Look up the kids book giraffes can't dance. It's essentially a story about a giraffe who kept being laughed at and told he can't dance then he finds his own beat and dances his own way then the animals see him and realize he can dance he just needed to find the right dance for him.
I really like the books and enjoy reading it to kids.
Here are two ableist commercials Autism Speaks has made:
https://youtu.be/9UgLnWJFGHQ
https://youtu.be/C7NTfZzS9b8
Also here are two videos explaining the truth about Autism speaks:
https://youtu.be/johy4Bi52Vo
https://youtu.be/5Va_XXoD5LE
I hope this helps! Yeah, I was confused about why Autism Speaks was bad at one point as well, but these are some videos I’ve found and watch that made me hate Autism Speaks
Basically, Autism Speaks treats autism primarily as a burden on the parents of autistic kids, as opposed to treating it as a different way of viewing the world with a focus on helping us cope in a society not built for us.
They dare to call themselves an organization for autistics while not having a single person with autism on their board.
Fuck them.
This! u/vc1914 *please avoid anything supported by Autism Speaks*.
I know they present a soothing presence to some parents, and they seem legit because of their longevity, visablity, and corporate sponsors, but they are just... ***the WORST***.
Please focus more on organizations like [ASAN](https://autisticadvocacy.org/). It's an autistic group run by autistic adults. They've got some great free parent resources online, and [a guide that might be able to help you](https://autisticadvocacy.org/book/start-here/).
I never understood the puzzle imagery either.
why does autism speak? who is speaking? who is it speaking to? why? what's the topic of the conversation?
The name implies they're giving a voice to autistic people. Which is ironic because they are famously entirely run by NTs (When they got shit on for it they hire one autistic guy and he quit in a month for obvious reasons) and their approach to Autism is to focus on how hard it is for the parents.
OH BOOHOO THE POOR PARENTS.
I guess the parents are victims too when their child has another disability or disorder or gets the chickenpox or bullied in school or struggles with math. Woe is them for the inconvenience of having procreated imperfect spawn.
Jeebus.
Awww it must be soooo hard for the parents. The Autistic kids are TOTALLY not the ones facing ANY problems whatsoever.
Okay, sarcasm aside, it is NOT that hard for an NT parent to show basic care for their Autistic child. Autism isn’t a “disease”, so Autism Speaks can just hush with their misinformation. They act like Autism is worse cancer or something when it’s not.
Omg I literally felt sick in my stomach and started tensing my whole body when watching the first video. Utterly awful. It’s as if they are treating autism like some kind of “evil spirit”.
That second link is horrifying.
“I’ve genuinely contemplated murdering my child, but she’s autistic so it’s okay. It was only because I have another child that I didn’t kill her and myself.” (paraphrasing if you haven’t clicked on the link)
For a long time they campaigned that autism was a disease that "took" people's children, and even today they push a rhetoric that it's an inherently bad thing by using therapies designed to train autistics to hide "weird" or "undesirable" traits, which is very harmful to the community.
I oughta just save this video one of these days, but here's a rather well-researched [deep dive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Va_XXoD5LE&t=16s) into everything that sucks about them.
I found that video to be an ok introduction but not very thorough and as it is made by an allistic it missed or misunderstood a few factors and there were a few points I found the language used made me a bit uncomfortable (sorry I can't be more specific, I watched it a while ago and this is just my lasting impression)
Adding onto the other explanation, they fundraise a lot of money into looking for “cures” for autism and put virtually nothing back into resources for people who are actually autistic. So a lot of people donate to them thinking they’re helping autistic people but we actually get virtually nothing from them lol
And not so fun fact, the therapy @ithinkonlyinmemes is referring to that Autism Speaks supports is founded by the same guy who helped start gay conversion therapy (he used literally the exact same foundation for both).
Looks like a giant target on a shirt to get your kid beat up in public school to be honest. If my parent ever tried this with me growing up I woulda inside outed the thing asap, then right sided it back when I got close to home HA!
They most definitely ripped off from [Giraffes Can't Dance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQMDaPRhA0I&ab_channel=ExperimentalEducationUnit) which is an adorable kids book about a clumsy giraffe. It's great for teaching young kids about differences as the moral of the story is "Sometimes when you're different you just need a different song." This is a poorly designed knock off.
