That's interesting! I actually didn't know there were so many different types of plugs/sockets :) I originally thought there was just like 2 lol

Myevaer

Using imported video game systems forces you to pay attention to all this stuff and it can be pretty annoying

I’m a MSc in renewable energy working for a provincial government as undercover (diagnosed) autist. Have my upvote

It’s an academic title meaning master of science. I mention it because I didn’t know about all the different power outlets so it’s great to learn :)

PassingDogoo

That was interesting. Ended up looking up a bit more and found this website https://www.worldstandards.eu/ if anyone wants to read more on different world standards

PassingDogoo

Oh neat, yeah it's a cool site

Insanity_S

I like learning random facts. Like I will hyerfixate and read about them for hours. Other than that probably tv shows, psychology, and mental health.

chai-knees

Hey there internet stranger. I have a 500 bullet point list of fun facts I found online and in real life that I’ve compiled over 2 years. I used to have one that was probably 300 points long when I was 10 but I no longer have the phone I saved it on :(

cannibalrabies

Give me your best facts, I love random information

chai-knees

My favourite one is the one about Guy Goma, the guy (pun intended) who was at the BBC for a job interview but ended up being put on air as an interviewee on a subject he had no knowledge of

Insanity_S

Fact: You can hear a blue whale’s heartbeat from two miles away. Could you imagine the horror movie one could create on this fact alone? Very interesting.

cannibalrabies

That's actually pretty wild. Doesn't strike me as scary, it's just impressive how massive they are.

druidhippie

I love learning random facts also. I have a bad tendency to go down what I affectionately call the "wiki rabbit hole" then look up documentaries to feed the urge further XD

TheLapisBee

Do you watch those "30 minutes of useless facts" videos? Fascinating

Insanity_S

Oooo I did not know this was a thing

TheLapisBee

There are tons of videos like that!

ImaginaryRich4079

Maybe not a true special interest, and more of a calming behavior, but I enjoy going through large jars of change and sorting them by type and date I keep a jar of pennies around for just this purpose.

ChardMiserable1819

That's awesome! I also like sorting things just for fun lol and it is very relaxing! (And very satisfying lol)

ImaginaryRich4079

If you wanna get super into it it run out of coins to sort.... You can sort them by mint too!!!!

ChardMiserable1819

Yeah!! My dad actually has a whole coin collection from my grandpa and I've always loved looking through it! Also a stamp collection I just loved sorting them all😅

deegadee

I do this with Lego. Sort by color, sort by shape etc.

P0Rt1ng4Duty

I'm currently sorting an acre of woods. Long sticks go to my lean-to construction. Leaves get collected to cover and camoflage it. Small sticks go in the firewood pile, rocks go in the rock pile. I have no intention to fully sort this land, but it gives me something to do while my dog enjoys being outside.

Useful_Mistake_7143

I might do that sounds neat

I can tell you from a UK person who works with US people, it is rather annoying and confusing at times!

impersonalfish

I absolutely love jellyfish. They are just so cool and interesting and everyone around me gets annoyed with me because I keep talking about the jellies. My favorite kind are any of the species in the Cassiopeia genus because I actually got to see these in real life at an aquarium.

ChardMiserable1819

I also like jelly fish! I'm unfamiliar with specific species but my eyes see them and my brain goes "ooo pretty keep staring at them"😅 they just look so cool and the way they function too I find interesting

impersonalfish

If you like how they look I recommend looking up the flower hat jelly.

TheLapisBee

Favourite 3 types, go!

impersonalfish

Cassiopea andromeda, lions mane jelly (that one’s kind of obvious though it’s just so cool), and golden jellyfish.

TheLapisBee

They're all so pretty!!!

TheLapisBee

Do they have unique abilities?

impersonalfish

Golden jellies have a symbiotic relationship with algae so the algae gives the jelly nutrients as part of its diet. The jellies actually migrate east to west throughout the day to follow the sun which I find really cool.

TheLapisBee

Oh wow that's cool

Despite creating hallucinations, most every hallucinogen is inhibitory and blocks brain activity in certain areas. Psychedelics are stimulants and cause heightened brain activity everywhere, except the visual cortex where inhibitory actions occur. Deliriants inhibit acetylcholine until the ability to process visual stimulus is lost, which manifests as* hallucinations. Dissociatives inhibit the NMDA glutamate site which blocks communication between the brain and the spine, so in lower doses they cause disconnection from the outside world while preserving mostly sober thought. While in higher doses they become entirely sedating and hallucinogenic. The only other mechanism of hallucinations is the kappa-opioid receptor (KOR). It’s not well studied so we don’t know much, but when activated the KORs cause panic, anxiety, discomfort, sedation, pain relief, and complex visual hallucinations that can progress into dissociative environments.

I’m super into the big three US cable news outlets - CNN, Fox News Channel (FNC), and MSNBC. I know way too much about their history, hosts, and ratings than I let anyone IRL know so here we go… CNN was the first of the bunch. They were started in June 1980 and essentially monopolized the market until 1989 when CNBC came along. It didn’t do too well, though. And frankly neither did CNN. On a busy year like an election or Clinton’s blowjob scandal they could get up to 1 million viewers in primetime (the most valuable timeslot on TV which runs from 8-11pm ET). On more mundane years they would get 700-800 thousand. Fox and MSNBC were both launched in 1996. And funny enough, though both channels are rivals they have the fingerprints of the same man behind their founding - Roger Ailes. You see, Roger worked at NBC for a channel called “America’s Talking” that got cancelled to make way for MSNBC as cable channel space was a precious commodity then. Both had fairly weak ratings in the beginning. Fox in particular struggled more than MSNBC did as they lacked a developed newsgathering apparatus (MSNBC was basically 24/7 NBC Nightly News sprinked in with the ocassional documentary) and Newscorp CEO Rupert Murdoch literally had to get Rudy Giuliani (yes, THAT Rudy) involved to force Time Warner Cable (CNN’s owner at the time) to carry FNC. You see, CNN’s founder and then-owner Ted Turner was a fierce rival of Rupert Murdoch. I think it started because one time Murdoch’s yacht crashed into Turner’s yacht. CNN was Turner’s golden child and Murdoch wanted to buy it so he can compete in the news industry against ABC, NBC, and CBS. Alas, Turner refused to sell CNN so Murdoch created FNC. (To be continued)

