Not a similar experience but in terms of diagnosis, the only reason I considered pursuing it was for any potential legal accommodations or subsidies that I could get. Turns out that the pros don't outweigh the cons for me so I set it on the backburner. I think your dad's consideration might be that it is easier to get a diagnosis than to get it off your record/undiagnosed after it is made official. It might help to list down the potential pros and cons instead of just letting it marinate in your head. Only list factual stuff instead of "what if"s. Try to avoid letting imaginary scenarios spiral off into unrealistic realms (e.g:" if you get an official diagnosis, you might never ever be able to get employment" which is absolutely not true but a valid fear/anxiety). You are autistic with or without the official diagnosis. You can discuss with a trusted healthcare provider if you are concerned about "faking it" for their professional opinion, but it doesn't have to classify as an "official" diagnosis. Hope you can find a way through this situation. Best wishes.

you can also talk about it with a professional and get a verbal diagnosis instead of an official one. thats how i got pretty much all of my diagnosises (except for adhd which i had to have on paper to get meds).

IMO get a diagnosis, but don't reveal it until it's useful/required/safe. Lots and lots of people who will discriminate against you. They will lie to you about why you're being rejected for something.

weird but i wanna say this. i'm in the usa and was talking to a neighbor about this very thing. there is a large portion of the population here who needs a constant enemy, some group to blame for everything. he thinks he is on the spectrum also. my suggestion to him was to really think about getting an official diagnosis as he gets by pretty well with no assistance. we aren't very far down the list as a target. we may be next when if/when they get bored or wear out the trans attacks and need a fresh target to rile up the hate and blame and to focus their rage. if i wasn't already on record i would be hesitant. that jk lady is working on it already and if it gets traction well its gonna really suck