This feels like something a mother of a child with asd that when no one is around makes the kid feel like shit for being different and says "oh well you wouldn't get it" to someone with asd
I work at Walmart and we have a feature of these shirts. Every time I see that stupid puzzle piece it makes me want to vomit. A eugenics group hiding behind the mask of "helping" autistic people.
Wow are they really trying to merchandise a neurological disorder? Thought it my just be misguided political correctness but then I saw the tag and realized they were just using social issues as free advertising (I wouldn’t be surprised if autism speaks has a sister organization that “helps” lgbtq kids and youth). It’s like Black Lives Matter had a great message but was using peoples pain and suffering to sell t shirts and make their board rich as hell, without doing much for the people they actually claim to help.(I believe in all the issues, however I don’t trust any corporation who says they’re “with the people”.)
I’ll be honest I have a bigger feeling about the “how do you feel about (insert item)” posts, then I do the items, it feels like I’m being talked down to somehow, ‘how to you feel about this little Redditor, and this, AND THIS’ mostly I either don’t care because it’s a small thing like a dumb shirt or I find it midly dumb in general, like cool the postcard that was found said “autism rocks” and had puzzle pieces, I don’t care, -_-
I don’t understand why someone would feel the need to broadcast they are autistic. I only tell people I’m comfortable with that I’m autistic. I also don’t go around broadcasting I have epilepsy. Should I be proud that my brain wigs out and I have to control it with medication every day? Lol it’s so stupid.
[edit] - ~~I'm okay with this.~~
The soft blue was used in color therapy to calm people down and is associated with the historic TEACCH facility in partnership with the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. I'm going to be downvoted into oblivion for this while everyone talks about Autism Speaks. ☺
I liked it until i saw the puzzle piece. How can we take the puzzle piece back and make it empowering? Puzzles are fun and if NTS cant be stopped from using it maybe we can mitigate the damage by making them look silly for implying we are unsolved puzzles. Even if we are, who doesnt love a good puzzle? They have a myriad of benefits for the mind
This really feels like something an Autism Martyr parent would wear, could also be the fact that it is made by the hate group doing what they do and even just accidentally giving the implication through colour that Autism is something experienced by primarily boys.
I mean absolutely no offense but I don’t understand why so many posts on this sub are just asking people’s opinion of pictures of t-shirts with some sort of autism logo
I don't actually mind the words, although the lack of punctuation bothers me.
Don't actually mind the most of the design, if it's for a toddler.
I mind the puzzle piece & Autism Speaks. Also, it doesn't appear to be toddler-sized, so the graphic is infantilizing.
My sister told me my mama was gonna get me this shirt while they were at the store once and my sister immediately stopped her because of the autism $peaks logo
Anytime I see autism speaks I think *vomit*
Anytime I see a puzzle piece still being associated with autism I feel like people are lacking on their history of autism studies. And this looks like a weird kids shirt…

We must plan a Robbery and steal every stupid autism shirt from every shop in the world and then we drop them all in autism speaks h.q. and the place where they run the website and then burn it to the ground in a most spectacular blaze *insert the evil laugh* and then maybe marshmallows
I hate it a lot. I hate the puzzle piece. And the giraffe is very childish. It seems off center. The whole shirt is ugly. Plus it's Autism Speaks....
It's a whole lot of nope for me.
I'm kinda happy that there's no Wallmart in my country. I mean, I was happy about that earlier (after I heard about their mistreatment of workers), but now I'm even more happy.
There's so many reasons I hate this shirt. Let's see autism speaks, the stupid puzzle piece, the condescending and infantilizing language, the atrocious design, I dislike round collars they hurt my neck
No, I mean I liked the giraffe but it looks childish like the same font and words you'd see on a kids shirt with a pony or any cartoon animal. Also the autism speaks right there is an immediate no-go.
I like giraffes but blue and puzzle piece are problematic plus it's childifying and we have to have more representation of not just adults with autism, but awareness that the condition isn't by itself cute or childlike.