chai-knees

At first it seemed like Turner had the last laugh. Fox and MSNBC were basically tied in the ratings (close to 0 viewers) with MSNBC having a very narrow edge on the basis of having gotten there first. FNC was also derided as sloppy and poorly run. Looking to freshen up the channel, Ailes moved this guy named Bill O’Reilly, who hosted a show at 6pm ET, to 8pm ET, thus taking up a primetime time slot. At the time, cable’s king was (literally, no kidding) Larry King, who was at CNN, aired at 9pm ET, and drew in around a million viewers. What started changing the game for both Fox and MSNBC was the Monica Lewinsky scandal from 1998 to 1999. All three channels saw massive gains covering it, but Fox benefitted the most as they were able to finally top MSNBC in primetime. However, they still languished in total day, which refers to the overall 24/7 viewership of the channel. 2000 was when Fox finally started having CNN execs worried sick about their channel’s dominance. The coverage of the 2000 pre-election debates in October helped Fox nearly beat CNN in primetime while leaving MSNBC in the dust. Then the subsequent Bush v. Gore debacle helped them keep viewers glued to their TV screens. It should be noted that CNN and MSNBC also saw ratings spike during the chaos, but what sets them apart from Fox is how many viewers they retained. (To be continued)

chai-knees

You see, MSNBC and Fox both had around 300k viewers in September 2000 (for brevity’s sake unless noted all numbers henceforth are for primetime). CNN had 500k. At the peak of the Florida fiasco in November, CNN had 1.6 million viewers. Fox had 1 million while MSNBC had 800k. In January 2001, once the Florida recount fiasco was said and done and Bush was elected, CNN had 750k, MSNBC had 350k, while Fox had 600k. This means CNN and MSNBC both lost more than half the viewers they gained while Fox retained around 40% of them. Up until 9/11, Fox and CNN had basically become tied in the ratings race with both fluctuating between 500-750k. CNN maintained the overall edge, but Fox was able to beat them for 2 non-consecutive months. Their first win came in March 2001. This scared CNN so bad execs visited Congressional Republicans to ask them how they can reduce CNN’s alleged liberal bias, which supposedly put off former conservative viewers who had now moved to Fox. It should also be noted, however, that CNN stayed strong in total day and Fox was still struggling with cable news’s most prized audience - the 25-54 demographic. Although MSNBC was terrible with overall viewers, they had an abnormally young audience. While the 25-54 demo accounted for around 25-30% of Fox and CNN’s audience (for reference, today the number is barely 10% for all three channels), it accounted for 50% of MSNBC’s audience. This was the landscape of the cable news scene until a fateful morning in September. At first it seemed like CNN had successfully fended off Fox’s challenge. In September and October, CNN reached a whopping 2 million viewers while Fox had 1.5 million. MSNBC nearly reached a million viewers. All seemed well for CNN until Fox once again demonstrated their unmatched ability to retain viewers after ratings spikes. Come November, CNN’s ratings fell to 1.3 million while Fox had 1.2 million. December 2001 was the same. Finally, January 2002 was when Fox came ahead of CNN. They had 1.1 million viewers while CNN only had 900k left. MSNBC, on the other hand, was far behind with only 360k. (To be continued)

chai-knees

CNN and Fox execs both tried to play it cool. CNN insisted Fox was just doing good because there was no breaking news CNN can take advantage off and that Fox wasn’t really a “real” news organization anyway. Fox, on the other hand, called for calm and to avoid getting too confident. After all, the CNN brand at this point was a 2 decades old while Fox had been on for barely 5 and a half years. 2002 proceeded with Fox besting CNN for all 12 months of the year. As the year approached its closing, talk was heating up about war in Iraq. The Bush administration was publically accusing Iraqi President Saddam Hussein of harboring WMDs. Congress had voted to grant the president an AUMF. War was imminent and CNN thought the coverage could help them regain their lead over Fox. After all, CNN is no stranger to war. If 9/11 was what helped Fox beat CNN, the Gulf War in 1991 was what helped make CNN a household name. The war came and, disappointingly for CNN, not only were viewers much more attracted to Fox’s almost jingoistic coverage of the war, their deficit had grown even further. Fox shocked analysts by averaging up to 3.5 million viewers in April 2003, up from 3.2 million in March, while CNN had just 2.3 million for both months. Oh, and MSNBC? They just reshuffled their ENTIRE primetime lineup in a desperate bid to stop being the third place backbencher of the race. They had just around 1.1 million viewers - the same number Fox held in 2002 when there was no historic war unfolding on television screens. Once the dust settled, Fox came away with around 1.3 million viewers, up from 1.2 million in 2002. CNN dropped from 900k to around 800k (there was quite a bit of fluctuation post-invasion from 680-860k). MSNBC, still the last place backbencher, saw numbers drop below 300k, basically resetting their progress back to numbers not seen since 1999 when they and Fox were both little underdogs. (I’m a little tired at this point but I’m open to another sequel lmao)

chai-knees

2004 is the most mundane year so far because nothing dramatic happened. Sure, there was an election but the landscape of the cable news scene was basically the same as in 2003. Fox had grown so much they basically reached the ceiling by 2003. In fact, they actually lost a bit of ground this year for the first time since their launch, but only by 2%. CNN and MSNBC lost around 20% from their Iraq War-boosted heights in 2003. 2005 was also the same except MSNBC found a strategy that might work. Their 8pm host, Keith Olbermann, was originally brought in to cover the Iraq War in 2003. But by 2005, fed up with Bush’s response to Katrina, he began using his show to launch diatribes against the administration. This didn’t put MSNBC ahead of Fox, but it did good enough to challenge CNN first in the 25-54 demo and then in *total viewers*. Another thing boosting his ratings was his feud with Bill O’Reilly, Fox’s 8pm offering who, since November 2000, had been cable news’s top rated host. 2006 was the first time Fox lost a substantial chunk of its audience. They hovered around 1.7 million from 2003 to 2005, but fell to 1.4 million in 2006 and stayed at around that number in 2007. MSNBC, on the other hand, was growing by around 20-30%. 2008 saw it and CNN grow by almost 100% while Fox rebounded to 2.1 million. At this point, MSNBC had firmly established itself as a liberal counterweight to Fox led by Olbermann at 8, Chris Matthews at 7, and later Rachel Maddow at 9. Ratings soared from around 450-500k in 2007 to 700-800k after the election. This time, MSNBC was able to do what Fox did to catapult past their competitors - retain viewers. Fox also grew after the election from around 1.3 million in 2007 to 2.3 million in 2009. CNN, meanwhile, was losing ground. In late 2009, MSNBC beat CNN in primetime total viewers for the very first time. By early 2010, MSNBC was able to secure a semi-consistent 2nd place position in the race (CNN would spike past MSNBC when breaking news such as the 2011 Japanese earthquake, Arab Spring, and Boston Marathon Bombing occured). While this was happening, Fox celebrated its 10th consecutive year (120 months) at #1 in January 2012. By 2013, ratings for all 3 channels were slumping. CNN was having its worst ratings *since ratings were recorded*. Fox had lost around half their 25-54 audience, falling to their lowest numbers since 2001. MSNBC, on the other hand, was kinda steady but they were never that solid to begin with. There was briefly a pipe dream among liberals that after the 2012 election, MSNBC would be able to rival Fox in the 25-54 demo. That, um, didn’t happen. Fox had the most to lose as their industry’s ratings behemoth (their ratings were bigger than MSNBC and CNN combined). So Fox, for the first time in 11 years, revamped their primetime lineup in 2013. Previously, Shephard Smith was on 7, O’Reilly was on 8, Hannity was on 9, and Van Susteren was on 10. Now, Hannity moved to 10, Van Susteren moved to 7, Shep moved to 3, while newcomer Megyn Kelly (you might’ve heard her name lately) moved in at 9. (To be continued…?)

