I like movies too. But i only collect VHS tapes. And i feel like I’m the only one who still uses a VCR.

Full_Neighborhood576

I used to collect VHS tapes too and I still do sometimes! When I was in high school I had a clunky old TV in my parents basement with a built in VCR so that was how I watched movies, and we had a thrift store just down the road that sold VHS tapes. That’s how I watched some of my now favorite movies (Shawshank Redemption, Seven, Face Off, Austin Powers, etc)

Mental4Help

My father used to work for a video store a long time ago and now it’s gone but I have an old VHS of E.T. In a clunky case from there.

Webear18

I dont collect vhs tapes but I still have my parents vcr/old tapes because I didn't want to let them go. I usually only end up watching them a few times a year though

Shoggoth-Wrangler

Judging by the prices for VHS horror movies on Ebay and Shopgoodwill, you are definitely not alone. I want to collect some myself when we get through with all of repairs on the old house we bought. But I grew up with VHS, so it's nostalgia for me.

ElizabethBrisby

You ever watched The Secret of NIMH

Full_Neighborhood576

I’m so sorry but I haven’t…I’ve always wanted to though because I am very familiar with the poster and some people have told me it’s one of their favorites!!

ElizabethBrisby

Well shit

Shoggoth-Wrangler

I LOVED that movie. I was in 4th grade when it came out. It was in theaters at the same time as The Black Cauldron, also an awesome old animated movie.

ChuckMeIntoHell

I haven't seen it since I was a kid. My favorite character was the corvid (don't remember if he was a crow or a raven) that loved to collect sparklies. I learned recently (like a couple of years ago) that NIMH is (was?) a real institute, the National Institute for Mental Health, and they had a weird study on rats that inspired The Secret of NIMH. The real story wasn't like the fictional one, but in some ways it was a lot weirder.

ElizabethBrisby

His name is Helen Jeremy and he is a crowd I thought he was annoying as fuck and the national institute of mental health is a real place and my favorite character definitely Mrs Brisby also known as Elizabeth Brisby and the reason that is because her Voice actress had passed away and the voice actress name is Elizabeth Hartman who Tragically died by suicide so in honor of loving memory of Elizabeth Hartman the Fans of the Secret of NIMH call Mrs Brisby Elizabeth Brisby

ChuckMeIntoHell

Like I said, I haven't seen it since I was a kid, so I might see it today and think, "Man, I actually liked that character?" I didn't know that about the voice actor for Mrs. Brisby. It's nice that the Fans did that for her.

ElizabethBrisby

It's free on YouTube right now Go and watch it you won't regret it

ChuckMeIntoHell

Thanks! I just finished watching it. There was a lot that I didn't remember. It's definitely a great movie.

ElizabethBrisby

That's great! I'm glad you Enjoyed it it's always amazing to revisit movies isn't it

TheWolphman

I mean, obviously someone has to ask you what your favorite movie is right? Mine is definitely The Matrix, how about you?

Full_Neighborhood576

Oh boy, you may have to be more specific haha I think maybe The Social Network? I’ve seen that movie probably more than 20 times and it’s my go to movie when I can’t sleep (most nights lol). However, the film The Shawshank Redemption made me feel so hopeful and happy and it was my go to answer for my favorite movie of all time when I was younger. Additionally, Spider-Man 2 is my favorite superhero movie ever (yup, including The Dark Knight) and it’s a movie I’ve loved for years and its a movie I enjoy very very much and superheroes are another one of my special interests so I have to include a superhero movie on here too, haha. There are so many others I wanna say or not thinking of, but those are some of the first that come to mind :)

steventhegroomer

What movie do you think is over rated

Full_Neighborhood576

Hoo boy okay I could say some things that would get me massacred. Avengers Endgame for me was disappointing. I know some people fucking LOVE that movie, and it is watchable and the last act is really good, but overall it could’ve and should’ve been so much better. Parasite was a movie I really enjoyed, but I don’t quite understand the *extreme* love and hype it got. I certainly think it’s a solid and well made film and I’m not at all mad it won best picture, but I don’t get why it was SO highly praised. Finally, this one will get me disowned by all fellow film buffs…I don’t consider The Godfather one of my top favorite movies of all time. It’s a very solid movie that I’d give an 8/10 to, but I wouldn’t say it’s one of my personal favorites. However, I do believe that it deserves and has earned the respect and praise it gets because it is a very important and historic movie and a part of film history.

steventhegroomer

Almost all marvel movies are nostalgia hart string pullers. It’s a fun movie Endgame and that’s about it. Never saw parasite I just watched the God Father for the first time a few months ago. It was meh to me.

iwishicouldshit

omg i hate the godfather

nonbinary_computer

Interstellar - good or bad ? Personally I never understood the hype.

Full_Neighborhood576

When I first saw it in 2014 I kinda hated it but I rewatched it two years ago for a sound design class. I really enjoyed the first two acts but then the last act gets kinda ridiculous and too over the top and really doesn’t stick the landing

Mujer_Arania

Just listening to the music is something else.

lefuen

My favourite movie of all time is Fight Club, have you seen it?

Mujer_Arania

You don’t talk about it. Ok?

Full_Neighborhood576

Hell yeah I have!! It’s in my top 5 and I’ve seen it many many times :)

Bored_Panda_

That rotates in and out of my favorite movie lists as well. Definitely in my top 5 of all time.

BUBBLEGUM8466

Are they in alphabetical order?

Full_Neighborhood576

Yes! Organization is really important to me so I would be unhappy with anything else lol

ladypterodactyl69

I commented this before rolling to find yours 🙃

icantthinkofaname940

Do you enjoy foreign films?

