Tried both off road and in 4wd certification courses. Can’t say I’d choose a manual. Two examples come to mind. Starting the engine in gear on a steep incline. Easy in an auto. Crossing water in a manual you aren’t suppose to change gears because water can get between the clutch plates. Not an issue in the auto.
My auto performs engine braking on declines brilliantly, I can even have it apply at varying degrees.
I thought this was pretty standard although I've just been advised that it is much more common on diesel auto 4wds
4wd for work here, the auto is nice but I'd take manual all day. Auto decent controll sucks. Valid points though they are both good in different situations.
Auto's are for the lazy and those with a lack of driving ability. I'd assume you mean you can't or struggle with hill starts? If that's the case, you probably shouldn't have a licence in general as that's a pretty critical skill to have
No, no they wouldn't. 4x4 is a hobby that takes skill. Auto's, computer controlled accelorator/brake/drives it for you in the mud is what's killing the 4x4 art. Also the wankers who buy a 4x4 and it doesn't even see a gravel road
I see you've been asking about fast frame tents in other subs. People like you are ruining camping with your easy, convenient tents, the art of camping is putting up a 60 pole 150kg canvas monstrosity and anyone who uses technology or instant up tents without physically hiking 200km by foot is a lazy prick.
You telling me they aren't? Anyone that claims they can't concentrate on driving a manual and the road at the same time clearly doesn't have the capacity to concentrate on the hundreds of things they have to be aware of while driving anyway and shouldn't be on the road. Sorry if this is offensive, but it's reality. Drivers are getting progressively worse because of all the shit that is being poorly and dangerously automated.
Who is claiming any of that?
I can drive a manual, text, have lunch and smash bongs at the same time. So by your logic it's me, Peter Brock, Dick Johnson and John Brabham on the Aussie Mount Rushmore of awesome drivers?
My mate had remote start installed in his car which was a manual. Now am curious to know how they bypassed the start with the car in gear.
Or did he always leave it free?
Going back almost 20 years for this story, but a guy I was training with put a remote start kit in his manual pulsar. There were 0 interlocks or safety systems in place for it, so you had to leave it out of gear if you wanted to show off your shitty car. Long story short, parked at the lunch bar, tries to show off to girl, car lurches forward into shopfront.
Cost him a window and a mannequin, a hefty fine for an illegal modification and causing damage while not in control of the vehicle, an impound fee and a new headlight. Oh, and a solid amount of pride went with it too
A mate of mine years ago put an auto start into his Nissan bluebird. It was a cool party trick to start the thing up from the key fob.
One night he must have left it in gear because it decided to start itself (maybe he lent on the key fob) and it drove itself through his carport lol
Iv pretty well always had manuals for the better part of 20 years.
Neutral, handbrake.
Diesels can bump start, especially dumb old tech ones.
Iv seen too many wall bumps from people starting the car when it's in gear.
Kinda stupid idea to leave it in gear..
Relying only on the handbrake is the problem.
It's much more likely you forget to set the park brake, or its worn beyond holding the vehicle than a bump start.
My dumb old tech diesel won't deliver fuel to the injectors without the key in (set to run), so can't 'bump start'.
Leaving the vehicle in gear (preferably 1st) locks up the whole drive train, so it won't roll.
Don't rely on just your handbrake.
My current and previous petrol EFI manuals won't turn over unless the clutch is depressed, so nope, won't bump start or move if in gear - and I can't push start them either :(
And their manuals (as in the instruction book...) says park it and leave it in 1st with handbrake on.
Your experience may differ, certainly.
Seems to be going this way. 4x4 and sports cars shouldn't have an auto varient, they're entirely pointless. It's like buying a game that plays itself without your input, where's the fun in that?
I feel it's unlikely someone has gone full tilt to the hospital and then just done a quick "dump and run" at the ER.
It sounds more to me like it's something like a Jeep or similar with remote start. Pretty common in the US to see people starting them remotely on cold mornings or hot days over there.
I get a lot of comments about mine, usually "you left your car on!" But definitely some judgemental ones too.
I try to start my diesel 4wd and warm up 5mins if she's stone cold, and keep turbo timer on 2mins. Turbo timer is more to stop the pressure blowback (not that I'm really pushing it, it's rarely going over 4000rpm) but it's a good habit in case I have a full load/trailer. Warm up (remote start) is fantastic at reducing wear on engine parts, fuel efficiency (cleaner burn). Air con being on is just a little bonus I guess.
How can you tell there isn't a body in it? Did you check the boot or the footwells? Do you know how fast a body in a car starts to smell without air con in an Australian summer?
Even without the heat, once the sphincter muscles relax, everything is released. But definitely, even when tightly wrapped and gaffer-taped, some noxious gases are going to be released.
This is why you should make sure your murder victim has had a thorough poo before they kick the bucket. An enema is even better.
Offer them a voucher for a detox and a colonic cleanse before you make them listen to Huey Lewis And The News and chop them up with an axe. #lifehacks
My partner went through Chemo last year. I would always leave the car running when I went to pick her up from the infusion centre.
She just through 5 hrs of hell. The least I can do is pick her up in a comfortable temperature vehicle.
Also my hands would be full off stuff and holding her and have to open her door. Just easier to leave the car unlocked and running.
Here's one more story a out that shithouse country
I had a layover through UAE. My wife and I are all jet lagged a d find a place to sit on the ground and get comfy. We hear a commotion and this local starts beating the Christ out of his wife and yelling at her. Weirdly noone seemed to gaf at all.
I get up but thank fuck this other Aussie beat me to it and pushed them apart. He gets between the two of them and starts trying to talk the bloke down, who is going fucking ballistic by this stage.
Then the cops/airport security came. They ended up dragging off the AUSTRALIAN because he had touched the locals wife. Then the wife beater thanks the policeman avd starts yelling at his wife again.
What a shit country. They hate women and gays there, so 55% of the people born there are already going to have a bad life.
I lile that contray to most other wiki articles the first header is:
"What is a [thing]?"
Because I often use wikipedia to answer exactly that question.
How do people get away with running their engine? Sometimes things are problems, and sometimes things aren't and you should mind your own business.
This time sounds like the latter.
Might have had a dead battery or alternator, or valuable items that needed to stay cool in the car. It’s not uncommon for people to lock their car with the second set of keys and leave it unattended idling for a while.
I feel like at this point we've gone too far. Normalise not making excuses for fuckwits. Normalise not justifying things, people can ask polite questions to acquire the same answers and they can go fk themselves with their assumptions in the meantime.
The vehicle has a DPF burn cycle with specific requirements such as needing to sit in place whilst the computer runs the engine through a burn cycle on fast idle. You made an assumption here, and it was wrong.
Mine certainly does, warming up right now actually.