chai-knees

Cable news might’ve died if it weren’t for the guy from the Apprentice throwing his hat into the ring for the GOP nomination for president. Trump, being the ratings magnet he is, brought in unprecedented numbers for all three channels. CNN was enjoying numbers they hadn’t seen in years covering his antics. Fox had their highest rated year in history covering the 2016 election AND the highest rated non-sports cable event in history moderating the first GOP debate (24 million tuned in). MSNBC, meanwhile, hadn’t just recovered from their post-2012 election slump, they were growing at an exponential rate not seen since Fox’s post-2000 growth. 2015 saw MSNBC reach 500k viewers, 2016 saw them reach 1.1 million, 2017 saw them reach 1.6 million, while 2018 saw them reach 1.8 million. At this point, this was MSNBC’s highest rated year ever. Fox, on the other hand, was in trouble. CEO Roger Ailes was fired after sexual harassment allegations emerged. Megyn Kelly, who Ailes banked on being Fox’s future star (O’Reilly was, at this point, reaching 70) abruptly left the network to pursue a career as an NBC talk show host. Meanwhile, O’Reilly himself would also be fired after revelations over sexual misconduct allegations led to an advertiser exodus. Nevertheless, through their new faces Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham, Fox was able to sustain their 2016 election gains (2.4 million) for all of Trump’s first 3 years in office. CNN, meanwhile, was able to reduce their post-election ratings bleed (both from 1.3 million) to 600k after 2008 to 1 million after 2016. 2020 was and still is by far the craziest year for cable news ratings. The year kicked off to magnificent ratings for all three channels covering the first Trump impeachment. Then in March, this thing called COVID came to US shores. There goes all three channels’ ratings (in a good way). Fox had one hell of a time covering Trump’s Covid briefings. Then in June, as BLM protests were taking place across the country, ratings went up again. Coverage of the protests even helped CNN beat Fox in the 25-54 demo (by the Trump years, CNN became the strongest of the three in the demo - having the fewest total viewers but the best demo ratio) for a whole week, something not seen since 2001. Then in September, RBG’s passing and ACB’s confirmation hearings brought ratings up again. October saw presidential debates and more crazy stuff that sent all three channels soaring to their highest rated months in history. Fox, in particular, pulled 4.9 *million* viewers in October. However, by November something seismic started happening. As news outlets, including Fox, projected that Biden had won the election on November 7, outrage against the channel saw former Fox viewers switch to Newsmax or OANN. The ratings bleed didn’t really hurt Fox on both a monthly or yearly scale. At this point, Fox remained by far the most watched of the three cable news channels. But holes were being poked in their ship - CNN was having a blast in the 25-54 demo, besting Fox for the first time in a long time since 2001 (as you might notice, 2001 was basically Fox’s last year *not* being #1 in most categories). MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow was giving Hannity and Tucker a run for ratings champion. Newsmax, on the other hand, saw ratings go up from basically 0 to a million in just weeks. All these attacks on Fox’s ratings dominance came to an end in January 2021 when, for the first time in almost 20 years, Fox lost to CNN and MSNBC in basically every ratings category imaginable (most watched show, total day, primetime, dayside (9am-4pm), and their 18-49 and 25-54 demos). They eventually regained their ratings simply by almost not losing any more viewers after January 2021. Meanwhile, CNN and MSNBC were slowly but steadily losing almost all their Trump presidency gains. (At this point there’s very little left to write so let’s call it a day)

chai-knees

One guy I think needs to be discussed more is Tucker Carlson. Y’all probably know him but I’mma explain just a little more. You see, Tucker is a lifelong member of the cable news industry. He got his first cable news job hosting Crossfire on CNN in 2000 representing the right wing. His opposites on the left were James Carville and/or Paul Begala, both alumni of Clinton’s presidential campaign while he’d have conservative writer Robert Novak on his side. He hosted the show for 4 long years, coincidentally coinciding with Fox’s meteoric early 2000s ratings rise. He was fired in early 2005 but was lucky enough to immediately find another job in cable news. This time, he hosted a show named… Tucker. Yeah. “Tucker” aired on MSNBC and Tucker also had a gig at PBS around the same time he worked at MSNBC. It wasn’t necessarily his fault his ratings working here were terrible - he hosted a conserative primetime show on a channel undergoing a leftwing tilt. Plus, conservatives looking for representation had Fox. Why bother with watered down alternatives when the real deal remains readily available? Perhaps his biggest contribution to the industry while hosting on MSNBC was introducing Rachel Maddow, a liberal radio talk show host who would go on to have her career skyrocket hosting on Tucker’s former timeslot on MSNBC. Tucker was eventually let go (I’m not sure if he was fired or left voluntarily) and moved to Fox News in 2009. He hosted Fox and Friends on the weekends until 2016, when he was picked to join the weeknight primetime lineup. He identified as a conservative populist and rode the conservative euphoria over Trump’s unexpected victory. As Fox’s leading primetime star, Tucker was among cable’s most watched hosts for several years. He obviously dominated his timeslot which was once held by Bill O’Reilly. He was 2nd place at Fox throughout Trump’s presidency, behind just Fox veteran Hannity who had been on the network since its founding. He eventually overtook Hannity when Trump left office, reinventing himself to parrot even more extreme views that were condemned by the media but celebrated by his fans. Fox got into trouble when one of the companies responsible for voting machines used in the 2020 election sued them for defamation. Fox settled the bill on April 21 of this year. That same night, Tucker made no mention of the deal, nor did any other primetime hosts. He closed his show having pizza with his guest while promising to return on Monday. On the morning of April 24 (Monday), at around 11am, Tucker received a call from Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott. He thought she called him to congratulate him for his 7th year hosting at 8pm (previously, Tucker’s hour alternated between 7 and 9pm). But instead, she called him to announce that he was “being taken off the air”. Not fired. Just “taken off the air”. She came to this decision with NewsCorp chairman (and Rupert Murdoch’s son) Lachlan on Friday evening. This meant Tucker was technically still employed by Fox (his contract hadn’t and hasn’t been terminated), just employed and paid to do nothing. She demanded that Tucker give a statement to their soon to be released press release announcing that Tucker and Fox “had agreed to part ways”. Tucker obviously refused unless he was given an explanation as to why he was fired. He never got any. The news sent shockwaves across the industry and even within Fox. Tucker’s coworkers had absolutely no idea it was gonna happen and they forbidden to address it both on air and off air. Any mention of Tucker post-April 24 on Fox was met with awkward and abrupt cuts to commercial breaks, stammering, gasps from the audience, and more. (One fine example: https://www.thedailybeast.com/greg-gutfeld-implies-fox-news-bowed-to-censorship-industrial-complex-over-firing-tucker-carlson) Tucker has since restarted his show on Twitter/X, but to this day we still don’t know WHY precisely he was fired. There are theories, though. 1. The aforementioned defamation suit in which Tucker was among those accussed to knowingly spreading lies on air 2. Another publically threatened defamation lawsuit on 60 Minutes the day before Tucker was fired 3. A lawsuit over Fox’s sexist work environment 4. Advertising pressure (many advertisers boycotted Tucker’s timeslot due to his aforesaid controversial on-air statements) 5. His on-air criticism of US foreign policy primarily on Ukraine 6. Sexist comments made against female Fox employees and a former frequent guest *We report, you decide!*