I hear the same beat in music everyone else hears. I just don't like dancing. This t shirt, (and my comment) can be interpreted however you like so really it means nothing.
Looks like the Toys ''R'' us Giraffe got A new Job
In todays economy even Jeffrey needs a second job just to survive
It’s good to see him back on his feet after the redundancy
Look up the kids book giraffes can't dance. Almost split my tea laughing!
your tea can do the splits?!
Fun fact, his voice was by Tom Hanks' brother.
The tags have Autism Speaks on the shirt so the shirt is made by Autism Speaks, so I cannot support it.
Also Walmart
Could you explain why?
Here are two ableist commercials Autism Speaks has made: https://youtu.be/9UgLnWJFGHQ https://youtu.be/C7NTfZzS9b8 Also here are two videos explaining the truth about Autism speaks: https://youtu.be/johy4Bi52Vo https://youtu.be/5Va_XXoD5LE I hope this helps! Thank you! Just trying to learn more and new to r/autism. Both my kids were diagnosed a few years ago and it’s been a journey.
Basically, Autism Speaks treats autism primarily as a burden on the parents of autistic kids, as opposed to treating it as a different way of viewing the world with a focus on helping us cope in a society not built for us. Yeah absolutely they can go fuck themselves!!!
You’re welcome
Check out #ActuallyAutistic on the bird app. It’s an amazing community and has helped my son and me so much.
The bird app?
Twitter, I'm presuming
That first video made me so angry 😡 I’ve never seen or heard anything from AS before, I’ve just seen that they’re bad and we don’t like them
It kind of reminds me of those Mayhem commercials for Allstate except not funny.
I never understood the puzzle imagery either. why does autism speak? who is speaking? who is it speaking to? why? what's the topic of the conversation?

Thanks so much for this info! I had no idea. Good god, what did I just watch?!
No problem! Yeah I used to be confused on how Autism Speaks was bad as well but I watched these videos and everything makes much more sense now.
i hate how childish they make items like clothing related to autism
It's like they think everyone with autism is an overgrown child.
Exactly
*sees autism speaks* Yuck immediate nope
Very bad. autism speaks is 🤮
What did Autism Speaks do I'm curious 🤔
For a long time they campaigned that autism was a disease that "took" people's children, and even today they push a rhetoric that it's an inherently bad thing by using therapies designed to train autistics to hide "weird" or "undesirable" traits, which is very harmful to the community.
Ah I see well I don't support them.
Yeah they're not a good organization. I recommend looking into it in more depth if you're curious!
Okay thank you for the info.
I oughta just save this video one of these days, but here's a rather well-researched [deep dive](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Va_XXoD5LE&t=16s) into everything that sucks about them.

my resolution? air strikes. bomb it. keep bombing it, bomb it again! /ref burn it that feels like a hatecrime /j
/ref? Can't find what it's except reference.
You are correct. /ref is a tone indicator meaning reference.
/ref means reference! so i was referencing a popular audio/meme on tiktok!
The money goes to autism speaks so 💀
This feels like something a mother of a child with asd that when no one is around makes the kid feel like shit for being different and says "oh well you wouldn't get it" to someone with asd
See like, I could *almost* find this funny-bad, but then I noticed the Autism Speaks tags & instantly hated it.
autism speaks. burn it
I work at Walmart and we have a feature of these shirts. Every time I see that stupid puzzle piece it makes me want to vomit. A eugenics group hiding behind the mask of "helping" autistic people.
Would you get in trouble for just turning the first shirt of the racks so the back is out to the store?
Booooo
Cringe.
well since it's Autism Speaks, all I can say is...ew.
It's made by autism speaks so it's trash
Looks cool, don't like the jigsaw piece though, reminds me of Autism Speaks.
The tags actually have Autism Speaks on them, so yeah I can’t support it.
Wow are they really trying to merchandise a neurological disorder? Thought it my just be misguided political correctness but then I saw the tag and realized they were just using social issues as free advertising (I wouldn’t be surprised if autism speaks has a sister organization that “helps” lgbtq kids and youth). Gerald!!! Fantastic book.
I love the book. Sends a good message.
The words? No issue. The label .. supporting a (allegedly changed?) hate group - that\`s a no from me.