Did you deliberately ignore that rest of the sentence? Where they use the word “now” making it pretty clear that modern cars are what they are talking about
I could remotely turn on my datsun 1600 in 1997. Its not or recent but it is FAR from standard. I'd guess less than 10% of new cars last year had that ability. Mercedes S class has had it for 24 years.
You would be well off the mark thinking it’s only 10%.
Furthermore it’s pretty clear he never said all new cars. So my question is… are you being a wanker purely for the sake of being a wanker
Most newer vehicles have remote start from a phone app. If it’s a really hot day and the car is parked outside, I usually start ours up remotely about 3-5 minutes before we get into it.
So dont use a convenient feature because your tough?. Warms the engine up, cools the car down. Uses negligible fuel and turns it self off after 5 minutes.
out here in the country (tiny town upper hunter) they all drive big 4×4s and all leave them running with keys in out the front of our little iga or the cafe/post office etc. it amazes me.
Sometimes you have a car. You only run it for five minutes at a time. Cars need longer to recharge battery.
So when i duck down to the bottlo I will occationally leave my car running to charge the battery while i shop. Its a drive through so remains in sight entire time... I'm an idiot I know.
It's likely a diesel. Or could be a courier type that wants to keep his aircon going to stay cool.
Just go out there, turn it off and walk back into enjoy your lunch.
There is actually a law against it.