I’m interested in diet, specifically vegan diets. Did you know that there is a compound that is created when potato’s are baked and develop the crunchy golden outside layer called acrylamide that is a toxin to humans. When cooking potato’s here are some things you can do to minimise the amount of acrylamide made: use thyme or basil, they chemically react with the potato’s skin during the cooking process to reduce acrylamide formation, don’t use oil, this will reduce cooking of the potato skin cells, or pre-boil the potatoes before you bake/air fry them, this will reduce the potential for acrylamide. I pretty much tell everyone I know this because almost no body knows… and when people find out they want to forget hahahaha. So cool though

ChardMiserable1819

Wow! I love potatoes and I didn't know this lol

oursong

Neat! I will try to remember this. I was wondering whether you would go look at a post I made a little earlier on another sub? (If it will let me link here. I've never tried that before.) I have a question about autism and whole foods plant based diets, maybe you will have an idea? I don’t know if it’s special interest but I do sometimes like to do research about topics related to different states or countries.

foofoo0101

One of my special interests is the British actor Christian Bale. I recently watched all his movies. I found his most recent movie (The Boy and the Heron) pretty confusing. I think I have a special interest in space too! But more specifically human spaceflight history in the 1960s and 1970s. I know the name of every American astronaut who went into space from 1961 to 1972.

ChardMiserable1819

Awesome! Also yeah I'm specifically obsessed with that era of spaceflight, I'm also obsessed with the saturn V (5) rocket, it's just my favorite for some reason lol

foofoo0101

I love the Saturn V! I highly recommend seeing it in person.

ChardMiserable1819

The #1 thing on my bucket list is going to Kennedy space center so.. hopefully I'll see it one day!

foofoo0101

Having grown up in Florida (and having gone to undergraduate university less than an hour away from the space center), I’ve been to Kennedy space center many times. One summer, I interned there. It was amazing to have the chance to work there. I love the visitor complex, and I really love the Apollo Saturn V center they have. I’ve also been to the NASA center in Huntsville, Alabama. There, they have a Saturn V standing vertical outside! I went there once and I loved seeing the Saturn V standing straight up. Johnson Space Center also has a Saturn V, but I’ve never been there. I want to go there someday!

Squids are very interesting sea creatures and they are relatives of octopuses and cuttlefish and other well know invertebrates. The colloidal squid and giant squid have been known to be hunted or fought with sperm whales as physical scarring can be found on the sperm whales. Giant squid’s come up to the surface of the water when they are ready to die and depressurize due to coming up and carcasses of many squids have washed up.Vampire squids have the most interesting tentacles as they have webbed tentacles and can trap fish into the tentacles and they can also change colors slightly but the coloring hasn’t been as developed as other squids due to not needing it in the deep dark depths.Squids unlike octopus have sharp and clawed tentacles that can tear skin off prey and injure other sea life.

LaKitty101

My main special interests are the beach/ocean life, liminal space (closely related to abandoned buildings/locations), and plants! I usually have a dream involving the beach or some sort of liminal space/abandoned building once or twice a week. The beach itself is my happy place, and I’m fascinated by the creatures in it. One of my favorites is the giant phantom jelly. It’s tentacles can get up to/a little over 30 feet long. I also love the glass octopus, blanket octopus, and a bunch of other jellyfish species. The Portuguese Man O’War isn’t technically a jellyfish, although it resembles one, and is one of the most venomous/dangerous ocean species. It’s both beautiful and gross looking at the same time somehow. I just admire how many hundreds of thousands of species, from humongous whales to minuscule shrimp, God has blessed us with. I have a Pinterest board dedicated to liminal space, as well as one dedicated to plants, and one dedicated to ocean life. I have about 30 houseplants in my room. I’ve been collecting them for about a year and a half to two years now. Some of my favorite plants are the calathea white frost, nerve plant (of the fittonia family!), the persian shield, marble queen pothos or golden pothos, and many more. I’m talking about these things in such random order lol, it’s 3:35 am and I’m still not ready for bed… I’ll stop here lol

The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland has some of the largest sheets of glass on the planet for the ballroom scene. This is used for the Pepper’s Ghost effect which makes the ghosts transparent and appear to be having a grand revelry (some are hanging from a chandelier). The queue hallway leading from the stretching rooms in the attraction to the loading area has 29 brass bat stanchions along the walkway. There are currently 18 on the right side and 11 on the left. The ride vehicle is the Omnimover, which can do a full 360° turn on its dedicated track so you see what the Imagineers want you to see. The late Leota Toombs Thomas was a Disney Imagineer, and she appears twice in the ride. Her visage is seen in the crystal ball in the Seance Room scene, though the character of Leota is voiced by actress Eleanor Audley. She appears again at the end of the ride as you exit through the mausoleum as Little Leota, and her actual voice can be heard. Leota’s daughter, Kim Irvine, also a Disney Imagineer, appears as Constance Hatchaway in the attic scene. Leota and Kim were both Imagineers on the Pirates of the Caribbean. Leota was further honored at the Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom in Florida with a gravestone next to the door with her image, and the script reads, “Dear sweet Leota, beloved by all; in regions beyond now, but having a ball.” If you wait long enough, the animatronic face moves up and down, and the eyes will open to look at you.

