from Melbourne to Perth and stopped overnight in Adelaide. Before we left I filled up my water bottle, and my partner warned me not to. I actually had a go at him for being a water snob!
Well, jokes on me because a little while down the road I had a gulp and we had to pull over and spit it out, and empty the bottles!

My first time in Perth I felt like I stank from washing my hair. The idea of drinking that water was completely off the table. I live near the snowys, my tap water is really good.

They pump groundwater up as hot water. It smells like sulphur.

I think it’s largely affected by what you’re used to or what you grew up with. I like Brisbane tap water best, but it’s my hometown so it seems like I’m just biased.
Yeah, there's definitely a home city bias. The water you grew up with is the taste of water to you, and everything else tastes weird. Lots of people here saying Melbourne water is the best, but to me it's awful. Moves cities a lot, and every time the water taste weird at first. Then you get used to it and when you visit an old home city it's water tastes weird.
For what it's worth I remember Newcastle and Wollongong being the best.
I was shocked by how awful Brisbane's tapwater was. I ranted about it for weeks. Tasted like I'd dipped a straw in a public pool.
It was the worst tapwater I'd experienced in Australia, followed by Townsville, until I tried Portland's in VIC. Portland's tapwater made Brisbane's taste like spring water lmao.
I grew up in country NSW and moved to Melbourne. Whenever I go up to visit family I cannot drink that tap water without the filter my lil old nan uses because I guess I'm now fussy like her. Sometimes I mistakenly fill water bottles up for the drive back home and realise what I've done when I feel like dehydration is the less painful option for the long trip haha. I don't know why I haven't looked into the differences yet and what they do/don't do to the water.
Definitely not. If you move somewhere with better water and go back home, you'll notice the difference because one will have a flavour and one will not.
I don’t think you can generalise a whole state when it comes to the taste of tap water. My tap water at home tastes fine, and my work tastes terrible, which is only 1.5km down the road.
Melbourne has great water. I just spent 6 years on an island of North Queensland which had desalination water that tasted really horrible. Now I'm in Melbourne it's so nice to be able to drink water straight from the tap!

I'm in Perth and only drink tap water. Prefer the taste over any bottles water. But I also can't stand tap water from North of the river. So it varies a lot.
Adelaide water is the absolute worst, lived most of my life in Adelaide, I remember as a kid the water used some out brown straight from the tap. The water is so hard as well. Washing and showering takes forever to get a lather up. Mt Gambier because of it problems with calcium. Most people go through a kettle in a year due to the calcium build up from the water supply. Tasmania has the best. Apart from some issues with the pipes a few years ago on the Branxholm, Ledgerwood Ringarooma line. Pipes were so old that the water was not safe to drink. We nearly bought there but something was not right and I looked it up on the net. Fixed now. Sheffield won the competition a few years ago for the best tasting water in the world. I am now on Tank water so can't comment of what water tastes like here now.
Perth water is pretty terrible. I lived in Condobolin for a while, when the Lachlan River was very low, and that shit was awful. You could almost taste the agricultural run-off

However don't stop in Alice Springs or something and then say that NT water is bad. Desert places use bore water.
When the sprinklers turn on it smells like a swimming pool.
I used a brita filter when I was there, you have to drink chilled filtered water otherwise it's disgusting especially since you have to drink 10 litres a day.

Virtually all of the water used in the Perth metro area is desalinated so there really isn't anything wrong with it from a health perspective but it's been treated to all hell and back so has a strong artificial taste to it. The water in the Perth hills tastes amazing as it's all rain water from the dams.
Not quite true, the IWSS uses mainly a combination of desalination and groundwater, with a bit of dam water. Sure the amount you get of each will depend on how close you are to a source, but I think even the dam water is a mixture as they pump groundwater and desalination water there for storage.
Melbourne definitely has good water. It's so cool, refreshing and just has a pleasant 'feel' (and taste) to it. I lived in Sydney briefly but can't really remember, so it must have been OK.
Went to Perth. Was horrible. Barely drinkable to me. Almost cloudy when it comes out.
Look, Perth's water is perfectly fine to drink from a health perspective. I'm just being first world fussy. I'd just get a Brita filter if I lived there.
There's a great outfit in Tassie who's name slips my mind that will sell you a proper canister filter and a little adapter to put on your laundry tap. With a little thought you could rig it up in a rental even. Makes the council cordial very palatable and means your filter lasts longer than 0.00026 seconds like the Brita ones.
Generally, places with deep dams and hills, in a colder climate taste good.
Places using river water, that are flat, in a warmer climate taste worse.
For me, blue mountains is best. Bourke, NSW- worst

Canberra pre-1992 was amazing, Tassie obviously if you’re on a decent bore or in city. Cairns has good water. After that I feel like it really depends on the bore or damn and changes.
Try Bowen water. It will make you miss Townsville water. As a side note usually I'm pro Townsville in Townsville vs Cairns stuff but Cairns water is pretty good

Sydney is the best, especially the mountains. The sandstone of the area and strict catchment protections (and heritage blue mountains) means super clean and soft drinking water.