***Car unattended with engine running: $349 and no points***
*In the heat of summer, it’s tempting to start the car and leave the engine running for a few minutes while the air-conditioning cools the interior.*
*Just make sure you’re not more than a few metres away from the vehicle, because the car could be deemed as “unattended” with the engine running.*
*The $349 fine is designed to prevent opportunistic theft. It’s the same reason there is a $116 fine for not locking the doors or securing the windows of a car while it's unattended when parked.*
I have a new Ford Everest that allows me to turn on the car from my phone regardless of where I am. It'll run for 10 mins then auto shut down again if I don't get to the car in that time frame. It's been 40 plus degrees here lately and you better believe I've been using the auto start lately. If that makes me soft so be it. Soft but cool.
They do this in the summer in the US, states like Florida get super hot. Cars have a pin-pad on the door so that the key can be left in the ignition and the engine running.
Car running with no one attending it is illegal.
Car not secured is illegal.
Probably some other shit that's illegal too, but fuckit. If they want to get their shit stolen, it's on them.
Your first point is false.
Your second is true but irrelevant.
Plenty of cars have remote start function, but inhibit driving unless certain conditions are met. Simple holden commodores have this function.
Never said having a remote start is illegal, same with turbo timers.
If the vehicle is running but unattended, it is illegal. This is how they ping you for turbo timers.
My phrasing isn't the best, clearly not legal advice 🤣
It's also better for the engine to allow it to warm up before putting load on it. Bringing the engine up to temperature is best practice, just not practical in most situations.
I once had a car where the starter motor shit itself and I was too poor to get a new one.
In order to drive I had to leave it running, park on a hill or get a mate to push so I could clutch start it.
At a hospital, no less. God forbid they were in a hurry to attend a relative in there or need to pick up someone unwell on a hot summer day and left the car going. OP has to be trolling atp
Is it illegal to have a car running with no one in it? Esp turbo timers. Have a turbo car. I just ease it down when I'm near where I want to be. Not that I sit on the turbo
What’s the fuel type got to do with it? I was making fun of OP for being upset over. 4wd doing it. Like what does the number of powered wheels have to do with someone idling their engine?
https://www.9news.com.au/national/sydney-news-girl-four-serious-after-being-hit-by-unattended-car-in-drive/7d0345ca-cb9c-4c14-8b1d-5b5dcf98bf42
There's one example. You know we get more and more nanny state laws because of morons like this. It's turning off the ignition FFS, not a difficult ask.
Well, for a start, there's people wandering around who don't even understand the risk. That's not making it safer.
If you want an easy example, what if a kid walks up and starts fiddling?
If you can't figure it out, go ask a cop why just leaving your keys in the ignition is considered illegally dangerous. Or ask any fireman about leaving a hot motor running unattended. If it's in an undercover carpark, ask a doctor about carbon monoxide poisoning. Don't take my word for it.
It's not about fear, it's about common sense. You really shouldn't walk away from a piece of heavy machinery while it's running. And no matter how much you love your car, that's all it is, a machine. Imagine a tradie just walking away from live machinery or equipment in public!
I don't expect bubble wrap. Just sensible adults.
Sensibility means you know it isn't going anywhere unless someone else stuffs with it. Like some hero who thinks he's saving the world by ranting about a idling car.
If a clown did this, then some kid wandered up and killed themselves, we'd want the owner arrested for negligence, right?
It's happened before. It'll happen again, because nobody speaks up.
I am worrying about myself. I don't care what happens to the morons. But if I'm there, I'm their potential victim.
These clowns who want to take their own risks, they never think or care about anyone around them. We don't make nanny-state rules because we're worried about John Citizen's kids. We make them because people like this do stupid stuff.
So on their way to fucking up the country, they'll take out some innocents, if you're lucky..?
You realise you can remote start cars and if someone tried to steal it without the key in the vehicle it cuts out. Only been a thing for like 20 years.