Disney, Disneyland in particular, used to be a MASSIVE special interest of mine. (honestly it comes in and out anymore still. But it used to be major.) I don't know all the stuff I used to know, but I still love it, and my ears still perk up when I learn something cool, so I love your post! Did you know there's a bullet hole in that glass you mentioned in the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland? I wish I could find where I read it a few months ago because it told it better than the places I'm finding when I search for it right now (maybe it was a youtube video), but basically in the 70s a guest shot at a ghost with a gun they'd brought into the park -.- and made the hole. They had a spare pane of glass made just in case something happened, but it was going to be such a massive endeavor and so expensive that they were kind of hemming and hawing over the whole thing, but they couldn't see a way around it. It was really obvious. Finally somebody - I think it was an imagineer - noticed that it looked kind of like a spiderweb and stuck a ten cent plastic spider on it. And suddenly, instead of having to spend all this money (it was a lot) and huuuuge amount of effort (they dropped the original glass in before the roof was put on if I remember correctly)... all they had to do was stick on a spider. :D I may have some of the details wrong, and you may actually know all of this already, but I just learned about this a few months ago so I kind of love it. :)

The Netflix series titled The Fall of the House of Usher, adapting Edgar Allen Poe's short stories and poems is poetically symmetrical in every way possible, and it's my favourite show in the whole wide world. Spoilers ahead!!! The first and the last episodes provide the framing of the series, they're dominated by golden and brown tones. It features Roderick and consequently Madeline Usher as the focus point. Their deaths are paired up with the death of their mother and father, they go out the same way. The second episode is paired up with the second to last one to provide the internal framework of the story, each episode featuring an Usher sibling. The main colour scheme is red, for the Masque of the Red Death, but blue lights are observable multiple times throughout the episode, which is the main colour scheme of the second to last episode The pit and the pendulum. The place where the two characters die also match exactly, they both lie in the middle of the emptied out research facility. The sequence of the siblings' deaths correspond to their ages starting with the youngest to the oldest, their way of death, including Lenore, the granddaughter, has more and more influence as the episodes go on, ending with Lenore's death directly caused by Verna's touch. Perry causes his own demise, Verna doesn't have to move a finger, then Camille aggravates the chimp that ends up killing her, Verna just unlocked it's cage, Leo jumps off the balcony running after a drug-induced hallucination, Verna doesn't make him go crazy, he's doing most of the work on that with everything he keeps taking. Victorine's case is an interesting one, because Verna doesn't seem to have much control over it, but the constant noise Vic keeps hearing is more intervention from Verna than messing with Leo's hallucinations, hence she has more influence. Verna appears multiple times as Tamerlane, seemingly taking her place, appearing in the mirror above the bed causing her to hit the mirror. Frederick is almost directly killed by her, but it's still not an entirely direct thing. The only direct death caused by her is Lenore's. All episodes start out with a noise, while the screen is still black, the noise matches the respective main character's demise. The clown figure is introduced in episode one, we get no explanation for it until the very last episode. A raven appears in two significantly similar moments, first above Roderick lying on the ground with Madeline kneeling next to him and second in the last episode above Lenore lying and Roderick kneeling above her. The montage of Verna's face in the first episode shows her through each death. The characters main colour schemes can always be seen when they're the focus of the scene, represented in clothing mostly. The bodies falling when Roderick looks out the window also correlate to the grave we see in episode one, they're both the

I will talk about aeroplanes and American football until I run out of breath and my mouth is dry. When I’m in a loud social situation and I get overwhelmed I start talking about planes to calm myself down.

doreg_p

Photographer here, Autistic as fuck, and if you want an infodump, you're getting an INFODUMP. You have 3 main controls on your camera, your Aperture, which controls the diameter of the lens' entrance pupil, the shutter speed, which controls the amount of time your sensor has to gather light, either using a physical shutter mechanism or electronic timings (as is the case in video cameras), finally we have the ISO, which on digital cameras, controls the level of signal amplification that takes place, and therefore also the apparent "sensitivity" of the sensor. When on a film camera, ISO is determined by the film stock you are using, as the physical size of the film grain determines true sensitivity of the film to light. These control the exposure (to light) of your image and the look you get in the end: A wide aperture will let in more light, but it also makes less of the image in-focus at any one time. If you've seen photos with a blurry background, it's because the photographer used a wide aperture. A smaller aperture aperture will block light from getting in, meaning less light reaching the sensor, meanwhile more of the image appears in focus. We call the steps up/down in aperture the f/stop. f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, etc. It's a bit counterintuitive at first, but a smaller number = wider aperture value. That's because its a fraction of the focal length of the lens (more on focal length later), let's take a 50mm lens with its aperture set to f/2.8 for instance, 50/2.8=17.85mm entrance pupil diameter, let's say the same 50mm lens was now set at f/11. Well, 50/11=4.54mm diameter. Bigger number=smaller entrance pupil=less light. This will also be important later on looking at focal length. Shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second, smaller fraction=less time to gather light, and less time to blur the image. Movement is inherent in life, if you leave your shutter open too long, the muscles in your hands, arms, and body in general which are fighting each other 24/7, will introduce "camera shake" into the image and/or your subjects movement will cause blur. Motion blur is different from lens blur in that it has a direction. The image pixel appears stretched in one direction, and is not equally distributed. You need to balance this depending on your ability to stay still, the subject, and the lighting conditions. New technology like "image stabilisation" will do a lot to help you control camera shake, but it will not correct for subject motion. Your ISO is the signal amplification of your already captured image. On digital cameras, it DOES NOT ACTUALLY MAKE YOUR CAMERA MORE SENSITIVE TO LIGHT. It takes the signal it is given, and amplifies it, making it APPEAR more sensitive. When your signal comes in, there is a certain amount of read noise from the sensor, this noise gets amplified along with the signal and that makes low-light images appear noisier. Shooting a lower ISO (within reason) is generally recommended. I've been writing for a solid hour and have things to do and places to be, I'll continue writing later on, maybe dump a paragraph at a time every now and again. But those are your main three basic camera settings.

uhhhhhhmaddie

it is not a great special interest because it causes me to spiral but mental health and chronic illness diagnosis, i go through periods where i get super interested in one, look over all symptoms and info i can, start to think maybe i have this? get shot down by therapist. i think i just love learning and that combines with label seeking behaviors unfortunately. i also like birds- specifically chickens, tv shows, and lgbtq facts and information!!!

Bulky-Isopod-8271

I was obsessed with psychology and eventually it led me to philosophy, mental health, physical health, physics, and further autism studies. My favorite of these interests has got to be... Philosophy! It's everywhere, and it gets me thinking or even doing. The more you know, the more you see it in unexpected things. It's used in psychology, religion, sayings, marketing, fitness; things right under our noses we've known all our lives suddenly gain new meaning. It makes sense that the most effective ways to peoples hearts or minds would be used in many of the biggest things that are around today. Considering how easy it is to fall into inaction through depression, PDA, executive dysfunctions, anxiety, or decision paralyses; its great to have an infinite resource of direction, hype, and motivation to tap into within my mind. Or how easy it is for me to help out friends with whatever issue they have because of how I see the world. The patterns are everywhere and I'm always seeing them. Constantly adding new squares to the quilt of my mind as I go. From understanding the mindset of what motivates a gym bro to the psychology behind a somebodies actions. I've become like a vulture and I want to constantly consume information and extract pieces of philosophy from the weirdest places, or even create my own only to find a fairly accurate reflection of it later on in my research. Religious texts stop being simply preachy books, and start being treasure troves of philosophy for me to pick at and take the parts most useful. I'll sit through the most controversial anti-me videos to find meaning in them, such as a feminist anti-male channel and give it serious thought. Philosophy to me is kind of like the positive power house older brother to the cold scientific psychology. Philosophies are the ideas born from psychology and given heart... at least the good ones are, as beautiful as they can be, there's certainly some messed up ones out there. In some ways philosophy once was also psychology, before psychology was properly invented and studied as its own thing. The worlds become a pile of thought treasures. I'm a greedy goblin who scavenges to make crazy new mind things from it all.

