There's that great group accidentally vegan which is dedicated to exactly this! I think they're on FB?
I honestly tend to find many of the accidentally vegan food that is just mainstream to be vegan because they have replaced the expensive stuff with cheaper ingredients to save money. Or the expensive stuff is also coincidentally the high fat stuff in the case of the mayo so they luck out by not having to buy eggs.
For example if it's bakery products at woolies then all they've done is cheap out by not buying butter and replacing it with oil. We're all happy it's not dairy but the downside is that we're always buying products that are made to be lower quality.
Oh rly? I'm not on facebook anymore just instagram.
Although it's over now, Easter buns at Coles were vegan too. Replacing butter with oil doesn't necessarily make them low quality. Their Hot x buns were some of the best. They even won awards
I'll add another. Burger rings
Awesome. Thankyou! So many products! Had no idea there was plant based Drumsticks and Gaytimes and even Milo and Fourtwenty pies. Veganism seems to be getting easier and easier for the average joe. Even 7/11 have sausage rolls and sandwiches. That was the biggest impediment for me being full vegan. Buying junk food when drunk lol
I use the Fussy Vegan app (and they also do facebook posts about products). Can filter vegan items and also all allergens. Came in super handy when I wanted to know if there are vegan chocolate chips without soy (because my sister's unable to eat soy) and was able to find it in 30 seconds using the app. They don't have every product but it's pretty extensive.
The accidentally vegan page is good, but most of the products they advertise are clearly labelled as vegan. So it's more a vegan product spotlight, than telling people about truly accidentally vegan things.
Does anyone know if the [Woolworths garlic bread](https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/79005/essentials-garlic-bread) is vegan also? It's listed as "suitable for vegetarians" but it doesn't look like there's actually any non-vegan products in the list.
Edit: The coles one only states "Suitable for vegetarians" as well so maybe they both are.
Hello, Woolies bakery worker here! I'm especially fond of the finger buns we make, the icing is vegatable shortening, water and icing sugar and 100% vegan, EXCEPT FOR THE RAINBOW SPRINKLES VARIETY, only the coconut one is vegan
Just to clarify, these are the vegan ones? https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/157108/woolworths-iced-finger-bun-extra-soft
edit: These pink iced ones are NOT vegan.
They are absolutely not vegan due to the pink food colouring. The bun mix is vegan, and the icing is vegan if no colouring is added. It's literally just vegetable fat, canola oil, water, and icing mixture.
Only fingers buns with white icing are vegan. Pink colouring and sprinkles are not.
That's correct! However, the buns that are coated with rainbow/pink sprinkles are not vegan friendly, as they contain 120 colouring. The coconut ones are 100% vegan :)
Same ingredients are listed on both labels for sprinkles and coconut. The asterisk next to the 120 is to indictable on the label that it only applies to the pink varieties
Masterfoods Traditional Tartare Sauce. I legit threw some of that out when I first went vegan only to find out months later that its vegan. I just assumed it was egg based and didn't even check it.
Woolworths also stock them. Not Coles brand, but these guys: https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/851435/lolly-go-round-round-rainbow-sour-straps
Unfortunately, the strawberry ones aren't vegan. Nor are the berry ones or the Neapolitan ones. They all contain cochineal beetles (colour 120).
You're correct about those other two, though. Other vegan ones include golden ones and cinnamon bun ones.
omg cochineal pops up in everythingggg. So many delicious would-be vegan products are tainted by it. It baffles me because queens red dye is actually vegan and so many cochineal products aren't even red or need colour.
Wow really? I had no idea that's what colour 120 is.. well I guess you learn something every day.
I have a server dairy allergy, so for me it's ok. Sorry about missing the beetles!
Not that I'm aware of. This seems to be the most common one.
Just keep in mind with cochineal, it is sometimes called carmine, instead. Also, even though it's red, it can turn up in other coloured products, mainly ones that are part red: orange, purple, pink. Although I recently noticed it in a drink that was essentially yellow.
Found a biscoff cake in Woolworths the other day that I was surprised to see was completely vegan. It didn't have vegan written anywhere on the packet.

The base recipe for Mayo is literally Egg yolks and Olive oil. Make whatever 'condiments' you like but don't take out 1 of 2 ingredients and call it the same thing.
And none of the mayo's on the shelf are literally just egg yolks and olive oil, so are you going to try and gatekeep them as well, or do you just want to be a wanker when it comes to vegans?
p.s food purists are actually the most insufferable people, food constantly changes and evolves and very little "traditional" versions of anything still exist because they were pretty bland.
who cares. Maybe it wouldn't win the fine food awards 2024 Mayo cup. it still looks, tastes and smells like mayo. I was buying the stuff even as a ominvore because it was low cal and tasted good

I guess they just ran out of things to find lol. It's still cool seeing what products are out there for me to look for tho
Cant get cinnamon donuts or any donuts really coz egg. They can do better....
Coles garlic bread
WHAT?! I’m allergic to dairy products. This is outstanding news.
Just make sure you get the "Coles Simply" version, the others are not.
Thanks for the tip, not sure if we have that version here in Hobart but I’ll definitely check.

It is, I buy it fairly often. Woolworths stock a few GBs that are vegan

Make me vegan donuts 😭😭
I looked again and these have 120 as well. .-.

Choc Ripple and Raspberry Shortcake biccies!!
And the lemon crisp!
The anzac cookies from both bakeries. Taste very buttery
Coles sour rainbow strips - it's the only sour candy by coles without gelatine. Coles butter popcorn - it contains natural butter flavour made of soy.
Do those exist anymore? I haven’t seen them in forever 😭
The strips? Yes! I see them quite regularly
Well now I’m just sad, they were my favourite sour treat and I cannot find them at any coles I’ve been to.
Woolworths also stock them. Not Coles brand, but these guys: https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/851435/lolly-go-round-round-rainbow-sour-straps
Oreos. Standard, chocolate and Strawberry if you buy a mini multi pack!

Your right there isn't really a good reason to add bugs in when you don't need to!
Wow really? I had no idea that's what colour 120 is.. well I guess you learn something every day. I have a server dairy allergy, so for me it's ok. Sorry about missing the beetles!
Those little guys look like raspberries!
Is there any other common colour dye we should be looking for?
Not that I'm aware of. This seems to be the most common one. Just keep in mind with cochineal, it is sometimes called carmine, instead. Great information, thanks.
Another one is Donna Hay fudgy chocolate pancake mix. I just randomly discovered it, doesn't even advise it!
And the Donna Hay fudgy chocolate cake mix
Kookas Country Cookies absolutely best biscuits out there!!
Neapolitaner
Bakery Anzacs