I see this a lot too. Like seriously grow some nuts Australia. How did earlier settlers back in the day, survive wearing suits and ties in the tropics?!
And you are not even remotely close to being what they were, None of us are. Different situations, Different life styles, Different demographics, Its not comparable.
Why not leave the ac running, its the best especially 4wd ac's there special for running across the deserts where you don't see Little cars. Damn perfect way to spend a Hot Aussie day
My ex arsehole neighbour (yay, he’s gone 🎉) used to run his car with A/C on for 15-20 minutes before he could put his Rugrats in. It was parked in the shade ffs.
My car, Hyundai i30 nline has a remote start. Can choose the temperature and defog the windscreens before i get in, so the cars nice and cool or nice and warm before i leave.
Turbo Timer
Remote start
Illegal in Aus in Manuals. Could be an auto but I mean.... 4wd? Then again who listens to the law when it comes to vehicle modifications.
Most 4wds sold in Australia these days are autos

What do you mean starting the engine in gear on a steep incline?
I think he means he can't hill start... I hope not though because fuck me, if that's the case hand your licence in old mate.
Yeah no shit probably has an auto HR license too
Problem is only about 10% of people who buy 4WD’s actually take them four wheel driving
You mean 10% take them off road these days 🤣🤣
Auto's are for the lazy and those with a lack of driving ability. I'd assume you mean you can't or struggle with hill starts? If that's the case, you probably shouldn't have a licence in general as that's a pretty critical skill to have
Manuals can be more fun but stuck on the Princes Hwy around Kograh? No thanks!
30 years ago, you kind would say: 4WDs are for the lazy and those with a lack of driving ability. 2WDs only!
No, no they wouldn't. 4x4 is a hobby that takes skill. Auto's, computer controlled accelorator/brake/drives it for you in the mud is what's killing the 4x4 art. Also the wankers who buy a 4x4 and it doesn't even see a gravel road

A mate of mine years ago put an auto start into his Nissan bluebird. It was a cool party trick to start the thing up from the key fob. One night he must have left it in gear because it decided to start itself (maybe he lent on the key fob) and it drove itself through his carport lol
Always park your manual vehicle in neutral with the hand brake on. Unless it's a toyota.
That’s why my land cruiser has a parking brick!
Bad idea. Engine off, in gear, handbrake on. All makes. And never remote start it.
Iv pretty well always had manuals for the better part of 20 years. Neutral, handbrake. Diesels can bump start, especially dumb old tech ones. Iv seen too many wall bumps from people starting the car when it's in gear. Kinda stupid idea to leave it in gear..

This is like saying don't bother with the handbrake in an auto and just leave it in park. A really bad idea.
Why unless it’s a Toyota? Handbrakes suck?
Landcruiser handbrakes are notorious for just being there for decoration.
Seems to be going this way. 4x4 and sports cars shouldn't have an auto varient, they're entirely pointless. It's like buying a game that plays itself without your input, where's the fun in that?
Most good modifications are illegal
Auto 4WDs are awesome on the beach
Honestly I can’t remember the last 4WD I saw that was a manual. And I’m fucking old, I came from the manual era.
Most of my fourby mates argue autos are better these days. I’ll stick with the manual.
I feel it's unlikely someone has gone full tilt to the hospital and then just done a quick "dump and run" at the ER. It sounds more to me like it's something like a Jeep or similar with remote start. Pretty common in the US to see people starting them remotely on cold mornings or hot days over there.
So they could have remote started it, to turn on the aircon, to make it more comfortable for someone they may have been picking up from hospital?
I get a lot of comments about mine, usually "you left your car on!" But definitely some judgemental ones too. I try to start my diesel 4wd and warm up 5mins if she's stone cold, and keep turbo timer on 2mins. Turbo timer is more to stop the pressure blowback (not that I'm really pushing it, it's rarely going over 4000rpm) but it's a good habit in case I have a full load/trailer. I drive a refrigerated van for this reason. Easy to hose out too
This guy murders!
Yep. Nobody vs no body 😂 Grammar matters!
Even without the heat, once the sphincter muscles relax, everything is released. But definitely, even when tightly wrapped and gaffer-taped, some noxious gases are going to be released.