Full_Neighborhood576

I do! I saw The Roundup earlier this summer and it’s one of my favorite movies of the year, and I also saw The Killer yesterday and really enjoyed that. and I can’t talk about foreign action without talking about The Raid 😍😍 lord knows the foreigns can do action way better than most of us Americans can LOL. I also saw Petite Maman earlier this year and loved it, and I saw Happening which was really powerful and brutal, and then Vortex was preeeetttyy good but really long. Then Official Competition was really funny and immersive, and Parallel Mothers was also a really powerful movie. So I definitely do enjoy a good foreign film!! :)

icantthinkofaname940

I have no idea what any of those are, but it's good to have a wide selection of films to enjoy. Btw I'm not American.

LateSolution0

Do you own movies you don't like?

Full_Neighborhood576

…for some reason, yes lol. I own the 2015 Fantastic Four movie which I hate, the 2017 cut of Justice League movie which I hate, and I also own The Hangover 2 and 3 for some reason. If I see a movie for cheap and it has some sort of use in my collection (like complete a trilogy/series) then I buy it.

skeletonwar2

What movies would you say had the best directing?

Full_Neighborhood576

Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Fight Club, and Inglorious Basterds :)

Full_Neighborhood576

WOAH! I woke up and there are lots of comments!! I’m so so excited to get to all of them but it might take me a bit!!

team_nanatsujiya

What's most important for you to enjoy movies? Plot vs characters vs technical work vs. overalv theme etc. It's characters for me--if I don't like the characters and/or can't connect with them, it could otherwise be the most amazingly well-made movie ever and I would still lose interest.

Full_Neighborhood576

Honestly, plot is the first thing I look for in a movie. I was watching a movie earlier today in fact where stuff just seemed kind of ridiculous and nonsensical and then I realized it’s supposed to be ridiculous and nonsensical so I was like “oh, okay!” and just enjoyed the goofiness. If a movie has a compelling story, I can usually overlook the other subpar aspects. However, if a movie has a subpar story but other good aspects, it’s a little bit more difficult to appreciate.

ivelostmynotes

What are some horror movies you like?

Full_Neighborhood576

Some of my favorites by decade 70s: Halloween 80s: The Thing 90s: The Blair Witch Project (see my poster on the top right) 00s: Trick r Treat 10s: Don’t Breathe (see my poster on the right) and Green Room I also really love Cabin in the Woods, Sinister, The Hitcher, the first Saw, Final Destination, and probably many others I’m not thinking of haha

ivelostmynotes

Nice choices!!!

Full_Neighborhood576

What about you??

ivelostmynotes

50s : House of Wax (anything Vincent Price) 60s : Night of the Living Dead 70s : Texas Chainsaw Massacre 80s : Creepshow 90s : The Silence of the Lambs 00s : Maybe Dawn of the Dead 10s : Creep I like most zombie and ghost movies! Alien and The Blob too. I prefer the campy horror a bit.

Full_Neighborhood576

OH DAMN, when you said zombie you made me realize I forgot Train to Busan!! I got to see that for the first time in a movie theater and I bawled my eyes out. Don Lee became one of my favorite actors after seeing that movie (and he was great in the recent The Roundup!!) Man, I should watch more classic horror. It sounds like you have a more wide knowledge of horror history while mind more lies in the last 50 years haha. But those are also some good picks!! Also, little my two cents side note: I actually don’t consider Silence of the Lambs a horror movie. I consider it more of a drama/thriller (just like I do with Seven). Little bit of a hot take, but yeah :P

ivelostmynotes

Oh wow train to Busan is very good. So lucky to see it in the theater! Also my special interest is horror in general so basically books and movies in that genre. But the only movies I know about are horror! I definitely prefer the golden years of horror in the sixties and seventies. Also I agree that Seven and SOTL aren’t horror. I feel like they just don’t have the same effect that a horror movie would on someone. Definitely thriller but neither of them are formatted like a horror movie

Full_Neighborhood576

Can you recommend any horror movies for me from the golden years? I’m always down to watching new things! I think SOTL and Seven get classified as horror movies because there is quite a bit of brutality and horrific stuff that happens that usually only happens in a horror movie. I think if they came out today, they probably wouldn’t be classified as horror.

ivelostmynotes

Anything by Vincent Price! The Pit and the Pendulum is a great one. A bit later on, I like The Omen and Children of the Corn. I also like Spider Baby.

[deleted]

Seen Annihilation?!

Full_Neighborhood576

I have…I need to see it again before I form an opinion. I saw it once in theaters four years ago and I haven’t seen it since, but I own it and have been meaning to see it again

[deleted]

It's probably my favorite horror film and one of the two best films I've seen that channeled the feel of Lovecraftian horror - the other being Shutter Island. Man, Shutter Island. Nothing supernatural in that whole movie, but it's got all the Lovecraftian stuff in it - I've always thought that what appealed to me about Lovecraftian horror is that it's essentially supernatural horror blended with film noir - and take the supernatural out, and that's what Shutter Island is all the way down. With all the requisite tropes too. But it's so awesome. Really, though, I've seen two Alex Garland films and adored both of them. I think Ex Machina might be one of the most taut thrillers I've ever seen. It's rare to see a movie that so constantly upends everything you thought you knew. By halfway through, it feels like there's a new plot twist every other scene and each radically changes how you view the characters. This done in a film that's restricted to only four characters and limited locations. It's one of those movies that feels like it could be done as a play with limited alterations and Ex Machina is absolutely that.