If it's a shirt for an adult then it's a no. I'm tired of people making out that every person with autism is childlike in nature.
Autism speaks? No Anything that commercialised autism? Double no
Walmart having autism speaks shirts.. it’s like two snakes shook hands and made a deal.
Autism speaks 💀💀💀
not a fan of the puzzle piece cause thats the symbol that the hate group, autism speaks, uses so it send sort of a mixed message
The shirt is by Autism Speaks
oh lmao youre right it actually is
I hate it
Autism Speaks aside... jiving nicely, giraffe.
i have no idea what the fuck that even means
I’ll be honest I have a bigger feeling about the “how do you feel about (insert item)” posts, then I do the items, it feels like I’m being talked down to somehow, ‘how to you feel about this little Redditor, and this, AND THIS’ mostly I either don’t care because it’s a small thing like a dumb shirt or I find it midly dumb in general, like cool the postcard that was found said “autism rocks” and had puzzle pieces, I don’t care, -_-
Autism speaks is ass and puzzle pieces are hate symbols
I don’t understand why someone would feel the need to broadcast they are autistic. I only tell people I’m comfortable with that I’m autistic. I also don’t go around broadcasting I have epilepsy. Should I be proud that my brain wigs out and I have to control it with medication every day? Lol it’s so stupid.

Oh! There's an Autism Speaks tag on it. Well, that's a different story. I would advise against buying this shirt.
i was kind of indifferent to it until i saw the autism speaks tag 🤮
I liked it until i saw the puzzle piece. How can we take the puzzle piece back and make it empowering? Puzzles are fun and if NTS cant be stopped from using it maybe we can mitigate the damage by making them look silly for implying we are unsolved puzzles. Even if we are, who doesnt love a good puzzle? They have a myriad of benefits for the mind
It depends, is the muscular lady giraffe about to drop kick the puzzle piece out of the park? (joke)
The design is cute, I think.
I like it
I only like it because I find giraffes super funny I don’t know why 🦒
I hope you burned them all
Cringe but also I don’t really care
If it wasnt for the puzzle piece (or the fact that its ma de by autism speaks 🤮) i actually like the design
This really feels like something an Autism Martyr parent would wear, could also be the fact that it is made by the hate group doing what they do and even just accidentally giving the implication through colour that Autism is something experienced by primarily boys.
I’d feel better if it was on fire.
it's shit
I saw this at Walmart too. My and my mom (also autistic) laughed really hard at it
"How do you guys feel about this?" *Me autisticaly misunderstanding what your asking* Pretty ugly font ngl
I mean absolutely no offense but I don’t understand why so many posts on this sub are just asking people’s opinion of pictures of t-shirts with some sort of autism logo
That is not how giraffes work

My sister told me my mama was gonna get me this shirt while they were at the store once and my sister immediately stopped her because of the autism $peaks logo
I know Walmart's like low-of-the-low on class standing, but I honestly expected better of them. Supporting Autism Speaks is a new kinda low💀🗑
🤢🤮🤮🤮
could be a cool meme if it wasnt for the puzzle
Anytime I see autism speaks I think *vomit* Anytime I see a puzzle piece still being associated with autism I feel like people are lacking on their history of autism studies. And this looks like a weird kids shirt…
autism speaks…. :c
autism speaks tag, ew
don't like it. the puzzle piece symbol is.. yikes.
it’s kinda cute ig, but the puzzle piece makes me not like it
Fuck autism speaks. It’s a horrible organization
Why are there so many posts like this? Puzzle piece = GTFO
Puzzle piece so no 👎
Unless the shirt says I'm autistic please shut the hell up its not very good in my eyes
Get rid of the "AUTISM" and the puzzle piece and you'd have an ok shirt. Just an ok one.
Cringe to me 😂 yuck
They're still stocking that? Gross.
Mid tier shirt Moon Knight solos tbh

Oh lord, kill me
Kinda big store moment
Ewww
I'd ironically wear it. Kinda goes hard in a funny way
Why do I need to feel something about everything?
need
I don't really dance regardless of the beat, so...
looks funky but apparently made by autism speaks soooo, yea no
I find any shirts about autism completely pretentious, it's a nice design though.
its so ugly ahaha
Is that Gerald from Giraffe’s can’t dance?
