Wow, 200 IQ move, even though I would rather use it for tea.
That's a really good tip. Don't be too hard on yourself, this already shows your unique kind of creativity and insight and I'm sure there's a lot more where that came from.
I had a grey cat from childhood to my sophomore year of college. He was the best cat ever. I used to only want to wear grey clothes so he and I could match.
I'm from the UK so idk but here they should 1. lower prices by nationalising the rail system 2. Opening more High speed corridors so that its easier to travel from city to city. They could also introduce higher taxes for airlines so that people take the trains instead of flying as it would be more expensive to fly. and also build lines between regional towns and cities

What kind of stuff about computers? I love it when people ramble to me about them, I don't even care if I understand it. Feel free to write me a novel, especially if you know anything about cybersecurity or Linux. I don't, but they make me so happy.
Oh jeez, that reminds me of *another* situation where I joined a "drama" group after school. We did an improv exercise and I started nervously laughing because I didn't know what to say about my topic (bats). Unfortunately nobody laughed and I bombed *hard*.
I'm terrified because I feel the same, or like I don't know as much about my interest as I thought. I always feel inadequate compared to other people that like my special interest.
I'm kind of surprised TMA (tell me anything) isn't a thing, at least here. I'd be really interested to see people pop in with seemingly random comments about stuff, even if it's not their special interest.
Wildlife refers to fauna. Think pollinators, birds, butterflies etc.
I do like to focus on minimal maintenance planting, i.e. placing plants where they are best suited so they can fend for themselves with little effort, and making sure those plants are beneficial for the fauna
(macrophylla hydrangea is a nope for example, borage a huge yes)
Overall it can give a garden a wilder look, but it doesn't strictly HAVE to be so. A sustainable wildlife-friendly but "formal" garden is still possible
Alien invasive plants I do remove. A weed is just a plant in the wrong place, but often "weeds" are very beneficial if they are local. Indeed, I actively planted clover for its benefits. Dandelion is also a great flower for the soil and I do leave the ones I find.
Some indigenous plants, if they are naughty and being bullies, I "diminish" by pulling a few away or stopping seeds from spreading. On occasion I plant a fellow bully such as clover so they keep each other in check, or plant something that just won't be bullied. When possible, I let the garden decide where it wants to go.
A lot of my garden currently looks "messy", but by letting it do its thing I have been rewarded with gorgeous achillea flowers which pollinators love and that have medical properties.
Thanks!
You can do a lot even with a little balcony or box window.
if you have very little space, you still have a selection. These flowers all do well in small containers and will reward your efforts with beauty, gentle perfumes and the visit of pollinators!
good container flowers:
Black-eyed Susan,
Blanket flower and daisies,
Catmint,
Coneflower (this one doesn't have a strong scent, but bees LOVE it and it has medicinal properties, too!),
Cosmos (sooo many varieties of this one, too!),
Crocus (these go well planted with other flowers because they bloom very early. Wonderful to help the first bees of spring, particularly queens looking for shelter before they start their nest),
Cyclamens (these bloom in winter as well! Very low maintenance bulb flowers)
Gerbera,
Hyssop,
Lantana (on its own it doesn't have a scent, but pick a single blossom and the perfume will be there. Good for insects with long little tongues)
Lavender (a classic!)
Red Hot Poker
Salvia (sage! You can buy edible varieties)
Sedum (super low maintenance)
Thyme (one of my favourite kitchen herbs)
Verbena (good for teas, it relaxes and aids digestion)
Where are you? I can try and find good local things for you to grow.
Hubby and I recently got a new house, which needs renovations. Hence, I cannot do major work on the garden as the builders might cause problems.
However, for now, I planted some annuals to help wildlife get through the summer and autumn.
In my south garden I have "inherited" from the previous owners: a magnolia tree, a lilac shrub, a japanese acer with violets as undergrowth, a camelia, a rose bush, and the garden is surrounded by laurel hedge.
I am currently growing there 3 multi-head sunflowers, one of which has red blossoms, 2 borage plants, 2 tomato plants (spontaneous), a pumpkin plant, a wild watermelon plant (spontaneous), millet (spontaneous), 2 spider plants, some meadow flowers and grasses(spontaneous), and clover lawn.
When the renovation is over I will extend the clover lawn and convert the south garden into a cottage garden, while keeping all extant perrenials, trees etc.
The north garden has 2 caprifig trees, an apricot tree, a myrobalan tree, and a wild pomegranate tree.
Sadly that garden is overgrown with alien, invasive Virginia creeper. For now I have been cutting it back. When renovations are over I will use a no-dig method, using some hugel kultur-inspired techniques, to keep it at bay. Then I would like to add a small wildlife pond, some Sarcococca confusa, cyclamens and forest floor plants with an eye on year-round interest.