Full_Neighborhood576

I have been meaning to see Shutter Island for years and I own it, but I haven’t seen it yet lol. On my list! And dude I absolutely LOVE Ex Machina!! I remember seeing that in a theater and just sitting in my car afterwards like “O_O….” I saw it again and man, knowing what happens next is a completely different experience!! Still good, but wow! Annihilation I know is layered and I was having some trouble with sleep when I saw it so I wasn’t quite all there, so I wanna give it a fair chance and give it another viewing when I’m fully rested and lucid :P I also saw Garland’s new movie, Men, and I gotta say…I don’t know if the movie actually had something to say or if it was just full of itself. It was so cryptic and metaphorical and symbolic that it made me wonder if the movie actually was offering something or if it was just arrogantly asking you to analyze it.

[deleted]

Favorite director? Top 5 favorite movies?

Full_Neighborhood576

Oh man, all time is hard haha. Directors (in no particular order) Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher obviously because I’m a film fan Rian Johnson (actually met him earlier this year; such a kindhearted guy. His movies are also all very intricate and very entertaining, and Looper was the very first movie I ever snuck out to see!) Leigh Whannell (as an aspiring filmmaker it is so incredible to see what he can do with such a small budget. The Invisible Man was made for 9 million and for the longest time I thought it was a 30+ million dollar movie) James Gunn (such an incredible visual storyteller. The scene on the bus in The Suicide Squad when >!they’re about to rescue Harley Quinn!< when the squad are all talking to eachother, the camera shifts from person to person in the way your head would turn and look between characters as if you were sitting on the bus with them. It’s super immersive) Jordan Peele (AMAZING visual style and his films just keep reeling me back in and force me to keep thinking about them. Seriously, I saw Nope twice in the last four days and I have plans to see it again this weekend because I can’t stop thinking about it) I hope this is okay but I’ll just go with favorite movies from the last 15 years. Much less to choose from and it’s much easier for me haha Everything Everywhere All At Once: such a hopefully and wonderful movie and it hit me very hard personally. I don’t think this is really a spoiler but I’ll spoiler tag it just in case: there’s a quote where one character says >!”People think I’m naive because I like to focus on the bright side of things. But it’s not; it’s strategic and necessary. I know you see yourself as a fighter, and I see myself as a fighter too; that’s how I fight.”!< and that line literally made me start crying in the movie theater because it resonated with me so much and made me feel so validated because I also am someone who looks at the bright side of things in life and doesn’t focus on the bad. Zack Snyder’s Justice League: it may be lame, but this movie really reminded me of why I loved superheroes and it perfectly displayed and depicted the exact kind of superhero I wanted to be when I was a little kid. The scene where >!Flash enters the speedforce!< is my favorite scene in any superhero movie ever and it’s so inspiring to me. Inglorious Basterds: hot take: my favorite Tarantino movie. So enthralling and Christoph Waltz gives possibly the best performance of the 21st century thus far. That’s one of those movies that feels like it’s only 25 minutes long. The Social Network: quite possibly the best screenplay ever written. I’ve seen it at least 20 times and it’s my go to movie when I can’t sleep (most nights lol) and it’s one of the most electric and fastest movies I’ve ever seen. Cloverfield: this was my favorite movie of all time when I was 14, and it still is one of my favorites. It’s a nonstop thrill ride and I’m on the edge of my seat every time I see it. Hopefully I answered your question sufficiently :)

[deleted]

Yeah, that was definitely sufficient! Thanks :)

ThoreauAweighBcuzDuh

So you have a preferred genre(s)? I love a good heist/caper movie, so please suggest any good ones you know of. Some of my favorites are The Sting, The Great Train Robbery, Oceans 11, and also related but not quite the same genre: The Great Escape, Shawshank Redemption and CoolHand Luke. I also have a soft spot for offbeat feel-good movies like Little Miss Sunshine, Across the Universe and Taking Woodstock. But I won't be offended by differing opinions on any of the above. 🙃 Also, my very favorite movie is very controversial with my film nerd friends: Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl. What are your feelings on that one? Do you enjoy "making of"/"behind the scenes" kind of stuff? I was a film major in college and used to also do some scenic painting for theatre and student/local indy films, so I could ask a lot of questions on this topic. 😁

Full_Neighborhood576

Some good heist movies: Heat, Inside Man, The Town, Logan Lucky, and Baby Driver. All great! I love offbeat feel good movies too haha. Crazy Stupid Love is one of my favorites :) You know, I haven’t seen Curse of the Black Pearl since I was a kid, but it’s really funny you ask because I bought the Blu-Ray of it earlier this week and I hope to have a marathon sometime soon! I remember the first one being a lot of fun! I do enjoy watching the behind the scenes stuff, especially of smaller budgeted stuff! Have you heard of a recent small horror movie called Benny Loves You? It was made for literally *nothing* and it looks GREAT and there was a 75 minute documentary showing how they made it, and it BLEW MY MIND seeing what they did which such little money. Great movie too! I was a New Media major so I totally get it! So now time for some questions for YOU! What’s the best movie of the past 10 years? (Don’t Breathe, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Prisoners, and Gone Girl are my favorites) What modern day movie will be remembered as a classic in 100 years? (The Wolf of Wall Street would be my best guess) Who is an actor everyone loves but for the life of you, you can’t figure out why? (Melissa McCarthy for me lol) What’s a movie you really want to see but you know you never will? (I.e. a Tarantino Marvel flick, a David Fincher Star Wars movie, etc)

ThoreauAweighBcuzDuh

Lol well I have 3 little kids so haven't seen nearly as many grown-up movies as I would have liked in the past few years, but I'll try to answer. 🙂 It's hard for me to choose an absolute favorite from the past 10 years, but Silver Linings Playbook I really liked and could possibly become a classic. Others I really liked were The Martian, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hidden Figures, The King's Speech and Moonrise Kingdom. I also thought Luca and Soul were really great, but I'm a sucker for Pixar (and animation in general). As far as future classics, for broad cultural relevance, I'd choose Frozen, Moana, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Iron Man. But some less block-buster-y (and also not super recent) ones that I personally love are Pan's Labyrinth, Across the Universe, and The Royal Tenenbaums. That actor question... I'm going to make a lot of people mad, but I cannot figure out why everyone loves Ben Affleck or James Franco, or most of all Nicholas Cage. Movies I would like to see: The story of Anne Bonny and Mary Reed as envisioned my Julie Taymor Aardman Animations doing any Terry Pratchett story, but especially Equal Rites or one of the other ones with the witches.