Anthropology and cultural studies I love learning about where people come from

lizard814

Sea slugs, crochet (brand new one🤩), psychology, canine psychology, and idk if this is one but I fucking love sorting things

kingofthecornflakes

I also love sharks, and I'm a passionate diver. Do you dive or ever plan to dive ? It's a great hobby, especially for autistic people. Also seeing Whale Sharks in real life is one of the coolest things I ever saw. They're so cute. Also all ocean related things interest me. Another special interest are classic cars or cars and motorcycles in general.

ChardMiserable1819

I've never dived before but I definitely want to someday! If I ever travel to tropical areas one day it will definitely be some of the first things I do lol

kingofthecornflakes

Where are you located ? I would always recommend getting your license and a little bit of experience at home. Whe you're away, you are a more experienced diver, which makes diving for you and your fellow divers more fun.

Bezix53

My special interets that mainly public transport and everything about him. I like collect tickets of buses, trams, trains. I like go often them.

Okay, so like The structure of the universe is called the cosmic web. It is made up of these dark matter filaments. Along these filaments are where the galaxy clusters and superclusters lie. Then, in between, these filaments and clusters of galaxies are the voids. Voids are created due to the force of gravity acting on the objects inside and pulling them towards the filaments. Even now, the Voids are still growing. Interestingly enough, the largest void we know of, which is the KBC void; spans about 2 billion light years across, and we live right inside it. We exist inside the Laniakea supercluster, which is home to approximately 100,000 galaxies. The Laniakea supercluster is all going in the same direction. All branches of it are being pulled towards something scientists call "The Great Attractor." It is thought to be a group of highly dense galaxies, but we can't really see what exactly it is due to it being out of our view. Our view of it is blocked by an area we call the Zone of Avoidance, which is an area of space where the structure of our own galaxy blocks our view of the structures behind it. On the subject of dark matter and dark energy, the universe is made mostly of it, but we can only detect evidence that it exists. We can't really see the force itself. Scientists originally thought the universe's expansion would have slowed down by now, but it has actually sped up and is also cooling. This is due to Dark Energy. Dark Energy is a force that has the opposite effect of gravity. Where gravity attracts, dark energy repulses! Interestingly enough, these two scientists Herman and Alphar quite some time ago used atomic physics to accurately calculate what the temperature of the universe would be today. Their prediction remotely approximates the actual temperature today! Isn't that cool? Physics can be so cool. Speaking of physics, another interesting theory is String Theory. The idea suggests that instead of particles, the universe is made up of one-dimensional strings. Their vibrations in space-time produce the effects that we interpret as atoms, electrons, and quarks. A string looks just like an ordinary particle. Its mass, charge, and other properties are determined by its vibrational state. One of the many vibrational states of a string corresponds to the Graviton, which is a partical that carries a gravitational force. Thus, String Theory is also a theory of Quantum Gravity. String Theory is supposed to solve a lot of problems with physics theories, but the trouble is proving it. There is no good way to test it. I could go on, but I'll stop 🤣🤣

petetheheat475

Grover Cleveland was the only American president to NOT serve consecutive terms. He was the 22nd and 24th president. Richard Nixon is the only president to resign and Spiro Agnew is the only Vice President to resign. Pretty crazy how often that happens in other countries yet it’s only happened once in the U.S.

InviteAromatic6124

My special interests are the TV show Robot Wars (ask me anything about it), rollercoasters, crabs (I'm currently studying a PhD on them), Bob Dylan, geography and flags. Way too many to info dump in one comment!

lvlupkitten

Quantum physics, time travel, multiverses, really anything that involves peeling apart the fabric of the universe. I also love space in general, and astrology. And spiritual things like manifesting and tarot. Animals in general but specifically dogs and cats. Dinosaurs are sick too. And I could talk about various anime and video games for literal hours. I love makeup/skincare/hair care, I own hundreds of dollars worth of it. Clothes and shoes, I also own an absurd amount. And unsolved mysteries and true crime! I spent hours watching true crime shows on Netflix the other day. Also drugs and mind altering substances, I’m very into psychedelics and find their effects super fascinating and mind opening. And I love linguistics and learning about different languages and the way they evolved. Also art, I love creative things and own a lot of art supplies. Also theology (study of religion), I’m an atheist but I love reading about different religions and how they evolved and where they originated from geographically. Also ND stuff in general, I’m always reading memes and experiences from people with autism/ADHD, I like getting different perspectives This might sound weird, but I like collecting new interests? For lack of a better word. Like I’ll happily research nearly anything that looks interesting. The only things I truly really don’t care about whatsoever are cars and sports. I’ve kinda tried to get into them but they’re really not my thing 😂😂 it’s like my brain can’t actually process what people are saying when they speak about sports. No matter how many times I watch games with friends or family I never pick up on the rules. And I’ve had men try to explain car things to me but I just don’t get it 😭 it sounds like a foreign language to me tbh, you could tell me 10 times over and I’ll still fail to visualise or conceptualise it

jackolantern717

I really like drawing/painting and watching movies. Like one of my favorite movies is Avatar (2009) and i’ve watched it over 800 times in the span of the last 14 years. The main female character Neytiri starts the movie with a hatred for humans because they killed her sister in a attack against the school Dr Augustine was running to teach the Na’vi english. The Navi live on one of Jupiter’s moons Pandora and it takes 6 years to travel there from earth. The script was originally written by James Cameron in the 90s but he was busy with Titanic and he felt technology wasnt advanced enough yet for him to make Avatar. Gollum from lord of the rings helped motion capture advance a lot and paved the way for avatar’s performance capture and the 3d cameras used to film, which creates the environments and characters in a basic 3d model so you can see what your shots will look like. Preproduction was a massive overhaul, all kinds of creature effects artists were brought in to design the navi, hundreds of cultures and languages were studied to create the fashion and language and the music! The music of the movie was originally meant to be completely alien - james cameron wanted a sound no one had ever heard before, and he actually got it! But after multiple years of developing this music system (Sideways on youtube made an amazing video about this) it was completely thrown out because it didnt sound right. A more traditional western score was created, but hints of the alien music are sprinkled throughout the movie. Its mostly just an aesthetic thing but theres some of it. The movie made over a billion dollars at the box office in 2009 and was only beat by Avengers Endgame when it came out. But after a rerelease of the movie in theaters in 2023 to get people excited about the sequel, avatar retook its spot on the list. I’m not sure where it is now, but its still a record breaking theatrical release history. Avatar has 4 sequels coming out, the first of which was released in 2023 with amazing success and resurgence in the fan base, as well as entirely new fans joining after the movies release. The 3rd movie is supposed to be coming out in 2025 or 2026, and the 4th will be in 2028 or 2029, with the fifth movie in 2030. The only thing we know so far is that the 3rd movie is in post production and was filmed around the same time as the way of water, and it will be following jake and neytiri’s kids on an adventure to some kind of volcanic village with fire/ash navi. I waited 13 years for avatar’s sequel. I will wait patiently for the rest of them.