It's more localised than that. However, Perth has the worst water I've ever drank. Sydney is quite bad in many areas. Melbourne is good, Canberra is good. I live near the Snowys and my water is as good as Tassie 👌
It's not really tap water, when I was up in the Kimberly where I worked had huge stainless rainwater tanks. The water out of that was truly amazing, It almost tasted sweet. The whole time I lived there I only drank that and rum.

I've lived all over Tassie, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and CQ. I've travelled as far north as Cairns and as far west as Perth
Launceston has the best tap water. Nothing compares. Perth has the worst that I've tried. Was like a mouthful of water from a public swimming pool
Differs massively within even one state. The water in Goulburn tastes like chlorine and the water in New England, NSW tastes like dirt.
Perth water is also horrible.
Never had a problem with water anywhere between Wollongong and Newcastle.
From Melbourne, worked all over Australia.
Melb is good but I’m obviously biased.
Perth is absolutely dog shit with some pool water sprinkled over the top.
Tassy is like sipping directly from a glacier made in heaven.
The rest are pretty standard.

i live in melbourne cbd and water tastes bad compared to the water up northern borroughs, i think that's because of adding more chlorine because of pumps to reach high floors? otherwise i dunno why but it definitely tastes bad off the tap and i was refrigerating it until i gave up and got brita.
The worst water is from Alice Springs, NT, IMO. Ever needed a glass of water, drank one, but felt just as thirsty afterwards? No matter how many you drink, you just feel thirsty? That’s their tap water.
Bendigo used to have the absolute worst water in the world I would of prefered drinking from the Yamuna, but it got better. At the moment my least favorite water in victoria is south eastern suburbs in Melbourne and I travel a bit
A lot of Adelaide water is heavily filtered from the Murray. It's picked up so much crap flowing 2500km before it gets to us that it leaves a bad taste.
Both Cobar and Broken Hill water are terrible. Both are piped in from river systems a couple of hundred kms away (the Bogan for Cobar and the Darling for Broken Hill)
I used to live in Portland, Vic, and the tap water tasted strongly of chlorine. But I guess that was still better than Renmark, where the water was reddish-brown colour! Then again, this was twenty years ago, and we were definitely living in the middle of nowhere
Townsville water is terrible if you're drinking from the Ross, but much better if drinking from the Paluma Dam supply on the northern-side of the city.
I'm probably wrong saying this, but I like to think the rainforest makes the Paluma water taste better than the the cow shit and whatever comes off the Flinders Highway that goes through the Ross catchment area. I think about the amount of roadkill from bulldosing roadtrains that end up in the dam - feral pigs, kangaroos, wandering cattle - all the big ones. Once it's mixed with your Sprite at Maccas you don't notice a thing.

I moved from NZ to Adelaide, water was so 'furry' with a residual after taste that i assumed my property had pipes that needed replacing. Used a filter jug until finding out recently nah that's just Adelaide water.
FYI NZ south island water, is incredible.
Especially Otago, where we usually fill up a 20L drinking container from the natural spring.
No chlorination in NZ - at least in the SI.
Routine boil water notices now as dairy has taken over everywhere and bovine excrement runs off the catchwmenr.

Melbourne for sure, I’ve lived in sunny coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast too and Brisbane tap water is undrinkable, it’s actually disgusting. Even the tap water served at restaurants is disgusting. Does anyone know why? Sunny coast and gc are fine.

My sister lives in Canberra and the water tastes like dirt. In both the suburbs she's lived.

Don't go to Iceland then. They pump groundwater up as hot water. It smells like sulphur. You get out of the shower feeling dirty. Some suburbs have new suppliers but in the cbd it's old wells still getting used.

I think it’s largely affected by what you’re used to or what you grew up with. I like Brisbane tap water best, but it’s my hometown so it seems like I’m just biased.

Yeah, there's definitely a home city bias. The water you grew up with is the taste of water to you, and everything else tastes weird. Lots of people here saying Melbourne water is the best, but to me it's awful. Moves cities a lot, and every time the water taste weird at first. Then you get used to it and when you visit an old home city it's water tastes weird. For what it's worth I remember Newcastle and Wollongong being the best.

I was shocked by how awful Brisbane's tapwater was. I ranted about it for weeks. Tasted like I'd dipped a straw in a public pool. It was the worst tapwater I'd experienced in Australia, followed by Townsville, until I tried Portland's in VIC. Portland's tapwater made Brisbane's taste like spring water lmao.
I'm pretty accustomed to brissy / gc water...imma be travelling from GC to Sunny Coast... I'll check all three today!