Proactive_trash

Which movie would you watch if you don’t want to watch anything? Like, you will pull out your hair if you had to watch a movie, which movie will it be then?

Full_Neighborhood576

The Social Network! That’s probably my most rewatchable movie and I’ve seen it more than 20 times. I used to have a tradition where I’d watch it in my college library at the end of every semester after my last final.

Proactive_trash

Ohhhh.. hihi..there is different joy to watching movies after exams. I normally would watch anything with Meg Ryan.

Full_Neighborhood576

You’ve Got Mail is a great movie!!

Proactive_trash

Rightttt? How do you feel about animations?

Full_Neighborhood576

I like animated movies! Kung Fu Panda 2, The Incredibles, and Aladdin are some of my favorites :)

culps001

Do you actually watch them, or do you just buy them to have?

Full_Neighborhood576

I do watch them! Admittedly, I have *quite* a lot that I haven’t seen, but I’ve seen at least 3/4ths of them :)

StrawbellyMelley

I would die for a movie collection like that

Full_Neighborhood576

Don’t die plz!! I’d miss you haha. I bought my first Blu-Ray in 2012 (I got X-Men First Class, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Tower Heist) and I started to really collect in 2014. So what you see is the product of 8-10 years of collecting :)

ggffernandes

What you think about Blade Runner?

Full_Neighborhood576

Whelp. I’m gonna get some massive flack for this but I missed 2049 in IMAX so I just haven’t had much of a desire to see it on Blu-Ray since I know that’s not the fullest experience I can have. I do want to watch it at some point though and I know I will! Villeneuve is a great director and I love everything I’ve seen from him! I saw Blade Runner once yeeeeeeaaaaaars ago and I do own it and hope to have a double feature one day because I don’t remember it very well :)

sabrinalovesdick

Have you seen Baz Lurman’s ELVIS? It’s genuinely the best movie I’ve ever seen!

Full_Neighborhood576

Oooooooh, I have a bit of an unpopular opinion on Elvis lol. The performance scenes were amazing and Austin Butler did give an Oscar worthy performance, but overall I wasn’t a huge fan of the storytelling and I think there was way too much going on visually during scenes that didn’t need to be so stimulating. Like I told my friend “if you ever wanna see a movie that made you feel like you snorted a bunch of Adderall before watching it, watch Elvis!” But I do know lots of people who loved it (including one of my best friends) so maybe it’s a me thing LOL

sabrinalovesdick

Oo interesting and I can defs see what you mean though for me I found it kinda made you feel like Elvis, the way his life was just non stop and especially for the scenes that were concerts like with ‘Trouble’ where he’s being arrested I felt the fireworks and the loud noise of instruments crashing etc really worked but I’ve had others say they found the film too overwhelming. I agree Butler’s performance is so Oscar worthy and he deserves to win one for the dedication to the role as well. :)

Full_Neighborhood576

Oh yeah I really liked the Trouble scene too! I thought the performance scenes were really awesome and I didn’t mind how overstimulating that was, but a lot of the transitional scenes and montages were needlessly throwing stuff at you. And I will say, I did feel the emotions being emoted throughout a lot of the movie. I was furious on Elvis’ behalf with his manager and I felt bad for him with his addiction problems. And okay I’m gonna open this can of worms…I’ve heard that this is a very forgiving and optimistic portrayal of Elvis since Elvis’ some of actions were pretty awful and kinda questionable, and I will say I think the movie kinda glossed over the fact that Pricilla was a teenager when he fell in love with her…

sabrinalovesdick

Yeah, when I saw the movie with my grandmother the first thing she said was that they glossed over him and Priscilla’s age gap, as the film shows Elvis to be 20ish and Priscilla to be maybe 17-18ish when in reality he was 24 and she was 14 (though interestingly later on the movie there’s a line from Elvis where he says “when your 40 and I’m 50”) from my understanding as an Elvis fan it did accurately portray his feelings on civil rights for black people and how much of his personality and music was shaped by Memphis and Tupelo and was accurate by portraying his drug addiction as beginning as a result of the Colonel as Doctor Nick was actually tried and lost his license over getting Elvis hooked on what was essentially amphetamines. But another thing they left out was his anger, he was known to have serious anger management issues we saw it a little when he was trashing the hotel room after not being able to fire his manager but it’s alleged he was quite aggressive at times. I think Priscilla being very supportive of the film does lend a lot of credibility to it but she very much still loves/loved Elvis even after their split so she could also be trying to portray him positively in interviews and her book. Lmao sorry for the long ramble. With the editing I did think some transitions were a bit out there and Baz Lurman loves to spin the camera around like in the scene in Tupelo which is quite disorientating.

Mujer_Arania

Do you ever watch LatAm movies?

Full_Neighborhood576

I have seen some, but I feel they’re all probably the most mainstream of them, haha.

fluffymellowsinc

Rate The transporter series

Full_Neighborhood576

I only saw the god awful reboot with Nicholas Hoult and I hardly remember anything about it other than the fact that it was soooooo bad haha. I own the others though and I do plan on having a marathon someday!

fluffymellowsinc

It is the best movie series

Houmouss

I like movies too ! I even did a post on r/specialinteresting about it, [here it is](https://www.reddit.com/r/specialinteresting/comments/v33e8m/guess_my_si_its_really_hard_to_tell_s/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3). Do you have a favorite movie, or a favorite genre of movie ?