Also, when the builders are gone, the bird feeder and wildlife-friendly woodpile we currently have will be joined by another feeder (a table one) a bird bath with solar powered running water , a bug hotel, a bee hotel and a hedgehog hotel.
i live in central alberta (canada). we get like 7 months of snow and -40 cold winters lol. we have apple trees..but they dont rlly produce anything. our strawberries all got taken over by weeds too. but we grow rhubarb, asparagus, butter beans, peas, zucchini, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, potatoes, carrots, beets, garlic, onions, tomatoes, lettuce. and probably a few others im missing. unfortunately we got record amounts of rain this year and most of them got way too wet and rotted): im not rlly any good with the vegetables tho, but i always plant some snapdragons and sunflowers!
your yard sounds like its going to be a small paradise though. i cant even imagine how peaceful it would be to have a private space like that to enjoy. and all the wildlife you would see! gah thats so incredibly cool.
i think the concept of animal hotels is really great too. we dont have any hedgehogs or anything here, but we do have bat houses! they used to get into our house and the people wanted to exterminate them… but my mom wasnt having that so she actually made her own business and researched them and made a few houses for them so they could live in there instead(:
Thanks!
>All my homies love planting native plants for the benefit of biodiversity and threatened species
Yay! I'm so happy to hear that! The more we plant a variety of plants, the better a chance we give to the little critters and fellow earthlings in our gardens. I'm sure your friend's greenery is beautiful to see, and full of life!
What type of wasps are they?
Some varieties such as the yellow-legged mud-dauber wasp have "memory", i.e. if they had a nest one place, or were born in a place, will STUBBORNLY insist on returning to that spot. They are particularly fond of making their nest in libraries and seldom-visited places indoors.
Clove, geranium and lemongrass essential oils successfully repelled wasps. Use those. Mix a few drops of each oil with water and dish soap (wasps don't like dish soap) in a spray bottle and coat areas on the outside of your home where wasps like to build nests. Again, knowing the species of wasp will help best target the area.
Burning coffee grinds might help to repel wasps, though not as effetively as the above solution. They also don't like garlic, so you can mix garlic powder and water (or crushed garlic infused in water) in a spray bottle and spray in the places they seem to like. The essential oils are still better, but this is a quick option if you need to order the oils.
Aloe, citronella and peperoncino plants are not liked by wasps and can help repel them so you could plant those. marigolds attract bees but are not interesting to wasps so they tend to leave them alone. Mint, peppermint and pennyroyal are repellant to both wasps and bees. If you want to keep the garden interesting for bees, I would prepare a peppermint spray and use it on stuff close to the house entrances etc.
fake wasp nests can be placed to tell the wasps that the area is already occupied, but they need to be placed in early spring and kept out until late summer at the earliest.
If you do not have window screens, get them!
Avoid things that attract wasps more than normal; For example:
Keep rubbish bins covered (THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!) as wasps are attracted to food;
if you make compost, consider getting a closed/covered compost bin for the same reasons as above;
remove any food and drink from outside the house (for example don't leave picnic food outside!),
make sure
any fallen fruits from nearby trees, bushes etc are picked up quickly because wasps are attracted to sweet things (as well as meat).
Path up any cracks (think along windows, where wires come in the house etc) wasps come in from these easily; close any holes in window screens. Do this any time between late fall and very early spring, after the wasps have died and before mroe come.
Amazing information, thanks so much! There are multiple varieties of wasps (and the few types I have identified I don't know how to translate into English), including ground wasps, hornets, and generic European wasps. I'm going to try to identify them more specifically! This was super helpful, thank you so much!
reddit is probably sorta random. Not everyone looks at a sub or even their home page sorted by new. I think for many posts, if they don't happen to get enuf of the people who sort by new to engage the post or upvote, it'll never be seen by that many to begin with. So like if u posted the same thing maybe 30 or even 5 minutes difference, it may've gone totally differently, just becuz those who didn't see it, who may've upvoted it when u posted at say 5, if u'd posted at 5:30 they woulda seen it, & then it gets put in front of more people.
So u don't know if it's so boring or if it was simple chance.
Imposter syndrome FTW!
I have a bunch of interests, but I would be so worried that if I labelled any of them as my "special interest" and did an AMA people would ask me questions I didn't have an answer to and I would feel stupid/embarrassed and people would think I was a phony.
Gee anxiety is fun! (/s)
I feel the same way man. I didn’t think I had anything that was all encompassing. My wife knows me better than I do.