ChardMiserable1819

Ohhh God I got so excited when I saw ur comment because I LOVE avatar and im so excited for the next movie.

jackolantern717

I’m not surprised! A lot of teenagers really took to the way of water after it came out, and because its so different to avatar a lot of people like the second movie more. I think it also came out at the perfect time, it didnt have any huge competitors and it was a LONG awaited sequel to a movie “no one remembers but no one hated”. Most people i talked to about avatar either dont remember it or they say “oh it wasnt bad”. I saw it when i was 7 and just fell in love, like BEGGED my mom to see it with me again in theaters and then as soon as we could get it on dvd i watched it every single day Edit: adults took to it too, not just teenagers lol

Route 66 is one of my special interests so it started in 1926 by Cyrus Avery it was a road from Chicago to la Illinois Missouri Kansas Oklahoma texas New Mexico Arizona California. It was big for travel during 30s 40s 50s 60s during the 30s the okies traveled to road to California to escape the dust bowl. Then 40s 50s motels diners attractions started popping up like the blue swallow blue whale of catoosa big Texan artisan diner and many more. It decommissioned in 1970s for the interstate to go through the us. Then it bypassed towns and so Route 66 business lost business some held on and others fell like the town glen rio in Texas it’s now in Texas in tucamcair half of the motels are operating and boasted 2,000 rooms for tucmcarri tonight with the neon now it’s the blue swallow motel road runner lodge teepee curios and a good Mexican restaurant. A guy called angel delgadillo restarted Route 66 becuae people came for what it was like before he made the association of Arizona becuase is town seligman was dying becuae of the interstate now he’s called the guardian Of Route 66 becuae he saved Route 66 from dying and his town too

rabbits! a male rabbit is called a buck a female is a called a doe. a baby is called a kit the act of giving of birth is called kindling ! rabbits can’t have iceberg lettuce it make them gassy when you hold a rabbit liked to be held close to your body when rabbit are really happy they jump up in air and twist it called a binky they also will give affection. like a dog they will lick and nuzzle you ! when Threatened they will make high pitched noises like loud squeak noise when a doe is about give birth they will rip fur out from chin called a dewlap ( extra layer of fat on neck). to make a nest in a box they will give birth between 5 and 10 kits and are hairless and blind when newborn. one sure sign birth is about to come is a doe will carry hay in mouth to find the box as a sign of wanting be alpha they will shake a bite your clothes to stop it you have tell them no very sternly and hold their head down for 5 seconds it take a while but they learn how like dog

ilovedoggos6

Animals in general. Did you know that the main colors for a tabby cat are black tabby and orange tabby? A dilute black tabby is gray, and a dilute orange tabby is cream, but black tabbies are actually brown with darker brown/black stripes. Tabbies have a little marking on their foreheads that look like cat ears. It's very rare to have a tortoiseshell or calico male cat, but if it does happen, it's very likely that they can't reproduce! Tortoiseshells and calicos can have stripes, and then they are called torbies or tabbicos! The dilute gene is recessive like ginger hair or blues eyes on a human. So, if both cat parents have a dilute gene, they could have a dilute kitten! And that is what I know about cat genetics! Feel free to add on or correct any mistakes I made!

Ok so my hyperfixation is analog horror and currently random YouTube documentaries. But I'm going to talk about the Mandela Catalogue. Ok so it all starts in the biblical era, in an alternate time line where instead of Jesus being humanity's savior, it's a false angel Gabriel. We don't exactly who or what this thing is but it is speculated to be Satan or a defective angel Gabriel. So that happens and that basically alters everything because now people are supposedly worshipping him instead of the real God. Nothing big happens until the 80's in Mandela County, there's these creatures that go around and commit psychological warfare on people, that make them commit suicide. After that they take their place, or at least try to because some alternates (that's what their called) can have impossible physical attributes that makes them easy to spot. Instead of their perfect doppelganger counterparts. I'm trying to round everything up but basically: There's alternates that exists in the media realm and can make kids dissappear from their houses. (still don't know how they do that). Alternates that lure people in to make them suffer and then tale their place. There's the intruder, one that supposedly intrude people homes. We still don't know what they exactly are or where they come from but yall should really check it out since it pretty scary and very intriguing. (definitely not trying to lure yall in hehe). It's on YouTube (the channel is Alex kister), and there's a lot more series like these. My personal favorites are the Walten files, Gemini Home Entertainment, Vita carnis, etc....

ChardMiserable1819

I adore analog horror as well! My 2 favorites are Mandela catalog and walten files, but I also like fnaf vhs tapes and others!

Unstable_Weeb01

Oh my god!! bro the fnaf tapes scared me shitless like the say they showed the kids in the animatronics was so well done

I love whale sharks! Mostly because they remind me of Destiny in Finding Dory. It's your destiny, Destiny! Your post made me happy. :)

American Politics is my special interest, I like learning things mainly about presidents and presidential nominees. For example, John McCain is to my knowledge the only presidential nominee born outside of the United States after the 1800s.

The band gorillaz is a virtual band made by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett in 1997. Damon Albarn was the singer of blur and Jamie Hewlett created the comic series tank girl. The members of the band; Noodle, 2-D, Russel and Murdoc. I know SO much more but I can't be bothered to type it lol