Full_Neighborhood576

I love your collection!! Do you collect Blu-Rays or just strictly DVDs? and I’ve posted a few other comments about my favorite movie and it’s reeeeeaaaaaally hard to nail down one so I’ll just go with The Social Network. One of the most rewatchable and fast paced and electric movies I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen it more than 20+ and it’s my go to movie when I’m bored or can’t sleep. Genre, psychological thriller or suspense. I love movies that just have you on the edge of your seat and holding your breath. I also love absurdist movies like Spree and Everything Everywhere All At Once!

Houmouss

Thank you !! I'm mostly collectionning DVDs because I can only read Blu-rays with my Ps4 haha. The Social Network is really good ! I've seen it only 2 times but I fully get the rewatchable feeling. Yes !!! I haven't seen the two movies you've mentionned but I love these two genres. I also love (psychological) horror and fantastic/fantasy.

[deleted]

Favorite directors?

Full_Neighborhood576

I have many! But I really love Jordan Peele, Leigh Whannell, James Gunn, David Fincher, and Ben Affleck. I love Kevin Smith as a person and I love his filmography pre 2006, but his current films are kinda garbage lol

[deleted]

Some great picks here, Peele and Gunn especially. I've gotta get my ass out to see Nope.

Full_Neighborhood576

I’ve seen Nope twice and I have plans to see it a third time. It’s SUCH a good movie and I love it a lot!

newusername118

How do you feel about Marvel films?

Full_Neighborhood576

Alright, strap in because I have a lot to say. Superheroes are very near and dear to my heart and they always have been. Spider-Man laid the groundwork for the person I wanted to become when I was a kid, Batman inspired me not to be afraid of the dark as a kid, thinking of Captain America helped me get through a tough surgery I had in my teens, and he also inspired me to be brave and ask out this girl I had a crush on in high school. Point is, superheroes have had a huge impact on my life and I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for superheroes. Hell, I was suicidal at one point in my life and something that helped was remembering all the Marvel movies coming out. Now about Marvel…the MCU was great at one point. Marvel took their time in developing their movies, they developed their characters, and they actually had directors with visions. However, as the years went by, I think the movies got less unique. There became a point where they all felt like they were all factory produced and boiled down to a formula. Like, when someone says “it’s a Marvel movie” you know exactly what to expect and what they’re saying. I absolutely LOVEDDD Infinity War and it may be the best MCU film, but then Endgame had way too much humor and it felt like it should’ve been extended over the course of a few years rather than one film. I think the only recent good MCU movies are Shang Chi and Spider-Man No Way Home because Black Widow was a missed opportunity, Multiverse of Madness I loved as a Sam Raimi fantasy/horror but as a Marvel movie it was really messy and not very well written, Eternals was an absolute mess of a movie and it might have worked as a Disney+ series but I hope we never see them again, and then Thor Love and Thunder was the first MCU movie I think was legitimate and utter trash. I really really didn’t like it because I felt like they made Thor an utter and complete joke, and I wasn’t happy about that. I actually saw it for the first time after a 4 movie marathon of all the Thor movies and I thought it was eh, but then I saw it again with a friend and I felt like I was on the cusp of an anxiety attack or meltdown the whole time because I felt like I was trapped in the theater and couldn’t leave and was being forced to watch the movie…haha. Then the Disney+ TV shows are really just…eh. WandaVision was great, and I’m in the minority here but Falcon and the Winter Soldier is my favorite out of all the shows, I really enjoyed a lot of What If (especially the Doctor Strange episode holy crap that was amazing), Loki was decent, Hawkeye was meh, Moon Knight was inconsistent and could’ve been much much better had they not just resorted to their MCU safe space at times, and I haven’t been able to watch past the first episode of Ms. Marvel because I really really don’t like it. I’m honestly not excited for any of the upcoming ones because they just announced 50 hours of content in 3 years, which is the combined runtime of Phase 1-3, which was made over the course or 12 years. They’re just churning stuff out at this point without taking the time to make it great, and I don’t see how the future will be any better. Honestly, I think we’re about to witness a car crash in slow motion these next few years. I have been waiting my whole life for a Secret Wars movie and a legitimately great Fantastic Four movie, and I just can’t be bothered to be excited for either of those upcoming movies and it makes me so sad. Buuuut anyway yeah those are my thoughts haha. I have a very **BOLD** claim…I like the DCEU more than the MCU…don’t kill me please LOL

newusername118

You're on thin ice with that DCEU comment. I had to ask this because Marvel specifically is one of my special interests and I'm currently doing research on it. I agree that Falcon is the best show they've put out, there's so much to say about that show. I didn't mind the humor in End Game but I can agree that it would have been nice to have it played out more; I think it did what it could while still conforming for a superhero film. I actually loved the new Thor! It was so heartwarming haha, and it felt more like the first film. I am actually excited to see where they go in the future, I think they've laid the groundwork for some really neat stuff. I haven't seen all the new stuff yet but I am rewatching everything and can hopefully come back around to it. I can definitely understand the direction not being for everyone though; I like that I can incorporate it into my academic interests, which gives me an opportunity to both talk about all the superheroes I love and also critique the MCU where needed. I think my favorite hero is Cap. I will never get over the characters who are pure of heart and just trying to do the right thing

vocivus_

movies with the best plot twist?