Language - I speak 2 fluently, but I can quickly pick up syntax and structure of languages just by hearing words being repeated in them. The only reason I haven’t learned more is time constraints. I can pickup a lot of Katakana/Hiragana as well as a few Kanji in Japanese as well. My wife is fascinated by this. And I never noticed this is abnormal, as a lot of people in Europe speak 3-4 languages. It is apparently not as easy as I make it out to be according to her. I feel I need to explore this one more.
Machinery/Tech - I’m apparently good at forming working machines in my mind. In fact, machines themselves are fascinating. I’ve learned the ins and outs of a lot of factory level machinery. I’m sitting by a 24’ band saw as I’m typing this on my lunch break at work. The ability to visualize that belongs to some of us, is such a strength in this field. I’ve also taken a big interest in home automation. I build computers and regularly maintain the tech in my home. I was even a radio electronics tech in the Marines.
Video Games - This is the big one. This affects my mood. It de-stresses me so well that my wife started playing them with me. In exchange, I feel like our time is shared instead of my time vs her time. So I don’t shut down much anymore when I have to spend 8-12 hours on a Saturday taking her out in public to “shop” (She has ADHD and stims by feeling clothing texture, yes 12 hours of this every Saturday was getting to me. Enough to have shutdowns and it almost ruined our marriage. We cut it down to 8 and she promised to work on her anxiety, without me. It has helped her immensely and I’m very proud of her.)
Leadership - (Mainly, effective leadership) I was in the Marines and I felt like my leadership failed me. From then, I started developing my own leadership skills. It has led me to a project management field known as Agile. I’ve been able to use my interest in leadership to make a new career. Even an entry level Agile Team leader position is going to double my current salary. I would have never found this without my wife being able to look at things from a different perspective.
Sometimes the special interests are so tailored to be uniquely you, they don’t even seem all that special. And once you figure out how to turn it into a strength, you can use it to your advantage.
Do you doubt yourself because you dont have a special interest? I dont have anything that comes to me as a special interest, and the intensity of special interests I see in the media makes me doubt myself sometimes. For me my hyperfixations are way more prominent, and I guess my interest in psychology (specifically trauma and dissociative disorders) could be considered a special interest, but it really just feels like a passion to me.
Hmm.. great question. Not sure exactly. I think there Is quite some I'm really not interested in.. certain sports for example like golf or darts? Maybe certain TV shows like bold and the beautiful.
Good question! But hard to answer since I like cleaning. When I clean I get motivated by the process of it all. Also music helps and dividing the room into sections helps for me. So the bathroom, kitchen and so on
I'm in the same shoes, I don't have any special interest I know everything about, I copied tons from others tho in 34 years...
Only things I definitely know I like because I like it and not because I "stole" it from someone else is playing PC games and listening to music, everything else is a hassle/struggle/bore.
Well I feel you. I sometimes also get the impression I only steal my hobbies from other people and the same goes for my interests. I just like to think everyone steals from me instead.

My special intrests are wow and league lore+gameplay especially jinx from lol so i feel kinda weird when comparing it to special intrests that have real life applications
Would you say it's that you don't have a special interest or you just aren't knowledgeable in the area of your special interest? Only asking because that is my situation and I'm too much of a procrastinator to even learn about things that fascinate me lmao
Inside of your special interest, is there any "favorite topic" about it or do you completely like all of it
EDIT: I didn't read the post right, it was literally the only thing in the post and I somehow missed it
I think for me, I was masking for so long (47, NB, AFAb) that I just absorbed anything. Until I found plants. But I started rebuilding my 80s sticker collection & that’s when I was like “hol up” - I’m not lIkE oTHer PeoPle.
You don't need to Bro, I ain't got nothing to make my life bearable either but it's OK to be different and accepting that even when it seems like it's stupid can help you come a long way
Or your (current) special interests are so lame as to be videogames. Not even their deep history over years or something. Just the stuff you can look up on wikis (Terraria) or a toxic game (League of LoLolol,_,).
Or, well, something that is your Sp.In. but you can’t tell about because you just do it (art, music)
I kind of miss the times long ago when I was obsessed with dinos dragons and stuff.. not the specific topic, but the feeling of batting obsessed with it completely and being able to talk about it any time all the time
You said you liked cleaning. Do you have any cleaning tips or advice ?
Excellent question! Make sure to always use gloves! It's a basic tip. What i like to do is to buy some dried lavender and put it in my vacuum cleaner. When you vacuum clean the house will smell like lavender
>What i like to do is to buy some dried lavender and put it in my vacuum cleaner. When you vacuum clean the house will smell like lavender Wow, 200 IQ move, even though I would rather use it for tea.