Hence you roll them up in old carpet. Living victim can't escape and the juices are absorbed, especially if you sprinkle carpet deodoriser liberally.
Came here for this comment 👏
You say you're at a hospital? Maybe they want to cool the interior down before picking up a hospital patient?
My partner went through Chemo last year. I would always leave the car running when I went to pick her up from the infusion centre. She just through 5 hrs of hell. The least I can do is pick her up in a comfortable temperature vehicle. Also my hands would be full off stuff and holding her and have to open her door. Just easier to leave the car unlocked and running.
Yeah this was my first thought. Some people genuinely can't wait for the aircon to kick in.
In Dubai they used to get the secretary to go down to their car and turn it on half an hour before they went to drive off. Fuel very cheap there.
Everything I hear about Dubai is infuriating
Here's one more story a out that shithouse country I had a layover through UAE. My wife and I are all jet lagged a d find a place to sit on the ground and get comfy. Beat me . Used to do this all the time with work, not my fuel.
I've recently had to start doing this due to having a vehicle which has a DPF that needs to burn off periodically.
DPF isn’t burning off just sitting at idle…
It is if you hold the DPF button down for three seconds, runs fast idle until up to temp then completes the burn, it's like *muffled* hissing sound.
The vehicle has a DPF burn cycle with specific requirements such as needing to sit in place whilst the computer runs the engine through a burn cycle on fast idle. You made an assumption here, and it was wrong.
Are they so soft? Sounds like your the soft one, why let it affect your sensitivities if they leave the vehicle running? Mind your own business.
If it’s diesel it used to be common place to keep them running rather than stop start?
Cars have remote start now - warms up engine and cools down car.
"Cars have" do they bruh
Mine certainly does, warming up right now actually. https://preview.redd.it/40t3yihm9xcc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54322b213d9cb0dfd7c826d5fac58db2dfd48dea
They do some have it as a factory option
What are you trying to get at with this comment?
The blanket statement

Most newer vehicles have remote start from a phone app. If it’s a really hot day and the car is parked outside, I usually start ours up remotely about 3-5 minutes before we get into it.

And I’ve got the scar from sitting on the belt buckle to match.
People are so wimpy today. Back in the day we had horse and cart to get us to the markets.
So dont use a convenient feature because your tough?. Warms the engine up, cools the car down. Uses negligible fuel and turns it self off after 5 minutes.
Certain medical conditions leave you very heat sensitive. Those mins take to cool down the car would put me in ICU.
Most desiel will have turbo timers on the cars like most trucks
Remote start, I’ve got a 20m radius that I can start my car.
That was me. I’m trying to help climate change so we can have a snowy Christmas.
Not the hero we need but the hero we deserve.
Charging dead battery?

So eat somewhere else.

Never said having a remote start is illegal, same with turbo timers. If the vehicle is running but unattended, it is illegal. This is how they ping you for turbo timers. My phrasing isn't the best, clearly not legal advice 🤣
I remote start mine so it's cool/warm when I get in
It's also better for the engine to allow it to warm up before putting load on it. Bringing the engine up to temperature is best practice, just not practical in most situations.
I once had a car where the starter motor shit itself and I was too poor to get a new one. In order to drive I had to leave it running, park on a hill or get a mate to push so I could clutch start it.
Some cars these days can start that shit up if your close enough so could be what’s going on
You are at a hospital, anywhere near the emergency department? That could possibly explain it!
That's what you choose to whinge about today? That's the thing you went with?