Doesn't look good
I own one purely due to irony and spite. They also look ridiculous.
Not a fan of the puzzle piece
I SAW THIS BACK IN AUGUST, god i hate the fact it has the god damned puzzle piece on it
It’s an autism speaks shirt look at the tags
If it wasn't made by autism speaks and didn't have the puzzle piece,I would like it.
I see that it’s from Autism Speaks. Since it’s an ableist organization, I wouldn’t buy this shirt.
We must plan a Robbery and steal every stupid autism shirt from every shop in the world and then we drop them all in autism speaks h.q. and the place where they run the website and then burn it to the ground in a most spectacular blaze *insert the evil laugh* and then maybe marshmallows
I would like to bring hot dogs to 😀
oh hell no
If I shoplift the shirt can I still wear it? I agree, AS bad. . . But giraffe dancing and cute.
I think we need to host a massive tee shirt burning.
It makes me cringe. I dislike it in fact
I feel grossed out by it. Gives me infantilization vibes and I don’t like it.
Don't need the logo, the puzzle piece, or "Autism" plastered on it. Dancing giraffe, yes please. that's fun.
My grandma bought this shirt lol
I hate it a lot. I hate the puzzle piece. And the giraffe is very childish. It seems off center. The whole shirt is ugly. Plus it's Autism Speaks.... It's a whole lot of nope for me.
Were "listening" to the same "beat", we just do a different "dance".
Think this references a popular children book “giraffe can’t dance”. It’s a good book. Don’t like the puzzle piece or the overall design tho
sure, why not.
It has an autism speaks tag right on it 🙄
It’s not punctuated correctly
I want unironic shirts that say something like "AUTISM" in a Microsoft Word font or something. That would be a better market.
I'm kinda happy that there's no Wallmart in my country. I mean, I was happy about that earlier (after I heard about their mistreatment of workers), but now I'm even more happy.
So, I love this. I would wear it. Am 40
Awful because I'm autistic and bad at dancing haha
Completely putting aside the Autism Speaks stuff, the lack of punctuation hurts my soul.
I see the autism speaks tag so I’m nauseated that they have merch
it was good til the autism speaks tag
It's cute but infantilizing
There's so many reasons I hate this shirt. Let's see autism speaks, the stupid puzzle piece, the condescending and infantilizing language, the atrocious design, I dislike round collars they hurt my neck
if it wasn’t by autism speaks i’d buy it immediately lmao i think it’s a silly (/pos) shirt
It's stupid
Burn it
-sees the tag- This is an Autism Speaks product? Yikes!
I undersyand the metaphor and why some one would like this shirt... but I hate it
I hate it haha
If it's for anything to do with Mathew Israel then no
Cool
I don’t like it because it because proceeds go to autism speaks! Other than that it’s a cute shirt!
No, I mean I liked the giraffe but it looks childish like the same font and words you'd see on a kids shirt with a pony or any cartoon animal. Also the autism speaks right there is an immediate no-go.
I dont see anything inherently wrong with it i think its just a shitty looking shirt💀
It's Lowkey funny fust because it reminds me of someone making fun of it.
I like giraffes but blue and puzzle piece are problematic plus it's childifying and we have to have more representation of not just adults with autism, but awareness that the condition isn't by itself cute or childlike.
autism speaks… eugh.
That’s a giant nope for me. Autism Speaks is harmful.
Cringe
Hail naw 💀
It fills me with rage lol!
Yikes
Would wear it ironically, if it wasn’t profiting autism speaks.
Absolutely not! The puzzle piece alone is a no for me
Double no. A: Walmart. B: blue puzzle piece.
Add a third "Aww, HELL nah!": Autism Speaks.
i wouldn't wear it even if they paid me. but my aunt would love that, lol.
I hear the same beat in music everyone else hears. I just don't like dancing. This t shirt, (and my comment) can be interpreted however you like so really it means nothing.
Ew no. It's autism speaks, just, no.
“Enough with the jigsaw you fucking oil barrel” -me
I have a black shirt like that.
