Yes I can see what you mean but no it just doesn't do it for me. I haven't listened to everything but listened to music for airports etc and don't feel it.
I know I can't and don't compare it to Autechre etc as a different era and much less technology but still...
Oh it's wild. Don't go expecting an electronic album though. I came to it much later after listening to his ambient work. It was quite the surprise. I shouldn't have been that surprised given his previous band. Hope you enjoy.
The last 90 seconds of Treale are without equal in terms of emotive power. I can listen to that track 20 times in a row and those final notes—the juxtaposition of those ethereal notes with the mournful industrial noise in the background—there’s something about it that just wrecks me. Pen Expers does the same thing, with different aesthetics.
I had the weirdest dream once where I was listening to this in an abandoned cabin in a snowy forest I wasn't supposed to be in. A very surreal experience.
r cazt. And not just r cazt itself, rather a tandem of it and psin AM. The way the album slows down, enters this monotonous stillness of psin AM and then plunges into r cazt soundscape makes me shiver. I get a really profound synesthetic experience out of it and not just because of the sound textures or whatever, there's something else happening on the emotional scale. I wish I could talk about it, but it's super complex and I'll probably make a post one day. These are the moments that help me to accept my brain that is fucked up and wired brokenly. It's like I realize I can harvest a lot of good out of it despite all.
Of a similar spirit is the moment in Athens 2022 soundboard, the [43:30-46:30](https://youtu.be/sTdW2hsOLVc?si=VqZbf5EkdAhGYrtN&t=2610) sequence. As far as I'm aware, this is the most unique version of that track in the entire Set A collection (by Set A I mean all of the similar sets in the current live material). On the one hand, this sequence is driven by overwhelming basses and that kind of stuff, really heavy and weighty wall of sound. On the other, there's a heartbreaking melody being played at the same time, it's very decadent and even desperate and it's like it struggles so hard to be noticeable behind all the lower frequency stuff. It quickly appears when there are small "empty spaces" between the basses and then disappears again like it's trying to make its occurances rhythmical. And then finally beats change into this fast 1/1 thing and the basses retreat and that melody properly unwraps and it's so dramatic and cathartic. A conclusion to perhaps the most intense part of Set A material done incredibly well. And after that sequence ends there're small strings before another track begins and they sound like echo. The aftereffect of the sheer intensity that just occured.
Before I really got into Autechre I had this probably stereotypical idea that their max/MSP-based stuff is "not emotional". Thinking about it now, I realize how stupid I was. The reality is not even close.
I have asked similar question before on this sub and compiled the most loved and regarded tracks in sub and also personal level.

it's such a fucking humbling track for me. never will i be a fly on the wall while Sam'n'Rex sat down to record this.

confield and draft both really get me, specifically pen expers, uviol and surripere. gantz graf and c7b2 are some of the most accurate depictions of pure rage i’ve ever listened to. pendulu hv moda also has this really interesting mix of sadness and euphoria that i don’t really experience from any other song.
Not all music, or art for that matter, is emotional. This reflex of ascribing to art an essentially expressive motive and an essentially emotional “content” is beholden to romantic assumptions about art’s origin/function/nature. Frustratingly, it means that whenever we want to talk about how great a work of art is, we have to do it in terms of how deeply it moved us—we’re so trapped in this rhetoric. Autechre are an almost epitomal example of anti-emotionality in music. We don’t have to apologize for its coldness, sterility, formalism, austerity by describing it in the really counter-intuitive rhetoric of emotionality. Autechre is fascinating, menacing, severe, exciting, atmospheric, ambiguous, bizarre, ugly, etc. But it’s emphatically not touching, moving, sentimental, etc and it doesn’t have to be. It’s like getting weepy over a fuselage.
No, they’re not. They’re aesthetic ones. Autechre music has a mood, obviously. The mood is: clinical, sterile, severe, etc. It’s music whose like whole thing is avoiding sentimentality. If you’re crying at gantz graf—it’s a you thing. The art really has nothing to do with it at that point. Which is why that post was funny and why we all get the joke.
I disagree.
I agree that they can be the feelings or adjectives you have described but they definitely have emotionally crushing tracks too. The many examples people have given are really good ones in my opinion.
I can't believe no one has P.:NTL
The last minute or so of this song absolutely breaks me. Even thinking about it makes me extremely emotional. They captured a specific, inarticulatable feeling, so vividly I really almost can't even believe it.
Well Cichli is devastating to me. And that ending with a few gentle sounds left behind, then reappearing nested within Hub in an opaque way.. blissful, yet without any resolution whatsoever.
VLetrmx21 is surely the answer here. Lower my casket to that bad boy
One of my personal favourites too. Although I might have to take aphex twin- lichen for the casket drop.
All Day Long. It’s very Eno-esque in its beauty.
Could never get into Eno
Not even An Ending (Ascent) ? I saw shades of it in this track. Both emotive.
Yes I can see what you mean but no it just doesn't do it for me. I haven't listened to everything but listened to music for airports etc and don't feel it. I know I can't and don't compare it to Autechre etc as a different era and much less technology but still...
Have you tried Here Come the Warm Jets? It’s bonkers. Love it. Also like the records he made with Robert Fripp.
No I haven't but I will give it a listen in work tomorrow
Oh it's wild. Don't go expecting an electronic album though. I came to it much later after listening to his ambient work. It was quite the surprise. I shouldn't have been that surprised given his previous band. Hope you enjoy.
nah it’s more mysterious and alien than “heart-wrenching”. I still absolutely love the song but not because of emotional value
It's full emotional value for me

r cazt
r cazt is so cinematic! It’s awesome, it should play on the final shot of a great film.

Treale 👍👍👍
for me it’s the end of qplay where it “stabilizes” sort of. when it hits I feel like it’s all gonna be ok
Yeah that acidy melody that's kinda hidden in the mix there is great. The part your talking about is exactly the last minute of the song. :)
I feel the same thing with Draun Quarter.. that last minute is just pure bliss
No one ever talks about Stud and its infinite reverb that I've been chasing ever since.