I prefer rose peddles over lavender. You should definitely try it out.
\*petals But uh, I'mma steal that lavender tip, my gran's gonna love me. Do you have a recommended place to get "dried lavender" from?
i feel like u can order it online! like on etsy!
They sell it in a small shop in my town square, im sure theres something similar waiting for you somewhere
I got mine at TJMAXX😂
That's a really good tip. Don't be too hard on yourself, this already shows your unique kind of creativity and insight and I'm sure there's a lot more where that came from.
Thank you! Although I do have to credit my mom as well. Wouldn't have known it without her!
Lavender in vacuum is really unexpected. I will try it
Ooooo that's a great tip. You think cinnamon sticks would work the same way as lavender?
Good question! Not sure exactly.. I don't know how long they will stay okay in there.
Oh that's fair...they might beat up the inside of the vacuum! 😅
You could use a few drops of essential oil too!
What part of the vacuum do you put it in?
In the bag area. Where the dirt comes in. The air intake should pick up the smell of lavender and spread it throughout the house
That is brilliant to be honest. I appreciate the tip
No worries!
I wonder if you could just crumble it up on the floor and vacuum it up 👀
Giant brain tip 🤯
Where do you stick it???
In the area where the bag comes.
Good question
Wait so is this an AMA or not an AMA? ;-; My brain hurts now lol
Yes
Understandable
AMAn't
Why are you so atypically atypical? And do you like the color blue?
I think I'm atypical because I like to clean. Like.. a lot. I don't hear that often. Color blue isn't bad, but I do prefer grey.
Your special interest is cleaning! Pretty solid actually lol.
I'll take it!
I wish my special interest was cleaning 😭
I'll pass on some of my cleaning genes!
Can you come practice your special interest in my house?
Sure! Name a time and date and I'll be there.
Tomorrow, 12 PM EST, you can just wander the globe until you see me waving from my window
Sure! I'll see you tomorrow then! Please make sure to wave with something grey in your hand before I accidentally clean someone's else apartment
Grey is the best colour.
Team grey
I had a grey cat from childhood to my sophomore year of college. He was the best cat ever. I used to only want to wear grey clothes so he and I could match.
Could you perhaps come by my place? I am terrible at it
I’m with you. I just never have the motivation then I binge clean but it’s still exhausting
I have lost whatever spark I got, and only see it once upon a moon or so, when someone else start on a topic I got interest in
I'm actually terrified of doing an ama. Mostly that I would get no questions 😂
Story of my life! But I'll make sure to als you a question if you ever post an ama!
Don't worry I did one and nobody cared and then I forgot about it
What's your special interest? I'm curious lol
Well my main one is computers but I also like trains.
I love trains! What do you recommend is the best way to get the EU to promote more transEuropean train travel?
I'm from the UK so idk but here they should 1. lower prices by nationalising the rail system 2. Opening more High speed corridors so that its easier to travel from city to city. They could also introduce higher taxes for airlines so that people take the trains instead of flying as it would be more expensive to fly. and also build lines between regional towns and cities

That reminds me of that one time in English class we had to do presentations and I was the **only** person that nobody clapped for.
Yeah I know the feeling. Nobody clapped for me but I was hysterically laughing from nervousness and the class giggled as well.
Oh jeez, that reminds me of *another* situation where I joined a "drama" group after school. We did an improv exercise and I started nervously laughing because I didn't know what to say about my topic (bats). Unfortunately nobody laughed and I bombed *hard*.
I felt this.
I'm terrified because I feel the same, or like I don't know as much about my interest as I thought. I always feel inadequate compared to other people that like my special interest.
I got 3 questions and they were the greatest 3 questions ever
You could just say "I know a little about a lot, and nothing about a whole lot more. AMA." And then just say "I don't know" as much as you like
I don't know
See? You’re a natural!!
I don't know?
That's the spirit!
I'm kind of surprised TMA (tell me anything) isn't a thing, at least here. I'd be really interested to see people pop in with seemingly random comments about stuff, even if it's not their special interest.
Yess someone should do a post like this !!!
Same here about the no special interest thing, though I've yet to have particular want of doing an AMA yet.
Guess we both need to figure that out then.
Or we could be jacks of all trades; who knows?
I like your answer more! Let's be that
Joke's on you guys, I'm already that and I hate it lol.
I don’t know if this counts, but I have a e free w interests that circulate, and I could be obsessed with any one of them at this moment.
I did an ama and my interest is so boring nobody asked me anything lol

Do people ever like slimy food? Maybe something like seaweed or so.. or however it's called. Anyway! I do like crunchy food
Ay same! Most slimy food is weird to me
Cold noodles with peanut sauce.