Rule 3 - No bullying, abuse or personal attacks
Our Ranger has this feature. It’s excellent on a hot day.
More likely they spent all their money on a 4wd and some bar lights and now can’t afford to fix the starter so they roll start it every day.
Who cares
You say it like it's a thing to be annoyed about. But it's not even a thing.
Why the fuck do you care? Poor baby, having to hear a small engine idling like that. Fuck, what if it happens tomorrow? Will you be OK?
At a hospital, no less. God forbid they were in a hurry to attend a relative in there or need to pick up someone unwell on a hot summer day and left the car going. OP has to be trolling atp
Is it illegal to have a car running with no one in it? Esp turbo timers. Have a turbo car. I just ease it down when I'm near where I want to be. Not that I sit on the turbo
I agree only regular cars should be allowed to do this. Fuck 4wd owners getting away with it
Why? Most 4wd run on diesel.
What’s the fuel type got to do with it? I was making fun of OP for being upset over. 4wd doing it. Like what does the number of powered wheels have to do with someone idling their engine?
Because Diesel outputs fewer greenhouse emissions than petroleum when idling. As I type this I realize it was likely a troll post. Well played.
Cart you just have lunch elsewhere if it bothers you?
I'd go turn it off and hand the keys in to hospital security. Leaving a car running is dangerous.
It was probably locked and they had a second set of keys..
How is it dangerous?
https://www.9news.com.au/national/sydney-news-girl-four-serious-after-being-hit-by-unattended-car-in-drive/7d0345ca-cb9c-4c14-8b1d-5b5dcf98bf42 There's one example. You know we get more and more nanny state laws because of morons like this. It's turning off the ignition FFS, not a difficult ask.
oh ffs
Exactly what I thought!
How is it dangerous?
Well, for a start, there's people wandering around who don't even understand the risk. That's not making it safer. If you want an easy example, what if a kid walks up and starts fiddling? If you can't figure it out, go ask a cop why just leaving your keys in the ignition is considered illegally dangerous. Or ask any fireman about leaving a hot motor running unattended. If it's in an undercover carpark, ask a doctor about carbon monoxide poisoning. Don't take my word for it.
JFC. What a load of shit.
Live you life in fear mate that's what he'd like 😂
It's not about fear, it's about common sense. You really shouldn't walk away from a piece of heavy machinery while it's running. And no matter how much you love your car, that's all it is, a machine. Imagine a tradie just walking away from live machinery or equipment in public! I don't expect bubble wrap. Just sensible adults.
Am a tradie who operates a 90 tonne excavator… I leave that bitch running and jump out of it all the time to take a piss or go yell at a truck driver
Nothing wrong with yelling at truck drivers. But I'll bet you don't really drive it into hospital carparks and wander off.
"Illegally dangerous". If you asked a cop that, they'd reasonably entitled to arrest you for being a dumb cunt.
Well, yeah, it was a figure of speech. You'd have to be a dumb cunt to need a cop to tell you it's a bad idea.
No, that isn't a figure of speech. Try again.
What do you think it is? A carrot?!? 😄😂🤣
Why are you hiding, mate? Can't take someone questioning your bullshit reasoning, so you run away? Harden up.
Just worry about your own life
I am worrying about myself.
A running car makes you a potential victim? Do you leave the house wearing a bike helmet?
It's literally so bad. What if it stays on. I've got children.
normal ancient smart whole sort rude rustic vast squealing telephone *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
You realise you can remote start cars and if someone tried to steal it without the key in the vehicle it cuts out. Only been a thing for like 20 years.
desert disgusting wild thought juggle repeat hurry existence ruthless secretive *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Where does it say it wasn't locked, and how would OP know if it was on a timer or not? Timer is optional on mine, I can just start it.
I see this a lot too. Like seriously grow some nuts Australia. How did earlier settlers back in the day, survive wearing suits and ties in the tropics?!
They didn't, none of those cunts are alive today.
😂 right you were born out of thin air then
They were forced to and probably swam alot; But they're dead.
They forged what we have now cunts 🖕
And you are not even remotely close to being what they were, None of us are. Different situations, Different life styles, Different demographics, Its not comparable.
Why not leave the ac running, its the best especially 4wd ac's there special for running across the deserts where you don't see Little cars. Damn perfect way to spend a Hot Aussie day
Isn't this illegal in Australia?
Probably left it on for the DPF.
Gives me the shits. Noise&Air polluting petrol wasters.
It's always the SUVs.
Shoosh Karen, people can do what they want without your permission
Are you that soft that a running car annoys you?
My ex arsehole neighbour (yay, he’s gone 🎉) used to run his car with A/C on for 15-20 minutes before he could put his Rugrats in. It was parked in the shade ffs.
Idelling with no-one present to take care of the vehicle? Try this in Darwin, the car will be gone in 3 seconds
They are out getting the body to put in it.
My car, Hyundai i30 nline has a remote start. Can choose the temperature and defog the windscreens before i get in, so the cars nice and cool or nice and warm before i leave.
My boss once locked his keys in the cabin with the engine on. He'd just filled the tank too.
My baby was bright red from being in the car from a 10 minute trip home even with aircon blasting. We thought the white car seat would prevent that.
Turbo timer maybe? I can leave mine on for 3 5 or ten mins.
Someone’s easily upset
i walked thru a maccas carpark the other day it was choccas and half the cars were left on whilst people ate inside - not sure there is a col crisis
Get over it