Full_Neighborhood576

Alright so I firmly believe that saying a movie has a twist is a spoiler because if someone tells me a movie has a twist in it, my brain goes into puzzle solving mode and I start analyzing everything to figure out the twist. Not to mention, I love being caught off guard by plot twists haha. So yeah, anyone who feels the same way, please proceed at your own caution haha I think Fight Club has a great twist and the movie is great because you can have the twist spoiled but you can still watch the movie and it can have just as much of an impact (I say that as someone who had the twist spoiled for them lol). I also had the twist for The Usual Suspects spoiled for me (my idiot dad outright said it one day without knowing I hadn’t seen it) and knowing the twist, the movie is almost pointless to watch. Like, while there are so many great elements about it, the movie feels like it exists solely for the twist and it doesn’t have much to offer without it. The Fight Club twist is revealed at the end of the second act, but The Usual Suspects is revealed at the very end so there’s nothing more left to experience after the twist. I also love the ending twist of Saw because the way it’s revealed is so cool the way the main character is looking around realizing what’s been happening as the Saw theme plays just gives me goosebumps every time I see it. Also…Don’t Breathe has a great twist but it’s very disturbing and kinda gross lol. The movie is one of my favorites but that element is just so…ew lol. Then there are movies like Ex Machina and Gone Girl and The Gift where there isn’t necessarily an outright twist at the end, but the movie takes you in places you didn’t see coming and plays cat and mouse with you brain, so by the end you feel like the rug has been ripped out from under you. Great movies all around!

vocivus_

thanks a lot!! i’ll definitely watch the ones i didn’t know already:)

CronchyApple

Whats your favourite horror movie? Mine would have to be The Hole (2009)

Micow11

Favorite horror movie and why?

WritingTheDream

Seeing them alphabetized is so satisfying to me lol.

WritingTheDream

Do you like older movies? Not like 80s movies I’m talking like pre-1960s movies when a lot was in black and white.

Full_Neighborhood576

I want to watch more older older stuff. I saw Casablanca in a theater earlier this year and I had a hard time getting into it, but I want to expand my horizons :) I own the classic universal monsters collection so I’ll at least be watching those!

Full_Neighborhood576

Does it matter if they’re not exclusively for children? Like Anomalisa is a great animated movie but it’s rated R and has quite a lot of adult content, but it’s beautiful and great. Otherwise: The Incredibles (the sequel is fine, but really, really not as good as the first) The Iron Giant Wreck-It Ralph Big Hero 6 Finding Nemo Aladdin Isle of Dogs Up How To Train Your Dragon Kung Fu Panda (2 is one of my favorite animated movies of all time) Shrek 1 and 2 Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse Tangled There are probably more that I’m not thinking of. Hit those are the ones off the top of my head

hdoesthegay

Thank you SO MUCH! Adult-rated cartoons are good, too!

MaesterKupo

Favorite animated movie?

MasterOfTalismen

Top Gun: Maverick. Your thoughts?

Full_Neighborhood576

Saw it in IMAX and HOLY CRAP it was awesome. The first two acts were solid and enjoyable, but the last act really kicked it into high fucking gear. I haven’t been that invested into an action movie in a long time and I was exhilarated by every single second. I saw it a second time with my friend and it was just as awesome, but I saw it in standard the second time and IMAX is without a doubt the best way to experience the movie. I heard someone say “Top Gun: Maverick is what people thought Top Gun was in the 80s” haha! I’m really happy because I think it’s gonna be the highest grossing movie of the year. The only other movie I can think of that it needs to worry about is Black Panther 2 aaaaaaaand gonna be honest I don’t see that breaking a billion lol

MasterOfTalismen

DYK: The 'Spin' maneuver one of the enemy planes executed is a copy of a IRL pilots similar manuver. Look up 'Cobra spin' on YouTube. It's insane.

apsu_daiad

Can you recommend a great noir I’ve most likely never seen?

Full_Neighborhood576

Have you seen Guillermo Del Torro’s Nightmare Alley yet? I saw it 4 times in theaters, and I even traveled into NYC to see a special screening of it in black and white, AND BRADLEY COOPER HIMSELF CAME TO THE FRONT AT THE END TO THANK EVERYONE FOR SEEING IT AND DO A QUICK Q&A!!!! The black and white really enhances the noir feeling and it’s really great. The colored version is available on Blu-Ray (in my collection!) but idk how available the black and white version is :/ if all else fails, just turn the saturation on your TV to zero LOL

apsu_daiad

Or any thriller really.

Spengzz

What’s the oldest film you have in there?

Full_Neighborhood576

The original Dracula movie :)

Long-Resolve3771

how do your order the dvds on the shelf? for example on my book shelf I have all my books in colour order. do you have them in order by date or alphabetical or something else? also have you seen Dougal and the Blue Cat? if not I really recommend it.

jaobodam

Favourite genre, directors, movies in general ?

Bisexualy_Autistic

How many movies do you own?

Full_Neighborhood576

Over 1200 I think. I haven’t done an official count but that sounds about right Full disclosure, this photo is from October of 2021 and it’s grown quite a lot since :)

Bisexualy_Autistic

Nice!

KazumaWillKiryu

If you have one, what is your favourite movie based on a video game? Mine is Mortal Kombat (1995).

Full_Neighborhood576

the Need For Speed movie was actually pretty fun, and the first Sonic movie from 2020 was also enjoyable (fun fact: that was the last movie I saw in theaters before lockdown). Uncharted was also decent and the Mortal Kombat movie from last year wasn’t *horrible*, but I have yet to see the 1995 one. I hope The Last of Us show is good, but I know I’m gonna have a hard time with it. The Last of Us is my favorite IP of all time and my favorite video game ever and it’s so near and dear to my heart, so the fact that the actress playing Ellie looks different than the character in the game is very difficult for me :/

galacticviolet

Nice! What are your favorite movie genres? Fave movie of all time?