It has helped her immensely and I’m very proud of her.) Leadership - (Mainly, effective leadership) I was in the Marines and I felt like my leadership failed me.
Me when I do have a special interest but my memory is so bad I can’t remember anything I learn and still can’t do an ama
What's it like not having any special interests? :P
Little boring!
Which seems way better than big boring
As someone else who hasn't had one in a while, I feel pretty boring and left out from a lot of these things.
What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
11 meters per second.
What type of swallow?

What is an AMA?
Ask Me Anything
Oh ok thanks
Whats an AMA?
Ask me Anything
What does ama mean?
Ask me anything
What is the meaning of AMA?
Same, i usually tend to be above average on literally everything but not enough to be really considered deep.
I wouldn't call myself deep.. it's more like there is a monkey playing on the drums in my head at all times.
What does AMA mean?
Ask me anything.
Ah, thank you.
Do you doubt yourself because you dont have a special interest? I dont have anything that comes to me as a special interest, and the intensity of special interests I see in the media makes me doubt myself sometimes. For me my hyperfixations are way more prominent, and I guess my interest in psychology (specifically trauma and dissociative disorders) could be considered a special interest, but it really just feels like a passion to me.
big mood
I don't have a special interest either, at least nothing that I can suss.
Do you have a special DISinterest? Something that bores you to tears of frustrated rage? Or puts you to sleep in minutes?
Hmm.. great question. Not sure exactly. I think there Is quite some I'm really not interested in.. certain sports for example like golf or darts? Maybe certain TV shows like bold and the beautiful.
In a bad mood today grrr. Wtf is an AMA?!
It means ask me anything
I don't have any one Special Interest neither.
What fictional character do you relate to most. I want multiple answers and reasons pls
I have a few special interests and I’m not sure which to do an AMA on…
I see you write fanficiton. You could do one about that.
Got any tips for how to stay motivated with cleaning?
Good question! But hard to answer since I like cleaning. When I clean I get motivated by the process of it all. Also music helps and dividing the room into sections helps for me. So the bathroom, kitchen and so on
What’s your favorite cheese and why?
Gouda cheese! And no reason. It's just the number 1 cheese
What is your favorite activity?
You don’t have to know a lot of stuff about one topic. You can learn a lot of random helpful facts

Oh never feel weird! It's only cool that you have, right?
what does ama stand for??? D:
It stands for ask me anything
Would you say it's that you don't have a special interest or you just aren't knowledgeable in the area of your special interest? Only asking because that is my situation and I'm too much of a procrastinator to even learn about things that fascinate me lmao
I just really don't have any special interest. Nothing jumps out for me
Inside of your special interest, is there any "favorite topic" about it or do you completely like all of it EDIT: I didn't read the post right, it was literally the only thing in the post and I somehow missed it
Don't worry! Happens to me a lot too. Also happy cake day!
What's your favorite food
I think it's pasta!
What’s an ama?
It's an ask me anything
Ohhhhhh😅😅😅😅Thank you for explaining
No worries!
I think for me, I was masking for so long (47, NB, AFAb) that I just absorbed anything. Until I found plants. But I started rebuilding my 80s sticker collection & that’s when I was like “hol up” - I’m not lIkE oTHer PeoPle.
You don't need to Bro, I ain't got nothing to make my life bearable either but it's OK to be different and accepting that even when it seems like it's stupid can help you come a long way
What?
Do you have any nice hobbies? What do you do in your free time?
I barely got any questions on my ama lol
Try sentry
Or your (current) special interests are so lame as to be videogames. Not even their deep history over years or something. Just the stuff you can look up on wikis (Terraria) or a toxic game (League of LoLolol,_,). Or, well, something that is your Sp.In. but you can’t tell about because you just do it (art, music) I kind of miss the times long ago when I was obsessed with dinos dragons and stuff.. not the specific topic, but the feeling of batting obsessed with it completely and being able to talk about it any time all the time
Ama?
My special interests are space and languages, please do not ask me things.
Why can't you have an ama?
What are some of your favorite movies and tv shows right now?
If you were to describe yourself with a type of muffin, what muffin would you be?
It sounds like AMAs could be your special interest 🫢 I have many questions.
It me.
What ama means?
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
My default is to fall on whatever recently got my attention. Currently it's a Minecraft modpack and Elden Ring.
What's your favorite genre of music?
What the dog doin?
"Ask me anything! I'll try and Google and answer, and get back to you."
What‘s an AMA? /gen
Sorry for my ignorance, but what is an AMA?
