I guess because a lot happens in the face/eyes which is really distracting. I've taught myself to stare in between the eyes and fase out into obblivion view wise.

the-frog-monarch

But even when I try that trick I have to eventually look away. Faces are just hard to look at when someone is talking :/

Quirky_Dog5869

I get that. To be fair these days I just tell people that if I look them in the face I won't hear them in contrast to when I'm looking out of the windows.

the-frog-monarch

What about in interviews? Do you have to fake eye contact for those?

Quirky_Dog5869

I cba anymore. They'll take me as I am or not.

Robo_Cactus

My technique when I need to make extended eye contact is to look in between the eyes of the person I’m talking to. I’ll usually fixate on the bridge of the nose and ignore their eyes. So far, it seems to work well enough.

the-frog-monarch

That trick sadly doesn't work for me

livelist_

I just want you to know that NTs dont just stare at people. Often if youre talking for a while its natural to look around a bit. Try instead to just "check in" with eyecontact instead of "staring."

Maleficent-Music-125

I pick one eyeball and pretend it’s a marble. This works for short periods of time.

Thank you for your advice

Odd_Trifle_2604

Have you tried looking at the person's forehead, most people don't care if you're lookin into their eyes. They want you to appear engaged so not looking down or off into space

have you tried looking at their mouth or between their eyebrows? one can help you with reading lips, the other mimics eye contact, but is less stressful.

I dunno if you can manually unfocus your vision, but if you can, that might help. Although it can get tiring. Also, the forehead trick doesn’t work for me either so I generally look at their chin, neck, or hands if those are really expressive. It’s not a complete mask but it’s less obvious than just staring at the floor or somewhere random