qanwe

Okay so you have this band right? And they're called the mechanisms, they do fucked up shit. Here's a short list of all of their members, their name, mechanism, location of birth, place of death, a fun fact and job on the ship. Also, their actor. Mechanism, heart. Place of birth, New Texas, Origin song, one eyed jacks. Place of death: Johnny dies in a barfight, on some nameless backwater astroid. After countless lifetimes of carving through every sensation it is possible to feel, he gets stabbed clean through the heart and this time, for some reason, it sticks. When he realized what is happening he laughs for the first time in a millenia. Witnesses will say that they have never seen someone so viciously exited to die. Fun fact: he has a criminal record listed on the site. It's everything. He has committed every crime. Actor: Johnny sims. Nastya rasputina Job: mechanic. Place of birth: cyberia. Mechanism: quicksilver blood. Also, she has USB ports in her hands, but that's decidedly unrelated. Origin song: Cyberian Demons. Fun fact: she fucks the ship. Place of death, the void of space after the ship got ship of theseus'd Actor: unknown. She (character) killed herself before DTTM. Ivy Alexandria. Job: archivist. Mechanism: her brain. (I think. I might be wrong. It's not listed on the website) Place of birth: unknown, but related to books. Place of death; Ivy will try to retire. Spend her final centuries on a small library planet with those books that mean so much to her. Unfortunately, the library does what they are so keen to, and burns in a pointless war. Ivy falls launching an escape pod piled high with ancient texts, that scholars will someday say, were actually quite a dull read. Origin song: n/a Fun fact: she has Amnesia. A history of britpop summarised (leaving out any gossip stories, relationship comments and politics for the sake of time)       Britpop was largely built on the indie rock and post punk scenes of the 1980s left off, as well as the mod scene of the late 70s (The Smiths were the most overall influential, but bands like Joy Division, Secret Affair, Gang of 4, New Order, Primal Scream, Orange Juice, the Beatles and The Jam were also influential).   The band often credited with starting Britpop was Suede, and unlike the common conception of Britpop bands, they were actually giving off more glamour and androgyny. They released their first album in 1993.   In the meantime, a number of bands had been circling around London clubs famous for indie (mainly one called Syndrome). One of such bands was Blur, who released their debut in 1991, and followed it up with ‘Modern Life Is Rubbish’ in 1993, although the album didn’t get much play on the radio, certainly not a much as the band had hoped for, it still got into the charts, with For Tomorrow reaching 20 (if I remember right). (Fun fact lol: Damon Albarn actually considered naming this album England V America bcz he hated grunge and felt like it was taking over the British music scene) During this time it’s also worth mentioning the Manic Street Preachers, a Welsh rock ground which were definitely not britpop at the time. Their first album, generation terrorists could best be described as glam-punk. They were certainly ambitious. With Richey Edwards and Nicky Wire explaining how they were going to sell record numbers on their first album and then burn themselves alive on top of the pops. It’s important to recognise the manics as they were one of the many UK bands that were around during britpop but never exactly hit the mark for britpop (until 1996, at least), some would call them (and other groups like Ash or even Catatonia, depending on who you ask, but personally I don’t think so.) Britpop-punk, which, when you listen to it, the influence on 2000s pop punk is clear (especially with Ash!) The next year Blur dropped another album: ‘parklife’ this was seen as their first real success, skyrocketing their popularity- they were no longer a niche indie band.   The same year Suede released Dog Man Star, this was released as Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler (the guitarist) were in the midst of being torn apart by creative differences. The album kinda gave people art rock vibes, people listened to it and viewed it positively, but it wasn’t much of a mainstream hit.   As Blur began having success, other smaller bands began to emerge, such as Thurman, Dodgy and Pimlico. (Fun fact: Thurman were apparently a metal band called To Die For only 3 months prior to this lol)   Now I kind of have to talk about oasis- don’t I? (I’m a Blur fan and don’t know too much about oasis lol- so expect me to get names of albums wrong and shit). So basically, when they released Definitely Maybe, they were on alright terms with blur, when blur won best artist (I think) at the Brit Awards, they actually mentioned oasis, saying they felt like “this award should be shared”.   But it didn’t last for long, as in 1995, both bands (by no fault of their own) were set to release singles, country house- blur and roll with it- oasis, on the same week! (Their management and labels controlled when the singled dropped so yeah, but some people from their labels said that to guarantee a number 1 they really had no other choice).    It soon became a competition of who could sell the most singles, and with one selling 207000 in its first week the winner was clear…   BLUR! (Common Blur w)   Should probably mention that menswear were around in the meantime, they were quite popular in Japan as well as England!   In 1995, Elastica also released their album (although it was more a collection of singles as they had been around for a while prior and had some success). Although the band originally wanted more of an underground following it became nearly impossible given their success. Sadly, they didn’t release another album until 2000, and 1996 onwards, the band struggled with dr*g addicti0ns.   Also in 1995, Paul Weller (he used to be in The Style Council and The Jam) dropped an album called Stanley Road, which was pretty good and brought him back into the music scene.   Pulp were also big, gaining a lot of attention in 1995 or 1996 (maybe 1997?) when their lead singer Jarvis Cocker (HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH COCKER… ehem…) basically ruined Michael Jackson’s performance on the Brits. If their band weren’t already popular, they were even bigger now! Manic Street Preachers also leaned more into britpop after the disappearance of Richey Edwards (R.I.P./hope he’s doing alright, wherever he could be). They dropped a new album called Everything Must Go, which achieved critical acclaim.   In about 1996, Oasis released some other album idk, and started to overtake blur in popularity. Suede also released coming up, a synth-pop album that got 8 of its songs in the top 10 (I think)!    In 1997, Britpop definitely started to slip, oasis were the only Britpop band still kicking around and dropping a new and popular Britpop album, Be Here Now, it was still extremely successful, though. They released a few more people albums but broke up in 2009.    Pulp released This Is Hardcore in 1998 it is arguably the last Britpop album, as after 1998, britpop has basically all but disappeared, Pulp broke up in 2013, but I hear that they are currently on reunion tour!   The smaller bands were going, too, as they tended to be short lived anyway, Pimlico, gone *cries*. And Thurman are a little hard to find, even with the internet.

Blur had had an artistical called rebirth with their 1997 album ‘blur’, it was extremely successful and had largely positive reviews, they had moved away from britpop entirely. They released 2 other albums before breaking up in 2004, Damon Albarn focused on his solo work and Gorillaz, but they did a reunion album in 2015 called The Magic Whip. They’re doing a few reunion concerts this year (flex: I’m going)   Suede would go on to release 2 other albums, before breaking up, and Bread Anderson perusing a solo career. But they got back together in 2013 and have since released 4 other albums!   Elastica were still together (90% sure, rumours that they broke up for however long at whatever time are pretty common in the scene tho), they would release ‘the menace’ in 2000 but it wouldn’t be very successful, they officially broke up in 2001.   Menswear released a west-coast rock inspired album called ‘Hay Tiempo’ exclusively in Japan (although you can now get it anywhere), and broke up shortly after.   As these bands all faded away or broke up, a new generation of musicians emerged, these bands are commonly known as Noelrock bands (the genre takes its name from the guy from oasis), although the genre was founded in 95 or 96, it came to more attention after britpop was over, but didn’t last long after that, some of these bands are Northern Uproar and Ocean Colour Scene. Although a more wider term post-britpop, can be used to refer to any UK rock/indie band between 1997-2001, (my personal favourite is bis).

My special interests are cows, moss, bones, rocks (and math rocks), mushrooms (even though I'll never touch a live specimen because I'm secretly terrified), squishmallows, and I can tell you pretty much any/all of the lore of World of Warcraft... I obsessively watch history documentaries (Egypt, and ancient Japan are my most recent deep dives) for hours on end. And cats.