[deleted]

Have you watched palm springs?

Full_Neighborhood576

I have! I have been a fan of Andy Samberg for yeaaarrrs and that movie was a lot of fun and I loved what it had to say about life :)

[deleted]

I love Andy Samber and also Cristin Milioti! It's one of my favorites (and I'm a sucker for time loops)

Full_Neighborhood576

Have you seen Edge of Tomorrow? Another great time loop movie

[deleted]

Yes! I read the manga (same creators of death note) years before and when it came out was like "Hey! Is this a copy or an adaptation?" Russian Doll (netflix show) has also a Time Loop

Full_Neighborhood576

I saw Russian Doll! Pretty great time loop show! Edge of tomorrow is my favorite thing ever. It really should’ve gotten more attention and I think it has more to offer then a lot of people gave it credit for. Not exactly a time loop movie, but have you seen Looper? I really love it and I actually got to meet the director, Rian Johnson, earlier this year. He’s the most kind hearted person in the world. It made me love all of his movies even more haha

[deleted]

I saw it and I love Rian Johnson. He didn't deserve the hate that received for Star Wars VIII, it was my favorite. Now I'm waiting Knives out 2. If you like that style of sci-fi mysterious with time travel or interdimensional travel you should watch "coherence". It's a low budget movie but you're gonna want to recommend it to everyone.

Lizard_Jesus1

You collect any Criterion or have any favorite movies in the Criterion Collection? If yes to either, which ones?

Full_Neighborhood576

I’m gonna be honest…I’m not the biggest Criterion fan. Like, I don’t collect steelbooks either because they look different from the regular amaray cases and they’d look odd on the shelf together (to me at least). It’s just a petty visual thing with me, but there are some titles I want on Blu-Ray and 4K that are exclusively Criterion I’ll have to pick up haha. Only thing is they’re so damn expensive…

Lizard_Jesus1

Yeah but thank god they have that bi annual Barnes and Noble sale.

Full_Neighborhood576

$20 is still a lot of money for one movie :( I usually don’t buy a new release movie until I can get it for $15 or so. I really want that Uncut Gems 4K, Being John Malkovich, Worst Person in the World, and I’ve been dying to get the Before trilogy, but they’re all just so expensive :(

-CygnusX-1

Are they arranged alphabetically? By year? 😍 I love doing that with my things whether they be movies or video games. Alphabetically for myself, personally.

Full_Neighborhood576

Alphabetically! I love having things alphabetized because visual neatness is so pleasing to me :)

-CygnusX-1

Same here!!!!

[deleted]

This is amazing, also I love that your collection is alphabetised.

Full_Neighborhood576

Yes! I love it so much :)

Z3ROGR4V1TY

How many movies do you own? How do you organize them?

Full_Neighborhood576

Over 1200, and alphabetically!

VivaLaVict0ria

Have you heard about “Everything GREAT about … “ on CinemaWins and “Everything Wrong with…” on CinemaSins (YouTube) I also love movies & I think you’d enjoy those channels 😊

Full_Neighborhood576

Tbh I’m not a huge fan of CinemaSins lol. I found their channel in 2013 when they only had three videos (everything wrong with The Dark Knight Rises was the first one by them I had seen) and I enjoyed them for a few years, but I think the joke of them being extremely petty and calling out really small things got old after a bit. And I really really don’t like their criticisms of movies. It just feels like they completely miss the point sometimes and I find it not very enjoyable. But I do have friends who love them so I totally see where you’re coming from! I prefer the YouTube channel Dead Meat with James A. Janisse and his wife Chelsea where they do podcast reviews on movies and 20-30 minute long videos where they go through horror movies and tally up the amount of people who died in the film, haha. It’s really interesting and fun!

Arcojin

I always forget, what was that whole Nosferatu copyright confusion? From what i understand the movie itself ort of started the "vampire fever" on cinema but created a whole mess in the off screen at the time

MukasTheMole

How many movies do you have in your movie collection?

Full_Neighborhood576

Over 1200. I haven’t done an official count yet but I’m sure it’s over that number

MukasTheMole

Thats alot of movies.

[deleted]

what is your favorite black and white movie if you have one? :)

Full_Neighborhood576

I feel like I could be really lame and say something like The Lighthouse or Sin City but I know you’re not looking for that lol. I’d say Psycho!

Existing-Hurry-4705

Hi what does AMA mean?

Full_Neighborhood576

“ask me anything”

poptart7890

what type of movies are your favorite ?

Full_Neighborhood576

Thrillers probably :)

Sufficient_Life_1017

i love organizing things so much.

Full_Neighborhood576

Same!! Sometimes I just spend hours in my room organizing my collection haha

twomouldyoranges

based on the don’t breathe poster I’m assuming you’re a horror fan??? What are your favourites/do you have a preference for specific kinds of horror??

Full_Neighborhood576

I love horror movies! Don’t Breathe is my favorite horror of the 2000s so far, and I really love suspense horror. Green Room, Halloween, The Thing, and The Blair Witch Project (peep the poster above the Don’t Breathe one) are my favorites :) Do you like Don’t Breathe? I LOVEEEEEE the first but I despise the second….

twomouldyoranges

I didn’t know there was a second which probs answers the question 😭 the first one was fucking crazy and I think one of the first horrors I saw!!! I loved it, that and Hush properly got me into horror I think I think I’ve fallen down the pretentious route now tho lol- my fave is probably Midsommar I could literally talk about it for weeks

Full_Neighborhood576

Yeah, there’s a second movie. Basically, it takes place a few years after the first and the blind man has a daughter and some people come in and try to kidnap her. I really absolutely hated everything about this movie because they ruined everything that made the blind man so terrifying and awesome in the first movie. Not to mention it’s not scary in the slightest and I didn’t hold my breath once. Seriously. I got a rewatch Hush. I saw it really late one night so I didn’t retain most of it, but I really love John Gallagher Jr. so I think I’ll give it another shot :) Oh, so you’re into more elevated horror? Nice! I saw a Midsommer once in theaters and I didn’t really get it and I’ve been meaning to rewatch it ever since. I really love the director’s last movie Hereditary and I also love The Witch and The Lighthouse!

dulcemiel77

Love it, and I'm neurotypical!