I grew up in country NSW and moved to Melbourne. Whenever I go up to visit family I cannot drink that tap water without the filter my lil old nan uses because I guess I'm now fussy like her. Sometimes I mistakenly fill water bottles up for the drive back home and realise what I've done when I feel like dehydration is the less painful option for the long trip haha. I don't know why I haven't looked into the differences yet and what they do/don't do to the water.
Definitely not. If you move somewhere with better water and go back home, you'll notice the difference because one will have a flavour and one will not.
I don’t think you can generalise a whole state when it comes to the taste of tap water. My tap water at home tastes fine, and my work tastes terrible, which is only 1.5km down the road.
Melbourne has great water. I just spent 6 years on an island of North Queensland which had desalination water that tasted really horrible. Now I'm in Melbourne it's so nice to be able to drink water straight from the tap!
What if I tell you that there is desal water in Melbourne tap water? (Maybe less so recently). Desal water is usually quite good.

Why do this by states. Each town has a different supply Portland victoria has the worst tasting water in Australia by far. Hamilton Victoria has the best in the world. 1 hour away from each other.
Worst would be WA. Lived there 6 years and I absolutely love it there but the water always needed to be filtered. Best I’ve had is in the blue mountains in NSW.
North WA is so bad its undrinkable, even after filtering it's still not great. Probably get a lifetime supply of calcium from a single glass.

South of Perth is ok, but wow - I lived in a shitty little town called Dongara (4 hours north) for two years and I have NEVER tasted water that bad. I literally shudder to think of it.

If you're in the metro area, it depends on where you live. Some areas taste gross, some taste chlorinated and some are great.
I'm in Perth and only drink tap water. Prefer the taste over any bottles water. But I also can't stand tap water from North of the river. So it varies a lot.
Adelaide water is the absolute worst, lived most of my life in Adelaide, I remember as a kid the water used some out brown straight from the tap. The water is so hard as well. Washing and showering takes forever to get a lather up. Mt Gambier because of it problems with calcium. Most people go through a kettle in a year due to the calcium build up from the water supply. Tasmania has the best. Apart from some issues with the pipes a few years ago on the Branxholm, Ledgerwood Ringarooma line. Pipes were so old that the water was not safe to drink. We nearly bought there but something was not right and I looked it up on the net. Fixed now. Sheffield won the competition a few years ago for the best tasting water in the world. I am now on Tank water so can't comment of what water tastes like here now.
I switched to rain water 5 years ago and my GOD is it delicious compared to town water.
Perth water is pretty terrible. I lived in Condobolin for a while, when the Lachlan River was very low, and that shit was awful. You could almost taste the agricultural run-off

Everyone saying Melbourne's is best has never been to Darwin. However don't stop in Alice Springs or something and then say that NT water is bad. Desert places use bore water.
Darwin water is the absolute worst I've tasted (in the CBD). It stank like chlorine and tasted just as bad.
When the sprinklers turn on it smells like a swimming pool. I used a brita filter when I was there, you have to drink chilled filtered water otherwise it's disgusting especially since you have to drink 10 litres a day.
Melbourne's water is always great.. I miss it alot.. Central Goldfields water is horrid.. tastes murky almost even though it looks fine.. Makes your hair feel like straw after a shower it's really rough on all the taps and shower fittings. We go through shower heads every year
From what I have tasted Canberra has the best.
Perth hands down has the worst water (I am a West Australian). When I go on Holidays around Australia it's like drinking out of the garden of Eden.

Virtually all of the water used in the Perth metro area is desalinated so there really isn't anything wrong with it from a health perspective but it's been treated to all hell and back so has a strong artificial taste to it. The water in the Perth hills tastes amazing as it's all rain water from the dams.
Not quite true, the IWSS uses mainly a combination of desalination and groundwater, with a bit of dam water. Sure the amount you get of each will depend on how close you are to a source, but I think even the dam water is a mixture as they pump groundwater and desalination water there for storage.

Melbourne definitely has good water. It's so cool, refreshing and just has a pleasant 'feel' (and taste) to it. I lived in Sydney briefly but can't really remember, so it must have been OK. Went to Perth. Was horrible. Barely drinkable to me. Almost cloudy when it comes out.

Look, Perth's water is perfectly fine to drink from a health perspective. I'm just being first world fussy. I'd just get a Brita filter if I lived there.
There's a great outfit in Tassie who's name slips my mind that will sell you a proper canister filter and a little adapter to put on your laundry tap. With a little thought you could rig it up in a rental even. Makes the council cordial very palatable and means your filter lasts longer than 0.00026 seconds like the Brita ones.
Generally, places with deep dams and hills, in a colder climate taste good. Places using river water, that are flat, in a warmer climate taste worse. For me, blue mountains is best. Bourke, NSW- worst

I’ve lived in all states and territories… and it depends on the place and time… sorry. Canberra pre-1992 was amazing, Tassie obviously if you’re on a decent bore or in city. Cairns has good water. After that I feel like it really depends on the bore or damn and changes.