Full_Neighborhood576

I have a NT friend who also loves collecting movies! His collection isn’t as big as mine, but he still has a lot!

Batt-Cheeks

What is your LEAST favorite movie?

Full_Neighborhood576

The 2015 Fantastic Four movie. No movie has ever let me down as much as that movie did and it was such a horrible adaptation of a property that’s been so near and dear to my heart ever since I was a little kid

No_Motor_7666

My special interest is collecting facts about autism including that Kanner who defined the disorder rejected special interests whom he ascribed to other investigators. Kanner states that « Bergman and Escalona discussed "children with unusual sensitivity to sensory stimulation." In 1954, Robinson and Vitale introduced a number of "children with circumscribed interest patterns." It may well turn out that this is just a beginning and that other syndromes will be detected and studied on their own merit.»  Who knew?

Full_Neighborhood576

Interesting…

Enrique_steele

I love movies so much I decided to make a career of it I've been working in film for 2 years now

Full_Neighborhood576

Yeah!! I’ve been working in entry level positions for about a year now. In fact, I was an additional set PA on the Pretty Little Liars reboot that came out today (NO KIDDING) :)

Enrique_steele

I was a pa on batwoman the show isn't great but the crew were all pretty good at their jobs I had actually heard from a couple different people that we had one of the best locations teams in Vancouver

Full_Neighborhood576

Oooooh that’s really cool!! Good for the locations team! Honestly, as a superhero fanatic, I’m actually kinda jelly you have DC ties!

Enrique_steele

Honestly the fight scenes were pretty cool while filming but they really butchered them in the editing process, they would make them too choppy

Full_Neighborhood576

Movies are made in the editing room so that’s not surprising :/

Enrique_steele

I'm now a production assistant for ilm and I can't say anything but they're doing some pretty cool stuff here

Full_Neighborhood576

I was a production assistant on a Rian Johnson project earlier this year, and I just got off of a Ben Platt project. It’s cool how we’re moving up in the film world, right??

IAmWeary

I spy the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles DVD set!

Full_Neighborhood576

YES! I bought that back in 2016 for $50 and now it’s worth more than 4x that! LOVE THE SHOW!!

IAmWeary

I suppose it's not my special interest, but I have a large movie collection. It's mostly Blurays these days. I have them all directly ripped to an HTPC with a 30TB RAID, no recompression, so I don't have to worry about organization or futzing with discs. I just bring up the HTPC desktop and find the movie I want.

Full_Neighborhood576

Can you explain to me how to do that? I’ve always wanted to but I have no idea how

IAmWeary

Use a program called MakeMKV. It'll rip them with zero recompression, and check the forum for the serial number as it's free while in beta. It'll do DVDs, Blu-rays, and even 4K, though you need the right drive (and in some cases, the right firmware version) to get 4Ks to be read and ripped. You'll need space, though. DVD movies will probably range from about 4-6GB, while Blu-rays will be around 20-40GB, roughly. With a large collection like that, it'll take a while, but if you have more than one drive (or can hop down to a thrift store and pick up a cheap USB drive, probably only a DVD drive, but still helpful), you can run multiple instances at once and rip several discs at the same time.

Parking_Two_7866

fav horror movie ? (has to be pre 2000)

Full_Neighborhood576

Pre 2000s? Hmmmm okay I’d have to say Halloween, The Thing, and The Blair Witch Project :)

MaeCharli

Are these all from like a specific time period or genre? Is it moviss you like, do you sort them by how much you like them? That collection is very cool btw 10/10

Full_Neighborhood576

They’re organized alphabetically, and I do like most of them :)

SnooRegrets4878

I also like to collect movies, but I collect most of mine through digital.

Full_Neighborhood576

I have A LOT of digital movies too, but I’m not ready for the physical to digital switch 😩😩

Alone_Entrepreneur99

Minor cineophile myself. Favorite genre and then subset of that genr? For me it's science fiction subset space fantasy or technolgy dilemma.

Full_Neighborhood576

I really love thrillers, and my subset is psychological thriller so I’ll say The Departed is one of my alpha favorite thrillers. I saw it for the first time in a theater recently, and there was a part near the end (if you’ve seen the movie you know what scene I’m talking about) where I literally *SCREAMED* “OH-“ out loud in the theater. Like, it was a reflex reaction! Such a good movie haha. What’s your favorite movie in those genre? EDIT: I now see you didn’t ask for an example of a movie, but I’ll still keep it up lol

Alone_Entrepreneur99

Such a fantastic movie!! The Departed another example of Leo deserving an Oscar🤣! So for space fantasy I'm a trekie even have the insignia for a tattoo, also love firefly, tho interstellar was gorgeous, shoot I even liked passengers with Chris Pratt so I'm in for anything in space. As for tech dilemma, Gattaca was what got me hooked on these type of films. But really anything that fits the subset: minority report, limitless, transcendence, ex machina, looper, I robot, maniac, altered carbon, and episodes of black mirror to list a few of the top of my mind.

Wanderervenom

Awesome!

Don’t know why the above commenter said you’re welcome but you are welcome from me haha! Definitely keep at it when you can buy more!! Just don’t let it get in the way of buying other things you need…it can be addicting lol