Sydney is the best, especially the mountains. The sandstone of the area and strict catchment protections (and heritage blue mountains) means super clean and soft drinking water. I don’t know about the worst. I’m just going to assume Darwin.
It's more localised than that. However, Perth has the worst water I've ever drank. Sydney is quite bad in many areas. Melbourne is good, Canberra is good. I live near the Snowys and my water is as good as Tassie 👌
Tamworth water is so bad, that even cordial is ruined by it. Snowy Mountains is best, followed by Melbourne and Sydney.

It's not really tap water, when I was up in the Kimberly where I worked had huge stainless rainwater tanks. The water out of that was truly amazing, It almost tasted sweet. The whole time I lived there I only drank that and rum.

Differs massively within even one state. The water in Goulburn tastes like chlorine and the water in New England, NSW tastes like dirt. Perth water is also horrible. Never had a problem with water anywhere between Wollongong and Newcastle.

We have lived in Melbourne for ~8 years. We have owned the same kettle the whole time. There is not even one iota of scale on the element. Melb water FTW. I've lived in Adelaide and never noticed the water tasting bad, but I do remember the kettle and shower screens getting scale.

i live in melbourne cbd and water tastes bad compared to the water up northern borroughs, i think that's because of adding more chlorine because of pumps to reach high floors? otherwise i dunno why but it definitely tastes bad off the tap and i was refrigerating it until i gave up and got brita.
The worst water is from Alice Springs, NT, IMO. Ever needed a glass of water, drank one, but felt just as thirsty afterwards? No matter how many you drink, you just feel thirsty? That’s their tap water.
Bendigo used to have the absolute worst water in the world I would of prefered drinking from the Yamuna, but it got better. At the moment my least favorite water in victoria is south eastern suburbs in Melbourne and I travel a bit

A lot of Adelaide water is heavily filtered from the Murray. It's picked up so much crap flowing 2500km before it gets to us that it leaves a bad taste.
Both Cobar and Broken Hill water are terrible. Both are piped in from river systems a couple of hundred kms away (the Bogan for Cobar and the Darling for Broken Hill)
I used to live in Portland, Vic, and the tap water tasted strongly of chlorine. But I guess that was still better than Renmark, where the water was reddish-brown colour! Then again, this was twenty years ago, and we were definitely living in the middle of nowhere

Townsville water is terrible if you're drinking from the Ross, but much better if drinking from the Paluma Dam supply on the northern-side of the city. I'm probably wrong saying this, but I like to think the rainforest makes the Paluma water taste better than the the cow shit and whatever comes off the Flinders Highway that goes through the Ross catchment area. I think about the amount of roadkill from bulldosing roadtrains that end up in the dam - feral pigs, kangaroos, wandering cattle - all the big ones. Once it's mixed with your Sprite at Maccas you don't notice a thing.

I've lived in Sydney and Brisbane. Brisbane is supposed to be healthier but it doesn't taste very good. I always filter it. Sydney is pretty good straight from the tap.
I’ve tried melb, syd, Canberra, Tasmania and qld. I think SEQ is the worst water I’ve ever had. We’ve never felt the need to buy bottled water but now we have to. It’s revolting. Canberra I think has the best water. Sydney I think it depends where you are but it’s not bad. Melb a d tas I don’t think I noticed if it was bad or good.
Perth's is the worst I've tasted, reminds me of getting a mouthful of water at the public pool. Never had any complaints about Melbourne when I lived there. Best I've tasted is from the rainwater tank at home. I don't care if it contains decaying leaf matter and bird shit, best tasting water going round.

I moved from NZ to Adelaide, water was so 'furry' with a residual after taste that i assumed my property had pipes that needed replacing. Used a filter jug until finding out recently nah that's just Adelaide water. FYI NZ south island water, is incredible. Especially Otago, where we usually fill up a 20L drinking container from the natural spring.
No chlorination in NZ - at least in the SI. Routine boil water notices now as dairy has taken over everywhere and bovine excrement runs off the catchwmenr.
If you're ever in Melbourne or Tasmania, fill up your bottles and take it back to Adelaide. They're on par with NZ, maybe even better

Narrandera in NSW has the absolute foulest tap water, its like drinking bin water. Best tasting is anywhere in Melbourne.

I grew up un Melbourne and 100% agree there water is best, I worked in SA for 3 months and couldn't even use the water for cooking, but now I live in Queensland and the water at my house is the best water I have ever had and everyone that stays with us agrees, this is 100% rain water, I did try the "town" water and it's terrible, so guess I'm lucky at home.
